Katie Lee Biegel Dishes Why Catch of the Day Is The Perfect Summer Film
Image
The Hallmark Channel hit it out of the park this year with its “Summer Nights” lineup. We loved the Providence Falls trilogy.

It’s ending with Catch of the Day, which includes the essence of summer fun — coastal living, beachy eats like lobster rolls, and reuniting with an old crush.

It’s the ultimate summer chick flick, and one of my favorite Food Network stars, Katie Lee Biegel, wrote the script and appears in the film.

(Courtney Julien/Hallmark Media)

Biegel has co-hosted The Kitchen for many years and has appeared as a frequent judge on Beat Bobby Flay.

She has written four cookbooks, and her novel, Groundswell, was also...

Currently in production, the film follows Nadene (Himadeh), a once-celebrated Syrian poet now working as a maid in New York, whose quiet life unravels when she agrees to let the FBI use her apartment window for surveillance, led by agent Emily Santiago (Martín). Daniel Kaluuya Set to Write and Direct New Spider-Punk Movie
Image
After becoming a fan-favorite variant in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, one Spider is getting ready for his solo. Per Deadline, Sony Pictures Animation is developing a new animated film centered on the hard-rocking Spider-Punk, aka Hobie Brown. Oscar winner Daniel Kaluuya, who voiced the character in Miles Morales's multiverse adventure, will be picking up the pen this time to co-write the story with Ajon Singh. It's expected that he'll also jump back into the role of Hobie, though plot details and other specifics about the project have yet to be shared.

It's unclear at this time whether the Spider-Punk movie will connect to Christopher Miller and Phil Lord's Spider-Verse in some way, or if it's meant as a standalone story pulled from the comics. Hobie was created by Dan Slott and artist Olivier Coipel as an anti-establishment, punk-rock Spider-Man hailing from a world dominated by corporations and ruled under a fascist dictatorship.

Spider-Punk Animated Feature From Daniel Kaluuya & Ajon Singh In Development At Sony
Image
Exclusive: Sony Pictures Animation is in early development on a Spider-Punk animated feature from co-writers Daniel Kaluuya (Judas and the Black Messiah) and Ajon Singh (Primetime), Deadline has learned.

Plot details are under wraps, and there are no other deals in place at this time. The natural assumption, of course, is that Kaluuya will reprise the role of Spider-Punk, which he played in 2023’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and will reprise in the upcoming Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.

Created by writer Dan Slott and artist Olivier Coipel, Spider-Punk (aka Hobie Brown) is a version of Spider-Man who leans into a more anarchistic, anti-establishment attitude than Peter Parker’s version. Residing on Earth-138, the character is fueled by his desire to help take down corrupt systems. He first appeared during a Spider-Verse crossover event, as part of 2015’s The Amazing Spider-Man #10.

Across the Spider-Verse is the second film in a trilogy...

Food Network Star Anne Burrell’s Death Ruled a Suicide
Image
Food Network chef Anne Burrell’s recent death has been ruled a suicide by the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner. Burrell, who was 55, was found to have ingested multiple substances.

After the conclusion of an investigation, the medical examiner’s office ruled the cause of death as “acute intoxication due to the combined effects of diphenhydramine, ethanol, cetirizine and amphetamine.”

Burrell’s death in her Brooklyn home, where she was discovered unresponsive, was first announced by her family on June 17. In a statement at the time, the family said: “Anne was a beloved wife, sister, daughter, stepmother and friend — her smile lit up every room she entered. Anne’s light radiated far beyond those she knew, touching millions across the world. Though she is no longer with us, her warmth, spirit and boundless love remain eternal.”

Food Stylists in the Writers’ Union? That’s a Reality in an Innovative New Labor Deal
Image
The production company behind Food Network staple The Kitchen has been cooking up something quite unusual with the writers’ union.

On Monday the Writers Guild of America East announced that its members at Garden Slate Productions, formerly called Bstv Entertainment, had unanimously ratified a first union contract with the cuisine-focused entertainment company.

The deal covers some nonfiction workers that the writers’ union has represented many times before — like producers and associate producers.

But in a move befitting a shingle that’s behind shows like Trisha’s Southern Kitchen, Big Restaurant Bet and Feasting With the Stars, the pact also covers some unprecedented roles for the WGA East, like food stylist, culinary producer and culinary assistant. (Other atypical roles that are included? Art director, art production assistant, assistant art director and prop stylist.)

The company voluntarily recognized the whole bargaining unit in 2023, but the labor agreement means that contract language for...

Garden Slate Productions Reaches First Union Contract With WGA East
Image
Staff at Garden Slate Productions, which produces Food Network’s long-running series The Kitchen, have landed their first union contract.

The company has struck a deal with the Writers Guild of America East (Wgae) that will include immediate raises for production assistants and increased health benefits for staff.

It comes more than two years after workers at the unscripted production company, which was previously known as Bstv, before rebranding as part of a deal earlier this year, unionized with the Wgae.

Earlier this year, staff at the company said that, in response to union proposals, the company “intimidated and retaliated against union-supporting workers while pushing out, demoting, and firing multiple union leaders despite their years of excellent performance and exemplary records on the job”.

But this group has now reached a three-year contract that covers many titles under production, along with rarely unionized positions such as set PAs and food stylists,...

La Cocina ‘Ciff’ Movie Review: Raúl Briones and Rooney Mara Steer Claustrophobic, Bleak Kitchen Drama
Alonso Ruizpalacios
Alonso Ruizpalacios’s “La Cocina” (English Title: The Kitchen), adapted from Arnold Wesker’s play The Kitchen, is a feverish live-wire immersion into a restaurant serving tourists at Times Square. Opening with the arrival of a young Mexican woman, Estella (Anna Diaz) seeking a cook’s job at the restaurant The Grill, there’s a note of anticipation tempered with grungy realism. But she’s not the primary character in the narrative, just an entry point. Quickly, the film swerves into one of the other cooks, Pedro (Raúl Briones), who shares a family history with Estella though initially he struggles to recall her. Their families have known each other since they were kids.

Pedro is a magnificent flirt, with an easy way of skidding around another’s sour mood by dialing up his casual humor and allure. In one of the most sexually bristling scenes, he pacifies his pregnant white American girlfriend,...

‘La Cocina’ Review: Alonso Ruizpalacios Takes a Knife to the American Dream
Image
Set at a restaurant that caters to tourists in Times Square, Alonso Ruizpalacios’s La Cocina, adapted from Arnold Wesker’s 1957 play The Kitchen, revolves around Pedro (Raúl Briones), an undocumented Mexican line cook, and Julia (Rooney Mara), a white American working front of house. When $800 goes missing from the till, triggering an investigation by restaurant management, their love story derails. Throughout, Ruizpalacios allows the Grill to be both exactly what it is—a specific workplace with its own Kitchen Confidential-style rituals and pecking order—and a microcosm of American capitalism. “American” in the broadest sense since, as Pedro reminds us, “America is not a country.”

In an important scene, the Grill’s second-generation Mexican American manager, Luis (Eduardo Olmos), is interrogating Pedro, whom he suspects of having stolen the money to pay for the abortion that Julia wants and, coincidentally, would cost $800. While the intransigent line cook sidesteps Luis...
