Amazon Studios has ordered a YA pilot based on the Harlan Coben novel “Shelter,” Variety has learned exclusively.
Shelter” is the first novel in Coben’s Mickey Bolitar book series. MGM has acquired the rights to all the other books in the Mickey Bolitar series as well. According to an individual with knowledge of the project, should “Shelter” get ordered to series, it could go either to Amazon Prime Video or to IMDb TV. The pilot will begin filming this summer.
In “Shelter,” Bolitar witnesses his father’s death and sends his mom to rehab. He is forced to live with his estranged aunt and switch high schools. Fortunately, he’s met a great girl, Ashley, and it seems like things might finally be improving. But then Ashley vanishes. Mickey follows Ashley’s trail into a seedy underworld that reveals that Ashley isn’t who she claimed to be. And neither was Mickey’s father.

Several protests have been filed challenging the validity of SAG-AFTRA’s recent presidential election, in which incumbent Gabrielle Carteris handily defeated opponents including runners-up Matthew Modine and Jane Austin.
One of the challenges, filed Tuesday by Brian Hamilton, a founder of Membership First, claims that Fox’s current series BH90210 was “a not-so-subtle national commercial” for Carteris’ re-election campaign. The series, which premiered August 7 – nine days after election ballots were mailed to union members – is a reboot of the original Beverly Hills, 90210 featuring cast members, now all grown up, playing fictionalized versions of their real-life selves struggling to get the reboot produced.
The election challenge notes that Carteris, one of the show’s executive producers, plays the “hard-working and concerned” president of the fictionalized “Actors Guild of America.” She and the other leading characters all go by their real-life first names – not the names of the characters they played in the original show.

In Anna Odell’s much-anticipated ”X&Y,” which world premieres as the opening film at the Stockholm Film Festival, the director also plays the leading role alongside Mikael Persbrandt, one of Sweden’s most renowned actors. Odell spoke to Variety about the film.
Odell is one of Sweden’s best-known contemporary artists and, since her directorial feature debut – “The Reunion” in 2013 – also a sought after name in Swedish cinema. The film won the top prize in Critics’ Week at the Venice Film Festival, and two Guldbagge Awards, Sweden’s top movie honor, for film and screenplay. In “The Reunion,” Odell drew inspiration from her own life as someone with mental health issues, in order to raise questions about bullying, school hierarchies and power structures in society.
In “X&Y” Odell and Persbrandt play different versions of themselves, together with six alter egos – all played by well-known Swedish and Danish actors, among them Sophie Gråbøl,...

Before Yorgos Lanthimos’ “The Favourite” – the acclaimed period-piece centering on the rivalry of two female courtiers, vying for the attention of England’s queen – closes the Stockholm Intl. Film Festival on Nov. 18, the event will have offered its audience 150 films, 39% of which are directed by women, a higher percentage than most international festivals.
The festival opens on Nov. 7 with the world premiere of Anna Odell’s “X&Y,” a film that playfully explores notions of gender identity. It is highly anticipated after the success of the director’s debut, “The Reunion,” which won the Fipresci Prize at the Venice Film Festival, and the best film and script awards at the Guldbagges, Sweden’s top movie contest.
“X&Y” is one of 22 titles competing for the Bronze Horse, the fest’s top prize, restricted to directors with no more than three films. Ten of these are helmed by women, among which are Nadine Labaki’s “Capernaum,...

LevelK has acquired international sales rights to Swedish dance drama “Feel the Beat,” which marks the feature debut of actor-turned-director Rikard Svensson (“The Reunion”).
A romantic journey through Stockholm’s swing dance world in the 1930s, “Feel the Beat” revolves around Adam, who decides to learn how to dance in order to feel closer to his wife, who is in a coma following a car accident. Adam joins the Lindy Hop dance community, but finds out that his wife has been unfaithful all along.
“As in a contemporary saga, dream sequences full of dancing are created with a particular lust, that leads the minds to movies from the 1930s and 1940s, the time when Lindy Hop and other swing forms were created,” said Svensson, who also stars in “Feel the Beat” and produced it with Annette Stavenow Eriksson for Golden Road Pictures.
Anna Sise, Hilderun Gorpe, and Magnus Krepper complete the cast.
