Leo Maidenberg’s Paris-based company Place du Marché Productions is developing a slate of French and international films and TV series with acclaimed talents, including Daphna Levin, the creator of the Israeli series “Euphoria,” as well as Sarah Kaminsky (“Raid Dingue”) and Leïla Sy (“Banlieusards”).

Maidenberg, who launched Place du Marché in 2018 after a career in diplomacy and made his producing debut with Caroline Fourest’s politically charged action film “Sisters in Arms,” has teamed with Kim Younes at Elvie Productions on a pair of high concept Israeli series.

The first title produced by the two banners is “The Truth,” a police thriller series co-written and directed by Levin, whose credits also include the original Israeli series “In Therapy.” Set in Tel Aviv, “The Truth” opens on the day of the final verdict for the most controversial murder case in Israel, 10 years after the incident which took place in a high school gym.

'Raid: Special Unit' starring Danny Boon heading to China
Exclusive: Chinese buyer Apollo are hungry for European movies.

Beijing and La-based distributor Red Apollo Group is lining up a Chinese theatrical release for French action comedy Raid: Special Unit (Raid Dingue), starring Dany Boon, at the end of August, 2017.

The company has secured a non revenue-sharing quota slot for the recent French hit, which Pathe is handling internationally.

The film played at the Beijing International Film Festival last month with Boon and his co-star Alice Pol in attendance. Red Apollo is also in talks with Boon about Chinese co-productions.

While Red Apollo has focused on digital distribution in recent years, Raid: Special Unit kicks off a drive to increase its slate of Chinese theatrical releases to around three to four titles a year.

The company is also hoping to secure a quota slot for Snd’s Family Heist (Mes Tresors), starring Jean Reno, before the end of 2017.

“We believe French comedies have a lot of potential...

Dany Boon at an event for Lolo (2015)
'R.A.I.D. Special Unit' ('Raid dingue'): Film Review
Dany Boon at an event for Lolo (2015)

The films Boon has directed since then, Nothing to Declare (8 million admissions) and Superchondriac (5 million), have also been hits but saw diminishing box-office and creative returns and that trend unfortunately continues with his latest, R.A.I.D. Special Unit (Raid Dingue).

An awkward mix of action film, terrorist plot, a-propos-of-nothing 1980s cross-dressing homage,...

Paris-based genre specialist WTFilms has taken on international sales of mainstream, same-sex romantic comedy Kiss Me! (Embrasse Moi!) in which the protagonist falls for a woman with 76 ex-girlfriends and a crazy family.

The company will kick-off sales on the title, which is in post-production, at the Unifrance Rendez-vous with French Cinema this week.

French stand-up comedian Océanerosemarie – best known for her one woman show La Lesbienne Invisible – makes her directorial and big screen debut in the film.

She plays a happy-go-lucky osteopath who falls for the beautiful Cécile, an artist who has taken a personal vow of celibacy after a series of failed relationships.
