Laila! has flourished more in the year leading up to her 19th birthday than some artists do in decades. The Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter and producer first broke through on TikTok with spacey viral ditties “Like That” and “Not My Problem,” showing her intrinsic ear for R&b’s current wave and its off-center potential. She quickly followed that with her purely DIY debut album, Gap Year!, which helped nab Tyler, the Creator and Solange as fans.

The pandemic encouraged much of the world to pursue new (and likely temporary) hobbies — kitchen chemists experimented with sourdough starters, homeowners convinced themselves to be home renovators, and binge-watchers got really into Tiger King. For a then 14-year-old Laila Smith, it was GarageBand. Experimenting with Apple’s free music production software turned into posting her first song, “Like That,” to TikTok in 2023 as Laila!. The 32-second stop-motion clip of herself posing under blue and red lights holding a stuffed Pikachu pulled a million views but reached an algorithmic fever-pitch when...

Although some may find the new mystery Wicked Little Letters a bit lax in actual mystery, an incredibly strong cast, led by Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley manages to elevate the film to a wickedly clever piece that makes up for its shortcomings with unabashed enthusiasm and excitement.
Based on an allegedly true story, Wicked Little Letters tells the tale of two women: Edith Swan (Colman) and Rose Gooding (Buckley) who, after Rose is accused of sending Edith and several of the town’s residents several profane letters, set about investigating the crime themselves to prove that Rose is innocent.
Director Thea Sharrock – whose previous feature work includes The One and Only Ivan (2020) and Me Before You (2016) – works from a script that was penned by Jonny Sweet, an actor who has also written scripts for several episodes of the television programs Gap Year (2017), Together (2015), and Chickens (2011). Scottish thriller Guilt is back for the third and final chapter in the McCall Brothers trilogy. Neil Forsyth’s fiendishly plotted drama all began when Max and Jake – a ruthless lawyer who’d climbed his way out of his working class Leith upbringing to wealth and status, and his vinyl-loving record shop slacker sibling – were flung together when they tried to cover up an accidental hit-and-run. So began a complex and gripping story about money laundering, Edinburgh gangsters, betrayal, class, family and yes, guilt.
Series three finds Max and Jake forced back to Edinburgh where some old enemies await. They’re joined by Pi-turned legal advisor Kenny Burns, his police detective girlfriend Yvonne, criminal kingpin Maggie Lynch, dangerously unpredictable ex-con Teddy and more familiar faces from the first two series. Also appearing are a range of new characters, as follows:

Walking down the narrow staircases of your school hand-in-hand with a friend, struggling to learn to tie your shoes, or worrying about where to sit at lunch are among the moments that Wandel captures with an alarming sense of authenticity, to the point where her film could almost be confused for a documentary. “Playground” nimbly zeroes in on this world, seen through the eyes of the shy seven-year-old student Nora (Maya Vanderbeque), as she warily navigates her new school, the same that her older brother Abel (Günter Duret) attends.
Despite its title, however, Wandel’s focus is not the unbridled joy and freedom of childhood, though there are some rare instances of it here. Instead, she paints a harrowing picture of the memories many of us have tried to forget, where school is a warzone rife with violence and bullying, one that children are forced to largely maneuver alone.

Film Movement has acquired U.S. rights to rising Belgian filmmaker Laura Wandel’s critically acclaimed feature debut “Playground” (“Un Monde”) which opened at Cannes’ Un Certain Regard and won the Fipresci award. Paris-based Indie Sales represents the film in international markets.
Tackling the timely issue of school bullying, “Playground” went on to play at the San Sebastian and the BFI film festivals. The heart-wrenching film follows 7-year-old Nora (Maya Vanderbeque) and her older brother Abel (Günter Duret) going back to school. When Nora witnesses Abel being bullied by other kids, she rushes to protect him by warning their father, but Abel forces her to remain silent. Caught in a conflict of loyalty, Nora will ultimately try to find her place, torn between children’s and adult’s worlds.

"We live in a society now where everybody abides by the rules, and people don't even know what the rule is or where it came from, they just abide by it." 1091 Pictures has revealed an official trailer for the sports documentary film titled Gap Year, made by filmmakers T.J. Regan & Josh Kahn. This medium-length doc film runs 50 minutes and focuses on the world of basketball. It's specifically described as a "coming-of-age business of basketball film [that] explores the triumphs and tribulations of Darius as he enters uncharted territory for an NBA prospect, navigating a corporate day job while training for the NBA Draft at the age of 18." The doc profiles Darius Bazley, a modern-day high school basketball phenom, who decided to take an internship instead of go to college to play basketball for them. This is a solid trailer explaining the stakes of his decision and what it means for the basketball world,...

Chances are, if you’ve seen many of the late films of Theodoros Angelopoulos, Michelangelo Antonioni (everything since L’avventura), Marco Bellocchio, Vittorio De Sica, Federico Fellini (almost everything since Amarcord), Mario Monicelli, Elio Petri, Francesco Rosi, Andrei Tarkovsky (Nostalghia), the Taviani brothers, and/or Luchino Visconti, and paid much attention to their script credits, you know who Tonino Guerra (1920–2012) was and is—a ubiquitous presence in modernist European cinema, especially its Italian branches. Petri was his first cinematic employer, after Guerra started out as a schoolteacher and poet whose parents were illiterate; later on, he became a visual artist as well as a screenwriter with over a hundred credits.Even after one acknowledges the exceptionally collaborative role played by multiple writers on Italian films, it seems that no one else was considered quite as essential by so many important directors. Netflix has released a trailer for Love Wedding Repeat. This serves as the feature directorial debut of Dean Craig, who viewers may know as the writer of Death at a Funeral. Craig has teamed up with an ensemble cast, led by Sam Clafin and Olivia Munn, for a new rom-com, which is something the streaming service has excelled at in recent years. Though, this one comes with a few twists along the way, based on what we're seeing in the trailer.
The Netflix original trailer kicks off with a bunch of guests arriving at what looks to be a rather fancy wedding, with a cringeworthy awkward encounter to get the party started. As is often the case, weddings can be a complex affair and this is no different. Though, in this case, things get extra messy and downright disastrous. Depictions of tobacco in the most popular TV shows among young people surged nearly fourfold in the past year — and Netflix’s “Stranger Things” season 2 was the worst offender, according to a new report from anti-smoking group Truth Initiative.
In response, Netflix said that going forward, all new shows it commissions with ratings of TV-14 or below (and all films rated PG-13 or below) will exclude smoking and e-cigarette use, except for “reasons of historical or factual accuracy.” The streamer also said new projects with higher ratings will not depict smoking or e-cigarette use “unless it’s essential to the creative vision of the artist or because it’s character-defining (historically or culturally important).”
“Netflix strongly supports artistic expression,” a company spokesman said in a statement to Variety. “We also recognize that smoking is harmful and when portrayed positively on screen can adversely influence young people.”

“Kaos” is coming to Netflix following “The End of The F***ing World.” New scripted series “Kaos” is billed as a contemporary reimagining of Greek mythology, and Netflix said it would explore themes of gender politics, power, and life in the underworld.
“The End of The F***ing World” scribe Charlie Covell will pen the new show. It will adopt the same darkly comic tone as her earlier series, which starred Alex Lawther (“Black Mirror”) as an animal-killing teenager who believes he is a psychopath.
“‘The End of the F***ing World’ gets under the viewer’s skin with sharp, bloody intensity,” Variety said in its review of Covell’s earlier series, which was produced by BBC-backed Clerkenwell Films. Netflix executives have spoken, without offering any data, of the success of the series taking them by surprise.
Covell is an actor and writer. Onscreen she has been in “Marcella” and “Peep Show.

TNT and Channel 4 have cast Janeane Garofalo in the upcoming Foreign Bodies TV series. The comedic drama follows a group of young adults traveling across China, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam.
