The Japanese term kaiju comes from the Chinese word gui shu, meaning "strange beast," as found in an ancient Chinese text on mythical animals. These days, kaiju evokes only one image, and that is of Godzilla. It is little surprising that a creature of such formidable stature has become synonymous with the word in the modern lexicon.

Director Ishiro Honda, who brought the titular character to life in 1954s Godzilla, once said that monsters are tragic beings whose size and strength unfortunately make them villains in the public eye. U.S. audiences tend to accept Toho's earlier Godzilla movies as being high camp, usually thanks to Gen-x's half-remembered airings of late-'60s kaiju flicks broadcast on Uhf TV channels back in the 1980s. The project will be directed by Atsushi Takahashi (“Doraemon the Movie 2017: Great Adventure in the Antarctic Kachi Kochi”) and hails from Bones, the anime studio behind the well-known “My Hero Academia” in partnership with Orange. The show’s creative team includes Kan Sawada, Toh Enjoe, Kazue Kato, and Studio Ghibli’s Eiji Yamamori.

The series will combine hand-drawn and CG animation styles and will not be related to Netflix’s various “Godzilla” anime films but other details, including voice cast and a specific release date, are under wraps.

Despite the problematic practicalities of its plot mechanics, Over the Moon appears destined to become a family-aimed crowd-pleaser, and also serves as valuable representation for a demographic that’s infrequently set in a protagonist capacity in Western features.

Developed as a commemoration to Osamu Dazai’s 110th birthday, “Human Lost” is the anime adaptation of “No Longer Human”, which is considered the masterpiece of the Japanese author and ranks as the second-best selling novel in Japan. Add to this that Katsuyuki Motohiro of “Psycho Pass” is Chief Director, Fuminori Kizaki of “Afro Samurai” the director and that Polygon Pictures, who were in charge “Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters” the production studio, and you have all the elements for a masterpiece. Let us see if that is actually the case.

Hong Kong-made action-thriller “L Storm” topped the Chinese box office with an opening weekend score of $29.4 million. That gave it nearly 60% market share on another quiet weekend in Chinese theaters.

The weekend was characterized by the release of a large number of smaller titles into a window ahead of the Autumn Festival holiday blockbusters at the end of the month. Only “L Storm” made any significant impact, and was the third highest grossing film worldwide, according to ComScore.

The movie is a sequel to 2016 title “S Storm” and involves popular star Louis Koo as an anti-corruption investigator, this time apparently on the wrong side of the law. Directed by David Lam, it is produced by Raymond Wong’s Pegasus Films, and counts Huace Pictures, Wanda, and Er Dong Pictures as mainland Chinese co-producers. Data from Ent Group show it given a wide release, with over 120,000 screenings per day.

The anime version of Godzilla continues from where the first part ended, although this time, the non-Godzilla, non-battle aspect seems to be much improved. Let us take things from the beginning though.

It’s a busy Fifth of July for Netflix on the animation front. The streamer has ordered a pair of new anime series — Ultraman and Kengan Ashura — renewed rookie Aggretsuko and set premiere dates for three other new series and one sophomore.

Season 2 of Castlevania will kick off October 26, and launch dates are final for the new series Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle (July 18), Dragon Pilot (September 21) and Cannon Busters (April 1). Read their descriptions below.

Is Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle really going to premiere this week in Netflix? It sure seems that way, according to a new report. No release date was given, but it could go live late Thursday evening, or the very early morning of Friday. This is very exciting news since many Godzilla fans in North America thought that it was going to be a while before the animated movie was available to stream.

Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle is the second movie in the planned trilogy and follows last year's massively popular Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters. We've got a cool new trailer for Toho's upcoming sequel to Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters. The sequel was previously known as Godzilla: The City Mechanized For Final Battle, but the new more Americanized title of the film is Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle. This movie looks like it's going to be filled with some epic action! I enjoyed the first film, so I'm pretty excited about this sequel! 

In the sequel, the surviving pilots who came to Earth to take down Godzilla in the first film have now joined up with a mysterious group of humans who have been living on the planet. It's there that they learn that "the key to defeating the King of the Monsters may be Mechagodzilla, a robotic weapon thought to have been lost nearly 20,000 years ago."
