Dave Bautista, the performer most widely known for his role in the MCU as Drax the Destroyer, shares that he would have liked to see more of his character in the franchise. Although the MCU isn't over as a franchise, Drax's run belongs to another era that appears to be in the past. Bautista is committed to other projects today, but the actor nostalgically looks back at the role that paved a future for him in Hollywood.

What do you get when you let top-tier actors run uninhibited in a crime-ridden hotel for a succinct ninety minutes? You get an absolute blast. Hotel Artemis, a 2018 thriller that flew relatively low under the radar, is currently streaming for free, and if you missed it, you need to check it out. The film's writer/director, Drew Pearce, is best known for putting pen to paper, lending his talent for screenplays to Iron Man 3, The Fall Guy, and the Hobbs & Shaw spin-off for the Fast & Furious franchise.

Dave Bautista usually manages to draw a crowd for his movies as one of the elite group of wrestling stars to have made the move to Hollywood blockbusters. However, The Killer's Game arrived in 2024 to one of the actors' worst set of reviews, and an equally dismal box office, in recent years, but that hasn’t stopped the film from shooting to the top of the Prime Video global movie chart, even without it being available in the U.S.
Directed by J. J. Perry and written by Rand Ravich and James Coyne, Bautista’s action comedy promised to tick all the boxes that his fans have come to expect. The Killer's Game follows Bautista's hitman, Joe Flood, who orders a hit on himself after being told by a doctor he's suffering from a terminal illness. The best Sterling K. Brown movies and TV shows feature massively popular television shows and both critically acclaimed and mainstream blockbuster movies. Brown began studying early in life and ended up graduating from Stanford University with an acting degree. He studied further at New York University Tisch School of the Arts, where he graduated with a Master of Fine Arts degree. This led to his start in regional theater where he worked alongside some big names that all ended up in Hollywood.
For Brown, his entrance to Hollywood started with roles on TV shows, as he appeared in everything from ER and NYPD Blue to Third Watch and Alias. However, he really began to get noticed with recurring roles in popular TV shows like Supernatural and his breakthrough in The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story. Dave Bautista has become a well-established actor over the course of a 18 year acting career, and his chance to lead The Killer's Game turned out to be a low point in one specific area. The former wrestler got his big break by joining the Marel Cinematic Universe as Drax, and that role gave him more opportunities to join other franchises and standalone projects. The 2024 action movie represented the continued evolution of his career, as it put him back in the lead role of an action movie, one that could launch a new franchise after The Killer's Game's ending.
Bautista is no stranger to being part of franchises and projects that are successful overall. He's been in franchises - Dune, Blade Runner 2049, and Bond, and he started his own franchise with My Spy. He's also made an effort to work with Rian Johnson, M. Night Shyamalan, and other notable directors.

Professional wrestler turned actor Dave Bautista recently starred in an action comedy film called The Killer's Game, and the movie's poor reception has many wondering where the project went so wrong. The Killer's Game follows a hit man who discovers he has a terminal illness. As a result, he decides to put out a hit on himself. However, when he realizes that the hit is also targeting his ex-girlfriend, he must fight tooth and nail to save her life and perhaps even win her back. The movie was released on September 13, 2024.
Although Dave Bautista first became famous due to his wrestling career, in the last decade or so he has made a name for himself as a serious actor. Bautista's acting career began in 2006, and has since developed with roles such as Drax the Destroyer in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise and Glossu Rabban in the Dune movies.

The Killer's Game follows Joe Flood a veteran assassin who is given a terminal diagnosis by his doctor. Determined to avoid the inevitable pain he authorizes a kill order on himself. However, he soon discovers that his outcome is not nearly as tragic as he was led to believe and must try to escape his former colleagues as they attempt to kill him.
The Killer's Game is helmed by veteran stuntman turned director J.J. Perry who brings his skills to create bombastic action sequences to this unexpectedly romantic and comedic story. Based on the novel of the same name by Jay Bonansinga the screenplay was penned by Rand Ravich and James Coyne. Even with Knock at the Cabin and Guardians of the Galaxy's Dave Bautista fronting it, action outing The Killer's Game has unceremoniously bombed at the box office. Bautista is typically part of an ensemble in his movies, and The Killer's Game was never going to hold a candle to a Guardians of the Galaxy or Dune flick, which could be part of the reason why the movie has floundered. One would also be hard-pressed to name any advertising they'd seen for it prior to the week of its release.
Even with Bautista, Rebel Moon's Sofia Boutella, fellow Guardians of the Galaxy vet Pom Klementieff, Deadpool 2's Terry Crews, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings' Ben Kingsley, and superstar Ice Cube, The Killer's Game was undoubtedly the big loser of an already slow weekend at the box office. It opened in sixth place with $2.6 million at 2,623 theaters.

The Killer's Game includes a recognizable cast of characters from notable action movies around star Dave Bautista. The Guardians of the Galaxy and Marvel Cinematic Universe veteran spent years working to get the 2024 action movie off the ground. Directed by J.J. Perry, Bautista's The Killer's Game focuses on an assassin who orders a hit on himself after a terminal illness diagnosis, but he is then forced to fight for his survival after he discovers he was misdiagnosed.
From the moment the movie begins until The Killer's Game's ending, the movie is built around Bautista in the lead role and his character's new romantic relationship. Along the way, the movie introduces multiple characters from the assassin underworld that Joe Flood has been part of for 20 years. The Killer's Game cast some significant stars to play these various roles, whether they were ultimately allies or foes for Bautista's hero.

The new action-comedy movie, which also stars Sofia Boutella, Pom Klementieff, Terry Crews, Scott Adkins, and Ben Kingsley, follows a hit man (Bautista) who orders a hit on himself after receiving a terminal diagnosis, only to learn that he was misdiagnosed, at which point he is forced to fight for his life against multiple assassins. On screen, we’ve already seen Michael B. Jordan conduct an art heist of sorts – that brilliantly memorable museum scene in Black Panther, in which his Killmonger liberates artefacts shamelessly nabbed by the British during colonial rule. Now, get ready for a different kind of Jordan-pilfers-precious-art outing – the man is getting ready to step into the shoes of Steve McQueen and Pierce Brosnan, as the latest incarnation of super-smooth criminal mastermind Thomas Crown. A new take on The Thomas Crown Affair is officially on the way – with Jordan not only set to take the title role (a notion that's been hanging around in Hollywood since 2016), but also to direct.
As reported by Deadline, Jordan is lining up his second feature as director, following Creed III – and the new Thomas Crown looks set to be it. He’ll be producing via his Outline Society production banner for Amazon MGM Studios – with...

‘The Killer’s Game’ Star Sofia Boutella Talks Her Action Respite and ‘Rebel Moon’ Character’s Future
Sofia Boutella desperately needed a break from action, and J.J. Perry’s The Killer’s Game provided exactly that.
After devoting nearly the entirety of 2022 to her most physically demanding role yet as Kora/Arthelais in Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon franchise, Boutella was relieved that she didn’t have to bear the burden of being the primary action hero in Perry’s action-comedy. Instead, she was charmed by the romantic role she was offered alongside her former Hotel Artemis co-star Dave Bautista. Her Rebel Moon character also didn’t have the greatest luck in the romance department, so The Killer’s Game’s more hopeful love story likely appealed to her as well.
The Algerian actor’s physical background is still on full display in the opening sequence, as her character, Maize, is a ballet dancer who’s eying retirement when she meets Bautista’s assassin character, Joe Flood.

It wasn’t the action that piqued Dave Bautista’s interest in The Killer’s Game; it was the chance to play a proper romantic lead for the very first time. Like a lot of actors, Bautista is most intrigued by the roles that frighten him, and so the chance to play lovestruck assassin Joe Flood was something he’d been committed to intermittently since 2019. Based on The Killer’s Game novel by Jay Bonansinga, Flood is diagnosed with a neurodegenerative brain condition that leaves him with only months to live, so he takes out a contract on his own life so that the love of his life, Maize (Sofia Boutella), can collect his life insurance policy. The rub is that he was misdiagnosed by three different labs and it’s too late to cancel said contract.

After waging war with House Atreides in Dune: Part Two, Dave Bautista trades his Harkonnen armor for something more discrete as he slips into the role of a hitman on borrowed time in The Killer’s Game trailer. Lionsgate shared the first trailer, poster, and images for the upcoming action comedy from director J.J. Perry. The promo features the former wrestler-turned-Hollywood superstar as an assassin with a dry wit fighting for his life after receiving a false diagnosis from his doctor. Thinking he’s suffering from a terminal illness and only has three months to live, Bautista’s hitman, Joe Flood, must survive an onslaught of savvy killers looking to collect his head.

Gosling and Blunt's chemistry shines, but the central conceit loses steam in the second act. Leitch delivers dynamic action scenes, showcasing his talent as a renowned stuntman turned director. Aaron Taylor-Johnson nails the role of a slimy narcissistic actor, adding humor and satire to the film.
The Fall Guy revs the summer box office into high gear with a clever action-comedy that's sure to delight audiences. The effortlessly charming Ryan Gosling dons his romantic hero cape to win Emily Blunt's heart in a rugged but aw-shucks sweet fashion. They have the kind of superstar lead chemistry that studio suits drool over. Director David Leitch delivers his best film yet. He gives deserving props to "the unknown stuntman that makes Eastwood look so fine." Those memorable lyrics from the classic TV show get a blockbuster adaptation, despite an overly meta plot and enough Gmc truck product placement to stamp your forehead.

Ostensibly a big-screen reboot of the 1980s television series of the same name, “The Fall Guy” is actually director and former stunt performer David Leitch’s love letter to both his wife, producer Kelly McCormick, and the undersung art of stunt work — only not always in that order.
Working closely with screenwriter and executive producer Drew Pearce, who previously scripted his “Fast and the Furious” spinoff “Hobbs & Shaw,” Leitch creates a clearinghouse of gobsmacking stunts (some truly record-breaking) while chronicling the tumultuous relationship between veteran stunt man Colt Seavers (Ryan Gosling) and first-time director Jody Moreno (Emily Blunt). It’s quick-witted (and quick-footed) fun that bridges multiple generations of Hollywood moviemaking, melding together rom-coms and bombastic action into one blockbuster package.
Since making his screenwriting debut on Shane Black’s “Iron Man 3,” Pearce has developed an aptitude for conceiving stories that maintain a singular yet cohesive tonal balance.

Brian Tyree Henry's performances in films never fail to capture the audience's attention and steal a scene, lending charisma and skill to the overall quality of the movie. Henry's experience in theater shines through in his film roles, as he fully immerses viewers in the story of the worlds he inhabits and rarely plays the same character twice. In his choice of films, Henry seeks out the voices of new and exciting filmmakers, always looking for fresh and diverse projects that showcase his versatile range as an actor.
For some actors who had their breakout role on television, it can be hard to bridge the gap into working in film, but Brian Tyree Henry has not had that problem and has a filmography bursting with outstanding movies. Part of what makes these films stand out among others is Henry's performances, which never fail to capture the audience's attention and steal a scene.

True Detective season 4 brings back Jodie Foster in her first major role since 2018, and her presence evokes the excitement of her previous iconic detective role in The Silence of the Lambs. The inclusion of a female detective duo, with Jodie Foster as a seasoned detective and Kali Reis as a rookie, breaks gender norms in the genre and adds a refreshing dynamic to the show. The connections to the first season, with the appearance of familiar symbols and the possibility of a Rust Cohle comeback, create continuity and intrigue for fans, promising a return to the original tone and structure of the show.
True Detective season 4 is on its way, and there are several exciting things to expect from it in the meantime. True Detective's release in 2014 set the bar high for the rest of the seasons, receiving praise across the board on its way to winning five Primetime...

Whether you love or hate him, no one can deny that Zack Snyder always goes big. His director’s cut of Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice ran three hours, while his complete vision of Justice League clocked in at four. Both movies had huge, sprawling stories and big personalities and were teeming with grim visuals and special effects. Snyder is an ambitious filmmaker with a brevity problem, but overall, he makes an entertaining movie.
Snyder’s follow-up to the sprawling opus of Justice League and his zombie romp Army of the Dead is Rebel Moon. The film is described in short as an “epic space opera,” not dissimilar to the label of a certain galaxy far, far away. A Netflix production, Rebel Moon boasts an impressive ensemble cast of notable actors and actresses. It is now shaping up to be one of the biggest movies of the holiday season.

Rebel Moon star Sofia Boutella discussed her experience portraying the lead character of Kora, a former Imperium soldier who goes up against the oppressive forces of the Mother World.
In a recent interview with /Film, Boutella revealed that she definitely felt a personal connection to Kora while playing the character in Zack Snyder’s upcoming Netflix movie. She explained that growing up as an immigrant is an experience that she and Kora both share. "I think there was a lot of stuff that I could relate to, for myself," she said. "I was born in Algeria and I never — Kora is found on another planet that's not her home, she was abducted. I was not abducted, but my roots are not necessarily where I live and not where I grew up and not where I was born, and I can relate to that."

The original Max series “Full Circle” debuts on July 13. Directed by Steven Soderbergh, the new drama investigates a kidnapping gone wrong in New York, revealing the secrets and lies of multiple characters. Or as the trailer warns: “Everything is connected.” The six-episode limited series stars Zazie Beetz, Claire Danes, Jim Gaffigan, Jharrel Jerome, Timothy Olyphant, and Dennis Quaid.
Watch the “Full Circle” trailer:
The four-part documentary “Last Call: When A Serial Killer Stalked Queer New York” is set in the early 1990s as the AIDS crisis worsens. The media’s distorted coverage of the gay victims, coupled with the homophobic biases of the criminal justice system, undermine the investigation. The docuseries — which premieres on Max on July 9 — illustrates how the LGBTQ+ community fought to solve the murders and demand attention for those murdered.

He’s baaack! Zachary Quinto appeared in the first two “American Horror Story” installments as gay homeowner Chad Warwick (Season 1’s “Murder House”) and as fan-fave serial killer Bloody Face (Season 2’s “Asylum”), but then he took a nine-year hiatus before popping up last year as erotic art curator Sam (Season 11’s “NYC”). Well, “AHS” viewers won’t have to wait another nine years to see Quinto again, as he’ll return to the franchise in Season 12’s “Delicate” in a mysterious role, which brings his tally to four total characters.
Quinto confirmed the news at the Tribeca Film Festival premiere of his movie “He Went That Way.” Speaking about new “AHS” cast member Kim Kardashian, the bearded actor told reporters, “I did a cameo on this season of ‘American Horror Story’ and I got to meet her. She was so lovely and warm and, really, I don’t think she needs my advice.

From the Gang to familiar supporting players to all-new guest stars, the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia season 16 cast is full of great actors. Whereas a lot of TV shows chart the growth of their characters, the members of the Gang are still the same delusional narcissists they were back in season 1. After season 15 continued the show’s successful run, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia was renewed for season 16, as well as seasons 17 and 18, breaking its own record as the longest-running live-action sitcom in television history (via Variety).
Like season 15, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia season 16 consists of eight episodes, with such titles as “Frank vs. Russia,” “The Gang Goes Bowling,” and “Dennis Takes a Mental Health Day.” The season kicks off with a two-episode premiere promising plenty of the show’s signature sharp humor: “The Gang Inflates” and “Frank Shoots Every Member of the Gang.” From the core five...

Charlie Day is a talented guy. The man has brought the humor for years thanks to It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. And yes, Mr. Day shined in many a feature film including Fist Fight, Hotel Artemis, and the Lego Movie franchise. The actor is back, and this time he’s the writer, director, and producer of his latest, Fool’s Paradise. Taking on the insanity of Hollywood, Fool’s also features a terrific collection of talent that includes Kate Beckinsale, Ken Jeong, Jason Sudeikis, Adrien Brody, Ray Liotta, and even a few of his Sunny cast members. It’s a satire with sweetness, and it’s incredibly charming.
Recently, we spoke with Kate Beckinsale and Ken Jeong about their latest, and I even got a laugh or two out of them. The two opened up about taking on the craziness of a crazy town. They even talked about whether or...

Dave Bautista may not be in a rom-com just yet, but the action star is taking on a gritty surreal adventure story with his next film.
The “Knock at the Cabin” star teased his upcoming project with screenwriter Drew Pearce as a combination of the Safdie Brothers and Martin Scorsese sensibilities.

So it’s that, but it’s kind of an ‘After Hours’ meets ‘Uncut Gems.’ It’s quirky and funny and suspenseful and thrilling, but also a lot of heart. In case you missed the memo, Dave Bautista is leaving the Marvel Cinematic Universe behind him. Over the years since 2014's "Guardians of the Galaxy" catapulted his movie career to the next level, the world's greatest wrestler turned actor (with John Cena coming in second) has proven his dedication to the craft, collaborating with the likes of Denis Villeneuve, Sam Mendes, and Rian Johnson while also lending his talents to smaller, off-kilter projects ("Hotel Artemis") and even international genre films ("Master Z: Ip Man Legacy"). Suffice it to say, Bautista is the real deal, and he's here to stay.
With Bautista now collecting accolades for his performance in M. Night Shyamalan's "Knock at the Cabin" (which Chris Evangelista reviewed for /Film), he's already started 2023 off on the right foot. What's more, his dramatic turn in Shyamalan's thriller stands in sharp contrast to his broadly comedic work as Drax the...

Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista teases his new movie project The Cooler from the co-writer of Iron Man 3. Bautista became a star as a professional wrestler, then became a movie star thanks to his dryly funny performance as Drax the Destroyer in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy and later MCU films. But Bautista has made it clear that he’s glad to be wrapping up his time as Drax, and no longer wants to be typecast as the big, dumb, weird guy who says strange things.
It’s likely that Bautista never will fully shake off being associated with Drax the Destroyer, but it won’t be for lack of trying. In his ongoing effort to line up projects that challenge him as an actor, and help him shed the Drax image, Bautista just teased an intriguing new project that re-teams him with Hotel Artemis helmer Drew Pearce.

Of all the professional wrestlers that pivoted to a career acting in Hollywood, none have a filmography as varied, celebrated, and high-profile as Dave Bautista. Whereas many of Bautista's former pro wrestler contemporaries have since leaned into conventional action and comedy roles, Bautista has broadened his range considerably. While Bautista has certainly played characters that reflect his physical stature, he has also taken on roles that play against type in a growing number of genres, from thrillers to hard science fiction.
More than just a breadth of genres, Bautista is working with some of the most acclaimed filmmakers in the industry today, including M. Night Shyamalan, Denis Villeneuve, and Sam Mendes, each taking full advantage of Bautista's talents. A fearless actor in his own right, Bautista's performances can go from vulnerable to intimidating in an instant, as he shows increasing amounts of depth with each subsequent project. That's part...

He can be controversial. Not really for anything he has done, but if you mention the name Zack Snyder, you’re not sure how fans will react. We’ll have to see how they react to Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon. Some hated his take on the DC Universe. Others loved it, and the voices were so loud that Warner Bros. had no choice but to finish and release the SnyderCut finally. Many have applauded his update to the Romero classic Dawn Of The Dead. Purists hate that the zombies run in the film. Comic fans love his adaptation of Watchmen. Fanboys deride the film as something that should never have been made.
