Netflix Finally Reveals Full Trailer for Devil May Cry in Major Anime Update
Image
Things are about to get "crazy" on Netflix with the April release of Devil May Cry. The anime TV adaptation of the popular Capcom series released a brand-new trailer, revealing more of its story and celebrated voice cast.

In anticipation of its upcoming release, Netflix debuted a new full-length trailer for Devil May Cry on its official YouTube channel. The nearly two-minute trailer -- set to Papa Roach’s "Last Resort" -- showcased the over-the-top action sequences one would expect from Devil May Cry, alongside the introductions of fan-favorite characters. The White Rabbit is seemingly trying to usher in a new world order dominated by demons, unless the young devil hunter Dante meets with him first. Dante, of course, would never turn down an invitation to a party, especially one as exciting as this.

Universal Will Own Top Three Spots At July 4th Box Office In Rare Feat
Image
After raising the bar on what a movie can open to during the pandemic with F9‘s $70M weekend, Universal is adding a wide-release one-two punch to the weekend with the debut of two titles geared at two different demos: DreamWorks Animation’s The Boss Baby: Family Business, which is set to do $15M+, and Blumhouse’s The Forever Purge, which is looking at $10M+ over three days.

Together with the second weekend of the studio’s F9, which is speeding toward another $28M (-60%), all three movies will not only own the top three spots at the B.O. for Uni, but bring the studio a weekend of $53M+. It will mark the first time since February 11-13, 2005, that a major studio has owned the top three spots at the domestic weekend box office, the last being Sony with Hitch, Boogeyman and Are We There Yet? Hillbilly Elegy Review: Ron Howard, Amy Adams, and Glenn Close Bring a Uniquely American Tale to Life
Glenn Close and Amy Adams in Une ode américaine (2020)
Once in a while, this critic feels as if he goes against the grain of the entire movie critique establishment. That is firmly the case with Hillbilly Elegy.

The J.D. Vance book of the same name was a huge hit and, supposedly, was an introduction to Trump’s America and an explanation for how the country voted in 2016. I prefer to think of it is a memoir about a boy who grows up and does good, despite the anchor pulling him down that is his family.

Ron Howard has brought Hillbilly Elegy to life for Netflix, and it features two Oscar-worthy turns by two actresses who have long been overlooked for an Academy Award, Amy Adams and Glenn Close. They play mother and daughter, with Adams also portraying the maternal role to Vance (Gabriel Basso). Well, at least she tries.

More often than not, Vance is the more mature one in this relationship.

Everything New On Netflix, Hulu, Prime, Disney Plus And More This Weekend
With more and more states seeing an uptick in coronavirus infections, a second wave of quarantine and social distancing seems to be more likely than ever before. Heck, in some areas of the country, it’s already taking place. Add to that sweltering summer heat waves, and staying indoors with your favorite streaming services doesn’t seem so bad anymore – if it ever did.

Especially when considering there are now more streaming services available than there ever have been in the past. A few years ago, people debated on whether you should subscribe to Netflix or Amazon Prime, for the most part. Now, they’re joined by a wealth of other competitors. Some, like Disney+ and HBO Max, haven proven to be admirable opponents. Others, like CBS All Access and Peacock, not so much.

Regardless of whom you subscribe to, though, there’s a solid amount of content coming to your home device this weekend,...

Disney Plus Added 12 New Movies And TV Shows Today
It’s Friday, and you know what that means, Disney lovers? Yes, a load of new additions are going up on Disney Plus. This week, there’s a mix of documentaries, the latest episodes of the streaming service’s ongoing shows and a couple of movies we haven’t seen before on the site. One of which is only the second ever X-Men film to be made available on D+.

The two pics in question are Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul, the 2017 soft reboot of the Fox family comedy franchise based on Jeff Kinney’s books, and X-Men: Apocalypse. The 2016 superhero flick was the sequel to 2014’s Days of Future Past, which fittingly just debuted on D+ last weekend. These are the first two X-movies on the service, with The Wolverine and 2000’s X-Men to come later this year as part of D+’s Summer Movie Nights schedule.

Disney Plus Is Adding 11 New Movies And TV Shows This Week

This week, on July 17th, the streamer will be adding yet another set of movies and series to its collection, and here’s a quick overview of them:

Disney Plus Announces Over 50 New Movies/TV Shows For July
Despite only launching in November, Disney Plus has already brought in nearly 55 million subscribers, who’ve been enjoying all of their content hailing from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Star Wars franchise, Pixar, almost their entire back catalogue of animated films and much, much more.

However, it’s fair to say that when it comes to original material, Disney Plus hasn’t been bringing us very much. Sure, The Mandalorian was a major hit, but apart from that, none of their in-house projects have really stirred up any buzz. Unless, of course, you want to count Artemis Fowl, which has been making waves for all the wrong reasons.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like things will be improving on that front anytime soon, either. The Mouse House has just announced what’s headed our way in July and as you can see below, the list is lacking when it comes to buzzy original titles.

Bumblebee Lights the Way in Cool New Comic-Con Poster
Paramount has unveiled a new poster for Bumblebee. The San Diego Comic-Con exclusive poster made its way online following the studio's presentation for the upcoming Transformers spin-off at the event. Unfortunately, they have yet to release any of the footage that was screened, which sounds like it was pretty fantastic, but this poster is also quite great and further gives us hope that this may be taking the franchise in the right direction.

This is yet another very solid poster for Bumblebee, following in the footsteps of the previously released theatrical poster and the fresh Bumblebee Comic-Con footage. This one takes a more comic book/street art approach. The entire thing is draped in yellow and black, the titular Autobot sketched out in black against the yellow background. His classic Vw Beetle form is seen driving through his legs at the bottom. If you had never seen a Transformers movie before,...

Dwayne Johnson Teases DC Cameos in Black Adam and Shooting Will Start in 2019
Dwayne Johnson recently sat down with FilmStarts for an interview and it's was there he revealed that Black Adam could start shooting in early 2019. He also teased that some DC characters will appear in the film. When talking about when the film would start shooting, he said:

"With Black Adam I don’t think we’re going to start early next year. Early next year right now it looks like I’m going to be shooting Jumanji, and then after that if everything goes well I’ll shoot a movie called Red Notice with Rawson Thurber again, with Gal Gadot, and another actor yet to be named. But Black Adam possibly at the end of next year. It’s coming along great, the script is coming along great we’re very happy with it."

Johnson went on to tease that some other DC heroes may show up:

The Rock's Black Adam Movie Gets Undateable Writer
Pierce Brosnan, Aldis Hodge, Dwayne Johnson, Sarah Shahi, and Noah Centineo in Black Adam (2022)
New Line Cinema's long-awaited Black Adam movie is finally moving forward, with the studio bringing on writer Adam Sztykiel (Undateable) to pen the script. Dwayne Johnson is starring as Black Adam and producing with his Seven Bucks Productions company Hiram Garcia and Flynn Picture Company's Beau Flynn. There is no director attached at this time, but with a writer finally on board, this long-gestating project is finally happening.

Dwayne Johnson has been attached to play Black Adam since July 2014, when he was still slated to appear in New Line's Shazam! After plenty of rumors surfaced, it was confirmed earlier this year that Shazam and Black Adam are two movies, instead of Black Adam merely playing the villain in the Shazam! movie. There are still no story details at this time, and it remains to be seen if there are any elements in the earlier Shazam! scripts when Black Adam...

Dwayne Johnson's Black Adam Film Will Be Written By The Writer of Alvin And The Chipmunks: The Road Chip
Dwayne Johnson's Black Adam film is taking a big step forward with the hiring of a screenwriter to write the script. According to The Tracking Board, Warner Bros. is going to hire Undatable creator Adam Sztykiel to write the script.

This is an interesting choice as he's also the same guy who wrote the films Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Raod Chip, Due Date, and Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul. These aren't really the greatest movies, but he must've had a solid story pitch that sold Johnson and the studio executives on hiring him.

There's still no director attached to the film project yet, but that will come in time. First things first... they want to get a script in place to help lure a director onto the project.

It's already been confirmed that Black Adam will not appear in Shazam! The first time we...

As the September box office attempts to get 2017 back on track*the month is currently up 14% compared to last year*the chapter ends on what was a dismal August 2017 at the domestic box office. August was the fourth month in a row to show a decline compared to the previous year, all of which contributed to the worst Summer movie season in over ten years, in which the total summer gross failed to top $4 billion for the first time since 2006. August 2017 wrapped up as the worst August in twenty years with calendar grosses delivering a combined $657.7 million from 225 movies, 35.5% behind last year's gross and failing to top $700 million for the first time since 2000. Thanks to the continued performance of Annabelle: Creation, which just topped $100 million domestically yesterday, the month did deliver a $100+ million earner, a feat that looked as if it might not happen not too long ago. Annabelle also...

Bumblebee - John Cena Joins The Cast, Film Gets New Release Date And Synopsis
The Transformers franchise may never actually end. Transformers: The Last Knight, which has seen its domestic theatrical run nearly come to a complete close, only made $128.8 million domestically, down from the fourth chapter's $245 million, and Dark of the Moon's $352 million. In olden days, this would spell disaster for a blockbuster franchise, but due to growing global markets where Transformers has had insane success, there will be no shortage of Transformers films in the coming years. In fact, Transformers is becoming a proper movie universe like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, DC Extended Universe, and Dark Universe, with the next film set to be the spinoff titled Bumblebee.

Today, in a press release, Paramount Pictures announced a new release date, new cast members, and a synopsis for the first of the spinoff films following Michael Bay's departure from directing the series -- as he promised. Production started today, with Bumblebee now...

Bumblebee Spinoff Begins Filming and Announces Release Date
The Bumblebee movie has released a lot of news in one day with casting, release date, and a return to a simpler driving experience.

A press release from Paramount announced today the Transformers Bumblebee spinoff movie began principal photography and will shoot entirely in California. The movie will take place in 1987 with the Autobot scout on the run, hurt, and alone. Taking refuge in a junkyard he is discovered by a young girl named Charlie played by Hailee Steinfeld. She helps repair him and befriends the yellow Vw bug who is more than meets the eye. Back up for a second, Volkswagen Beetle? Yes guys the bee is returning to his form that he was first introduced to us in. Now I fully expect at some point he’ll become a newer version of the bot we saw in the first Transformers movie. But for now I can’t wait...

Bo Report: Sony's Spider-Man reboot flies high
'Spider-Man: Homecoming.'.

Sony.s $US175 million bet on rebooting the flagging Spider-Man franchise looks like paying off as Spider-Man: Homecoming smashed opening records for the series in 56 international markets last weekend, including Australia.

The action-adventure starring 20-year-old Tom Holland as Peter Parker, alongside Robert Downey Jr and Chris Evans, rang up $10.1 million on 285 locations for a whopping screen average of $36,000.

That obliterates the $5.3 million debut of The Amazing Spider Man 2: Rise of Electro in 2014, which finished up earning just $16 million.

Just the second feature directed by Jon Watts, who made his debut with the obscure 2015 thriller Cop Car, the Marvel Studios/Pascal Pictures production raked in an estimated $116 million in the Us, the studio.s second biggest opening behind Spider-Man 3.s $151.1 million in 2007, and $140 million on 23,400 screens internationally.

Bo Report: Indie releases continue to struggle while 'Despicable Me 3' wins
Lady MacBeth..

With school students on holiday around the country, it was no surprise to see Despicable Me 3 seize the top spot at Australian cinemas last weekend, while Transformers: The Last Knight nosedived.

The House, notionally a comedy starring Amy Poehler and Will Ferrell as a couple who persuade a friend to set up a casino in his half-empty mansion so they can send their daughter to college, failed dismally, mirroring the Us debut.

Lady MacBeth and Monsieur Chocolat struggled on debut despite glowing reviews, continuing a generally grim run for independent releases this year.

Transmission.s Lion, eOne.s La La Land (with a lot of help from its six Oscars) and A Dog.s Purpose have been among the handful of indie break-outs.

Wallis Cinemas. Bob Parr told If, .I constantly get people saying we don.t want to see all these loud action movies but there isn.t anything else.

Box Office Weekend: Wonder Woman Commands Respect
Yet again, a blockbuster that everyone predicts will champion the weekend comes in and does just that as Wonder Woman, directed by Patty Jenkins and starring Gal Gadot, easily assumed the top spot at the box office this weekend. Amassing an impressive $100.5 million, the first solo film story of everyone’s favorite Amazon princess finished well ahead of the pack and set the standard for the rest of this summer’s blockbuster hopefuls. In fact, it can also boast the sixteenth largest opening weekend for a comic book adaptation, and the sixth highest if you don’t count sequels.

Last week’s top two finishers, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, dropped to third- and fourth-place respectively earning $21.6 million and $9.7. Meanwhile, Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie managed to overtake Captain Jack and finish with $23.5 million, which was good enough for a second-place finish.

David Thewlis, Saïd Taghmaoui, and Gal Gadot in Wonder Woman (2017)
How ‘Wonder Woman’ Shattered Box Office Records
David Thewlis, Saïd Taghmaoui, and Gal Gadot in Wonder Woman (2017)
Patty Jenkins’ “Wonder Woman” (Warner Bros.) starring Gal Gadot dominated the weekend box office with a $100-million record performance that drew media hoopla as the best-ever female-directed wide release. But that achievement is not the only news out of the weekend Top Ten box office. D.C Comics’ newest entry soared on multiple levels — see below — but DreamWorks Animation’s “Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie” (20th Century Fox) also exceeded expectations.

But one week alone won’t set the summer box office to rights. Neither of last week’s weak openers, “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” (Disney) and “Baywatch” (Paramount), will have box-office legs. And the five holdovers in the bottom half of the Top Ten took in a miserable $11 million altogether.

The Top Ten

1. Wonder Woman (Warner Bros.) New – Cinemascore: A; Metacritic: 76; Est. budget: $249 million

$100,505,000 in 4,165 theaters; PTA (per theater average): $24,131; Cumulative: $100,505,000

2. Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie...

Wonder Woman Crushes with $100.5M Box Office Win
David Thewlis, Saïd Taghmaoui, and Gal Gadot in Wonder Woman (2017)
Heading into its opening weekend, the Wonder Woman box office tracking was inconsistent, at best. Most box office analysts had predicted an opening weekend debut between $65 million and $80 million, although some predicting a debut as high as $105 million. As it turns out, the latter estimate was more accurate, with Wonder Woman easily taking the top spot with $100.5 million. This tally breaks a box office record held by Sam Taylor-Johnson's Fifty Shades of Grey, as the highest opening weekend for a movie directed by a female director ($85.1 million).

There has been a huge wave of buzz building after the Wonder Woman early reactions started rolling in after the first press screening last month, with the movie scoring an impressive 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Box Office Mojo reports that Wonder Woman opened in 4,165 theaters, pulling in an impressive $24,131 per-screen average. The superhero adventure has also taken in an additional $122.5 million internationally...

'Wonder Woman' Set to Lead Post-Memorial Day Weekend Charge
David Thewlis, Saïd Taghmaoui, and Gal Gadot in Wonder Woman (2017)
Saturday Am Update: Wonder Woman is looking strong out of the gate, delivering an estimated $38.85 million on Friday, which includes $11 million from Thursday previews. This is nearly identical to the performance of the first Guardians of the Galaxy, which brought in $11.2 million from previews, delivered $37.8 million on Friday and ultimately opened with $94.3 million, suggesting a $95-100 million opening is in the offing. Wonder Woman received an "A" CinemaScore from opening day audiences, which was 52% female vs. 48% male. Overseas, Wonder Woman is now up to $47.1 million, bringing the worldwide cume to $85.95 million so far. Fox's release of the DreamWorks Animated feature, Captain Underpants, is looking at a sturdy, second place finish after an estimated $8 million on Friday, looking to finish around $25 million for the weekend. You can check out all of the Friday estimates right here and we'll be back tomorrow morning with a full look at the weekend box office.

Wonder Woman (1975)
Can Wonder Woman Save the Sinking Summer Box Office?
Wonder Woman (1975)
Many times, movies that open in the first weekend of June, following the Memorial Day weekend, take a big hit, since the winner of the Holiday usually repeats in its second weekend. That definitely won't be the case heading into this weekend, with Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and Baywatch both underperforming. Audiences' lack of interest in this sequel and TV show adaptation resulted in the worst Memorial Day box office weekend since 1999. That puts even more pressure on Warner Bros.' Wonder Woman to not only revitalize their Dceu franchise, but also kick start the summer box office as a whole. We're predicting that it should have no trouble beating both Pirates of the Caribbean 5 and fellow newcomer Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie to take the top spot with a projected $94.6 million.

This projection is ultimately higher than most of the Wonder Woman box office projections,...

Pirates 5 Wins Memorial Day Weekend Box Office with $77 Million
Johnny Depp, Javier Bardem, Geoffrey Rush, Kaya Scodelario, Brenton Thwaites, Pablo, and Chiquita in Pirates des Caraïbes : La Vengeance de Salazar (2017)
Heading into the Memorial Day weekend, most box office analysts predicted that Disney's family-friendly adventure Pirates of the Carbbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales would have no trouble taking down the R-rated comedy Baywatch at the box office. The only question was how much would these Pirates beat the lifeguards by, and today we have our answer. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales easily took the top spot with $62.6 million over the three-day weekend and $77 million over the four-day holiday weekend. While it was certainly an easy win, it also proves that this franchise has lost some of its luster.

Box Office Mojo reports that this pirate adventure opened in 4,276 theaters, pulling in a solid $18,018 per-screen average. While a $77 million opening would be huge for most movies, it is actually the second worst debut in Pirates franchise history, just behind the $46.6 million debut of the first movie,...

Box Office Weekend: Pirates 5 Easily Wins Holiday Box Office
As pretty much everyone expected, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales planted the Jolly Roger atop the box office and took no prisoners, bringing in $62.2 million over the holiday weekend (not including the actual holiday of course). The fifth film in the Pirates series easily bested second-place finisher Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 while also bringing in an estimated $208.4 million internationally. The series has easily proven it still retains its sea (and revenue earning) legs.

The aforementioned Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 brought in an additional $19.9 million, bringing its domestic gross in just four weeks to $333.2 million. Meanwhile, the international numbers for the film have soared to over $450 million, bringing its overall total to a staggering $783.3 million, which surpasses the first Guardians of the Galaxy. Dwayne Johnson and Baywatch easily took third place with $18.1 million, bringing the latest television-to-film adaptation’s domestic total to $22.7 million. Alien: Covenant...

Last Weekend (2014)
‘Pirates’ Disappoints and ‘Baywatch’ Sank: Why This Is the Wrong Kind of Record-Setting Memorial Day Weekend
Last Weekend (2014)
“Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” (Disney) was an easy #1 for the holiday weekend. And considering domestic franchise fatigue, and much stronger foreign results, it’s hardly a failure. (The same can’t be said for the stumbling Paramount and “Baywatch.”)

However, both fell short of even managed expectations. And with some really ugly drops among holdovers, one of the weakest holiday weekends in decades — and easily, the worst in adjusted grosses for the century.

One reason is Memorial Day is no longer the must-have date for theaters, but that’s been the case for years. So it’s no excuse for the overall weakness, which suggests some deep-rooted issues that continue to plague the industry.

The Top 10

1. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (Disney) New – Cinemascore: A-; Metacritic: 39; Est. budget: $230 million
