Daveed Diggs Joins ‘The Boys’ Season 5 as Series Regular
Image
Daveed Diggs is joining the world of “The Boys” as a series regular in Prime Video series’ fifth and final season. Details on Diggs’ role are being kept under wraps.

Based on Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s graphic novel series where the superheroes are the bad guys, “The Boys” is set in a world in which a substance can turn people into superheroes. As such, a legion of corporate-backed celebrity supes enacts their own sense of justice while posing for cameras and covertly doing wet work for the government — kind of like an evil Avengers. The show follows a group of regular humans who work to bring the superheroes down.

“The Boys” is executive produced by Ennis, Robertson, showrunner Eric Kripke, Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, Neal H. Moritz, Pavun Shetty, Phil Sgriccia, Michaela Starr, Paul Grellong, David Reed, Judalina Neira, Jessica Chou, Ken F. Levin and Jason Netter.

You Have to See This Nathan Fielder Acting Moment from The Curse
Image
This article contains spoilers for The Curse episode 4.

A24 and Showtime series The Curse features an impressive roster of actors.

Leading the ensemble of this black comedy is Academy Award-winner Emma Stone, whose property developer Whitney Siegel is an “Eat. Pray. Love.” neon sign brought to life – a well-meaning upper class white woman barely repressing the exploitative impulses roiling underneath. Then there’s series co-creator Benny Safdie, who is fresh off a scene-stealing portrayal as hydrogen bomb creator and certified hater Edward Teller in Oppenheimer. His sleazy reality show producer Dougie Schecter is something to behold, swaggering around with ’90s Howard Stern locks, a fistful of garish rings, and a questionable blood-alcohol content.

The most beguiling member of The Curse cast, however, is co-creator, co-writer, and co-lead Nathan Fielder as Asher Siegel. Though a towering name in television comedy, the Canadian performer has not traditionally been known for his acting roles.

How ‘Jury Duty’ Concocted Its Pitch-Perfect Bromance With the Help of James Marsden
Ronald Gladden in GMA3: What You Need to Know (2020)
This past spring, social media lit up around a very new kind of American Sweetheart: 30-year-old Ronald Gladden, a solar contractor who believed he was signing up for a documentary on the jury system and instead ended up being the adored lead presence of Amazon Freevee’s fish-out-of-water comedy “Jury Duty.” Gladden answered a Craigslist ad, the producers took a shine to him, and history was made.

“So, I wasn’t part of the Ronald process,” Emmy-nominated casting director Susie Farris told TheWrap. “Ronald is a real person, and I don’t cast reality. [Laughs] But you know, obviously, the crazy part about the show is that every single person except for one is an actor.”

And that’s what made “Jury Duty” one of the year’s most singular TV challenges: casting buoyant, quick-witted, versatile actors that the general public would not recognize to improvise against Gladden as his fellow jurors,...

‘Jury Duty’ Casting Director Got ‘Really Lucky’ Finding Fake Jurors: ‘The Whole Show Was a Big Crapshoot’
Image
Casting director Susie Farris got the unique opportunity to participate in the meticulous process of jury selection, choosing all but one of 12 jurors — but it was for an entirely made-up court case.

Even with over two decades of casting experience and credits in “Elf,” “Wet Hot American Summer,” “Speechless” and “Mr. Robot,” she had never been met with a task quite like casting Amazon Freevee’s viral series “Jury Duty,” a hidden-camera, “Truman Show”-esque comedy.

In the weeks after its release, “Jury Duty” has been applauded for its outstanding cast of actors, improv comedians and one Ronald Gladden, the lone, non-actor who believed the entire, absurd court case was real.

Farris spoke with Variety to share her process behind selecting television’s favorite petit jury.

Most casting directors don’t work with improv actors, so what was it like for you? Had you ever done anything like this before?...

Digman! Has Edgar Wright Reprise An Obscure Role From Another Andy Samberg Project [Exclusive]
Image
This week brought the premiere of Andy Samberg's new adult animated comedy series "Digman!" to Comedy Central. The series, which Samberg co-created with "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" producer Neil Campbell, follows a formerly great archaeologist named Rip Digman who has since turned into a laughing stock. And in a world where archeologists are considered huge celebrities, that's an unfortunate situation to be in. But with his crew by his side, Digman tries to get back on top, taking whatever scrappy museum job he can to get by, and that results in him meeting quite the impressive ensemble of characters voiced by an amazing array of actors. In fact, one of them is a filmmaker you might be familiar with.

Edgar Wright, the director behind beloved films like "Shaun of the Dead, "Hot Fuzz," and "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World," was listed among the guest cast members when "Digman!" was announced to the masses.

Image
Rolling off the smashing success of “Lupin,” Netflix and French star Omar Sy have entered a multi-year feature film deal. It’s the streamer’s first deal with a French talent or filmmaker.

The partnership will see Sy’s Paris and L.A.-based production company develop original films for Netflix, with Sy starring in and acting as executive producer on the projects.

“I have experienced Netflix’s collaboration with artists and their passion to bring unique and diverse stories to homes all over the world,” said Sy, who was a creative producer on some episodes of “Lupin.”

Sy added that he was “happy to have the opportunity to extend the relationship and look forward to this next step of our journey together.” Sy broke through with Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano’s hit comedy “The Intouchables” a decade ago, which marked his first leading role after many years in acting.

‘John Bronco’ Teaser Sees Walton Goggins in New Mockumentary From ‘Tour de Pharmacy’ Director
Image
A famous Ford pitchman has gone missing and the John Bronco teaser trailer previews the search to find the living legend. John Bronco is the latest mockumentary outing from director Jake Szymanski, who previously gifts us with 7 Days in Hell, the Wimbledon mock-doc starring Andy Samberg and Kit Harington, and Tour de Pharmacy, also starring Samberg and Orlando Bloom. Now, it's Walton Goggins' turn to put those damn fine comedy skills to use in John Bronco. The teaser trailer previews the mockumentary short which will follow the rise and fall of titular, infamous, and very fictional Ford …...

Walton Goggins Is ‘John Bronco,’ the Greatest Ford Pitchman Who Never Lived in Mockumentary Trailer (Video)
Walton Goggins
Who is John Bronco? He’s a world class racer, a rodeo star, a sex symbol and a legendary pitchman who’s face was instantly recognizable on the Ford Bronco and countless products — and he’s also Walton Goggins and never existed.

But that shouldn’t stop anyone from inflating his legend, as the new short film “John Bronco” aims to do. The mockumentary is the latest from Jake Szymanski, the director who told similarly fake sports legends in the films “Tour de Pharmacy” and “7 Days in Hell.”

“John Bronco” though is a different sort of fake sports icon, a 1966 legend whose jingle went triple-platinum and could be heard in ads for his own cologne, breakfast cereal, video game, action figure and more. The film describes him as the “very embodiment of the American dream, that is, until it all came crashing down.”

Emmy Predictions 2018: Outstanding TV Movie
Last Year’s Winner: “Black Mirror: San Junipero”

Still Eligible: Yes. (The series, not the episode/movie.)

Hot Streak: HBO has won more times in this category than all the other networks combined. The premium network has 19 total Emmys. In second place, CBS and NBC are tied — with six wins each.

Fun Fact: There have been four ties in the TV Movie category, but none since 1993.

Another year, another limited selection of TV Movies. After 2017 saw a Dolly Parton special nominated and an episode of “Black Mirror” win, 2018 is looking to be just as eclectic. Not only is Netflix’s anthology series back with another power player — the buzzed-about Season 4 starter, “U.S.S. Callister” — but Amazon’s original series, a mirror image of Netflix’s offering, is coming to play, too.

“Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams” earned a bit of chatter for two episodes: “Kill All Others,” written and directed by Dee Rees,...

Actress Aurora Perrineau Accuses ‘Girls’ Writer Murray Miller of Raping Her When She was 17
Zosia Mamet, Lena Dunham, Jemima Kirke, and Allison Williams in Girls (2012)
Aurora Perrineau has accused “Girls” writer/executive producer Murray Miller of raping her when she was 17, The Wrap reports. The alleged incident took place in 2012, when Miller was 35; Perrineau provided The Wrap with the results of a polygraph she took in September. “I filed a police report today. I cannot talk about the investigation that is happening currently,” she said.

In her polygraph statement, which the “Passengers” and “Equals” actress says she passed, Perrineau stated that she met Miller during an evening out with friends at the Standard Hotel. She had “consumed some alcoholic beverages” and Miller “was flirting with me. I told him repeatedly that I was 17 years old.” Perrineau’s father is “Lost” star Harold Perrineau.

‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’: This Year’s Halloween Heist Reaffirmed Its Status as One of Broadcast’s Best Comedies
Dirk Blocker, Andre Braugher, Terry Crews, Melissa Fumero, Joe Lo Truglio, Joel McKinnon Miller, Andy Samberg, and Stephanie Beatriz in Brooklyn Nine-Nine (2013)
[Editor’s note: Spoilers for “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” Season 5, Episode 4, “HalloVeen,” follow.]

If you were looking for further proof that “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” is one of the best comedies on television, “HalloVeen” was it. From the cold open of the episode, the show crackled with energy, letting the lighthearted heist competition that’s become a yearly tradition drive the pitch-perfect interactions of the ensemble.

Throw in probably the only good jokes we’re going to hear this fall about “The Handmaid’s Tale” (‘It’s relevant as hell!”) and the unending joy of Captain Holt (Andre Braugher) dismissing a corgi far inferior to his own beloved Cheddar as an “idiot,” and even before the pivotal final minutes this episode was pure joy.

The only disappointment from the actual heist portion of the episode: Andre Braugher saying “cummerbund” is not as funny as Andre Braugher saying “caboodle” during last year’s Halloween heist. (Though “in my belly!” from the opening sequence does lessen the sting to a great extent.

‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ Turned Andre Braugher Loose and Became One of TV’s Best Comedies
Dirk Blocker, Andre Braugher, Terry Crews, Melissa Fumero, Joe Lo Truglio, Joel McKinnon Miller, Andy Samberg, and Stephanie Beatriz in Brooklyn Nine-Nine (2013)
Back in the very first episode of “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” goofy but dedicated Detective Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg) tries to catch a criminal, but his real problem is this: His new boss, Captain Ray Holt (Andre Braugher), wants him to wear a necktie. It feels like a trivial problem when compared to serious police work, but Holt holds firm, establishing himself as the Establishment — “the man” against whom Jake naturally wants to revolt.

At the end of the episode, Jake realizes that Holt’s desire for him to wear a necktie isn’t a petty whim, but a desire to create unity within the squad. The dynamic between the two is seemingly established…except, as the show progresses, it isn’t. Since those early days, Captain Holt has become one of TV’s most interesting and hilarious characters, a fascinating evolution that continues with the premiere of Season 5.

Holt is part...

HBO Viewership Unaffected By Leak, Network Concerned About Breach
The internal leak by the overseas HBO affiliate, Star India, did not hurt the viewership of Sunday’s marvelous episode of Game of Thrones. The episode which caused many fans to consider it as the best, or at least one of the best in the shows run brought in just over 10 million viewers, narrowly beating out the Season 7 premiere according to Deadline. The "Spoils of War" appeared online on the Friday before its scheduled Sunday night viewing slot. Despite the leak of the episode, HBO's epic fantasy series showed no loss in ratings as it was the show's most watched episode to date.

Game of Thrones has always been unpredictable, and now with the increased pace of Season 7, the meetings and battles with major consequences are happening far more often, and fans simply can't risk not tuning in. While they could have found the episode online days before, from what we understand,...

‘Tour De Pharmacy’: How The HBO Cycling Mockumentary Packed In Its Incredible Stars, Including Lance Armstrong
Orlando Bloom, Freddie Highmore, John Cena, Andy Samberg, and Daveed Diggs in Tour de Pharmacy (2017)
At the beginning of our interview, grasping for a way to describe the latest weirdo star-studden comedy sports special airing on HBO, IndieWire referred to “Tour De Pharmacy” as “the latest installment in the ‘Legends of Sports’ franchise.”

“I love that you said that,” star/executive producer Andy Samberg said.

“Are we allowed to say we have a franchise? I mean, I’ll take it,” writer Murray Miller said.

By “franchise,” we meant the ongoing “30 for 30”-inspired sports mockumentary series that began in the summer of 2015 with “7 Days in Hell,” a star-studded comedy special that chronicled a fictional tennis match that reached absurd heights. Starring Samberg and Kit Harrington, the cast also included Mary Steenburgen, Karen Gillan, Lena Dunham, Will Forte, June Squibb, Michael Sheen, Fred Armisen and more, including narration by Jon Hamm.

The year was 1982, an insane and little-known blip in sports history when so many riders got caught doping in the Tour de France that only five out of 170 were allowed to continue the race — all of whom almost definitely were also on drugs. That’s the delightful premise of HBO’s Tour de Pharmacy, the newest documentary-style sports comedy from the team behind HBO’s 7 Days in Hell, about a fictional seven-day tennis match between Andy Samberg in a peroxide-blonde mullet and Kit Harington in short shorts.

‘Tour de Pharmacy’ Review: I Want One of These Sports Comedies Every Year
Two years ago, we got the tennis comedy 7 Days in Hell. Done in the style of a sports documentary, the movie recounted the seven-day saga between two tennis stars. There's plenty to peruse beyond premium cable, of course, as the networks ready sci-fi–inflected procedurals and FX unveils an ambitious new period drama set in the cradle of crack cocaine. Here's what you need to be tuning into this month.

Newswire: Here’s what’s coming to (and leaving from) HBO Now in July
Game Of Thrones finally returns to HBO in July, but it’s not the only thing subscribers will be able to stream on the HBO Go and HBO Now services. All right, it’s definitely the most exciting thing out of the whole batch, but since this new season will only have seven episodes, you’re going to need other things to watch. In July, those other things could include season two of Insecure, season three of Ballers, the series premiere of Room 104, the Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine documentary The Defiant Ones, or an Andy Samberg double feature of the HBO original cycling comedy Tour De Pharmacy and Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping. Other theatrical premieres include Loving, Keeping Up With The Joneses, and Hacksaw Ridge.

You can see the full list of what’s coming and going below.

First Trailer For ‘Daddy’s Home 2’ Starring Mark Wahlberg, Will Ferrell, Mel Gibson & John Lithgow
If there was one element to add to the “Daddy’s Home” sequel to make even more unbearable than it already was in the first place, I’d have to imagine that bringing Mel Gibson into the mix would be at least in the top ten. Following his mind-numbing “He’s back!” tour following the controversies that have shrouded his career while in support of his blood bath pacifist film “Hacksaw Ridge,” he’s now decided that he’ll force his comedic side on viewers in “Daddy’s Home 2.”

Continuing where the original left off with the two characters at peace, things are quickly upended with the arrival of both their fathers — Gibson and John Lithgow — and tension rises again.

Funny New Trailer For HBO's Tour De Pharmacy Features Jeff Goldblum and More
HBO just recently released another trailer for Andy Samberg's Tour de Pharmacy, and it has all sorts of new funny things in it.

As I started to watch the trailer I expected some of the same stuff we talked about from the last trailer. You can check out our article here. But this new trailer is even more amazing especially considering the fact that we get to see Jeff Goldblum in his role in it.

I couldn't be more excited for it. I love mockumentaries, and with an all-star cast like this, you just can't go wrong. Other notable performances in this trailer are Freddie Highmore, Danny Glover and James Marsden as the British announcer who interviews the riders. Just watch it. You'll be happy you do.

New Trailer For ‘Ferdinand’ Is Built To Fight, Born To Love
The simple message that we should judge a book by its cover seems particularly relevant at this moment, and it’s the undercurrent that runs through the upcoming animated flick, “Ferdinand.”

‘Tour De Pharmacy’ Trailer: What Happens When You Train Super Hard on a Bicycle
Orlando Bloom, Freddie Highmore, John Cena, Andy Samberg, and Daveed Diggs in Tour de Pharmacy (2017)
James Marsden looks right at home as an on-air sports journalist in the 1980s. With the big framed glasses and colourful attire, the actor, who typically shines in comedies, is covering the 1982 Tour De Pharmacy. A dangerous year in cycling, with everybody doping. In HBO’s new sports mockumentary, Andy Samberg, John Cena, Orlando Bloom, and a long list of other […]

Full-Length Trailer for HBO's 'Tour de Pharmacy' with Andy Samberg
"This is what happens when we train super hard on the bicycle." HBO has premiered the full-length trailer for the mockumentary comedy Tour de Pharmacy, starring Andy Samberg as a cyclist competing in bicycle races during the 1980s. The film is a hilarious satire making fun of the cycling world and the fact that almost all of the cyclists in the Tour de France were on drugs. The first teaser for this was funny enough to completely sell me, but this one is even better. I can't wait to see this! The full cast includes John Cena, Freddie Highmore, Daveed Diggs, Orlando Bloom, and a whole bunch of others, like Jeff Goldblum and Mike Tyson. Plus there is an appearance by the one-and-only king of doping, Lance Armstrong, which is a bit crazy. Everything about this seems so absurd, but that's why it looks so damn good. Enjoy it! Here's...

Andy Samberg Races Into Comedy In New Trailer For ‘Tour De Pharmacy’
While it might not be at the same level of Steven Spielberg‘s absurdly great cast for “The Papers,” the ensemble assembled for Andy Samberg‘s “Tour De Pharmacy” is not slouching one bit. Orlando Bloom, Daveed Diggs, John Cena, Dolph Lundgren, Phylicia Rashad, James Marsden, Danny Glover, Freddie Highmore, Julia Ormond, Mike Tyson, and Jeff Goldblum are all joining in the fun of this HBO comedy.

‘Tour de Pharmacy': Andy Samberg’s HBO Cycling Spoof Promises Medium Stakes in New Trailer
HBO has released a new trailer for Tour de Pharmacy, their latest sports mockumentary from the team behind the hilarious tennis comedy 7 Days in Hell. The film spoofs the doping scandals that have plagued professional biking over the years with a wild ensemble cast. Andy Samberg stars alongside Orlando Bloom, Daveed Diggs, John Cena, Dolph Lundgren, Phylicia Rashad, James Marsden, Danny Glover, Freddie Highmore, Julia Ormond, Mike Tyson, the scene-stealer of this particular trailer, Jeff Goldblum, and plenty of other oddball cameos. The film reunites Samberg with writer Murray Miller, and director Jake Szymanski, so I'm hoping …...

The Trailer For The Andy Samberg HBO Mockumentary Tour De Pharmacy Looks Hilarious
I am a huge fan of Mockumentaries. Some of my favorite filmmakers are well known for starting their careers as Mockumentary directors. Now HBO is making a habit of creating their own series of them.

A couple years ago, HBO produced a Tennis Mockumentary called 7 Days in Hell starring Andy Samberg and Kit Harrington. The production was a success, so HBO is at it again with a series called Tour De Pharmacy parodying the Tour de France that takes place and the doping that often takes place.

In 1982, during a dark and fictitious time in cycling history, the sport’s most venerable, time-honored race was marred by the doping of virtually all of its competitors. Riddled with nefarious characters, that year’s competition was a hornet’s nest of moral depravity. Through the perspective of five riders, Tour De Pharmacy gives an inside look into the grim realities of the...

Warning: The following contains spoilers for Sunday’s heart-shredding episode of The Leftovers. If you want to be surprised, watch first, read later.

We should have known. There was too much talk about the most elegant way to kill oneself in Sunday’s beautiful episode of The Leftovers for everybody to survive the hour. Yet, maybe because we so fervently hope for the best for these characters, the suicide still came as a heart-tearing surprise. Who made their final exit on the anniversary of the Sudden Departure? ‘The Leftovers’: Amy Brenneman on The Shocking Ending to Episode 6 and Laurie’s Powerful Change of Plans
Justin Theroux in The Leftovers (2014)
[Editor’s Note: The following interview has spoilers for “The Leftovers” Season 3 Episode 6 “Certified.”]

Like everyone else, the first thing Amy Brenneman wanted to know after reading the script for Episode 6, “Certified,” was, “Did Laurie kill herself?”

So she asked Damon Lindelof.

“I needed to get from Damon what Laurie’s intention was at that moment,” Brenneman said in a recent interview. “And he clarified, ‘She does intend to kill herself.'”

That moment capped an emotionally devastating episode of “The Leftovers,” and even though every hour of the HBO drama carries soul-shattering power to one degree or another, the latest Laurie-centric hour started with a suicide attempt — set before the events of Season 1 — and ended with another. In between, Nora (Carrie Coon) made a choice that could be seen as suicidal, and the opening credits song was “1-800 Suicide” by Gravediggaz.

So, it was an especially tough hour.

Teaser Trailer for HBO's Film 'Tour De Pharmacy' with Andy Samberg
"Nearly every rider was on drugs!" Another hilarious new sports mockumentary from HBO. The first teaser trailer has debuted for Tour De Pharmacy, an amusing documentary set in the early 1980s about the "dark and fictitious time in cycling history". Directed by the same filmmaker who brought us HBO's sports comedy 7 Days in Hell, he reteams with Andy Samberg to make fun of doping in cycling. The film focuses on five cyclists in 1982 as they dealt with nearly every athlete doping during the cycling competitions. Aside from Samberg, the full cast includes John Cena, Freddie Highmore, Daveed Diggs, Orlando Bloom, and a whole bunch of others. I'm not even sure if all the names they flash in this teaser are even in the film? Plus there's an appearance by Lance Armstrong, a smart move to get him to make fun of doping, too. Enjoy. Here's the teaser trailer for Jake Szymanski...

‘Tour De Pharmacy’ Trailer: Andy Samberg’s Sports Mockumentary Spoofs Doping in Cycling
Andy Samberg
Back in 2015, HBO debuted a sports mockumentary called 7 Days in Hell that chronicled fictional tennis players Aaron Williams (Andy Samberg) and Charles Poole (Kit Harington) who played a match to end all tennis matches: a seven-day, five-set marathon that took everything out of them. It was a hilarious 45-minute foray into tennis presented […]
