Kim Kardashian and North West in L'Incroyable Famille Kardashian (2007)
Yes, North West Is Already Toting a $10,000 Birkin Bag at Age Six
Kim Kardashian and North West in L'Incroyable Famille Kardashian (2007)
North West is proving designer goods aren't just for grownups. On Sunday night, the 6-year-old got dressed to the nines for a viewing of her dad, Kanye West's, new opera Mary at the Lincoln Center in New York City. Like mom Kim Kardashian, North went for an elegant yet-understated look comprised of Skims' cozy collection in all-white, which she paired with white boots, a pearl choker and a $10,000 Hermes Birkin. She gave the classy ensemble a modern twist by wearing her long locks in a space bun style. Clearly, no expense was spared for the premiere of her dad's opera. Just her Skims cozy collection look cost at least $268, not considering the cost of making it properly sized for a...

David Cronenberg
‘Rabid’: Film Review
David Cronenberg
The most uneven of David Cronenberg’s early commercial horror features, the 1977 “Rabid,” was nonetheless probably the biggest success among them, in large part due to the novelty value of seeing “Behind the Green Door” porn superstar and erstwhile Ivory Snow detergent-box model Marilyn Chambers in a lurid mainstream vehicle. It’s also the one ripest for remake, if only because his just-prior “Shivers” aka “They Came from Within” and ensuing “The Brood” should be left alone — largely reviled upon release, they’re now rightly considered genre classics. Lacking their outrageous ideas and cumulative narrative momentum despite some striking elements, “Rabid” nonetheless has a strong-enough basic concept to warrant revisiting.

In theory, “twisted twins” Jen and Sylvia Soska are fair candidates for that job: Like Cronenberg, they’re Canadian, attracted to body-horror, and have cut their own path from micro-budget projects toward the mainstream. They also claim they dislike remakes as a rule,...

Mary Kay Place at an event for Big Love (2006)
Mary Kay Place (‘Diane’) could finally catch up with her ‘Big Chill’ pals this awards season with an Oscar bid
Mary Kay Place at an event for Big Love (2006)
They say good things come to those who wait. We might be able to slot actress Mary Kay Place in that description, thanks to some surprising awards season attention from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association for her heartfelt performance in “Diane” as a deeply caring retired widow who can’t forgive herself for her past choices no matter how many casseroles she takes to those less fortunate than her.

The wintry working-class drama, a throwback to a time when cinema celebrated relatable yet flawed characters, premiered at the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival — where it won three honors including Best Narrative Feature. Distributed by IFC, it opened without much fanfare in late March while managing to achieve a 93% positive score on Rotten Tomatoes. “Diane” is currently available for viewing on Hulu.

Perhaps most surprising for those who can recall Place’s breakout Emmy-winning role as country singer Loretta Haggers in Norman Lear...

Coco Is Leaving Netflix, but It Won't Be Long Before You Can Stream It on Disney+
Way back when, Disney had "the vault," where they took movies out of home-video circulation to increase the demand for VHS tapes and DVD/Blu-rays. But now, Disney programming is widely available to stream, especially since Disney+ was introduced on Nov. 12. You can even stream the Pixar movies The Incredibles 2 and Coco from Netflix, but unfortunately, the latter won't be available through the streaming service for much longer. The incredibly charming animated film, which came out in 2017, is about an aspiring young musician named Miguel in rural Mexico who finds himself in the Land of the Dead after his grandmother Mama Coco's passing, where he embarks on a journey to learn about his rich family history. If you want to watch it on Netflix, you'll have to do it fast, because it's leaving on Nov. 29.

‘Mary’ Film Review: Gary Oldman’s Haunted-Boat Tale Is Neither Sea- Nor Scare-Worthy
With the young cast of "American Horror Story: Hotel" Episode 505 "Room Service"
You won’t find a horror movie with more barnacles on it this year than Michael Goi’s “Mary,” but that would be true even if this nautical nightmare was seaworthy. The supernatural thriller “Mary” takes place almost entirely on a haunted boat, and those arthropods make a cameo appearance that’s only slightly more memorable than anything Oscar-winner Gary Oldman is doing above the waterline.

Oldman stars as David, a fisherman who’s been working on other people’s boats his whole life and dreams of owning his own boat. His wife Sarah (Emily Mortimer) sends him a picture of a boat she found at auction, but when he gets there he only has eyes for a derelict fixer-upper named “Mary,” the same name as their youngest daughter.

It’s fate, David argues. It’s a money pit, Sarah counters, but she quickly defers to her husband’s poorer judgment.

Guillermo del Toro’s Nightmare Alley Cast and Details
David Crow Joseph Baxter Nov 21, 2019

Guillermo del Toro's developing movie, Nightmare Alley, has already added stars Cate Blanchett and Bradley Cooper.

Nightmare Alley is a developing thriller from Guillermo del Toro that will serve as a film follow-up from the auteur of abstract after his monumental achievement, the 2018 Best Director Oscar win for The Shape of Water. Auspiciously, names like Bradley Cooper and Cate Blanchett are already attached to the picture.

Fox Searchlight secured the rights to Nightmare Alley, a remake of sorts of the 1947 20th Century Fox film of the same name. In that original movie, Tyrone Power played a cunning con man who becomes partners with a psychiatrist of equal moral malleability, as played by Joan Blondell. Together they passed off Power’s Stanton as a mentalist of dubious ability, which led to plenty of money until they start trying to con each other. That film was...

Rachel Weisz, Emma Stone, and Olivia Colman in La Favorite (2018)
10 Takeaways From the 2019 BAFTA Nominations
Rachel Weisz, Emma Stone, and Olivia Colman in La Favorite (2018)
“The Favourite” lived up to its name with the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, which graced the homegrown period drama with a commanding 12 film award nominations Wednesday. But Bradley Cooper and Alfonso Cuaron made history, Glenn Close gained some momentum and Spike Lee got some love.

Here are 10 takeaways from this year’s nominations:

1. Give Me A Fiver: Bradley Cooper and Alfonso Cuaron both scored what appears to be a first in BAFTA history, racking up five nominations in a single year across five different disciplines. Cooper is a nominee for best director, leading actor, adapted screenplay, original music and film for “A Star Is Born.” The sudden bonanza gives him seven BAFTA nods throughout his career, tying BAFTA icon Daniel Day-Lewis, who won four trophies for acting. Cuaron nabbed noms for best film, director, original screenplay, cinematography and editing for “Roma.”

2. Close-ing In: Glenn Close’s momentum continues.

‘Mary Queen of Scots’: Could Margot Robbie’s surprise SAG nomination open the awards floodgates for historical film?
Margot Robbie
Margot Robbie (“Mary Queen of Scots”) was among the more surprising nominations last week for the Screen Actors Guild Awards, which was a big surge for her film after it had underperformed at other awards season events. Pundits had pegged Robbie and co-star Saoirse Ronan — both Oscar nominees for Best Actress just last year — as major contenders early on this season, but then another film about British royals, “The Favourite,” stole some of its thunder with critics and prognosticators. Is “Mary” once again in it to win it?

SEEwhat actresses have been nominated for playing royalty

Ahead of the film’s theatrical release on December 7, the 18th Whistler Film Festival opened with the Canadian premiere of “Mary,” which Director of Programming Paul Gratton introduced as a “feminist-revisionist” take and an “acting exercise above all.” True to its title, the film centers on Ronan as Mary Stuart, who navigates the politics...

Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali in Green Book : Sur les routes du sud (2018)
As ‘Green Book’ opens wide, will Oscar voters also go along for the ride?
Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali in Green Book : Sur les routes du sud (2018)
All the film festival buzz about “Green Book” – especially after Peter Farrelly’s fact-based, racially-charged road trip through the ‘60s-era Deep South won the coveted People’s Choice Award in Toronto this year – apparently hasn’t reached the masses just yet. Universal, which took over the title from its indie division, Focus Features, after Steven Spielberg got a gander and declared “Green Book” to be the best buddy picture since “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” took a chance by opening it in 25 theaters in 17 markets this past weekend before adding 1,000-plus more theaters this Wednesday.

The result? A somewhat underwhelming $313,00 gross with a per screen average of $12,520, while four theaters in New York and Los Angeles will averaged a somewhat better $25,000. The best news from this limited opening is that the movie earned an A+ Cinemascore from those in attendance – the Oscar-bestowed likes of “Titanic,” “The King’s Speech,...

Jennifer Esposito Joins Gary Oldman in Supernatural Thriller 'Mary'
Jennifer Esposito
Jennifer Esposito is to star alongside Gary Oldman in supernatural thriller 'Mary.'

The "NCIS" and "Blue Bloods" actress will play a character named Lydia in the independent feature, according to sources close to the production.

The cast includes Oscar-winner Oldman and Emily Mortimer, with Michael Goi ("American Horror Story") directing from a screenplay by Anthony Jaswinski ('The Shallows'). It is set for release in 2019.

The story centers on a a struggling family that buys an old ship at auction with high hopes of starting a charter business, only to discover her horrifying secrets once in isolated open waters.

Esposito, who shot her scenes for the movie earlier this year, has raised issues of discrimination in recent weeks, claiming she has been overlooked for roles because she is Italian-American.
