In an action/adventure anime like The Legend of Korra, the protagonist might lose some fights, but heroes like Avatar Korra never lose when it counts the most. Korra only lost fights to build up the suspense and drive some dark plot points, but being the protagonist, Korra could never be defeated when the stakes reached their peak. No matter the odds, Korra prevailed anytime her team could not afford to lose.
Even if Korra's plot armor as the protagonist was rather obvious at times, that didn't subtract from the sheer excitement of those fights, and those bender fights were on par with anything fans ever saw in Avatar: The Last Airbender. Some fights, in particular, Korra either won because she was the protagonist, or at least survived when her enemies meant to utterly destroy her. The world needed its Avatar, so the plot made sure Korra survived against the...

In a terrifying beginning, “Papa” throws us into chaos: Ming, 15, kills his mother and sister with a meat knife, breaking up his family. The shocking event serves as the story’s pivot. Yuen (Sean Lau) and Yin (Jo Koo) run a busy 24-hour restaurant where community life thrives amidst the smell of fried noodles. Before the tragedy, the family seems normal. Tension, shown by Ming’s shyness and obvious mental problems, lies beneath this surface.
Yuen deals with guilt and the unanswered question, “Why?” in The Aftermath, a visceral study of grief. The non-linear narrative that reflects his broken mind draws us into a philosophical discussion of causality. Flashbacks show glimpses of better times, contrasting warmth with the cold reality of loss and reminding us how quickly joy can turn into despair.
This structure doesn’t follow a straight line; it reflects the chaos of grief and is stylistic. Between joy and despair,...

The Legend of Korra introduced the newest member of the long-standng Avatar Cycle, the hotheaded Avatar Korra. Unlike her Airbender predecessor, Korra was a hands-on, action-oriented Avatar who didn't delve very deeply into idealism or spirituality at first. This meant that councilman Tarrlok was actually correct at first, that Korra was a half-baked Avatar with a lot to learn. Over time, Korra grew into her role and proved many times that she was becoming an exemplary Avatar after all.
For all of Korra's mistakes and disasters in The Legend of Korra, like unwisely picking a fight with Tarrlok, she also made great strides as a teenage Avatar who could do more than bend the four elements. Over four seasons/Books, Korra used her wisdom, kindness, and strength of spirit to inspire other people and save the world from certain doom many times. Ten particular scenes stand out, which demonstrate Korra's remarkable growth as Aang's successor.

Dre (Miriam A. Hyman) was a key character in The Chi, but her abrupt exit left some viewers scratching their heads. Dre is first introduced in The Chi in season 3, episode 1, "Foe 'Nem", as a high school counselor and Nina Williams' (Tyla Abercrumbie) new partner, eventually marrying her. Nina is the perfect person to slide into Kevin's (Alex R. Hibbert) and Kiesha's (Birgundi Baker) lives, and she takes her role as a co-parent to Nina's children seriously. New characters are often introduced in this Showtime original series, but Dre made a real impact.
While Dre was never a part of the main cast, she appeared in nearly every episode of seasons 3 through 6 and provided a strong foundation for her family. Not only was Hyman excellent, Dre was a strong LGBTQ+ character in the popular series, and her relationship with Nina was normalized to the point that it was barely even commented on.

Little House on the Prairie didn't shy away from dark themes, featuring episodes on murder, rape, disease outbreaks, and addiction issues. From epidemics like typhus to heartbreaking storylines involving blindness and child deaths, the show delved into heavy subject matter. The show's willingness to explore dark and disturbing topics, such as violence and tragedy, offered a stark contrast to its typically wholesome nature.
This article contains mentions of sexual assault, violence, and death.
Little House on the Prairie had a lot of dark and sad episodes that sometimes seemed out of place in a show that was normally as wholesome as the tales of the Ingalls family. Little House on the Prairie premiered in 1974, an American historical drama series based on the children's novels written by Laura Ingalls Wilder. The books were based on her childhood in the American Midwest in the late 1800s. However, for a TV show based on children's novels,...

The following contains spoilers for the My Hero Academia manga.
As a whole, My Hero Academia is a hopeful and inspiring shonen anime adventure where courage, kindness, and friendship always win over hatred, despair, and evil. That fact is reflected in this anime's many inspiring character arcs, depicting lovable characters who push themselves to become stronger and nobler as heroes in training. Ochaco Uraraka, Eijiro Kirishima, and Hitoshi Shinso are all fine examples of what a personal Plus Ultra looks like, but not all character arcs go in that direction.
My Hero Academia also involves some grim and dark personal arcs, some for heroes and others for villains. A dark character arc may involve tough subjects like abuse, abandonment, exploitation, and other trauma. In some cases, these characters make their arcs even darker by paying that misery forward to become monsters, and in other cases, the characters are victims who...

The Pitch: A Meddlesome Producer’s Bloodiest, Briniest Catch of the Day
As titillating as it is atrocious, “Humanoids from the Deep” has everything. Sandy boobs. Practical gore. A woman director undermined by Roger Corman. Garnish with those dead dog scenes, and what more could you ask of a creature feature from the summer of 1980?
Starring Doug McClure as a hero fisherman, Ann Turkel as an inquisitive biologist, and Vic Morrow in a shifty special performance, this sluggish monster invasion imagines a community ravaged by sea creatures (Aka clumsy actors in suits...

The Chi’s Emmett is a smooth talker, as he himself notes in this week’s midseason premiere. “I’ve got the gift of gab,” he confidently tells Jada and Darnell. “With women, not criminals!” his mother shoots back. It’s an important point, given the conversation that Emmett thinks he’s ready for by the end of the episode. (Spoiler alert: He has no idea how much worse things can get.)
And that’s really saying something, given that Emmett was already at a lifetime low, having just botched a murder attempt on the high-powered gangster who runs the South Side of Chicago.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 did not just have a ‘two’ in its name, it also gave players two Spider-Man’s to play with. That’s just one example of how much thought and effort the makers at Insomniac Studios put into making the game. And it did pay off. It turned out to be a critical and financial success when it launched in October 2023.

Most of us have quietly curtailed our lockdown hobbies, but internet creator Teigan Reamsbottom is still getting up at 4 a.m. to curate camp-classic pop culture video clips. He also does his best to improve the video quality using a dedicated gaming computer he’s stuffed full of Ram and a software suite that uses machine-learning algorithms to preserve the clips’ original characteristics.
In a world where movies can be vanished for tax write-offs and physical media can be scarce, it’s heartening to see pop-culture artifacts unearthed — even if it means that no ’80s or ’90s celebrity is safe.

The Pitch: In Defense of Female Hysteria and Cinematic Foreplay
Final girls have it rough in general. Running from chainsaws is exhausting. Hanging on meat hooks is no fun. And if you get possessed by a demon, your boyfriend just will not see you the same way. Still, there’s a special sadism to the torture inflicted on scream queens sacrificed to horror movies about female hysteria.

Keira Knightley’s slender frame, sharp features, and expressive eyes give her a stunning presence on screen. She carries herself with grace and poise, even in gritty roles.
She debuted in a major film when she was just 12 years old, playing Sabé in Star Wars: Episode I—The Phantom Menace (1999).
Keira Knightley as Sabé in Star Wars: Episode I—The Phantom Menace
Knightley got big roles, but it was Pirates of the Caribbean that made her a global star. In the first movie in 2003, she played Elizabeth Swann alongside Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom.
Yet, the fame wasn’t enough for the actress as she admitted to feeling “constrained” in her career after starring in the famous franchise.

Exclusive: German production and sales company Augenschein, whose credits include Joseph Gordon-Levitt thriller 7500 (pictured) and Anna Kendrick sci-fi Stowaway, has sold a minority stake to Erfttal Film, the longtime shareholder in All Quiet On The Western Front producer Amusement Park.
Jonas Katzenstein and Maximilian Leo, who run Cologne-based Augenschein, closed the deal with Erfttal’s Klaus Dohle. The value of the investment was not disclosed but it is understood to be a multi-million dollar investment for a stake in the 20-30% range.
Dohle is a producer and businessman with a long-standing family history in real estate, manufacturing, agriculture and equity investments in Germany and abroad. His associate producer credits include Land of Mine, The Aftermath and A Most Wanted Man.
Under the pact, Augenschein will continue to operate independently but the investment gives the company greater ability to develop, package and produce movies with stronger commercial potential for the global market,...

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: A Midnight Movie for the Love of a Woman
The cinematic understanding of romance is on the run. It’s a sad topic ahead of Valentine’s Day, I know. But the big romantic gestures and sweeping professions of love that once characterized the rom-com genre are now about as welcome in real life as TikTok therapists are welcome on the big screen. Add a family counselor to your next “Clueless” viewing and you just won’t see Paul Rudd the same way; try planting one on your step-sister at...

The Pitch: Drink (Responsibly) Every Time They Say “Cat”
Like midnight movie canonization, the Cat Distribution System works in mysterious ways. The term, as made popular on TikTok, refers to an informal branch of feline government by which every cat-human connection is ostensibly forged. Whether you met Mittens at your local animal shelter — or found Paul Gia-Meowti in an empty boarding school over Christmas break — the central tenets of the C.D.S. suggest that any time a cat and owner find one another that connection was somehow fated.

Happy New Year! ‘Terror Train’ Dares to Ask Whether Dying Is Preferable to Watching a Bad Magic Show
On Friday nights — and special occasions!— IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: You Know, Getting Murdered on a Train Might Still Be Better Than Going to Times Square
The underwhelming New Year’s Eve party is a universal human experience if there ever was one. The holiday is ostensibly the biggest night of the year for debauchery, but burnout, outlandish expectations, and rowdy crowds often turn it into a letdown that makes it a little easier to trade our holiday cheer in for January discipline. But no matter what disappointing experience comes your way tonight, you can take comfort...
