Many think of manga as action-packed stories full of fighting. While this may be true for some series, there are many manga that prefer to let their words fight for them. Whether this is a murder mystery or a simple slice of life, sometimes talking is all these characters need to get their point across.
These series may still have some sort of action, regardless of whether it's slapstick humor or actual danger. They worry less about packing a literal punch and focus more about making an impact with words. It's a small and simple change, but when it comes to some stories, it's more than enough to give such manga a powerful and gripping edge that allows it to stand out among its action-packed peers.

Family Guy returns to Fox on Sunday (8/7c) with a Top Gun parody, complete with an oiled-up reenactment of the movie’s iconic volleyball scene — and that’s just the tip of Season 23’s homoerotic iceberg.
Another particularly gay episode sends Peter and his friends on a dangerous sailing expedition, only for them to get shipwrecked on Fire Island. Lois annoys Peter before the trip, prompting him to wish he could live in a world of only men — and his wish is granted.

Spoiler Alert: Details follow for Season 13, Episode 1 of “The Masked Singer,” “Lucky Season 13,” which aired February 12 on Fox.
Cedric the Entertainer got that name for a reason: He’s more than a comedian and actor. In college, Cedric was in singing groups, crooning harmonies with others. “And when I started to perform, I would sing a lot in my shows, adding these characters and jokes with a lot of vocalization to them,” he told Variety.
And even now, in his Las Vegas show with Toni Braxton, Cedric mostly does standup but does bust out a Nat King Cole number. So that’s why he decided to give “The Masked Singer” a try. On Wednesday’s Season 13 premiere, Cedric the Entertainer was the first celebrity to be unmasked, as the Honey Pot.
For Honey Pot, Ken Jeong got it right with Cedric the Entertainer, and Jenny McCarthy-Wahlberg agreed. Robin Thicke thought it was Martin Lawrence.

The Gorge director Scott Derrickson opened up about his newest sci-fi action horror movie, which will feature Golden Globe winner Anya Taylor-Joy as an elite sniper tasked with guarding the gateway to hell. This marks Derrickson’s first high-profile action movie in a while, after directing Doctor Strange in 2016.
In an interview with GamesRadar+, Derrickson confirmed that he was inspired by several popular horror video games like Silent Hill and Until Dawn, during the development and production of The Gorge. "I love those games, and I do think that gaming has sort of set the bar for gun-play action, especially if you're really with a single character or two characters, you kind of can't beat it," he shared. "I think that the challenge of the movie was not letting it fall into just the straight, chaotic stimulus of gaming-type action. The challenge was to have that kind of stimulus and power and really utilize that.

Gold Derby’s top news stories for Jan. 29, 2025 Lady Gaga opens up about Joker: Folie à Deux bombing
While promoting her newest album Mayhem, which drops on March 7, Lady Gaga spoke with Elle about Joker: Folie à Deux being a flop at the box office and with critics. “People just sometimes don’t like some things,” she said. “It’s that simple. And I think to be an artist, you have to be willing for people to sometimes not like it. And you keep going even if something didn’t connect in the way that you intended.” Speaking about her fear of failure, she added, “When that makes its way into your life, that can be hard to get control of. It’s part of the mayhem.” While the Joker sequel was snubbed at the Oscars, it did pick up a leading six Razzie Award nominations. But, don’t forget:...

Bening will play Priscilla, who in the novel is a thief and a thorn in Lucky’s side.
Apple TV+ ordered the series in December from creator Jonathan Tropper (See, the forthcoming Your Friends & Neighbors) and Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine (the novel was a Reese’s Book Club selection). Apple Studios is producing.

Lucky is the son of General Hospital royalty Luke and Laura. He was away from Port Charles for years and fans have been hoping for his return home. It finally happened and…nothing.
He’s Baaack!!
Lucky (Jonathan Jackson) came to Port Charles as a kid and grew up in front of our eyes. He had an adventurous childhood with Luke (Anthony Geary) and Laura (Genie Francis) as parents. Young Lucky had one of Gh’s best teen love stories with Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst), became close with his brother Nikolas (then Tyler Christopher), and was, of course, held hostage by the evil Helena Cassadine (Constance Towers). As he got older, he became a police officer, married Liz more than once, suffered from a drug problem, and had an affair with Maxie (Kirsten Storms).
Lucky left Port Charles in 2011 and briefly returned in 2015. He has been away since then doing volunteer work in Africa.

David Lynch is gone, and I'm not handling it well. Lynch was the very definition of a singular artist — there will never be anyone else like him. For over 50 years, Lynch was a filmmaker who almost never compromised, making unique, challenging, mind-blowing art on his own terms. We were immensely lucky to have him, and we are worse off without him. Perhaps we all should've known this was coming — death eventually comes for us all, and last year, word broke that Lynch's health had deteriorated due to emphysema (a fact Lynch confirmed on Twitter/X). And yet, a world without David Lynch feels almost cosmically wrong. I'm sure I wasn't alone in thinking that despite poor health, Lynch would somehow keep on going, and somehow make another movie or TV show again. Just one more.
In addition to his unique directing career, Lynch would sometimes act. Not only did appear...

Steven Spielberg, Nicolas Cage, and Kyle MacLachlan are among the prominent figures paying tribute to David Lynch, whose death was announced Thursday.
“I loved David’s films. Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive, and Elephant Man defined him as a singular, visionary dreamer who directed films that felt handmade,” Spielberg said in a statement. “I got to know David when he played John Ford in The Fabelmans. Here was one of my heroes — David Lynch playing one of my heroes. It was surreal and seemed like a scene out of one of David’s own movies. The world is going to miss such an original and unique voice. His films have already stood the test of time, and they always will.”

While the late David Lynch made an inimitable and indelible mark on cinema from the director’s chair, his final big-screen contribution came in front of the camera with an unforgettable cameo in The Fabelmans.
In Steven Spielberg’s 2022 semi-autobiographical film, Lynch appears toward the end of the movie as another legendary filmmaker, John Ford, who is visited by an aspiring young filmmaker.
While just a cameo, Lynch-as-Ford steals every second of the scene and distills the entire art of filmmaking with one piece of advice: “When the horizons at the bottom,...

The Queen's Gambit changed not only television but also the world of chess. The miniseries is one of the most acclaimed in Netflix history and hit at the perfect time, captivating audiences who were isolating during the Covid-19 pandemic, and increasing popularity in the game. The series centers around Beth Harmon (Anya Taylor-Joy), a young woman who is a chess prodigy in the 1950s and 1960s. At the time, women were not respected in the sport, but Harmon rose up to the rank of master, despite her unstable upbringing and struggles with substance abuse.
Above all, The Queen's Gambit is enthralling, effectively showcasing both the complexities and sophistication that goes into the game without alienating viewers. Since its release in 2020, The Queen's Gambit has been regarded as a feminist masterpiece as it centers on a woman, which is seldom seen in sports and mind games, especially chess. This article contains mentions of murder, sexual crimes, and near-death experiences. It also contains Spoilers for Criminal Minds.
Criminal Minds is renowned as one of the greatest entries in the crime procedural genre, but arguably the best part of each episode was Penelope Garcia (Kirsten Vangsness) and her sharp dialogue. The FBI technical analyst was the quintessential quirky character that added an air of levity and charm to even the most gruesome investigations. Even as the Behavioral Analysis Unit (Bau) encountered the most disturbing unsubs in Criminal Minds, Garcia was always prepared with a clever play on words or affectionate monikers for her coworkers.
Vangsness portrayed the character throughout all 15 seasons of Criminal Minds, with Penelope only absent from a single episode in the pilot season— even then she was still mentioned, a testament to how vital her presence in the series was from the start. On the season premiere of RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 17, the 14 new queens entered the Werk Room together, but host RuPaul Charles had them divide themselves into two groups of seven for a split premiere of talent show performances in “Drag Queens Got Talent.” Performing in the first week were Acacia Forgot, Arrietty, Jewels Sparkles, Joella, Lucky Starzzz, Lydia B Kollins, and Suzie Toot.
Instead of RuPaul, Michelle Visage, Carson Kressley, and special guest judge Katy Perry scoring the queens, the seven girls that didn’t perform decided the tops from the bottoms via the Rate-a-Queen twist. By their judgment, Jewels and Suzie were the top two and Acacia was the bottom (and she’s positioned to lip sync for her life in Episode 2 because of it).

General Hospital spoilers tease that Elizabeth Webber (Rebecca Herbst) has found herself under investigation by the powers that be at General Hospital after two recent suspicious deaths happened on her watch.
As viewers know, Sam McCall (Kelly Monaco) died from an overdose of digitalis while recovering from the transplant surgery she had. Digitalis wasn’t on any of Sam’s medication lists so the hospital is treating it so far like a medication error.

Stars: Bari Kang, Olivia Kang, Douglas Stirling, Patrick Michael Valley, Ximena Uribe, Mia Ventura Lucas | Written and Directed by Bari Kang
Known for his crime thrillers Lucky and The Scrapper, writer/director Bari Kang makes the transition to horror with his latest film, Itch!, which had its World Premiere at Dances With Films. It’s the second film from the festival I’ve reviewed, and like Bleeding, it looks at a supernatural creature, in this case zombies, from a different perspective and with an emphasis on the psychological as well as the physical risks of dealing with them.
Jay (Bari Kang) recently lost his wife, something their young daughter Olivia (Olivia Kang) can’t seem to accept, refusing to speak and writing notes asking to visit her mother. That, and a growing pile of past due medical bills, have him preoccupied to the point he’s not paying attention to...

The spice must flow, and so with it goes Anya Taylor-Joy, star of this year's Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and the upcoming AppleTV+ original film The Gorge. Earlier this year, Taylor-Joy made an appearance in Dune: Part Two as Alia Atreides, the younger sister of Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides, who appears to her brother during a Water of Life-induced vision. While brief, the cameo is significant, as Alia plays an important role in Dune Messiah, the next book in the series and the basis for the forthcoming third film in Denis Villeneuve's trilogy.
So, just how big of a role will Taylor-Joy play? While remaining fairly tight-lipped overall, the actress herself did confirm that she will be a part of Villeneuve's upcoming film. In a conversation with Collider, Taylor-Joy said:
"Yeah, the film is being made, and I am so thrilled to be a part of it.
