Superhost is the third film by writer/director Brandon Christensen (Still/Born) and the first that wasn’t co-written with Colin Minihan. It’s also the first that doesn’t revolve around parenthood. How well has he managed to change things up? And can he bring something new to a pair of well-worn plots, the Airbnb from hell and YouTubers getting more of a story than they bargained for?
Teddy and Claire are co-hosts of the YouTube channel Superhost! as well as being a couple off-screen. He’s even planning to propose to her when they film their next segment.
But all is not well in the world of Airbnb reviews. Their subscriber count has been dropping due to their unsensational content. They rent a remote cabin only to find that the access code has been changed.

Kathrine Narducci (Cruise) is set for a recurring role opposite Vincent D’Onofrio in Godfather of Harlem, Epix’s straight-to-series crime drama from Narcos co-creator Chris Brancato and Paul Eckstein and ABC Signature Studios. Written by Brancato and Eckstein, Godfather of Harlem is inspired by the story of infamous crime boss Bumpy Johnson (Forest Whitaker), who in the early 1960s returned from 10 years in prison to find the neighborhood he once ruled in shambles. With the streets controlled by the Italian mob, Bumpy must take on the Genovese crime family to regain control. During the brutal battle, he forms an alliance with radical preacher Malcolm X (Nigél Thatch) – catching Malcolm’s political rise in the crosshairs of social upheaval and a mob war that threatens to tear the city apart. Narducci will play Olympia Gigante, the long-suffering wife of mafia boss Vincent ‘Chin’ Gigante (D’Onofrio). Fiercely protective of her husband,...

The thriller What Keeps You Alive will release on home entertainment formats, in early December. This film, from director Colin Minihan (It Stains the Sands Red), is his third collaboration with actress Brittany Allen. This time around, two women celebrated their anniversary on a remote island. Here, the two married women turn on each other, in the worst celebration ever. In the United States, Shout Factory will handle the film's release, while in Canada Mongrel Media is showing this title on DVD. A preview of both releases is hosted here. What Keeps You Alive had its World Premiere earlier this year, at the SXSW Film Festival. In an earlier interview, Minihan said of the film and its inclusion of a psychopath: "I feel like this movie is just a shocking, tightly woven thriller, that dabbles in horror and offers a unique take at the psychopath sub-genre (Hollywood News)." There are...

What if you found out that the person you married isn't who you thought they were? Filmmaker Colin Minihan explores that harrowing question in his new movie, What Keeps You Alive, which follows a violent one-year anniversary between Jules (Brittany Allen) and Jackie (Hannah Emily Anderson).
With IFC Midnight releasing What Keeps You Alive in Us theaters and on VOD platforms beginning August 24th, Daily Dead recently caught up with Minihan and co-star Allen to discuss the unconventional casting process for the role of Jackie (which was originally intended to be a male character), filming near Allen's family's cottage, and the movie's exploration of how well you can really know the one you love the most.
Colin, because I know you wrote and directed this movie, where did you come up with the idea for this?

Nsfw What Keeps You Alive Trailer Will Slay You
"My dad, he used to say to me: You only kill what keeps you alive." This moral hunter's credo takes on sinister overtones when spoken by Jackie (Hannah Emily Anderson) to her lover Jules (Brittany Allen) in the brutal Red Band trailer for writer/director Colin Minihan's What Keeps You Alive. The film was scooped up for distribution by IFC Midnight following an impactful debut at SXSW last March and can now be seen in theaters in Los Angeles and New York or on VOD. The film's premise seems as straight-forward as it is nerve-shredding:
"How much can you really know about another person? The unsettling truth that even those closest to us can harbor hidden dimensions drives this thrillingly unpredictable, blood-stained fear trip. Jackie (Anderson) and Jules (Allen) are a couple celebrating their one year anniversary at a secluded cabin in the woods belonging to Jackie's family. From the moment they arrive,...

As if the lineup for Arrow Video FrightFest 2018 wasn't impressive enough, the festival has added two films to its slate: David Barker's Pimped (touted as an erotic thriller with a touch of Hitchcock and Brian De Palma appeal) and screenings of the restoration of John Carpenter's classic Halloween! The guest lineup includes Barbara Crampton, Leigh Whannell, Shaked Berenson (Tales of Halloween), Issa López (Tigers are not Afraid), composer Fabio Frizzi, and many more!
Press Release: Two extra films have been added to the record-breaking 2018 line-up: Pimped is director David Barker’s modern transgressive erotic thriller, an Hitchcocktail of elevated suspense and shock in the revered style of Brian De Palma, And If you’ve never seen John Carpenter’s Halloween on the big screen, now’s your best chance. The inclusion of this 4K restoration needs no explanation in anticipation of a new Michael Myers slasher being released in October.

Thriller What Keeps You Alive, by director Colin Minihan, has gone to IFC Midnight for the U.S. market, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
The Canadian indie — from the director of Grave Encounters and the offbeat zombie pic It Stains the Sands Red — stars Hannah Emily Anderson and Brittany Allen as a same-sex married couple facing venomous betrayals as they celebrate their one-year anniversary.
The embattled couple face a merciless fight for their lives when they find themselves pitted against the most unexpected of adversaries: each other. Anderson and Allen earlier co-starred in Jigsaw.

This year’s SXSW Film Festival kept this writer plenty busy, with a ton of great genre movies that were part of their Midnighters programming slate, and in many cases, there were even some that screened outside the genre-friendly section. Here are my thoughts on a terror-filled trinity of films that I had the opportunity to check out while in Austin over the last week: Colin Minihan’s surprising psychological thriller What Keeps You Alive, the newly revealed sequel Unfriended: Dark Web, and Jeremy Dyson and Andy Nyman’s Ghost Stories.
What Keeps You Alive: Last year, Colin Minihan really impressed me with his unusual zombie effort, It Stains the Sands Red, and less than 12 months later, he left my proverbial jaw on the floor with What Keeps You Alive, a shocking and intimately crafted thriller that effectively proves you can never really know everything about the people you love.

What Keeps You Alive is the latest horror film from director Colin Minihan (It Stains the Sands Red, 2017). Minihan has re-teamed with actress Brittany Allen to bring horror fans a mysterious tale of a relationship gone sour. What Keeps You Alive also stars: Hannah Emily Anderson (Jigsaw) and Martha MacIsaac. A teaser trailer has just been released for the film; it can be found here. As well, What Keeps You Alive is slated to have its World Premiere at the SXSW Film Festival, in Austin, Texas. The teaser pieces together a number of scenes. There is a boat race, a bit of hunting and a dinner party. Later, a character performs some illicit surgery on another. Anesthetic might have been nice. And, everything ends with bloodspray. Or, is that red wine? The World Premiere begins this week. On March 10th, What Keeps You Alive will show as part of SXSW's Midnighters program.

Postpartum depression is a very tricky subject matter to approach for any movie, not to mention a horror movie. Hell, even doctors struggle to tackle the subject in real life, so when it comes to reel life filmmakers have to be Very careful not only to belittle its effect on mothers, or to turn a serious mental health condition into a excuse to demonise a character. 2017 has been a strong year for horror—indie or otherwise—which means it has been tough keeping up with everything that has been released over the last eight-plus months. Here are my thoughts on a pair of films that I recently had the opportunity to watch, Michael Walker’s meta slasher Cut Shoot Kill and the zombie-themed It Stains the Sands Red from Colin Minihan.
Cut Shoot Kill: The biggest thing I look for whenever I go into any movie is whether or not the director at hand has any surprises in store for me as a viewer. And while Cut Shoot Kill may not seem all that revolutionary upon first glance, I must tip my hat to writer/director Walker, who did an admirable job subverting my expectations with his “movie within a movie,” often finding clever ways to blur the lines between fact and fiction for his ambitious story.

Horror Channel FrightFest takes place in London this weekend. Here's our pick of films to look out for...
Summer’s almost over and what better way to welcome in the spooky season than by hiding from the heat in a darkened room, with five days of wall-to-wall horror? Yep, it’s August Bank Holiday and that means the 18th annual London Horror Channel FrightFest is upon us. For some, this is a familiar pilgrimage. Veterans will be used to bloodshot eyes, numbness in the spine, a lack of nutrition and an acute anxiousness every time there’s a loud noise. For others, it may be their first visit and these are things to look forward to. Either way, FrightFest promises probably the biggest, purest, uncut dose of horror you can endure without going insane, complete with special guests, world premieres, live events and at least a couple of parties.

Currently on VOD and in theaters is Colin Minihan’s dusty zombie road movie, It Stains the Sands Red, and to mark the occasion, Daily Dead was thrilled to catch up earlier this week with the film’s star, Brittany Allen, who spends most of the movie being chased down by a single zombie while traversing an unforgiving desert terrain.
During the interview, Allen discussed what she enjoyed about her character, who transforms into something of an anti-hero by the end of It Stains the Sands Red, the challenges she faced while shooting, creating “chemistry” with a zombie, and she even briefly chatted about her experiences collaborating with the Spierig Brothers on the upcoming Saw sequel, Jigsaw, which arrives in theaters this October.

Now on VOD and in theaters from Dark Sky Films is Colin Minihan’s It Stains the Sands Red, a sun-drenched zombie survival tale that features Brittany Allen as a woman named Molly who is being stalked by a lone zombie (Juan Riedinger) as she traverses the unforgiving desert landscape in search of hope after all hell breaks loose in Las Vegas.
Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to speak with Minihan about his approach to It Stains the Sands Red, and he discussed the challenges of making a zombie film that audiences haven’t already seen time and time again, working with Allen, and more.
Congrats on the film, Colin. I'd love to hear about what inspired you to take this approach in particular, because it’s so different than most zombie stories these days. Did you and [co-writer] Stuart [Ortiz] recognize as you were working on the script that it...

A Las Vegas stripper attempts to escape the zombie apocalypse in Colin Minihan's low-budget It Stains the Sands Red, a film whose eponymous "it" may not refer to the undead menace we're expecting. All My Children's Brittany Allen is a solo protagonist here, bucking the genre's customary ensemble format, and that's not the only way Minihan's picture (co-written with Stuart Ortiz) strays from the usual script. Genre fans will likely have a hard time coming to terms with this tonally confused and sometimes grating film, whose commercial prospects are limited despite the appeals it makes to some underserved audiences.

With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’ve taken it upon ourselves to highlight the titles that have recently hit platforms. Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.
City of Tiny Lights (Pete Travis)
Small-time private detective Tommy Akhtar (Riz Ahmed) has all the swagger of a hard-boiled snoop: leather jacket on his shoulders and cigarette in his mouth, leaning against London architecture in the darkened night. His office resides above some shops, he makes friendly with local convenience store owner Mrs. Elbaz (Myriam Acharki), and asks new clients where they found him because he’s not advertising in the paper.

*full disclosure: an online screener was provided by the film's publicity arm. Director: Colin Minihan. Writers: Colin Minihan, Stuart Ortiz. Cast: Brittany Allen, Juan Riedinger, Merwin Mondesir It Stains the Sands Red is the latest thriller from the Vicious Brothers. Colin Minihan (Grave Encounters) and Stuart Ortiz try to breath some life into the zombie sub-genre, with this title. However, the long zombie chase in the desert gets a bit tiresome and repetitive, after awhile. The film's tone is overly sad. Meanwhile, there are almost no redeemable characters on-screen, outside of central character Molly (Brittany Allen). Even Molly has a long list of vices. A bit slow, It Stains the Sands Red offers minimal conflict and action, as well. It is not all bad. But, It Stains the Sands Red will entertain only the most patient zombie film fans. The film begins with one of the film's only wide shots.

The first trailer for Jigsaw is here. Aka Saw 8, it has been six years since a Saw film has debuted. The film is set for a late October release. And, the film's first trailer shows several people trapped in various torture rooms. Several characters must face their flaws, or face the saw. Tobin Bell is attached to the film. Though, the character Jigsaw has died several films ago. Laura Vandervoort ("Bitten), Brittany Allen (It Stains the Sands Red) and Hannah Emily Anderson (Lizzie Borden Took an Axe) also star in this latest outing. The release details, for Jigsaw, are here. The synopsis mentions an apprentice. Still, John Kramer's DNA is turning up on victims. So, who is still killing in Jigsaw's name? Further story details remain elusive. Though, the trailer does focus more on action, than a narrative. Characters find themselves in all sorts of dire situations. In one scene,...

Canadian writer/director/editing duo the Vicious Brothers made a splash when they arrived on the scene in 2011 with Grave Encounters (review) and since then, they've kept themselves busy producing a sequel as well as writing and directing a number of other projects.
