Sony Pictures Television-owned “Sex Education” producer Eleven has promoted Carissa Hope Lynch to the position of creative director.

She will report to Eleven founders Joel Wilson and Jamie Campbell.

Hope Lynch has been at Eleven since 2019, working on projects including “White Stork” for Netflix and the upcoming young adult horror series “Red Rose” for the BBC and Netflix. She has also developed a number of projects that have found homes at Channel 4, Netflix, the BBC and Sky, working with creatives including Mark Denton and Jonny Stockwood, Mika Watkins, Harry and Jack Williams, Chandni Lakhani, and Paul Andrew Williams and Caroline Bartleet in the process.

She is also passionate about discovering new voices and in 2021 conceived, designed, and co-facilitated Eleven’s script editor training scheme, Duly Noted, in collaboration with Tolula Dada.

Walking down the narrow staircases of your school hand-in-hand with a friend, struggling to learn to tie your shoes, or worrying about where to sit at lunch are among the moments that Wandel captures with an alarming sense of authenticity, to the point where her film could almost be confused for a documentary. “Playground” nimbly zeroes in on this world, seen through the eyes of the shy seven-year-old student Nora (Maya Vanderbeque), as she warily navigates her new school, the same that her older brother Abel (Günter Duret) attends.

Despite its title, however, Wandel’s focus is not the unbridled joy and freedom of childhood, though there are some rare instances of it here. Instead, she paints a harrowing picture of the memories many of us have tried to forget, where school is a warzone rife with violence and bullying, one that children are forced to largely maneuver alone.

Film Movement has acquired U.S. rights to rising Belgian filmmaker Laura Wandel’s critically acclaimed feature debut “Playground” (“Un Monde”) which opened at Cannes’ Un Certain Regard and won the Fipresci award. Paris-based Indie Sales represents the film in international markets.

Tackling the timely issue of school bullying, “Playground” went on to play at the San Sebastian and the BFI film festivals. The heart-wrenching film follows 7-year-old Nora (Maya Vanderbeque) and her older brother Abel (Günter Duret) going back to school. When Nora witnesses Abel being bullied by other kids, she rushes to protect him by warning their father, but Abel forces her to remain silent. Caught in a conflict of loyalty, Nora will ultimately try to find her place, torn between children’s and adult’s worlds.

Paris-based Indie Sales has boarded sales on Belgian director Laura Wandel’s feature debut Playground, which has been selected to screen in Cannes in Un Certain Regard next month.

As well as the Un Certain Regard prize, the drama will also be in the running for Cannes’ Caméra d’Or, open to all first features across the Official Selection and parallel sections of Directors’ Fortnight and Critics’ Week.

In April, Variety announced that a four-part documentary series following Spanish basketball great Pau Gasol had gone into production and was tracking his return to European basketball at 40 years old and following a serious foot injury which required surgery in 2019. Now, Spanish fans will be able to catch the yet-untitled special on Amazon Prime Video, after the streamer picked up the exclusive rights in a deal brokered by Prime Video Content Spain head Ricardo Cabornero and Fernando “Ferran” Prieto on behalf of the filmmakers.

Worldwide rights outside of Spain are still available and being handled by Rtg Features out of the U.S.

Production is underway on a four-episode docuseries centering on top basketball player Pau Gasol, Variety can reveal exclusively. The series chronicles Gasol, the two-time NBA champion with the Los Angeles Lakers and six-time NBA All-Star, as he winds down his professional career.

The as yet untitled series is directed by Oriol Bosch (“Andrés Iniesta: The Unexpected Hero”), and produced by PG Productions, Rtg Features and THINK450, the content arm of the National Basketball Players Assn. (Nbpa). PG Productions and Rtg Features are handling sales.

Gasol’s last NBA game was in March 2019. In May of that year, he underwent surgery to repair a stress fracture in his left foot and has been working to get back on the court ever since. Last month, Gasol re-signed with Fc Barcelona—where his professional career began over 20 years ago—as he prepares to chase an elusive Olympic gold medal in Tokyo this summer.

Sony Pictures Television is close to taking a stake in “Sex Education” producer Eleven.

It is understood that Sony has beaten off a number of potential buyers for U.K.-based Eleven, whose standing has been buoyed internationally by the success of Netflix hit “Sex Education.”

Sony is said to be close to taking a significant stake in Eleven, and will reportedly buy out Channel 4’s 20% holding in the company. At this stage, it is unclear if Sony is taking a minority or controlling stake in Eleven. Channel 4 invested in Eleven back in 2014 as part of its Indie Growth Fund initiative.

Eleven was founded by creative directors Jamie Campbell and Joel Wilson in 2006, and works across drama and factual. Its credits also include Channel 4 and Hulu drama “Gap Year,” Sky’s “The Enfield Haunting” and Channel 4’s “The Secret Life Of The Pub.”

Depictions of tobacco in the most popular TV shows among young people surged nearly fourfold in the past year — and Netflix’s “Stranger Things” season 2 was the worst offender, according to a new report from anti-smoking group Truth Initiative.

In response, Netflix said that going forward, all new shows it commissions with ratings of TV-14 or below (and all films rated PG-13 or below) will exclude smoking and e-cigarette use, except for “reasons of historical or factual accuracy.” The streamer also said new projects with higher ratings will not depict smoking or e-cigarette use “unless it’s essential to the creative vision of the artist or because it’s character-defining (historically or culturally important).”

“Netflix strongly supports artistic expression,” a company spokesman said in a statement to Variety. “We also recognize that smoking is harmful and when portrayed positively on screen can adversely influence young people.”

The legacy of the influential sci-fi author, Ursula K. Le Guin, appears to be highly coveted in the immediate aftermath of her death this past January, with live-action adaptation projects continuing to join the queue. While prospects are glistening for a movie adaptation of The Telling, as well as a properly-reverent movie adaptation of Le Guin’s sprawling magnum opus, the Earthsea novels, the latest project is a bit more of an esoteric choice from her works, a 1969 novelette, called Nine Lives.

Nine Lives is expected to commence production in the summer of 2019 with U.K. producers Gavin Humphries (Pin Cushion) of Quark Films and former Sony Pictures International producer Josephine Rose, reports Deadline. “Kaos” is coming to Netflix following “The End of The F***ing World.” New scripted series “Kaos” is billed as a contemporary reimagining of Greek mythology, and Netflix said it would explore themes of gender politics, power, and life in the underworld.

“The End of The F***ing World” scribe Charlie Covell will pen the new show. It will adopt the same darkly comic tone as her earlier series, which starred Alex Lawther (“Black Mirror”) as an animal-killing teenager who believes he is a psychopath.

“‘The End of the F***ing World’ gets under the viewer’s skin with sharp, bloody intensity,” Variety said in its review of Covell’s earlier series, which was produced by BBC-backed Clerkenwell Films. Netflix executives have spoken, without offering any data, of the success of the series taking them by surprise.

Covell is an actor and writer. Onscreen she has been in “Marcella” and “Peep Show.

TNT and Channel 4 have cast Janeane Garofalo in the upcoming Foreign Bodies TV series. The comedic drama follows a group of young adults traveling across China, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam.
