I have mixed feelings on fan films. I’d prefer to see indie filmmakers invest their resources in an original concept rather than someone else’s intellectual property, but I also understand the reality that content with an established fanbase guarantees more engagement. Moreover, when beloved properties like A Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th become entangled in ongoing legal disputes, fan films can sate viewers’ hunger for more.

Even if a new Elm Street movie is produced with Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger, it’s highly unlikely to acknowledge the events of New Nightmare, given its blurring of the lines between fiction and reality. (Freddy vs Jason ignored it as well.) YouTuber-turned-writer/director Cecil Laird teamed with producer Vincente Disanti — the filmmaker behind the popular Friday the 13th fan film Never Hike Alone — to fill that void with Dylan’s New Nightmare: A Nightmare on Elm Street Fan Film.

One full year after the start of production, Bloody Disgusting has learned that the team over at Womp Stomp Films have completed principal photography for Never Hike Alone 2.

The team is celebrating the reaching of this milestone with the release of new images that feature an in-depth look at the hotly anticipated film, a sequel to the hit fan film from 2017.

Hughes was a child star who began his acting career in 1989 as Gage Creed in Pet Sematary when he was only three years old. Hughes continued to get a steady flow of roles throughout the ‘90s, but he may be most well known for playing Dylan Porter in Wes Craven’s New Nightmare. Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives writer and director Tom McLoughlin is so eager to direct another installment of the franchise, he's already written a screenplay for the next movie. This would not be a terrible idea for fans, as Jason Lives is one of the best installments of the movie series. The movie is notable for resurrecting Jason Voorhees following his death at the end of the fourth installment, The Final Chapter. Because fans were unhappy about the lack of Jason in the next movie, Paramount signed on McLoughlin to bring back Jason however he saw fit, resulting in the highly-beloved sixth movie. Fast forward to now, and McLoughlin is hoping to capture that lightning in a bottle once again.

The creators of the Friday the 13th fan film Never Hike Alone are teasing new sequels with Thom Mathews as Tommy Jarvis. Mathews famously portrayed the character in Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives, which is considered to be one of the best installments of the series. He reprised the role in Never Hike Alone when the fan film debuted on YouTube in 2017, meeting his old nemesis Jason Voorhees once again. The ending left room for a sequel, leading to fans hoping for an official follow-up movie to continue the story. On Monday, the Womp Stomp Films Twitter account tweeted that they are going to bring back Mathews for more fan films, with more news on the next installment to come in a few months.

The Friday the 13th reunion slasher movie 13 Fanboy has added yet another fan favorite to the cast, as actress Adrienne King has been confirmed for a cameo. Directed and co-written by Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning star Deborah Voorhees, 13 Fanboy is a passion project made specifically for Jason fans. With a very meta story, the movie will be about a homicidal psychopath murdering legends from the horror genre, mostly from the Friday the 13th series. A bulk of the cast will all be playing themselves, and there will even be multiple Jason actors in the movie who just wind up as victims this time.

There's no telling when we'll see another Friday the 13th movie in theaters, as the legal battle over the rights to the series has been reinstated. After reviewing a lawsuit against Victor Miller, the screenwriter of the original movie, a judge ruled in favor of the writer over franchise owner Sean Cunningham. In response, Cunningham and production company Horror Inc. appealed the decision, only to retract it for technical reasons. They were given a due date of April 12 to reinstate the appeal, and Cunningham's legal team reportedly met the deadline. Unless the two sides are able to agree upon a settlement amount in the near future, this will keep Jason out of theaters indefinitely, as no studio is going to begin production on a new movie until the legalities are officially sorted out.

If you want to own the popular Friday the 13th fan film Never Hike Alone on Blu-ray and missed your opportunity before, a second Indiegogo campaign is giving you another chance. The studio behind the movie, Womp Stomp Films, has launched a Second Edition Never Hike Alone Blu-ray campaign which is now live. This will not be a DVD combo pack, only including a Blu-ray disc and digital rewards. Bonus features on the Blu-ray will include theatrical 5.1 surround sound, behind the scenes documentary, audio commentary, subtitles, trailers, and an exclusive case with new artwork. Aiming for a $13,000 goal, funding raised from the campaign will go directly towards printing the physical media, along with packaging and shipping costs. Leftover funds will then be used to produce the filmmakers' next project, Pathosis, and if the campaign reaches $30,000, an additional "Secret Project" will also be developed.

Every year, the celluloid celebration features 35mm screenings of beloved horror films, and this year is certainly no exception, as the lineup for the all-day horror movie marathon includes Scanners, Jaws, Psycho, and John Carpenter's The Thing.

We are about a month away from Shriekfest Film Festival 2018, and the first three films in the lineup have been announced, including the world premiere of Echoes of Fear, the Shriekfest premiere of Sick for Toys, and Never Hike Alone featuring a certain masked killer.

Reminder: Shriekfest will be on both coasts for the second time ever, with the first leg of the festival starting on October 4th in Los Angeles and the second leg on November 3rd in Orlando, Florida.
