    The Christmas Cottage

6/10 - pretty average Hallmark holiday movie that didn't really draw me in

    Great Steve Lund movie!

Watched this because hubby likes Merritt Patterson & I love watching Steve Lund!! Satisfied both of us: Steve Lund's Ean role was quite appealing, nice to see 'Lacey's' role evolve! Pleasant setting, but the bride character was annoying. Glad we watched it!

    nice

As many Hallmark films, "nice" is the fair word for define it. Because it is exactly a cottage with all eexpected ornaments and furniture and story and with a drop of magic. Romance, sentimental life in low fall, an old friend and a sort of boyfriend and a wedding. All in the familiar package. So, just nice. Against the not convincing acting and saved by secondary characters, the cottage being the first.

Lacey has already given up on love. Her heart's been broken too many times, and now she concentrates on her career as an interior designer in Raleigh, North Carolina. When BFF Ava Callahan asks Lacey to be her maid of honor, she must take on a few responsibilities, including making sure the Callahan family cottage is perfect for the honeymoon. Legend has it that if newlyweds spend their first night there, everlasting love and happiness follow. Lacey isn't sure she buys into that notion. Still, when she finds herself snowed in there with Charlie, Ava's brother, Lacey has to reconsider if the little house may hold some romantic magic after all.

The film would not be bad had it cast someone else as the male lead. Steve Lund can not make his part come to life. Merritt Patterson however makes the most of what is given to her.

The hidden message however in this film is "Women who are never married will never be happy".

The film does nothing original. The fun thing to with this movie is to see if you can figure what other Hallmark Movies were filmed at the same locations that were used here.

    Everlasting love at Christmas

It was not as if 'The Christmas Cottage' didn't have any potential from the get go or doomed for failure before it even began. It did sound as if it wasn't any different from the usual festive Hallmark formula, albeit with a few tweaks, but it also sounded like a charming and pleasant way, without being much special but never offending, of spending 90 minutes or so. Besides, not every festive Hallmark film is bad, some of them are surprisingly decent.

'The Christmas Cottage' was a case of being neither among the best or worst of them. Somewhere in between more like. It fits the distinction of being a likeable enough diversion that didn't irritate me, but it did contain some major flaws and was nothing special at the end of the day. If asked as to whether it is worth a look, my answer would be a small yes but it is a long way from a must see and more a one-time watch to be seen for festive Hallmark completest sake.

Beginning with the good, 'The Christmas Cottage' looks nice enough. Liked the scenery particularly, which was suitably idyllic. Music in film, television etc. is very important for me to talk about, being a musician, and it has some well chosen tracks and fits nicely. Not over the top or used too much, both of which can be annoyances, while the scoring doesn't come over as too syrupy even if at the end of the day it doesn't stick in the brain for long.

Writing-wise, 'The Christmas Cottage' has its moments. It flows more than other Hallmark Christmas films and doesn't take itself too seriously or too much like a joke. Likewise with the story, which does show signs of a warm heart and charm and is not hard to follow at least. Some sweet enough moments in the romantic chemistry. Merritt Patterson and Britney Wilson are appealing and the supporting cast support them competently.

On the other hand, was less impressed by Steve Lund. He never disappeared into his generically written character and looks quite bored. The romantic chemistry has its moments, though more for Patterson and Wilson, but would have been far more convincing if Lund's performance was much stronger and if it was more plausible as to what they see in him. The direction isn't amateurish but can be a bit by the numbers.

Furthermore, too much of the dialogue is cheesy and lays it on too thick with the schmaltz. The story, even for formula Hallmark, was contrived and in serious need of more creativity, because there is the running out ideas and recycling feel which is quite lazy if you ask me. Something that was more obvious in the pace, which did lack energy at times.

Concluding, not bad but a long way from great. 6/10

    • Trivia
Wallowa Lake Lodge, where Ava and Mason's wedding is held in Oregon, exists in real life. However, the filming of this movie, including what is used as the exterior shots of the lodge, does not take place at the real Wallowa Lake Lodge.
    • Goofs
The movie takes place in Oregon just before Christmas. It's almost whole shot inside. However, there are few scenes shot in the downtown which reveal that the movie was shot actually in autumn, and production used artificial snow to hide it. In those few wide shots you can see light green, yellow, and brown leaves on deciduous trees, and some of them are sprayed with artificial snow, and some are not. Almost all deciduous trees are completely bare in the mid of December especially in the harsh continental climate like is in the US northwest.
    • Quotes

Ava: I still think this place is enchanted. There's magic here at Christmas; I can feel it. You know, anyone who's ever stayed here during Christmas time has found true love.

      Lacey: Don't you think that's a myth?

Ava: Well, it's been in my family for generations, and it's been proven right for generations.
