‘Never Hike Alone: Ghosts in the Fog’ Teaser Trailer – First Ever Animated ‘Friday the 13th’ Fan Film
Image
The team behind the incredibly popular live action Never Hike Alone fan films is back with Never Hike Alone: Ghosts in the Fog, the first ever animated Friday the 13th fan film.

In the new Friday the 13th fan project from Womp Stomp Films, witness Jason Voorhees in haunting 2D animation, brought to life by Mako Animation and Armáss Productions.

Set years before Never Hike Alone, a group of hikers get lost in a mysterious fog and stumble into the cursed grounds of Camp Crystal Lake… where the Ghost of Crystal Lake awaits.

Womp Stomp Films previews the 10-minute fan film, “The film features 2D animation with 3D environments by Mako Animation, presented in black and white with bold splashes of red and yellow—stylistically inspired by Sin City.” The team also teases, “Ghosts in the Fog will feature 3 unique animated kill sequences that push the limits of gore in...

5 Horror Franchises That Should Go Christmas Next
Image
There was something special about seeing Art the Clown kill people in a Santa suit, wasn’t there? The visual subversion of what is usually a holly, jolly, spirit of Christmas elicits reactions few can manage. Then there was all the glorious violence. But what impressed me most about Terrifier 3 (other than its massive box office) is the fact that it doesn’t overly rely on Christmas for its structure. The film taught us that including the holiday doesn’t mean it has to overpower the narrative. Christmas simply serves as a way to show colorful visuals, play familiar songs to establish a tone, and expectations to easily subvert. Because of that, it manages to be a Christmas movie while also entirely standing on its own as an entry in the world of Terrifier. But it got me thinking: what other horror franchises should take the holiday plunge?

I...

Miko Hughes Returns for Fan-Made New Nightmare Sequel Dylan's New Nightmare
Image
The horror film Wes Craven's New Nightmare has been given a fan-made sequel, and it's now available to watch for free online.

Back in 1994, Wes Craven's New Nightmare was released, putting a meta-horror spin on the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise. Franchise star Heather Langenkamp played herself in the movie, pursued by a real-life demon that's taken the form of Freddy Krueger. Former child star Miko Hughes, also known for playing Gage in the original Pet Sematary, co-starred as Dylan Porter, Langenkamp's son. Following a successful crowdfunding campaign, Hughes returns as Dylan in Dylan's New Nightmare: A Nightmare on Elm Street Fan Film, and the movie is streaming on YouTube.

‘Dylan’s New Nightmare’ – Fan Film Sequel to ‘New Nightmare’ Starring Miko Hughes Is Worth Your Time
Image
I have mixed feelings on fan films. I’d prefer to see indie filmmakers invest their resources in an original concept rather than someone else’s intellectual property, but I also understand the reality that content with an established fanbase guarantees more engagement. Moreover, when beloved properties like A Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th become entangled in ongoing legal disputes, fan films can sate viewers’ hunger for more.

Even if a new Elm Street movie is produced with Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger, it’s highly unlikely to acknowledge the events of New Nightmare, given its blurring of the lines between fiction and reality. (Freddy vs Jason ignored it as well.) YouTuber-turned-writer/director Cecil Laird teamed with producer Vincente Disanti — the filmmaker behind the popular Friday the 13th fan film Never Hike Alone — to fill that void with Dylan’s New Nightmare: A Nightmare on Elm Street Fan Film.

How Freddy Krueger Fan Film Director Convinced New Nightmare Star to Return
Image
Dylan's New Nightmare director Cecil Laird reveals how he convinced Miko Hughes to return to the franchise after nearly 30 years. Hughes was a child star who began his acting career in 1989 as Gage Creed in Pet Sematary when he was only three years old. Hughes continued to get a steady flow of roles throughout the ‘90s, but he may be most well known for playing Dylan Porter in Wes Craven’s New Nightmare. The meta film, which many consider to be a precursor to Scream, sees Heather Langenkamp help her young son Dylan prevent Freddy Krueger from entering the real world. Nearly 30 years have passed since New Nightmare hit theaters, but Hughes has returned for a fan-made follow-up that takes place decades after its predecessor.

While speaking exclusively with Screen Rant at Mad Monster Party Arizona, Laird spoke on how he got Hughes, who has only had minor roles in projects since the ‘90s,...

‘Fear the Invisible Man’ and the Importance of Public Domain Monsters
Image
Some movie monsters have become so ubiquitous in popular culture that they feel more like omnipresent myths than characters from specific stories. Ask any young child and they’ll probably recognize Frankenstein and Dracula without ever having touched a Stoker or Shelley novel, with these characters inhabiting our collective imagination through what can only be described as cultural osmosis. This natural process obviously goes against the corporate interests of studios like Universal, and that’s why the company continues to invest millions of dollars into licensing deals in order to keep their monster movies in the spotlight as the “definitive” versions of these stories.

While it’s only fair that creators should get to monetize their hard work, corporations turning creativity into a business has resulted in a media landscape that favors brands instead of ideas. I was recently reminded of this weaponization of intellectual property when I watched the...

Trailer: An Obsessed Fan Takes His Love of Friday The 13th Too Far in 13 Fanboy
Image
One of the horror movies I’m most looking forward to for the remainder of 2021 is 13 Fanboy, co-written and directed by Deborah Voorhees, one of the stars of my beloved Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning. The film, about an obsessed Friday the 13th fan who takes his love of the series too far, now has a trailer. Check it out!

"An obsessed fan stalks his favorite actors from the Friday the 13th films and beyond. As a child, Kelsie Voorhees witnesses the murder of her grandmother, Friday the 13th actress Deborah Voorhees, at the hands of a crazed fanboy. As an adult, she discovers her grandmother isn’t the only victim and the killer is still out there searching for his favorite Friday the 13th cast members and iconic scream queens to slaughter, mirroring his idol Jason Voorhees, as he still can't seem to separate the...

Watch: New Feature-Length Friday The 13th Fan Movie Voorhees
Jason Voorhees is famously unstoppable and always comes back for more, despite multiple grisly ends. But of late, he’s tangling with his fiercest adversary yet: lawyers. The long-running legal saga as to who owns the rights to the original Friday the 13th rumbles on with no end in sight. Back in 2018, a judge ruled that the all concepts within the original screenplay belong to writer Victor Miller. Current rights holders Sean Cunningham and Horror Inc. appealed, but the case appears to be in purgatory as Covid-19 continues to gum up the legal system.

Through adversity comes triumph, though, and fans have stepped up to the plate to unofficially carry on Jason’s rampage. A month ago, we saw the very impressive Never Hike in the Snow by Womp Stomp Films, the sequel to their 2017 effort Never Hike Alone. On Halloween, meanwhile, Wet Paint Pictures released their own take on the franchise,...

Watch: Jason Returns In Awesome Friday The 13th Fan Film
Friday the 13th remains in legal limbo as the appeals process rumbles on with no apparent end in sight. The years-long battle between Victor Miller and Sean Cunningham means it’s now over a decade since we saw a new movie in the iconic horror franchise, but fortunately, some extremely talented fans have stepped up to the plate to deliver a series of incredible movies that bring Jason Voorhees back to life.

At the front of the pack is Womp Stomp Films, who released the impressive Never Hike Alone in 2017, a cool-as-hell 54-minute fan effort that saw series star Thom Matthews return to the role of Tommy Jarvis. Now, the sequel to it has just landed in the form of Never Hike in the Snow. It’s available for free, is 30 minutes long and well worth checking out.

Once again, Womp Stomp Films have elevated what a fan-made production can be,...

Friday the 13th Returns to Theaters for 40th Anniversary This October
Image
Horror fans, specifically lovers of Jason Voorhees, have been given a new way to celebrate four decades of the franchise. In October, moviegoers can experience a newly remastered version of the original slasher that started it all. The Friday the 13th 40th Anniversary event will be making its way to movie theaters across the U.S. for a two-night engagement.

Friday the 13th, in its newly restored version, will play on both Sunday, October 4 and Wednesday, October 7. Showings will be at 7 p.m. local time on both dates. Watch: Jason Returns In Awesome Trailer For Friday The 13th Fan Film
As the Friday the 13th legal saga shows no signs of concluding, fans could be forgiven for losing hope. In September 2018, a judge ruled that the rights to the original film’s screenplay and all concepts within it belong to Victor Miller. Sean Cunningham and Horror Inc. appealed, arguing that the court’s ruling would not just negatively impact them, but could potentially have extremely damaging ramifications for the entire industry. Right now, the case appears to be in purgatory as the Covid-19 pandemic seems to have delayed the judge’s verdict, and so we wait.

This is very annoying for gorehounds who simply want to see Jason Voorhees slicing and dicing his way through a load of young actors in sadistic and creative ways. Fortunately, though, fans have stepped in to fill the gap, most impressively in 2017 when Womp Stomp Films released Never Hike Alone, a cool-as-hell 54-minute fan...

Never Hike in the Snow Trailer Has Jason Surviving Winter in Friday the 13th Fan Film
Image
A trailer has been released by Womp Stomp Films for this fall's Never Hike in the Snow, the prequel to the popular Friday the 13th fan film Never Hike Alone. Originally released in 2017, Never Hike Alone was written and directed by filmmaker Vincente Disanti. It starred Andrew Leighty as a lone hiker who winds up coming face to face with Jason Voorhees while exploring the abandoned campgrounds of Crystal Lake. It has since gotten over 1.6 million views since first going online, and follow-up projects had also been announced by Disanti.

Now, we have a look at the first trailer for Never Hike in the Snow, which is set three months before the events of Never Hike Alone. This time, the story will follow the strange disappearance of Crystal Lake resident Mark Hill (Courtlan Gordon), who "went for a hike in the dead of winter and never came home." The local law,...

The Houses October Built (2014)
Michael Myers Vs. Dr. Loomis' Grandson: Halloween Fan Film Halloween Night Is Streaming for Free
The Houses October Built (2014)
The Loomis family isn't through with Michael Myers just yet, as Dr. Loomis' grandson looks to finish what his grandfather started in an all-new 60-minute Halloween fan film. Called Halloween Night, the movie comes to us after a successful crowdfunding campaign to raise its budget. Zach Salazar wrote the screenplay, and in addition to directing the movie, Jp DeStefano also stars as John Loomis, the grandson of Donald Pleasence's Sam Loomis from the first six Halloween movies. Ainura DeStefano also stars as Samantha Loomis with John Schilling under the mask as Michael Myers.

Like the theatrical Halloween movie series, Halloween Night takes place on, well, Halloween night in the town of Haddonfield, Illinois. According to the synopsis, the "infamous Halloween Night of 1978 is all but a memory for the people of Haddonfield as the new generation of townspeople look to put the town's marred legacy behind them." And, also...

Friday the 13th Fan Film Never Hike in the Snow Wraps, New Photos Released
Chris Tucker and Ice Cube in Friday (1995)
Never Hike in the Snow: A Friday the 13th Fan Film, the winter-set follow-up to the popular Friday the 13th fan film Never Hike Alone, has wrapped principal photography. Post production for the new fan film is now under way, and an official release date is expected to be announced soon by the production company Womp Stomp Films. Because no "official" Friday the 13th movie will be hitting theaters anytime soon with the rights still tied up in a legal battle, these kinds of fan films are helping to fill the void in the meantime and have proven to be very popular with Jason Voorhees fans.

Big Friday the 13th fans can also expect to see some familiar faces in Never Hike in the Snow. Those who've seen Never Hike Alone will know franchise star Thom Mathews reprised his Jason Lives role as Tommy Jarvis in the first fan film,...

Friday the 13th Legal Battle May Finally End Next Summer
Sean Cunningham 2015
As all of us Friday the 13th and Jason Voorhees fans are all too aware of at this point in time, there is an agonizing, seemingly endless Friday the 13th legal battle going on behind the scenes of the series between original Friday the 13th director Sean S. Cunningham and original Friday the 13th screenwriter Victor Miller over just who owns the rights to not only the franchise, but the character of Jason.

Specifically, Lerner tweets out some hope.

For anyone unaware, the director of the original movie, Sean Cunningham, sued screenwriter Victor Miller when the latter utilized a provision of U.S. copyright law which allows him to reclaim the rights after 35 years. After a judge initially ruled in Miller's favor, Cunningham and his company appealed, keeping the rights battle going for the foreseeable future. With no near end in sight to the lawsuit, at least two filmmakers will be releasing anticipated Friday the 13th fan films on the same day: Sept. 13, which is, of course, a Friday.

From director Cody Faulk, the fan film Voorhees promises the most brutal version of Jason Voorhees yet. The story follows a group of dangerous criminals with hostages...

Legendary horror actor and stuntman, Kane Hodder.
Jason Voorhees Actor Kane Hodder Pitches Idea for 13th Friday the 13th Movie
Legendary horror actor and stuntman, Kane Hodder.
Friday the 13th franchise star Kane Hodder hasn't played Jason Voorhees on the big screen since 2002's Jason X, but the legendary horror star says he's ready to play the character once again if he gets the opportunity. Additionally, Hodder also has some ideas for the next Friday the 13th movie, which would see many other fan favorite stars returning to the series as well.

The thinking behind this is that longtime fans of the series have watched each of the installments so many times over the past couple decades, and it would be fun as a viewer to see many faces they recognize in the next movie. Kane Hodder says this.

"I just think that when they do do a 13th one, it certainly couldn't hurt to bring me back as Jason, unless it's in 20 years, maybe. But it certainly couldn't hurt the success of the movie, I don't think,...

Called Jason Never Dies, the sequel would bring back Jason from the lake once again for a new killing spree set in the modern day. Although it would be considered a follow-up to Jason Lives, McLoughlin had remained very private about the details of his new story. Now, in a new interview with Bloody Disgusting, McLoughlin has revealed some new details on what he has in mind, which includes giving the story a winter setting.

In 1986, McLoughlin delivered his contribution to the Friday the 13th franchise with the sixth movie Jason Lives. The sequel has since established itself with a strong cult following as one of the most popular installments of the series. It starred...

New Friday the 13th Sequel Script Has Been Written by Jason Lives Director
Tom McLoughlin
Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives writer and director Tom McLoughlin is so eager to direct another installment of the franchise, he's already written a screenplay for the next movie. This would not be a terrible idea for fans, as Jason Lives is one of the best installments of the movie series. The movie is notable for resurrecting Jason Voorhees following his death at the end of the fourth installment, The Final Chapter. Because fans were unhappy about the lack of Jason in the next movie, Paramount signed on McLoughlin to bring back Jason however he saw fit, resulting in the highly-beloved sixth movie. Fast forward to now, and McLoughlin is hoping to capture that lightning in a bottle once again.

Speaking on the podcast The Pod and the Pendulum, McLoughlin spoke about his desire to helm the next movie after finally coming up with a new take on the material.

Jason Lives Actor Returning as Tommy Jarvis in Friday the 13th Fan Film Sequels
Vincente DiSanti and Drew Leighty in Never Hike Alone (2017)
The creators of the Friday the 13th fan film Never Hike Alone are teasing new sequels with Thom Mathews as Tommy Jarvis. Mathews famously portrayed the character in Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives, which is considered to be one of the best installments of the series. He reprised the role in Never Hike Alone when the fan film debuted on YouTube in 2017, meeting his old nemesis Jason Voorhees once again. The ending left room for a sequel, leading to fans hoping for an official follow-up movie to continue the story. On Monday, the Womp Stomp Films Twitter account tweeted that they are going to bring back Mathews for more fan films, with more news on the next installment to come in a few months.

"To hell with the lawsuit, who's ready for the Friday the 13th show down of the century? Ghost Jason vs Tommy Jarvis will happen...

James Sweet
By way of free-to-watch Friday the 13th fan films, indie filmmakers are doing their best to keep Jason's machete warm for him while he awaits his return to the big screen. Now joining the fray is the upcoming fan film Jason Rising from creators James Sweet, Karl Whinnery, and Robert Blanche. The project is now currently building its budget by way of crowdfunding on Indiegogo, and an impressive sneak peek trailer has been released to give fans an idea of what to expect from the movie.

Friday the 13th Reunion Movie 13 Fanboy Adds Original Final Girl Adrienne King
Adrienne King in Vendredi 13 (1980)
The Friday the 13th reunion slasher movie 13 Fanboy has added yet another fan favorite to the cast, as actress Adrienne King has been confirmed for a cameo. Directed and co-written by Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning star Deborah Voorhees, 13 Fanboy is a passion project made specifically for Jason fans. With a very meta story, the movie will be about a homicidal psychopath murdering legends from the horror genre, mostly from the Friday the 13th series. A bulk of the cast will all be playing themselves, and there will even be multiple Jason actors in the movie who just wind up as victims this time.

Fans of the franchise remember King fondly as the very first final girl of the series. As camp counselor Alice Hardy, King's character managed to survive the first Friday the 13th killing spree. Of course, the killer in the original movie wasn't Jason,...

New Friday the 13th Movie Isn't Any Closer as Legal Battle Continues
There's no telling when we'll see another Friday the 13th movie in theaters, as the legal battle over the rights to the series has been reinstated. After reviewing a lawsuit against Victor Miller, the screenwriter of the original movie, a judge ruled in favor of the writer over franchise owner Sean Cunningham. In response, Cunningham and production company Horror Inc. appealed the decision, only to retract it for technical reasons. They were given a due date of April 12 to reinstate the appeal, and Cunningham's legal team reportedly met the deadline. Unless the two sides are able to agree upon a settlement amount in the near future, this will keep Jason out of theaters indefinitely, as no studio is going to begin production on a new movie until the legalities are officially sorted out.

The chain of events that led us to this point began in 2016, when Victor Miller pursued a...

Deborah Voorhees
Former Friday the 13th Stars Get Slaughtered in 13 Fanboy Trailer
Deborah Voorhees
Given her last name, you could say Deborah Voorhees was destined to have a career in horror movies. She became a favorite for fans of the genre beginning with her appearance in Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning back in 1985, which featured a scene of her character being stabbed through both eyes with a pair of garden shears. In recent years, Voorhees has been working on her own independent films under her Voorhees Films banner, and her next project will have fans of the franchise excited. Called 13 Fanboy, the indie flick will tell the story of an obsessed fan stalking the stars of the Friday the 13th movie series, killing them in similar ways their characters were murdered by Jason Voorhees (and Roy Burns) on screen.
