Auli’i Cravalho on the Experience of Pasifika Women in Hollywood: “It’s Lonely”
Image
“The reason I’m successful is because I’m passing, straight up,” said producer Naomi Scott, who is Chamorro (Indigenous people of the Mariana Islands), during the Pasifika Entertainment Advancement Komiti (Peak)’s second annual Peak Conversations panel. It was held on the first day of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month last Wednesday night.

“I’m married to a white man who’s famous. I don’t want to sugarcoat it,” added Scott, who is married to actor Adam Scott. “But now that I’m here, I have a responsibility to keep the door open.”

The experience of Pasifika women in Hollywood was at the center of the discussion in West Hollywood, created to celebrate Pacific Islander filmmaking, entertainment and community.

Scott was joined on the panel by Moana and Mean Girls star Auli’i Cravalho and RuPaul‘s Drag Race season 15 winner Sasha Colby, who are both Hawaiian. “There’s...

Sharon Stone Details Her Failed ‘Barbie’ Movie Pitch, Says Studio Execs ‘Didn’t Think Barbie Should Be Powerful’: ‘What Is Wrong With You?’
Image
Sharon Stone surprised fans in January when she revealed on Instagram that she tried and failed to pitch a “Barbie” movie in the 1990s, decades before Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie would make their own adaptation to the tune of $1.4 billion worldwide (the highest-grossing film of 2023) and eight Academy Award nominations. Stone said she got “laughed out of the studio” back then. She recently dropped some new info about her axed “Barbie” movie while visiting Dana Carvey and David Spade’s “Fly On The Wall” podcast.

“I went to the studio to try and make Barbie in the 1990s with a producer, a friend of mine, and I had the then-ceo of Mattel on my side. We got thrown out of the studio,” Stone recalled. “They were like, ‘Why would you take this American icon and try to destroy it? What is wrong with you?’ I got a lecture and an escort to the door.

Sharon Stone Pitched a ‘Barbie’ Movie in the 1990s and Got ‘Laughed Out of the Studio,’ Thanks Margot Robbie and Co. for Their ‘Courage and Endurance’
Image
Sharon Stone has revealed that she once attempted to pitch a “Barbie” movie to a Hollywood studio during the 1990s and was laughed out of the room. What a difference a couple of decades makes, as Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie’s “Barbie” opened last year and earned a staggering $1.4 billion to become the top-grossing film of 2023 and the biggest earner in Warner Bros.’ studio history.

“I was laughed out [of] the studio when I came [with] the Barbie idea in the ’90s [with] the support of the head of Barbie,” Stone wrote in a comment to America Ferrara on Instagram, where the latter shared her powerful acceptance speech from the Critics Choice Awards. “How far we’ve come. Thank you ladies for your courage and endurance.”

Ferrera is a supporting actor in “Barbie” and was honored with the SeeHer award at the Critics Choice Awards. During her speech, she paid tribute to...

Anne Hathaway’s ‘Barbie’ Movie Never Got Made. She Calls It a ‘Lucky Thing’ Because Margot Robbie’s Film ‘Was The Best Possible Version’
Image
Anne Hathaway appeared on the latest “Happy Sad Confused” podcast and called it “lucky” that her iteration of the “Barbie” movie never got off the ground considering the phenomenon that Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” became over the summer. Back in July 2017, Hathaway was announced as the star of Sony’s “Barbie” movie. Comedian Amy Schumer was originally cast, but Hathaway took over the role after Schumer departed.

Hathaway’s “Barbie” was supposed to come out in June 2018. Australian filmmaker Alethea Jones, best known for helming the comedy “Fun Mom Dinner,” was in talks to direct the film, which sources described as in the vein of “Splash,” “Enchanted” and “Big.” Schumer did a polish on the script, which followed Barbie as she get kicked out of Barbieland for not being perfect enough and lands in a real-world adventure. The project never materialized, which opened the door for Robbie...

The Boys Are Back: Gen V's Returning Cast & Character Guide
Image
The Gen V cast introduces some promising new characters to The Boys universe and brings back some iconic characters from the flagship series. Loosely inspired by the story arc “We Gotta Go Now” from Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s The Boys comics, Gen V revolves around a group of young Supes who are put through various battle royales to test their superpowers at Vought International’s Godolkin University School of Crimefighting. Originally titled The Boys Presents: Varsity, Gen V is essentially a take on The Hunger Games narrative set in a world full of superheroes.

With college-aged Supes anchoring its main cast, Gen V has the chance to make big stars out of a new generation of actors. Gen V focuses on the G-Men, Vought’s most popular superhero team, a parody of Marvel’s X-Men made up of orphans and outcasts. The series was developed by Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters,...

Robert De Niro, Val Kilmer, Al Pacino, Ted Levine, Wes Studi, Jerry Trimble, and Mykelti Williamson in Heat (1995)
‘The War With Grandpa’ Film Review: Robert De Niro Mildly Kills Time, So Audiences Can Do Likewise
Robert De Niro, Val Kilmer, Al Pacino, Ted Levine, Wes Studi, Jerry Trimble, and Mykelti Williamson in Heat (1995)
Remember, after “Heat” but before “The Irishman,” how crushingly disappointing it was to have Robert De Niro and Al Pacino re-teamed in the utterly forgettable “Righteous Kill”? “The War With Grandpa,” to be clear, is a much better movie than “Righteous Kill,” but anyone excited about a reunion of the stars of “The Deer Hunter” (De Niro and Christopher Walken) or “Mad Dog and Glory” (De Niro and Uma Thurman) should ratchet their expectations way, way down.

“The War With Grandpa” isn’t going to sully the reputation of any of these screen legends, mainly because it barely registers; it’s the sort of mildly amusing comedy that your brain begins flushing out before you even get to the closing credits.

De Niro stars as Ed, a grandfather to three kids, one of whom — Oakes Fegley (“Pete’s Dragon”) as Peter — has to surrender his room when grandpa comes to...

Bridget Everett to Star in HBO Comedy Series About Her Career
Image
HBO is setting course for Kansas with “Somebody Somewhere,” an upcoming Bridget Everett-led comedy series.

Here’s the synopsis, per HBO: For all of its vast plains and endless prairies, Kansas can feel confining for someone like Sam Miller (Everett). Inspired by the life of comedian and singer Bridget Everett, Sam is a true Kansan on the surface but beneath it all struggles to fit the hometown mold. As she grapples with loss and acceptance, singing is Sam’s saving grace and leads her on a journey to discover herself and a community of outsiders that don’t fit in but don’t give up. “Somebody Somewhere” shows finding your people, and finding your voice, is possible. Anywhere. Somewhere.

“Somebody Somewhere” marks the first series to be primarily focused on and executive produced by Everett, a cabaret performer who has appeared in films such as “Patti Cake$,” “Little Evil,...

‘Queen America’ Trailer: Catherine Zeta-Jones and Facebook are Trying Their Hardest to Make a Beauty Pageant Drama Happen
It’s been a rough year for beauty pageant stories. “Queen America,” the latest entry in the growing Facebook Watch original programming library, at least has Catherine Zeta-Jones to help guide it through.

The latest trailer for the series shows Zeta-Jones playing Oklahoma pageant whisperer Vicki Jones, who’s tasked with helping shape an unpredictable aspiring contestant Samantha (Belle Shouse) into a winner. Putting her reputation on the line, it seems like Vicki will learn plenty of lessons about image, self-worth, and good heartland values along the way.

Samantha is Vicki’s main project, but plenty of other people will enter her orbit over the course of the 10-episode season, set to premiere later this month on Facebook Watch. This trailer is a little vague who’ll be watching from the sidelines, and who’s exactly enthusiastic about having Vicki around in the first place, but there’s also the...

Ibiza review – breezy and raucous Netflix comedy is a fun night in
Gillian Jacobs heads up a strong trio of female comic actors in a knockabout trip around Europe that squeezes moments of hilarity into a barebones plot

Last year, in a belated attempt to redress the balance, a party busload of films was released that saw women drinking, partying and casual sexing in ways that have usually been reserved for their male counterparts. There was Scarlett Johansson dealing with the death of a stripper in the dark, intermittently funny Rough Night, Toni Collette and Molly Shannon leaving the kids at home in Fun Mom Dinner, the cast of Bad Moms returning with diminishing returns in A Bad Moms Christmas and Tiffany Haddish transforming into a one woman comic phenomenon in crowd-pleasing box office hit Girls Trip. The results were mixed but the message was clear: the post-Bridesmaids boom in comedies fronted by groups of very funny women was finally happening.

Heather Graham
Heather Graham is Combating Hollywood Sexism With a Racy New Romantic Comedy For Women
Heather Graham
Girl Talk is a weekly look at women in film — past, present, and future.

Three decades into her Hollywood career, Heather Graham is making some changes. The long-time actress has always mixed things up in her work. Even as a teenager, she always seemed interested in working with a wide array of directors on some very different projects, playing the object of Corey Haim’s affection in the teen comedy “License to Drive” and turning in an Indie Spirit-nominated supporting turn in Gus Van Sant’s “Drugstore Cowboy” in the space of a year. Her best-known roles also reflect that same spirit, and Graham is just as recognizable for her work in the first “Austin Powers” film as she is for her heartbreaking spin in Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Boogie Nights.”

But that still doesn’t mean she was getting all the parts she wanted. “As an actress, sometimes you...

'Patti Cake$' Stars Danielle Macdonald & Bridget Everett on Rapping, Karaoke and Crying at Cannes (Exclusive)
Bridget Everett
Sitting down to interview Bridget Everett and Danielle Macdonald, it would have been too easy to forget to turn on the recorder. Everett, an icon on the New York City alt-cabaret scene and protégée of sorts to Amy Schumer, arrives first and asks if it would be Ok to let Poppy, her Pomeranian and an Instagram star in her own right, out of her carrier during our time. (Everett's necklace says "Poppy" in gold cursive.) We're deep into sharing our rescue dogs' obsessive-compulsive behaviors when Macdonald, an Aussie actress who's had bit roles on American Horror Story and Glee, sidles up.

The 26-year-old is still wearing her high heels after many hours of press junketing at Hotel Polomar in West Hollywood, which Everett commends her for. (She'd already swapped her own for a pair of pink flip-flops.) Talk of heels turns to talk of drag and, before long, Macdonald and I realize we both played in the same...

Interview, Audio: Bridget Everett Plays Mom in ‘Patti Cake$’
Chicago – Bridget Everett is a New York City entertainment maven, as a singer and “cabaret provocateur.” She is breaking out recently as a movie actor, with the just-released comedy “Fun Mom Dinner” and her latest role, as a mother to “Patti Cake$,” a white girl hip-hop artist from New Jersey with a determination of gold.

“Patti Cake$” features Danielle Macdonald in the title role, that of a bartender with a talent for hip hop rhymes, and her friends Jheri (Sid Dhananjay) and Bob (Mamoudou Athie), who want to help her record her beats. Patti’s home life is difficult, as her mother Barb (Bridget Everett) is depressed and unstable, plus her grandmother (Cathy Moriarty) is fighting a homebound illness. But Patti will not be stopped, despite her weight, the odds and her obsession with rapper O-z (Sahr Ngaujah). The film was written and directed by Geremy Jasper, making his debut as a feature filmmaker.

Toni Collette Named Her Daughter Sage Because ‘She Was Already Teaching Me in the Womb’
Toni Collette
When it comes to a girls’ night out, Toni Collette knows exactly what she wants.

“Good food, good wine and swimming in the ocean with no clothes on,” the Australian actress tells People in this week’s issue. “I love a skinny dip!”

Appearing in the new comedy Fun Mom Dinner — which follows four very different moms on a night out together — Collette was drawn to the film because “it has such a big, beautiful bold heart and says a really great thing about female friendship,” she says.

“It’s about these women not only connecting with each other unexpectedly,...

‘Fun Mom Dinner’ VOD Review
Stars: Molly Shannon, Bridget Everett, Katie Aselton, Toni Collette, Adam Levine, Paul Rust, Paul Rudd, David Wain | Written by Julie Rudd | Directed by Alethea Jones

Four moms, whose only common ground is their kids’ preschool class, arrange a fun mom dinner with the sole aim to drink wine, gossip, and bond without worrying about their kids, husbands and housework for the night. The dinner guests include the newly divorced Jamie (Molly Shannon), super mom Melanie (Bridget Everett), the stressed-out Emily (Katie Aselton), and Emily’s best friend and social outcast Kate (Toni Collette), who was more than a little reluctant in accepting the invite. The night begins as a disaster, but the combination of alcohol, karaoke, and a very cute bartender (Maroon 5′s Adam Levine), leads to an unforgettable night where these seemingly different women realise they have more in common than just motherhood, mess and men.

For Our Consideration: The stale “women gone wild” genre could stand to shake things up
“It’s a shame that there are so few ensemble women’s films that people are only able to look at what the coincidences are,” says Alethea Jones, director of Fun Mom Dinner. “There’s such a proliferation of male content ensembles, but nobody says, ‘It’s all dudes.’ People have been talking about that we have Fun Mom in our title, and Bad Moms have moms in their title, but nobody ever asks the director and writer of Ant-Man, and Superman, and Batman… the list goes on.”

Jones has a point. While speaking to The A.V. Club, she and writer Julie Rudd make clear they realize that Fun Mom Dinner is arriving amid an especially prolific time for “moms gone wild” movies: 2017 alone has seen the release of Rough Night, Girls Trip, Fun Mom Dinner, and, come November, A Bad Moms Christmas. (Those first three arrived mere ...

Fun Mom Dinner movie review: stay at home, moms
MaryAnn’s quick take… Stereotypes and contrived shenanigans don’t seem to actually offer much catharsis for harried moms seeking escape. And the dads inevitably butt into their me-time. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m desperate for stories about women

I’m “biast” (con): nothing

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

Fun? Nope, not for us. Dinner? Mostly offscreen. Moms? Check… though even here, in a movie allegedly devoted to mom time, they have to share the spotlight with dads. Wtf?

Fun Mom Dinner (the title sounds like a Japanglish attempt to sound cool) starts off promising enough, with Toni Collette’s (Krampus, Miss You Already) Kate complaining about how child-focused the interactions of so many women can be — “I’m mommed out,” she sighs, with a refreshing lack of reverence for motherhood, something that cinema is sorely lacking — and with Katie Aselton’s (The Gift,...

Toni Collette Will ‘Eventually’ Let Her Children Watch The Sixth Sense: ‘It Would Scare the S— Out of Them’ Now

Toni Collette may just have that extra mommy sense!

The actress reveals in an episode of People’s Mamarazzi that she hasn’t let her children see one of her more famous films because she thinks it’s too frightening for them at their current ages.

Collette was nominated for an Academy Award for her role in the supernatural thriller, which she says her kids will “eventually” see when they get older.

New to Streaming: ‘Alien: Covenant,’ ‘Shin Godzilla,’ ‘Adaptation,’ ‘Slack Bay,’ and More
With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’ve taken it upon ourselves to highlight the titles that have recently hit platforms. Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.

Adaptation (Spike Jonze)

It’s almost depressing to rewatch Adaptation in 2016, because it’s a reminder of how strong an actor Nicolas Cage is when he actually invests himself in good projects. It was soon after this that his career went off the rails, but he’s remarkably impressive here, playing the dual roles of Charlie Kaufman and his fictional twin brother, Donald. As much a mind-fuck as any other Kaufman screenplay,...

‘Fun Mom Dinner’ Review: Toni Collette, Molly Shannon Go Wild, Predictable Hijinks Ensue
Toni Collette, Molly Shannon, Katie Aselton, and Bridget Everett in Fun Mom Dinner (2017)
“Fun Mom Dinner” kicks off the way you might expect a comedy with that title would: a montage of four mothers’ school mornings, with each trying with varying degrees of success to wrangle their spawn until one ends up with poo on her face. Such broadness doesn’t bode well for the feature debuts of director Alethea Jones and scripter Julie Rudd. But although the filmmakers return to outsize wackiness too frequently, the film mercifully isn’t one chaotic gag after another. The titular event is launched when the relatively with-it Jamie (Molly Shannon) invites the new parent at her preschool,...

Movie Review: Moms run mild in the bloodless Fun Mom Dinner
Although the film, of course, lands on the conclusion that there’s more to moms—and to inter-mom friendships—than talking about potty training and turning in early, Fun Mom Dinner, the latest in a series of female-oriented R-rated ensemble comedies, doesn’t sell that idea very well. Posters for the film promise a wild, drug-and-alcohol-fueled ride à la the recent Rough Night, but while there is plenty of drinking and a fair amount of drugs (just pot though, let’s not go crazy), the overall effect is more akin to passing out on the couch at 9 p.m. than partying until dawn.

At first, Fun Mom Dinner seems to promise (or threaten, as the case may be) a different sort of movie, front-loading some of its crudest sexual humor as we introduce our four fun moms. There’s Kate (Toni Collette), the anti-social pothead; Jamie (Molly Shannon), the ...

Amy Schumer Gives Anne Hathaway Props for Taking on Barbie Role: 'She's Perfect!'

Scheduling conflicts may have prevented Amy Schumer from continuing in Sony Pictures’ live-action Barbie movie, but that doesn’t mean she’s mad at Anne Hathaway for possibly stepping into the title character’s plastic heels.

On Tuesday, the 36-year-old comedian posted about the potential casting of Hathaway in the role, responding to news that the Oscar-winning actress was in talks to replace her in the feature film.

Newswire: Anne Hathaway might step into Barbie’s extremely uncomfortable shoes
The Barbie movie that somehow keeps happening continues to happen, as The Hollywood Reporter claims that Anne Hathaway is in talks to step into Barbie’s high-heeled plastic shoes. With her being an Oscar winner and this being a movie based on a doll based on a German erotic novelty gift and all, Hathaway reportedly agreed to negotiations as long as she got to hand-pick a director. That director is Alethea Jones, an Australian up-and-comer whose feature debut, Fun Mom Dinner, comes out on August 4.

Before previous star Amy Schumer dropped out, citing scheduling conflicts, the movie was said to be about a misfit Barbie who’s exiled to the real world after realizing that sitting around the Malibu Barbie Beach House with Ken all day is bullshit. (We’re paraphrasing, but you get the idea.) Schumer and her sister were also taking a third pass on the script ...

Anne Hathaway in early talks to join Sony’s Barbie Movie
Author: Zehra Phelan

Sony’s Barbie movie has started making moves with the news that Oscar Winning Anne Hathaway is currently in talks to secure a deal to star in the movie.

Although very early days, Hathaway’s involvement will come down to her busy schedule, having only recently wrapped the all female Oceans Eight, Hathaway is due to start filming her next project Im Global’s sci-fi outing O2. If the filming schedules do not conflict Hathaway could be a sure thing.

Amy Schumer has already been linked to star in the movie which is looking to have Fun Mom Dinner’s Alethea Jones at the helm, Jones is also currently in talks with Sony to direct.

Amy Pascal, who is responsible for producing the all female 2016 Ghostbusters and the more recent Ton Holland lead Spider-Man: Homecoming is producing the Barbie movie with Walter F. Parkes and Laurie MacDonald,...

Molly Shannon And Toni Collette Party Up In ‘Fun Mom Dinner’ Trailer
A movie featuring the diverse talents of Molly Shannon (Other People) and Toni Collette (Lucky Them) is always a must watch for me, and though both actresses have shown their dramatic talents over the years, it's great to see them pair up for a straight up comedy. Toni Collette, Katie Aselton, Molly Shannon, and Bridget Everett Cut Loose in The Fun Mom Dinner Trailer
Every since The Hangover and Bridesmaids we've seen a number of entourage buddy comedies come and go. This year we already have Rough Night and the upcoming Girls Trip. Now there is another all-girl hangover-style comedy on the way, Fun Mom Dinner. The comedy is directed by Alethea Jones, and stars Toni Collette, Katie Aselton, Molly Shannon, Adam Levin, Rob Huebel, and Paul Rudd.

The plot of Fun Mom Dinner is described:

Four moms, whose only common ground is their kids’ preschool class, decide to get together for a harmless “fun mom dinner.” The night begins as a disaster, but the combination of alcohol, karaoke, and a cute bartender, leads to an unforgettable night where these seemingly different women realize they have more in common than motherhood and men.

The film is due out in August.

Coming Distractions: Molly Shannon and Toni Collette have a Fun Mom Dinner in this trailer
We’ve seen Bad Moms before, but if those bad moms are bit too bad for you, then perhaps a Fun Mom Dinner will be more to your tastes. Unlike that other movie, this one is about a nice, quiet evening where nothing goes wrong and everybody gets along—at least for the first chunk of this trailer. Eventually, Adam Levine gets involved, the fun moms buy some weed from David Wain and Paul Rudd, and then the fun dads (Adam Scott and Rob Huebel) get locked out of their house.

Fun Mom Dinner stars Katie Aselton, Toni Collette, Moly Shannon, and Bridget Everett, and it will be in theaters on August 4.

Fun Mom Dinner Trailer: These Mothers Are Even Worse
Toni Collette, Molly Shannon, Katie Aselton, and Bridget Everett in Fun Mom Dinner (2017)
Momentum Pictures has debuted the first trailer, poster and photos for Fun Mom Dinner, which premieres in select theaters, On Demand and on Digital HD August 4th. This movie arrives a few months before Stx Entertainment's sequel A Bad Moms Christmas, a follow-up to last year's R-rated comedy hit Bad Moms, with this new comedy showcasing another group of hard-partying mothers, who just need a break from their families every once and awhile. This comedy also marks the feature debuts for a new writer and director, one of whom has a unique comedic connection.

Fun Mom Dinner marks the feature film debut for both director Alethea Jones and writer Julie Rudd. You may recognize the writer's last name, since Julie Rudd is the wife of comedic superstar Paul Rudd, who has a "must-see cameo" in the comedy. He also serves as an executive producer alongside another co-star, Adam Scott, with...

Official Trailer for Another Wild Women Comedy 'Fun Mom Dinner'
"Moms - you're on!" Momentum Pictures has debuted an official trailer for the indie party comedy Fun Mom Dinner, which actually (surprisingly) first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and also played at the Sydney Film Festival. This film is the feature directorial debut of Australian filmmaker Alethea Jones, and is fun story of four wild moms who decide to get together for a harmless "fun mom dinner." The primary cast features Toni Collette, Katie Aselton, Molly Shannon, and Bridget Everett as the four moms. This also stars Adam Levine, Adam Scott, Paul Rust, Rob Huebel, David Wain, and Paul Rudd. There are quite a few of these "wild women" movies this year, between another Bad Moms, Rough Night, and Girls Trip. Not sure if this one looks any better or worse, but I do like the cast here. Have fun. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Alethea Jones' Fun Mom Dinner,...

‘Borg vs. McEnroe’ Trailer: Shia LeBeouf Is The Bad Boy Of Tennis In One Of Its Greatest Rivalries — Watch
Sverrir Gudnason and Shia LaBeouf in Borg/McEnroe (2017)
Tennis fans know the inevitable letdown that comes with the final match of the U.S. Open every summer, but 2017 brings two exciting fall movies to fill the void: “Battle of the Sexes,” where Emma Stone will play the great Billie Jean King, and “Borg vs. McEnroe,” which stars Shia LeBeouf as the notorious bad boy of tennis in a stylish drama about one of the sport’s greatest rivalries.

Swedish tennis player Bjorn Borg and American legend John McEnroe played each other 14 times on tour between the years 1978 and 1981. Each player won 7 times. Their rivalry was all the more fascinating due to their polarized demeanors: Borg was known for his zen-like cool on court, while McEnroe was an infamous firebrand, often yelling at umpires and wildly upsetting the balance of a game that reveres civility.

‘Fun Mom Dinner’ Trailer Brings Molly Shannon & Toni Collette To The Table For A Wild Comedy
You might not have known it, but “Fun Mom Dinner” played the Sundance Film Festival in January, and the distinct lack of buzz is probably telling. However, if you can’t wait until “A Bad Moms Christmas” to fill that sweet spot of ladies having a wild time, perhaps this’ll do the trick.

Toni Collette, Molly Shannon, Bridget Everett, and Katie Aselton come together for this familiar-sounding story of four Moms who take a break from their daily routine to have a night out, and, of course, things get out of hand.

‘Fun Mom Dinner’ Trailer: Toni Collette and Molly Shannon Let Loose In This Star-Studded Sundance Comedy — Watch
Adam Levine at an event for The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show (2011)
The Momsemble comedy goes indie with this Sundance farce from director Alethea Jones and writer Julie Rudd, which released a raucous first trailer today. It’s full of the kinds of shenanigans one might expect from a comedy about moms letting loose for an epic night: Flying poop, competitive bickering, clueless dads, and a trip to a weed dispensary. What could possibly go wrong?

Toni Collette and Molly Shannon lead a feisty mom group that includes Bridget Everett (“Patti Cake$”) and Katie Aselton (“The Gift”). The rest of the cast is like a who’s who of indie comedy: Adam Scott, Rob Huebel, Paul Rudd, Paul Rust, and John Early round it out. There’s even a bartending Adam Levine thrown in there. In this short glimpse, we see Collette playing against type as Kate, the mom...

Amazon vs. Netflix: An Itemized Guide to What You Should Be Streaming This Year
You time is valuable, and so are both services for different reasons.War Machine (Netflix)

Although there may be a competition going on between Amazon and Netflix for subscribers, the truth is that both company’s streaming services are essential for anyone who watches a lot of movies and TV and who wants to be part of the pop culture conversations as they happen.

There’s no denying that Amazon Prime is worth the $99/year, which not only gives you access to many movies but also a good amount of music streaming and digital media access, plus faster shipping for when you actually want some sort of physical product (you can also just get video content for $8.99/month, which oddly means paying more for less).

And Netflix is still a must-have for both its exclusive and nonexclusive content, though depending on one’s usage could be best for sporadic membership rather than continued subscription — now at $120/year...

Sundance Review: ‘Fun Mom Dinner’ Recycles Easy Jokes, Stumbles Through the Punchline
Hot on the heels of the studio comedy hit Bad Moms comes Fun Mom Dinner, an indie-fied, but no less broad version of mom’s night out from director Alethea Jones and screenwriter Julie Yaeger Rudd (wife of Paul). Despite a stacked cast and some impressive physical comedy, this film slips into ridiculousness without the laughs to back it up.

We meet four moms — Emily (Katie Aselton), Kate (Toni Collette), Melanie (Bridget Everett) and Jamie (Molly Shannon) — whose kids all attend to same pre-school. Kate’s got a solid, rebellious thing going on with her husband Andrew (Rob Huebel), her only mom friend being Emily, with whom she went to college. Emily is new to town and wants to please everybody, while her distracted husband Tom (Adam Scott) could care less. Melanie takes parenting a bit to seriously at the school and Jamie’s getting a divorce. The four get together for a…...

A Complete List of Films Sold At Sundance 2017
So far it’s a solid mix of narratives and documentaries.Step

It’s safe to say that the ultimate Sundance dream is to sell a film (second to Ava DuVernay casually walking by you, of course). Filmmakers want to sell their films so that their work can reach more audiences and they can hopefully go on to make bigger and better films. Studios want to buy films so that they can compete in the industry. Patrons especially want sales so that when their friends later ask if they want to see this new indie film that just came out they can casually go, “Is that finally out? It seems like Ages since I saw it at Sundance. Also did I tell you that Ava DuVernay walked by me this year? I did? Okay.”

The 2017 Sundance Film Festival is entering closing weekend with a decent number of those dream sales already under its belt. As...

One-Third of the Films At Sundance Were Directed By Women, But That Shouldn’t Be Confused With the Real World
John Turturro, Edie Falco, Jenny Slate, and Abby Quinn in Landline (2017)
Change may be coming slowly to the entertainment industry, but at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, a desire for diversity and inclusion amongst female filmmakers went beyond buzzwords.

Thirty-four percent of all films that screened at Sundance this year were directed by women – in years past, the average has hovered around 25 percent – and female filmmakers were prominent across all sections, with women debuting films in not just the competition sections, but also the forward-thinking Next section, the wild Midnight category (which played home to the long-gestating anthology “Xx,” featuring four shorts directed by women) and even the starry Premieres docket.

The rise of female-directed films was particularly felt at this year’s awards ceremony as two of the four juried competition directing awards went to women: “Beach Rats” helmer Eliza Hittman picked up the award in the U.

Sundance Sales Market: Netflix, Amazon Returned With Deep Pockets
Dee Rees
Deep-pocketed streaming giants Amazon and Netflix made bold strategic moves and spent handsomely for Sundance Film Festival titles again this year. Netflix paid $12.5 million for Dee Rees’ “Mudbound” set in the post-wwii South, $8 million for the Lily Collins anorexia drama “To the Bone,” $5 million for the Toni Collette-Molly Shannon comedy “Fun Mom Dinner,” and picked up both Jim Strouse’s festival closer “The Incredible Jessica James” and the Teresa Palmer psychological thriller “Berlin Syndrome.” The company also spent big on documentaries, including $5 million for the Russian sports-doping doc “Icarus” — the priciest nonfiction acquisition in Sundance history — and...

Paul Rudd Steps Out with Screenwriter Wife at Sundance Film Festival
Paul Rudd
For most of their two-decade-long relationship, Paul Rudd and his wife Julie Yaeger Rudd have remained largely private. But on Friday night, the actor and his publicist-turned-screenwriter wife were side-by-side on the red carpet for the premiere of their film Fun Mom Dinner.

Rudd, 47, and Yaeger Rudd share credits on the movie, as Yaeger Rudd wrote the screenplay and Rudd lent his acting chops to the film. (He is also an executive producer.) At the premiere of the movie at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival at Eccles Center Theatre in Park City, Utah, the couple both had a laid-back red carpet style.
