Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World charts a 4K Ultra HD digital & Blu-ray release for the first time
Image
Peter Weir’s Academy Award-winning naval epic Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World will make its maiden voyage onto 4K Ultra HD for the first time ever on Digital and Blu-ray on August 5, 2025! Set during the Napoleonic Wars, it stars Russell Crowe in one of his most celebrated roles as Captain Jack Aubrey. The sprawling high-seas drama is a masterclass in filmmaking, with Weir’s eye for action elevating the story to great heights.

Adapted from the tenth novel in Patrick O’Brian’s legendary ‘Aubrey/Maturin’ series, the film stars Russell Crowe as Captain “Lucky Jack” Aubrey, the Royal Navy’s most daring and battle-tested commander, and Paul Bettany as his close friend, ship’s surgeon, and naturalist Stephen Maturin. When Hms Surprise is ambushed by a superior enemy vessel, Aubrey must confront the brutal challenges of war, the unforgiving sea, and the limits of leadership. With...

Six Scary Short Horror Films to Give You Nightmares!
Image
Master of Horror Stephen King once said that a good short story is like a quick kiss in the dark from a stranger. He may have been referring to literature, but I think the same comparison can be made when discussing short-form filmmaking as well. After all, genre shorts tend to be at their best when simply hinting at a larger and more sinister world before ending on a single, satisfying scare.

Unfortunately, very few horror fans are in the habit of consuming short-form horror outside of anthology compilations and TV shows. This means that there’s a lot of great scary media out there that is yet to be appreciated by mainstream audiences. With that in mind, we’ve decided to come up with a list recommending six horror shorts to give you nightmares.

From viral scares on YouTube to shot-on-video classics, the following list will highlight a wide...

Wands at the ready Potterheads — here's a bit of Friday evening news that's sure to bewitch the mind and ensnare the senses. Following hot on the heels of John Lithgow's casting as Professor Albus Dumbledore in HBO's upcoming Harry Potter TV series, it looks like the network giant may have just found two more acting heavyweights prepared to board the Hogwarts Express and take up post at fiction's most famous school of witchcraft and wizardry. According to Deadline, Oscar nominee and Kaos star Janet McTeer is in talks to play Professor Minerva McGonagall in HBO's ambitious new show, while The Lazarus Project's Paapa Essiedu — long rumoured to be on the Wizarding World casting wishlist — is reportedly close to closing a deal to play Potions Master and actual Half-Blood Prince Professor Severus Snape.

Originally portrayed by the late, great Dame Maggie Smith and the also sorely missed Alan Rickman respectively,...

This 1 Change Could Make a New Pokémon Anime Perfect for the Franchise's Older Fans
Image
Over the years, Pokémon's original fan base has grown from young children excited about adventure into adults with their own lives and jobs to take care of. Although these older fans may still have a special place in their hearts for Pokémon, the anime may not appeal to them as much as it used to. This is because they've grown as people. Their goals and personalities have changed with age.

Pokémon should appeal to their original older audience with a new anime. All it would take is one key change to make the anime relatable to these fans. Adult protagonists, in age and emotional maturity, would make it easier for old-school fans to relate to a brand-new anime, if the Pokémon Company ever wanted to give it a shot.

The Best Thing for the Pokemon Franchise is an Older Cast This Anime Doesn't Need the Usual Youthful Protagonists

Netflix Thailand Unveils Series From ‘How To Make Millions Before Grandma Dies’ Team & Feature Film Slate
Image
Netflix Thailand is adding a rags-to-riches series exec produced by the team behind How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies and a feel-good movie about snow sculpting to a nine-strong originals slate for 2025.

The streamer has unveiled one new series, one returner and six movies. As revealed last week, it is also putting a February 27 launch date on its upcoming series Dalah: Death and the Flowers.

The slate comes at a delicate time for Netflix Thailand, which this week saw originals chief Yongyoot Thongkongtoon exit for “personal reasons,” according to trade title Content Asia.

On the series front comes Mad Unicorn and the returning faith and finance drama The Believers. Mad Unicorn is from Thai studio Gdh 559 and is notable as the series directorial debut of Nottapon Boonprakob, a writer for One for the Road. Jira Maligool and Vanridee Pongsittisak, who were behind the megahit film How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies,...

‘The Sandman’ Ending With Season 2 at Netflix
Image
Netflix will close out its comic-book series The Sandman with the forthcoming second season.

The streamer made the announcement on social media Friday, saying the second season — due sometime later this year — will conclude the story. The decision to end the show also comes as Neil Gaiman, who created the Sandman comic and developed and executive produces the series, has been accused of sexual assault and misconduct by several women. Gaiman has denied the allegations.

Sources say the second season of The Sandman will conclude the story arc for Dream (Tom Sturridge), the show’s central character. Production on the season wrapped last summer.

“The Sandman series has always been focused exclusively on Dream’s story, and back in 2022, when we looked at the remaining Dream material from the comics, we knew we only had enough story for one more season,” showrunner Allan Heinberg said in a statement. “We are...

Image
Neil Gaiman has been dropped by Dark Horse Comics following a bombshell New York Magazine cover story in which several woman accused the “Sandman” and “Coraline” author of sexual assault.

In a post on X Friday night, the publisher wrote: “Dark Horse takes seriously the allegations against Neil Gaiman and we are no longer publishing his works. Confirming that the ‘Anansi Boys’ comic series and collected volume have been canceled.”

Gaiman denied the allegations brought forth in the Jan. 13 story, writing on his blog the next day: “I have never engaged in non-consensual sexual activity with anyone. Ever.” Representatives for Gaiman did not immediately respond to Variety‘s request for comment regarding Dark Horse Comics’ statement.

Amazon’s TV adaptation of “Anansi Boys,” which is expected to release this year, had not been affected by the allegations at the time of the NY Mag story. Variety has reached out to Amazon for further comment.

What Happens to The Sandman 2 After Disturbing Allegations Against Neil Gaiman – Netflix Can Lose 1 of Its Hit Franchise
Image
Ever since Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman television series came out back in 2022, it has been hailed as one of the best comic book-based TV adaptations of all time, praised both for the epic storyline as well as how stunningly it has been brought to life. But as successful as the smash-hit franchise may have been for Netflix, its future seems rather bleak.

The reason behind this is simple: The mastermind behind it all has been garnering a lot of controversy as of late as disturbing s-xual assault allegations make their way against him. The worst part is that these accusations haven’t come from only one accuser but many women, which is now making it seem like the streaming giant might as well end up losing the major cash cow saga.

‘Simpsons’ Fans Wonder If Disney Will Pull Neil Gaiman’s Episode
Image
Warning: This article contains references to sexual assault and child sexual abuse.

Neil Gaiman has now been accused of sexual misconduct by eight women, some of whom are claiming that the fantasy author committed violent sexual assault. The allegations against Gaiman were first made public in the Tortoise Media podcast Master last summer, and this week New York Magazine published a highly detailed, truly sickening exposé on the subject. Gaiman has denied some of the article’s claims.

And while this is by no means the most pressing issue right now, for those of us who spend nearly as much time in Springfield as we do in the real world, there is the question of what will happen to the Simpsons episode in which Gaiman guest stars.

Neil Gaiman Denies Sexual Assault Allegations: ‘I’ve Never Engaged in Non-Consensual Sexual Activity With Anyone. Ever’
Image
Neil Gaiman has responded to a New York Magazine cover story in which several women accused the “Sandman” and “Coraline” author of sexual assault, writing on his personal blog, “I have never engaged in non-consensual sexual activity with anyone. Ever.”

In the full statement, posted Tuesday morning, the author expressed regret for how he has handled personal relationships, writing that “I was emotionally unavailable while being sexually available, self-focused and not as thoughtful as I could or should have been.” However, he underlined that he denies any allegation of sexual assault: “I’m not willing to turn my back on the truth, and I can’t accept being described as someone I am not, and cannot and will not admit to doing things I didn’t do.”

Back in July, Tortoise Media broke the news that Gaiman had been accused of sexual assault by two women and released a six-part podcast,...

Peter Weir's 'Picnic at Hanging Rock' Gets 4K Trailer & Theatrical Run
Image
It's time to pay homage to a masterpiece that put film legend Peter Weir on the map and in the hearts of cinephiles everywhere. The acclaimed Australian director's 1975 hit film Picnic at Hanging Rock has been restored in stunning 4K, shown off in a new trailer for the re-release of the film. Without the success of the surreal 70s film, audiences wouldn't have the more mainstream cinematic masterpieces from the brilliant mind of Weir, like The Truman Show, Dead Poets Society, Master, and Commander: The Far Side of The World, so it's only right that the film be handled with the utmost respect and care.

While the film has been available from the Criterion Collection for several years, Criterion’s sister company Janus Film is re-releasing Picnic at Hanging Rock in 4K at the end of January. Audiences will be able to relive, or experience for the first time, the...

Image
You know the phrase, “never meet your heroes”? Well, for some fans of Neil Gaiman, that lesson is hitting a lot harder than they ever imagined. The celebrated author behind The Sandman and Coraline has found himself in a storm of serious allegations. Once a shining beacon in the world of fantasy, his name is now tangled with claims of s*xual assault from multiple women.

But while the accusations were initially discussed in smaller circles, mainstream outlets had yet to fully pick up the story. That is, until New York Magazine published its own investigation, adding much-needed weight to the claims.

Neil Gaiman Faces New Sexual Assault Allegations
Image
New allegations of sexual misconduct and assault have surfaced against Neil Gaiman, the best-selling fantasy author whose books Good Omens, American Gods and The Sandman have become TV series.

On Monday, New York Magazine published a cover story titled, “There Is No Safe Word,” with writer Lila Shapiro’s piece detailing new claims against Gaiman based on interviews with eight women. This follows the July 2024 release of the Tortoise Media podcast Master, which reported earlier graphic accusations by five women against the celebrated genre writer. (Four of those women were among those who spoke for the New York Magazine piece.)

One of the claims comes from Scarlett Pavlovich, a former babysitter for Gaiman and his ex-wife Amanda Palmer, who described being sexually assaulted in February 2022 by Gaiman in New Zealand in a backyard bathtub.

She also alleged Gaiman assaulted her under the blankets on a hotel room bed while his...

Neil Gaiman Allegations: Multiple Women Accuse ‘Sandman’ Author of Sexual Assault
Image
Multiple women have accused “The Sandman” and “Coraline” author Neil Gaiman of sexual assault in a New York Magazine cover story, speaking on the record about their experiences.

Back in July, Tortoise Media broke the news that Gaiman had been accused of sexual assault by two women and released a six-part podcast, “Master,” which covered the allegations of five women. However, several of the women had used only their first names or pseudonyms to protect their identities, and a major news organization had yet to corroborate the full extent of the reporting — until now.

In the New York Magazine piece, titled “There Is No Safe Word,” reporter Lila Shapiro spoke to eight women who had similar experiences with Gaiman, four of which also participated in Tortoise’s podcast. One of these women, Scarlett Pavlovich, was 22 when she first met Gaiman’s ex-wife, Amanda Palmer, in New Zealand. They struck up...

Neil Gaiman Accused Of Sexual Assault By Multiple Women In Detailed Report
Image
This story contains discussion about sexual assault.

Neil Gaiman has been accused of sexual assault by multiple women in a detailed report, following earlier allegations by five different women in 2024. Gaiman is a fantasy author best known for his novels and comics, in particular many that have been adapted into TV shows. This includes Starz's American Gods, Netflix's The Sandman, and Prime Video's Good Omens. His work has also netted him various awards in writing, and, in 2023, placed him on Time Magazine's 100 most influential people in the world list.

However, in 2024, Gaiman was accused of sexual assault and abuse by five women, who alleged he engaged in unwanted sex with them across various instances. While these allegations have been denied by the author, they've still resulted in fallout in his career. This includes Disney cancelling an adaptation of The Graveyard Book, and him stepping away from Good Omens...

Guillermo del Toro Pens Sweeping Tribute to Martin Scorsese’s ‘The Irishman,’ ‘The Work of a Master’
William Makepeace Thackeray
“It was in the reign of George III that the aforesaid personages lived and quarreled; good or bad, handsome or ugly, rich or poor, they are all equal now.” – William Makepeace Thackeray, The Luck of Barry Lyndon

A recurring motif in fable and parable is that of the man that loses, trades or sells his shadow in his earthly pursuits. The motif can be seemingly benign as in “Peter Pan, or the Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up,” or rather more troubling as in Von Chamisso’s “Peter Schlemihl,” or Hans Christian Andersen, but it is invariably loaded with existential and symbolic consequence.

For, what is a shadow? And, if we lose it, who will ever know? After all, a shadow does not have a life of its own, a will of its own, it weighs nothing and it does nothing — except, perhaps, anchor us to the ground, thus testifying,...

Aquaman Villain Ocean Master Gets Year of the Villain Treatment
Jim Dandy Dec 9, 2019

Ocean Master has been missing since fighting for Atlantis in the Drowned Earth. Does Lex Luthor give him a way back to power?

I think I'm going to miss these Year of the Villain one-shots. Usually, event tie-in one-offs are forgettable at best, and openly infuriating at worst, but the hit rate on these Year of the Villain books has been really good! The latest success from the line is Year of the Villain: Ocean Master.

Orm Marius has been out of the public eye since the Aquaman movie and Drowned Earth, the Justice League/Aquaman crossover that had ancient ocean gods attempting to get revenge on Atlantis by turning everyone into a fish monster. It was also largely cover for the Legion of Doom stealing the Totality from the Justice League, something that directly led to Luthor's power up at the hands of Perpetua, and then...

Supernatural Season 15 Episode 5 Review: Proverbs 17: 3
How the hell are they supposed to fight God, indeed!

Sam and Dean found themselves in a precarious situation on Supernatural Season 15 Episode 5 when God decided to play a few games (and bring back an old foe) to get the gun.

God needs to spend some time in the naughty corner -- after a good spanking or two.

So, I looked up Proverbs 17:3.

This is from the King James Version of the Bible:

"The fining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold: but the Lord trieth the hearts."

I'm not a Biblical scholar, so I had to do a little more research on the meaning to make sure it was in line with what I was thinking.

Pokémon Voice Actor Says Ash Ketchum’s Journey Is Far From Over
In case you missed it, something rather magical in the Pokémon world happened over the weekend.

After 22 years of painstaking sweat and tears, Pokémon Trainer Ash Ketchum has finally become a champion. The character, who has been the anime TV series’ central figure since its first airing in 1997, has been on countless adventures spanning more than two decades, having met hundreds of like-minded Trainers along the way.

While each episode often serves as a standalone story in itself, an overarching plot since the series’ beginning has detailed Ash’s ambitions to become a Pokémon League champion. Despite his and companion Pikachu’s best efforts, however, the Trainer has ultimately fallen at the last hurdle time and again, finishing as a runner-up in six tournaments. As of this past weekend, however, the 10-year old now officially has a title under his belt, having emerged victorious in the Alolan League.

With his ultimate goal complete,...

Trailer for Upcoming Korean Film “The Divine Fury” by Jason Kim
In 2017, one-film-old director Jason Kim made the buddy-cop action-comedy “Midnight Runners”. Starring Kang Ha-neul and Park Seo-joon in his first on-screen leading role, the anticipation for the film was lukewarm, with its trailers evidently targeting the female audience by showcasing its good-looking leading pair of actors. The film surprised at the box-office and went on to become the 4th highest-grossing film of 2017, freeing Park Seo-joon from the shackles of small screen dramas. While a sequel to the film is rumoured, the next project that both Park Seo-joon and Jason Kim join forces for instead is the supernatural action adventure film “The Divine Fury”.

Synopsis

When he was a child, Yong-Hoo’s father died in an accident. Yong-Hoo has distrusted and resented people since then. Now, Yong-Hoo is champion in martial arts. He meets Father Ahn. Father Ahn is also an exorcist. They get involved in a case and gaining divine powers,...

Film review: Golden Slumber (2018) by Noh Dong-seok
Does everything under the label of cinema has to be completely original? Of course not, because otherwise we would not be able to enjoy precious little thing called genre. Genre works on the terms of archetypes, and, for added bonus, if we are lucky, it innovates or even creates them. “Golden Slumber” directed by Noh Dong-seok works as a stellar example: it is hardly original, but it is well-made and fun to watch. After a successful stretch in theatres world-wide, especially in East Asia, it is being shown at Florence Korea Film Festival.

“Golden Slumber” is screening at Florence Korea Film Fest

It is a recognizable riff on the trope called “wrong man wanted”, with our unlikely hero Kim Gun-woo being framed for assassination of a leading presidential candidate. Otherwise, he is a happy-go-lucky delivery guy who became a minor celebrity for being a model citizen and saving a K-Pop star from mugging,...

Film Review: The Witness (2018) by Jo Kyu-jang
Not a year goes by without South Korea releasing a serial killer movie, even if in the recent years the better entries in the genre have been few and far inbetween. “The Witness”, by director Jo Kyu-jang, is one of the better films of the genre to come out of the country, albeit for slightly different reasons, featuring strong performances and an engaging storyline.

The Witness is screening at London Korean Film Festival

Late one night, when he returns home drunk after treating his colleagues to drinks, he hears screams outside the apartment building. The early 50s witnessed the emergence of the talented comedian Relangi Venkata Ramaiah who in tandem with another funster Ramana Reddy earned name and fame by portraying comic roles. Lee Byung-hun Talks Knives, Westerns and Magnificent Seven | Exclusive
Lee Byung-hun
Byung-hun Lee may not be a household name in America, but that is sure to change. The South Korean actor, model, and singer is a megastar in Asia. He started out on Korean television in the early nineties before making the leap to the big screen. His break out role was Joint Security Area in 2000. It catapulted him to stardom and became the top grossing film in Korean history.

Lee had a string of Asian hits before Hollywood came calling. He starred alongside Josh Hartnett in the 2009 Vietnamese thriller, I Come with the Rain. That role led to his American debut as the ass-kicking ninja, Storm Shadow, in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. The overall film didn't remotely meet expectations, but Byung-hun Lee was a standout. He was phenomenal as Storm Shadow. That performance put western audiences on notice that Korea's box office king was crossing over.
