Suzette Doctolero did an outstanding job with this show a she stepped in again as captain of the ship in this remake version. However, I'm not sure if the producers truly understand the meaning of a "REQUEL." In a proper requel, the original cast returns to reprise their roles while new actors take on key characters in the sequels. But in this case, it feels more like a remake alone with an update. I tried binge-watching it, but all the Sang'gres have been recast! So yeah, it's not a requel, it's a "REMAKE"!
Doctolero's writing was on point, but as a devoted fan of the 2005 version, I can't help but draw comparisons. Yes, this adaptation boasts a fresh take, impressive level-up special effects, high TV ratings, and strong performances from the cast. However, for me, the original actors remain unmatched. Marian Rivera was phenomenal as Ynang Reyna she surpasses Dawn Zulueta indeed, although while Glaiza De Castro delivered a solid performance as Pirena, Sunshine Dizon will always be the definitive Pirena for me. The same goes for Diana Zubiri as Danaya, Karylle as Alena, Iza as Amihan and Jennylyn Mercado as Lira, yes Quintos is charming, but there's something about Mercado's portrayal that makes her the true Mila/Lira. Her comedic timing much raw!
Overall, while this version is undeniably well-made, I just can't help but compare. The 2005 version will always be my all-time favorite! Somehow I can't wait for the upcoming spin-off.
