Meryl Streep Promotes Eco-Conscious Storytelling in New PSA: “Climate Change Is Scary”
Image
Meryl Streep is lending her voice to the climate change crisis — literally.

The Oscar-winning icon narrates “Want to Tell a Great Story,” a new PSA that debuted today from the Sustainable Entertainment Alliance made in partnership with the Nrdc’s Rewrite the Future.

“Hey, want to see a story about climate change?” Streep asks in the opening seconds before a series of clips from Get Out, The Lego Movie and Anchorman show characters saying “no” in quick succession. “We get it, we really do. Climate change is scary. It can make us feel, well, a little anxious. And we turn to movies and TV to escape. But what if we changed the question?”

Streep does just that and alters the query: “Want to see a great story? Stories can engage with the climate even as they entertain. Whether they are dramatic or funny or stories of courage, stories about protecting what you love,...

Jack Black Is Game For A School Of Rock Sequel, But With One Condition
Image
In 2003, popular actor Jack Black found himself in the middle of the scandal of the century. He managed to squirm his way into a prep school under false pretenses, committed the misdemeanor of impersonating a teacher named Ned Schneebly for the sake of acquiring a little rent money, and led the students to an epic battle of the bands performance that we're still talking about over two full decades later. It was a whole big thing.

Obviously, "School of Rock" went down in history as one of Black and director Richard Linklater's finest moments, not to mention its impact on the ensemble of incredibly talented child actors, all of whom actually played their respective instruments in the film. In short, it was the pop-culture event that inspired a whole generation of kids to embrace their inner punk-rock anarchists, eventually leading to a Broadway musical adaptation and even a short-lived Nickelodeon series.

In the style of a gritty 70s rockumentary, Early performs stand-up and explosive song covers from Britney to Neil Young, intercut with Spinal Tap-esque backstage sketches.

HBO Max New Releases: March 2023
Image
There’s nothing quite like when HBO is airing one of its trademark watercooler-worthy dramas weekly. Thankfully, we’ll get to it experience exactly that and more on HBO Max in March 2023.

The big ticket item on HBO Max this March is undoubtedly Succession Season 4 on March 26. Part prestige drama and part screwball comedy, Succession is about as fun a watch as they come. Season 4 of the series about egregious wealth will find the Roy siblings reeling after trying and failing to take down their father, Logan (Brian Cox).

HBO Max’s other major TV option this month is another weekly release from HBO. Matthew Rhys returns as the titular lawyer in Perry Mason Season 2 on March 6. Season 1 of this period piece reboot flexed the classic TV character’s detective skills. From the look of the trailer, it seems as though this is the year Perry makes his name in the court room.

Connie Britton on What Drew Her to ‘The White Lotus’ Role: “Women Can Be Written as Too Reactive”
Image
Click here to read the full article.

The White Lotus was a reunion for Connie Britton and creator Mike White, who wrote the 2017 feature Beatriz at Dinner, starring Britton alongside Salma Hayek. As the wealthy Nicole Mossbacher in Lotus, Britton says she had the opportunity to play a character with real nuance who reflects our reality back to us as viewers — and the role has earned her a fifth Emmy nomination (she garnered nods for American Horror Story, Nashville and Friday Night Lights). Britton spoke with THR about the process of approaching this character and crafting her arc with White and what it was like working during the height of Covid on such a singular project.

Did you think of the show as an Emmy-caliber project when you signed on?

It [was] really just about the opportunity to play [an] amazing character and to do something that feels like it will get...

Animaniacs (2020)
Hulu New Releases: November 2021
Animaniacs (2020)
As the Hollywood blockbuster machine continues to dust itself off and release some early winter hits, Hulu is going in a bit of a different direction with its list of new releases for November 2021.

There are no big Hulu original films of note this month. Instead there’s a whole host of original series. The TV parade starts on Nov. 5 with the release of Animaniacs season 2. Also getting a second season this month is monarchal comedy The Great on Nov. 19. The most intriguing series, however, is animated Marvel comedy Marvel’s Hit Monkey. As its name so graciously implies, this is a show about a hit monkey…as in monkey assassin. Naturally the hit monkey is haunted by the ghost of Jason Sudeikis because it’s important that everything make sense.

Though Hulu doesn’t have any original movies in November, its list of library movie titles is quite vast.

Between Enlightened, School of Rock, Beatriz at Dinner and impressive seasons on Survivor and The Amazing Race, White has been a great fixture of film and TV over the past couple decades. In honor of The White Lotus success, we thought we would travel back in time to one of his earliest performances and screenplays - Chuck and Buck.

The early digital film feels like a relic of another time, especially compared to White’s more polished HBO work as of late. The advent of digital allowed more filmmakers a chance to tell their stories as they were able to do it on the cheap.

‘The White Lotus’: Everything You Need to Know About the HBO Series
Image
Mike White’s return to television is inching closer. The filmmaker is slated to return to HBO via “The White Lotus,” which will premiere on HBO in July.

“The White Lotus” will mark White’s reunion with HBO following “Enlightened,” his two-season comedy series that was canceled by the premium cabler in 2013. Since then, White has written scripts for “Beatriz at Dinner,” “The Emoji Movie,” “Pitch Perfect 3,” and the most recent Disney+ feature “The One and Only Ivan.” He also contributed to the “School of Rock” TV series that ran from 2016 to 2018.

Amid the pandemic, “The White Lotus” was filmed in Hawaii under strict health and safety guidelines.

“It’s beyond exciting to return to HBO with this project and such an incredible cast,” White said in a statement last year. “I am very grateful to everyone who has made it possible for us to bring our little bubble to Hawaii,...

‘Yes Day’ Review: Jennifer Garner and Edgar Ramírez Learn to Just Say Yes to Their Kids in a Comedy You May Want to Say No to
Image
Twenty-five years ago, “Yes Day” would have been a dumbed-down high-concept Hollywood family comedy, and you could say it still is. The difference is that now it’s the Netflix version, which means, in this case, that it’s not so much “dumb” as post-psychological. The premise, for anyone who’s a parent, will sound rather catchy. Allison (Jennifer Garner), taken to task by her three children for being a Debbie Downer of a mom — a joyless disciplinarian who’s perpetually saying “No” — agrees to indulge her kids in a Yes Day. That is, for an entire day, she and her husband, the genial Carlos (Edgar Ramirez), will have to say yes to any request, big or small, that the kids make. “No, you can’t do that” isn’t on the table. The idea is that this will act as a kind of do-what-you-please purge for the children — a...

‘Yes Day’ Review: Jennifer Garner and Édgar Ramírez Are Fun, Frazzled Parents in Netflix Family Comedy
Image
In real life, a “yes day” is a recently codified parenting technique where desperate moms and dads bait their kids towards good behavior by rewarding them with a 24-hour period in which the parents can’t say “no” to any of their kids’ requests. Candy for dinner? Sure. Wearing Peppa Pig cosplay to the park? If that’s what they want. Helping a local bear recover the stolen pop-up book he wants to give to his aunt for her birthday? As long as no one gets arrested that sounds just fine.

In Netflix’s “Yes Day,” (cast against type in the role of a fun-loving lawyer dad who twerks within the first 10 minutes ), a “yes day” is basically the Purge for kids. Of course it starts on an innocent note, with the youngest of Allison and Carlos Torres’ three kids forcing her parents to dress up as glitter-spackled superheroes for...

For 24 Hours, Kids Make the Rules in 'Yes Day' Comedy Film Trailer
Jennifer Garner, Edgar Ramírez, Jenna Ortega, Julian Lerner, and Everly Carganilla in Yes Day (2021)
"See, I'm not always a 'fun-killer!'" Netflix has debuted an official trailer for the family comedy Yes Day, from director Miguel Arteta. This is what happens when you finally say "yes" to your kids instead of "no" all the time. Always feeling like they have to say No to their kids and co-workers, Allison and Carlos decide to give their three kids a "Yes Day" -- where for 24 hours the kids make the rules. Little did they know that they'd be going on a whirlwind adventure around Los Angeles, that would bring the family closer to each other than ever before. Oh I don't know, that sounds exactly like what I expect from this let's-go-wild plot. Starring Jennifer Garner, Edgar Ramírez, Jenna Ortega, Julian Lerner, and Everly Carganilla. This looks amusing and extra ridiculous. Enjoy. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Miguel Arteta's Yes Day, direct from ...

Movie Review: Like a Boss
Despite sporting a pedigree of talented people involved in the project, the new comedy, Like a Boss, fails to deliver much of anything in the way of laughs, let alone any real entertainment value for your dollar. The film is consistently mired in a morass of overused comedic clichés and a lifeless plot that never gains the momentum it needs to carry the film from one flimsy comedy bit to the next.

Like a Boss follows best friends Mia and Mel (Tiffany Haddish and Rose Byrne respectively) who not only run the cosmetics company they’ve built together, but also cohabitate in a home that Mia inherited from her mother. Simply put, they are best friends. They’ve been together through thick and thin and seem to share a bond between them that transcends most traditional friendships. But, soon after they and their company are introduced, Mia and Mel run...

‘Like a Boss’ Review: Even Tiffany Haddish Can’t Save This Senseless Friendship Comedy
Salma Hayek, Rose Byrne, and Tiffany Haddish in Lady Business (2020)
Ah, women, that misunderstood demographic — what do they want anyway? In its mad and misguided scramble to appeal to female audiences, Hollywood is unsurprisingly seriously lacking inspiration. Gone are the days when a writer could simply give the leading lady a consummate bachelor to reform, throw in a career-making magazine assignment or traumatic brain injury, and let the games begin. These days, the decision-making men know it can’t be all about love, and the trend has shifted to another slightly less insulting but just as generic topic: Female friendship. While this worked for genuinely funny hits like “Bridesmaids” and “Girls Trip,” which put comedy front and center, their countless copy-cats, such as “Rough Night,” “Ocean’s Eight,” and “The Hustle,” have landed with a thud.

Unfortunately, despite an enticing cast and a highbrow director, “Like a Boss” falls easily into the latter camp. Starring Tiffany Haddish and Rose Byrne as...

‘Like a Boss’: Whoever Made This Inane Comedy Should Be Fired
Salma Hayek, Rose Byrne, and Tiffany Haddish in Lady Business (2020)
The trick to creating successful screen farce is to make sure audiences don’t see you sweat. So it’s not a good sign that the actors are spritzing up a storm in Like a Boss. But what actors! The comic tornado known as Tiffany Haddish seizes the role of Mia Carter, the creative wiz behind a Diy cosmetics company she runs with her numbers-minded best friend, Mel Paige, played by her up-for-anything costar Rose Byrne. The duo work their butts off for laughs that the putatively femcentric script by two first-time screenwriters,...

‘Like a Boss’: Film Review
Salma Hayek, Rose Byrne, and Tiffany Haddish in Lady Business (2020)
Its economic message might be fuzzy. Its feminism, too. But best-friend comedy “Like a Boss” rides Tiffany Haddish and Rose Byrnes’s frisky and believable chemistry to laughs — some worn, some crude, but more than a few delivered deftly and consistently enough to keep audiences smiling if not doubled over.

The two share the house Mia inherited, the one where Mel came to live as a teen when her own family cratered. They were enterprising girls who grew into inventive businesswomen, all the while remaining best friends. They complete each other. Yes, in the rom-com sense, the film — directed by Miguel Arteta — makes clear. Friendship can be one of the great romances, after all.

Owners of their own cosmetics line and boutique, Mia and Mel’s deep affection is tested when cosmetics titan Claire Luna, played by Salma Hayek, swoops in to invest in their self-named company. They are nearly $500,000 in debt,...

‘Like a Boss’ Film Review: Tiffany Haddish and Rose Byrne Play Besties in Predictable Comedy
Salma Hayek, Rose Byrne, and Tiffany Haddish in Lady Business (2020)
It’s never good when you can figure out exactly what will happen in a movie — from the conflict to the pat resolution — within the first 15 minutes. But director Miguel Arteta’s new friendship comedy “Like a Boss” is just like that.

Aside from the charming chemistry between leads Tiffany Haddish and Rose Byrne, the film is a mostly forgettable romp that throws together recycled themes of female entrepreneurship, friendship, and rivalry without making any real impact. It’s a shame, too, because Byrne gets to revive some of her great comedic timing from “Bridesmaids” and goes toe-to-toe with Haddish’s larger-than-life personality; it’s no easy feat, but Byrne nails it. You can tell the two are having fun together, but the movie itself is way too basic to become truly enjoyable.

The plot kicks off with Mel (Byrne) and Mia (Haddish), two business partners being crushed by debt with their eponymous makeup company,...

Tiffany Haddish and Rose Byrne Square Off Against Salma Hayek in ‘Like a Boss’ Trailer (Video)
Salma Hayek, Rose Byrne, and Tiffany Haddish in Lady Business (2020)
In the trailer for “Like a Boss,” Tiffany Haddish and Rose Byrne play two best friends rising in the fashion industry who turn to a beauty queen played by Salma Hayek for help, only for things to get ugly fast.

Haddish and Byrne have a successful business, but they’re deep in debt. And though Hayek motivates them to take charge, she’s really just out to steal their ideas and business. Soon they’re throwing punches, dangling from perilous railings and even smashing breasts together as they all try to prove they’re the boss.

“You don’t have to worry your pretty little head,” Haddish says to Hayek. “My head is not little. It’s just that my breasts are humongous,” she replies.

Salma Hayek to Make Her McU Debut in The Eternals?
Salma Hayek
Salma Hayek is the latest star who may be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
