Emily Mortimer and Alessandro Nivola’s Children Cast in Noah Baumbach’s White Noise
It’s safe to say Film and Book Twitter erupted with the news that Noah Baumbach’s next film would be an adaptation of Don DeLillo’s seminal novel White Noise. With Adam Driver set to star alongside Greta Gerwig, marking what will be her first on-screen role in six years, more of the cast has been unveiled ahead of a summer shoot––and it’s going to be a family affair.

Emily Mortimer and Alessandro Nivola’s children, the 11-year-old May and 17-year-old Sam, have joined the ensemble, as revealed in this month’s Bazaar UK. A campus satire / oddball marriage comedy / horror story about industrialization, White Noise concerns Jack Gladney (Driver), professor of Hitler studies at the university referred to only as (again: campus satire) The-College-on-the-Hill. His life as teacher of Hitler, husband to Babette (Gerwig), and father to four children / stepchildren is torn asunder by “the Airborne Toxic Event,...

I did a double take when I saw the headline myself. Despite only launching a week ago, a not inconsiderable number of titles will be leaving HBO Max at the end of June. Veteran German Producer Thomas Zickler Dies at 55
Til Schweiger
Thomas “Tom” Zickler, one of Germany’s most successful producers, died Monday following a short illness. He was 55.

Zickler worked with actor-director Til Schweiger on some of Germany’s most successful films of the past two decades. Overseeing production at Barefoot Films and Mr. Brown Entertainment, companies he ran with Schweiger, Zickler produced such hits as 1997’s “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door,” 2010’s “Friendship!” and 2014’s “Head Full of Honey.”

In 2017 he teamed up with Christoph Fisser, vice president and COO of Studio Babelsberg, to launch a new shingle, Traumfabrik. Zickler most recently produced a movie of the same title, “Traumfabrik,” a period-piece love letter to East Germany’s famed Defa film studios, in Potsdam, which became Studio Babelsberg.

The new shingle marked a return to his professional roots. Zickler began his film career at Defa, in what was then East Germany, in 1986, three years before German reunification led to the privatization of the studio.

Shooting wraps on Til Schweiger’s Class Reunion 2.0 - The Wedding - Production – Germany
The German star’s new directorial effort is the sequel to Class Reunion 1.0. Best known to international audiences for playing Sergeant Hugo Stiglitz in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, German actor-filmmaker Til Schweiger, who in his native country enjoys superstardom status, finished shooting his new directorial effort last week. Entitled Class Reunion 2.0 - The Wedding, the new comedy is a sequel to his movie Class Reunion 1.0 - The Incredible Journey of the Silver Backs, which attracted more than 1.1 million viewers in 2018. As a reminder, Schweiger also directed last year’s box-office flop Head Full of Honey, an English-language remake of his German-language film of the same name from 2014. Class Reunion 2.0 will follow the main characters from Class Reunion 1.0 as they face a series of new challenges. Shortly after the class reunion, the lives of Thomas (Til Schweiger himself), Nils (Samuel Finzi) and Andreas (Milan Peschel),...

German box office on the rebound in the first half of 2019
Hero Fiennes Tiffin and Josephine Langford in After - Chapitre 1 (2019)
Constantins’s Us teen drama ‘After Passion’ was a surprise hit with young female audiences.

Cinema-going in Germany saw a slight year-on-year recovery in box-office takings and admissions for the first half of 2019 with admissions rising by 6% and ticket revenues by 5.6%, according to provisional figures collated by ComScore.

In the same period in 2018 German exhibitors had been faced with an almost 17% year-on-year drop in box office and admissions, and 2018 had ended with overall attendance sliding by 13.9% to 105.5 million admissions, the lowest level since German reunification in 1990. Tom Zickler Pays Tribute to Defa with ‘Traumfabrik’
“Traumfabrik” marks the return of one of Germany’s most successful producers back onto the film stage in more ways than one.

A period-piece love letter to East Germany’s famed Defa film studios, now known as Studio Babelsberg, “Traumfabrik” is a romantic drama set in 1961 that follows a young studio extra’s ambitious efforts to reunite with the French girl he loves after being separated by the construction of the Berlin Wall.

It’s also the name of a new Studio Babelsberg shingle headed by veteran producer Tom Zickler and Christoph Fisser, Studio Babelsberg vice president and COO.

Zickler launched the joint venture in 2017 after nearly 20 years of working with actor-director Til Schweiger on some of Germany’s most successful films of the past two decades. Overseeing production at Barefoot Films and Mr. Brown Entertainment, Zickler produced such hits as 1997’s “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door”; 2010’s “Friendship!” and 2014’s “Head Full of Honey.

Berlin, I Love You (2019)
‘Berlin, I Love You’ Film Review: Latest City-Based Anthology Is a Deutsch Dud
Berlin, I Love You (2019)
The juxtaposition of moments in time, such as one person experiencing immense joy and another hitting rock bottom, or someone dying while someone else is being born, has always been an intriguing concept in film. But there’s a certain finesse that goes into making each separate vignette engaging — and in some cases, even urgent — so that these slivers of tales resonate with the audience. Unfortunately, “Berlin, I Love You” lacks that essential finesse.

This fourth installment of the “Cities of Love” franchise centers on Berlin and, like the other segments, tells ten not-so-interwoven stories that illuminate various themes including love and loss. There’s the woman (Keira Knightley) who takes in an abandoned Arabic child, much to the chagrin of her disapproving mother (Helen Mirren). There’s also the Hollywood actor (Luke Wilson) grappling with his stagnant career and looking for something, or someone, who can exhilarate him once again.

Rachel Weisz, Emma Stone, and Olivia Colman in La Favorite (2018)
‘The Favourite’ and ‘Roma’ Continue to Pull Arthouse Audiences
Rachel Weisz, Emma Stone, and Olivia Colman in La Favorite (2018)
More significant titles than usual opened this week, but many of them did not report their box office. The post-Thanksgiving date is always risky for new specialty entries as maintaining momentum through Christmas is a challenge.

Steady as they go are last week’s top openers, all well-reviewed Oscar contenders. “The Favourite” (Fox Searchlight), “Roma” (Netflix), and “Shoplifters” (Magnolia) all had strong second-week expansions.

Many films at this time of year open for one week for awards qualification, then widen early next year. This year includes two films by previous Oscar winners — Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck’s “Never Look Away” (Sony Pictures Classics) and Asghar Farhadi’s “Everybody Knows” (Focus). Also debuting with no grosses revealed were the documentary “Bathtubs Over Broadway” (Focus) as well as two new Netflix titles, Andy Serkis’ “Mowgli” and the Cannes prize-winner “Happy As Lazzaro.”

And Warner Bros. got as strong a theater placement as...

‘The Mandalorian’ Adds Nick Nolte To Cast
Nick Nolte
Nick Nolte has joined the cast of The Mandalorian, one of two Star Wars original series in the works at Disney’s ambitious Disney+ streaming service. He joins Pedro Pascal and Gina Carano in the cast of the Lucasfilm-produced series based on the film franchise’s mythology.

Pascal plays a character who hails from the planet Mandalore, which Star Wars fans know as the home world of the notorious bounty hunter Boba Fett and Jango Fett. Both Nolte and Carano’s role are under wraps. Executive producer Jon Favreau has said the series set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order.

Dave Filoni (Star Wars: The Clone Wars) is directing the first episode; also on board to direct are Taika Waititi, Rick Famuyiwa, Deborah Chow and Bryce Dallas Howard.

Disney is also mounting a second Disney+ original series based on Rogue One: A Star Wars Story...

Orion Unleashes ‘Anna And The Apocalypse’; Colin Firth Sets Sail In ‘The Mercy’ – Specialty B.O. Preview
Ella Hunt in Anna et l'Apocalypse (2017)
Following last weekend’s big roll out of The Favourite from Fox Searchlight, this weekend will likely see a pause for awards contenders making splashy Specialty box office numbers. Orion Pictures is giving a limited start to comedy-horror-musical Anna And the Apocalypse, starring Ella Hunt and Malcom Cumming. Timed to the holiday season, the title fits the company’s strategy of releasing films that target specific audiences. Screen Media, meanwhile, has two very different features heading out, though both will have one-time event screenings around the country (on different dates) in addition to specific targeted regular runs. James Marsh’s The Mercy starring Colin Firth and Rachel Weisz opens Village East in New York through the distributor, while animated feature Elliot: The Littlest Reindeer will have regular engagements starting in New York and L.A. Friday in a day and date release in addition to event screenings in over 100 cities.

Following last weekend's monster performance, led by Disney's Ralph Breaks the Internet and MGM's Creed II, this weekend sees just one new wide release in Screen Gems's latest horror The Possession of Hannah Grace, which means the story will remain with last weekend's top titles as 2018 continues its torrid pace. After delivering the second largest five-day Thanksgiving weekend opening ever, Disney's Ralph Breaks the Internet is looking at a second weekend at #1 and a domestic gross that should finish at or near $120 million come end of day Sunday. Right now we're expecting a second weekend drop right around -54% for a sophomore frame totaling $26 million or so. MGM's Creed II could face some competition for second in Universal and Illumination's The Grinch, but we're expecting it to edge out the animated title with a drop right around -50% for an $18 million second weekend...

Nick Nolte plays a man by the name of Amadeus who is suffering from Alzheimer’s and his granddaughter Matilda (Sophie Lane Nolte) tries to help him “navigate his forgetfulness, and ends up going on a remarkable adventure with him.”

Head Full of Honey was directed by German actor-turned-filmmaker Til Schweiger and it seriously looks like a fantastic film.
