American Idol favorites Slater Nalley and Thunderstorm Artis were eliminated from the singing competition on Monday. The two singer-songwriters went home after 19 million viewers cast their votes during the second night of Disney performances on ABC. John Foster, Jamal Roberts, and Breanna Nix advanced to the Season 23 finale on May 18.
Each contestant performed two songs, with Slater taking on "You've Got a Friend in Me" from Toy Story and "Born to Be Wild" from D3: The Mighty Ducks. Lionel Richie told the 18-year-old from Atlanta, "You've come a long way, son," as Carrie Underwood and Luke Bryan praised the teenager's song choices.
Slater's audition was one of the season's most memorable. He had Carrie in tears when he performed "Traces of You," which he wrote in honor of his high school English teacher's son who was killed eight years prior. "Every single person that hears that can fill in that...

Slater Nalley is one step closer to being the winner of American Idol Season 23.
The 18-year-old high school student from Atlanta advanced to the Top 20 during the Easter Sunday episode that focused on "Songs of Faith." After host Ryan Seacrest made the announcement, Slater performed "Soulshine" on ABC's reality TV show in front of the studio audience and judges Luke Bryan, Carrie Underwood, and Lionel Richie. Watch the video above.
Following the performance, Lionel recalled telling Slater, "Don't get psyched out by all of those other amazing voices. Just stay in your lane and be solid. And what did you do? You got here because you stayed in your lane, and you're solid."
Carrie chimed in, "Slater, I mean, you've got the goods. I feel like you've very comfortable with that song. You were at ease behind that guitar. Just keep doing you, man. That's all I got. It's great.

Tonight on American Idol — the top 62 contestants continued their Hollywood Week experience in the Showstoppers Round, where they took the stage once more to prove they've got the vocal prowess and charisma to become America's next superstar. Like last week's Idol Arena, each contestant performed in front of judges Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie, and then had to wait until the end of the night to find out who advanced in the competition. Unlike last week, they got zero feedback. The two-hour episode aired Sunday, April 6 (8 p.m. Et/Pt) with Ryan Seacrest hosting.
There were certainly plenty of showstoppers throughout the night, but the judges all agreed that the best was saved for last. Platinum Ticket winner Canaan James Hill was feeling the pressure as he waited to hit the stage, but the 17-year-old didn't show it when he belted out Marvin Sapp's "Never Would Have Made It.

In the "Harry Potter" movies, the binary of "good" and "evil" is illustrated pretty well by Harry himself — played by Daniel Radcliffe — and his lifelong enemy Lord Voldemort. Still, Harry has plenty of minor villains to deal with along the way, and one is his schoolboy nemesis Draco Malfoy, portrayed throughout the franchise's eight movies by Tom Felton. So would Felton and Radcliffe work together again? According to Felton, they've chatted about it a bit, but there would be a bit of a twist if the two ever teamed up for a different project.
In an interview with Digital Spy in May of 2022, Felton was asked about any possible reunions with any of his "Harry Potter" co-stars, and he said he'd leap at the chance to work alongside Radcliffe in particular. "We all talk about doing something again in all different ways," Felton told the outlet. "Daniel and I have...

A Marvel star has been cast, along with six other actors, in the upcoming movie adaptation of Shiver, a young adult fantasy romance novel that has drawn comparisons to Twilight. The paranormal romance in the Twilight book series written by Stephanie Meyer became a popular culture phenomenon, which led to movie adaptations starring Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner. The series' fantastical world and the love triangle between Bella Swan, Edward Cullen, and Jacob Black continues to resonate years later.
Shiver was first published in 2009 and was followed by three sequels in The Wolves of Mercy Falls series. The first bestselling novel written by Maggie Stiefvater follows a young woman named Grace who is saved from a pack of wolves by a yellow-eyed wolf when she is a child. Some of the most illustrious names in rock — and other genres — will pay tribute to Robbie Robertson in a celebratory concert at the L.A.-area Kia Forum on Oct. 17, with the musician’s longtime friend and collaborator Martin Scorsese among the executive producers.
The lineup for “Life Is a Carnival: A Musical Celebration of Robbie Robertson” includes some contemporaries who came up with the Band’s late songwriter-guitarist in the ’60s. These include Bobby Weir, Taj Mahal and three artists who appeared with Robertson in the Scorsese-directed 1986 concert documentary “The Last Waltz”: Eric Clapton, Van Morrison and Mavis Staples.
It also includes some musical figures whose stars have risen in the last 15 years or so, like Eric Church, Allison Russell, Nathaniel Rateliff, Margo Price and — a current mainstay of the Billboard album chart’s top 10 — Noah Kahan.

She told Collider: "When we did the announcement last year, it was really, my agent flew over and honestly, I came off and we were all really emotional. Of course, I always feel lucky to be part of it, but it was like a reminder I suppose of, sorry I'm just gabbling, but I suppose a reminder of how people do feel about Rey. Despite being a box office flop, Halle Berry's Catwoman subtly connects to Tim Burton's Batman Returns through a visible photo of Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman, suggesting they exist in the same universe. The connection between the Burton and Schumacher Batman movies is not definitively established, despite references made by the directors and shared actors like Michael Gough and Pat Hingle. Michael Keaton's return in The Flash and George Clooney's cameo further highlight that each Batman movie series exists in its own universe, creating confusion about the overall timeline.

Though PinkPantheress’s Heaven Knows is dotted with samples across its runtime, the British singer’s debut album nonetheless presents an original, unique vision. A departure from her 2021 mixtape To Hell with It, which is built around succinct, TikTok-ready songs and easily recognizable sonic quotations from various U.K. dance cuts, Heaven Knows is a full-throated pop album with an eye on contemporary trends.
“The Aisle” is as good a bellwether as any to determine if fans will take the leaps that PinkPantheress is asking of them. It’s more robust than anything we’ve heard from her before, with glossy disco inflections and drum work, and layer upon layer of jittering synths. The track’s invocation of disco and nod to 2Pac’s “California Love” are in service of mainstream pop consumption rather than a revivalist genre experiment. Its pastiche is certainly less “cool,” but PinkPantheress delivers it with a surprising ease.

By the time Martin Scorsese’s music documentary “The Last Waltz” premiered in 1978, the legendary Americana music progenitors the Band, whom the film explores, had gone from “Cahoots” to kaput for two years.
The 1976 farewell concert at the center of the film was already a piece of rock and roll history by the time the film debuted. Seeing it Oct. 5 at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles in celebration of its 45th anniversary, it’s clear how much history and American music culture was also saying “Good Night” with Rick Danko, Garth Hudson, Richard Manuel, Levon Helm and the Band’s unofficial leader Robbie Robertson (who called the group “The Brotherhood.”)
To help sort out the importance of “Waltz’s” place in rock history was music historian Harvey Kubernik, who shared his recollections of attending the concert at the Winterland Theater in San Francisco; music rights firm CEO/founder Olivier Chastain,...

Something stinks at Rotten Tomatoes. More than a site for reviewing movies, it’s now a game that studios must play in order to have a successful film. A Rotten Tomatoes score can send a good movie to the can and a bad movie to the Oscars. Now, even at the indie level, if your movie isn’t marketed just the right way, you could be headed for a box office failure.
But it’s more than the system that’s broken. Thanks to an investigative report by Vulture, moviegoers now know that the reviews themselves may be poisoned. Lane Brown and Luke Winkie reported that publicity company Bunker 15 may have been tipping the scales to get small films good Rotten Tomato scores and why it was so important that they do.

Allegations of financial incentives and manipulated critic scores have raised concerns about the integrity of review aggregate platforms, specifically involving PR company Bunker 15 and the popular site Rotten Tomatoes. Bunker 15, a film PR company, tried to boost the Rotten Tomatoes score of the movie Ophelia by paying lesser-known critics for positive reviews. Rotten Tomatoes noticed the manipulation and removed the suspicious reviews, sending a strong warning to the reviewers involved. Despite the influence of Rotten Tomatoes scores on a film's success, it still includes lower-profile reviewers, making its dominance in the movie review industry likely to continue.
A movie PR company bribed Rotten Tomatoes reviewers and now faces the consequences. Active since 1998, Rotten Tomatoes is among the most popular review-aggregation websites. Films seek to be “Certified Fresh” on the website, an honor awarded only to those who are able to achieve a Tomatometer that remains over 75%.
Per Vulture, a film PR company attempted to scam their way into better film reviews. Back in 2018, a film PR company named Bunker 15 was responsible for the publicity of reimagined Shakespeare tale Ophelia.

In a new, withering exposé about how easily Rotten Tomatoes, the popular review aggregator website, can be manipulated, it is revealed that a movie publicity firm called Bunker 15 paid for positive reviews for the 2018 Daisy Ridley movie “Ophelia.”
The firm paid critics $50 or more for each review, according to the New York Magazine/Vulture piece, which cited internal company emails and critics.
The pay-for-positive-reviews bit was part of a larger ploy – if the film garnered enough positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, it would look more appealing to a potential distributor. They would also persuade writers to encourage Rotten Tomatoes that mixed reviews receive a “positive” distinction on the site. They also somehow made it so that negative reviews of the movie weren’t counted.
As for the fate of “Ophelia,” a month after it was certified “fresh” IFC Films announced it had acquired the film for distribution in the United States.

In 2017, director Martin Scorsese wrote an essay in The Hollywood Reporter which referred to the movie review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes as being "hostile to serious filmmakers." Now, there's new evidence that Rotten Tomatoes is not only hostile to filmmakers, but also to anyone who reads a Rotten Tomatoes score.
Vulture has published an article revealing that, for at least the past five years, Rotten Tomatoes has been hacked and manipulated by a PR firm that has actually paid obscure, low-level members of Rotten Tomatoes to provide positive coverage of the films that PR company represents, all in a shameless effort to boost those films' Rt scores.
This brazen hijacking, combined with film studios' increasing reliance on the Tomatometer as a marketing tool and the long-complained-about and imprecise nature of how Rotten Tomatoes scores actually work, is yet another reason why that platform should not hold the position it holds...

George Lucas took inspiration from many sources for his intergalactic saga, Star Wars. He incorporated the elemental hero's journey, as broken down by Joseph Campbell, to Dune and the Alien films. Likewise, his creative team, including costume designers and concept artists, drew inspiration from a plethora of classical art and design work.
The Star Wars team specifically cites some art and history parallels in their work. Other artistic references are so blatant that it wouldn't be a stretch to imagine it was intentional. The Star Wars saga stretches on through generations, and no doubt it will continue its storytelling for years to come, drawing from various cultures, art, classic myths, plays, and fairy tales.

Daisy Ridley lines up her next project in Cleaner, a Die Hard-style thriller from Casino Royale director Martin Campbell. Ridley’s life changed forever when she took on the role of Rey in 2015’s blockbuster Star Wars sequel trilogy entry The Force Awakens. Recently it was revealed that Ridley’s Rey will return in a new Star Wars franchise film entitled New Jedi Order, set fifteen years after The Rise of Skywalker.
In addition to her ongoing duties in the Star Wars universe, Ridley continues to line up other projects, including a just-revealed Die Hard-like action film directed by the man who made GoldenEye, Casino Royale and The Mask of Zorro. As reported by Deadline, Cleaner will star Ridley as a former special forces soldier named Joey Locke who now washes windows on London’s towering Shard building, who goes John McClane after radical activists take 300 hostages inside the building.

There’s surprising news out of “Celebration,” the movable feast pep rally that the Star Wars franchise holds for itself. This year’s event is being held in London, and it opened with a bang as big as an exploding Death Star.
Daisy Ridley will return to the galaxy far, far away and reprise her role of Rey (sometimes called Rey Skywalker) in one of the upcoming Star Wars films. The untitled project is set 15 years after the events of “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.” Ridley’s Rey will appear as Jedi master, teaching at a Jedi academy. It is unclear if she is the principal character or not.
Ridley herself appeared on stage with director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and Lucasfilm big Kathleen Kennedy to the gasps of the assembled fans.

The cast of the Star Wars sequel trilogy includes some of the most renowned actors of their time playing exciting new characters in a galaxy far, far away. When Disney acquired Lucasfilm, the first project the studio fast-tracked into development was a Star Wars sequel trilogy that picks up three decades after Return of the Jedi. The sequel trilogy brought back familiar icons like Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher in their beloved roles from the original Star Wars trilogy, but it also cast a bunch of fresh faces like Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver as brand-new characters.
Some of the actors in the Star Wars sequel trilogy were already well-known stars from other franchises before joining the ensemble, like Andy Serkis and Gwendoline Christie, while others were launched to international stardom by their Star Wars roles, like John Boyega and Oscar Isaac. The sequel trilogy introduced some promising new figures to the Star Wars universe,...

A few months after the book first hit shelves, Tom Felton's Harry Potter co-stars Jason Isaacs and Rupert Grint have a jokingly honest review of his memoir. Much like fellow child actors Grint, Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson, Felton rose to prominence for his role in the franchise adaptation of J.K. Rowling's fantasy novels centered on the eponymous young wizard and his adventures while attending Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry. Felton starred in the films as Draco Malfoy, Harry's frequent rival and bully and a member of the Death Eaters for some time.
Though having debuted at No. 1 on the New York Times' nonfiction bestseller list, Tom Felton's Harry Potter co-stars Jason Isaacs and Rupert Grint have an honest review for his memoir.

Where do you go after headlining a "Star Wars" trilogy? It's a dilemma multiple actors have faced over the decades, and the outcomes have varied wildly. Some have gone on to enjoy incredible careers in fields such as voice acting and script doctoring, whereas others have followed their time playing in the immensely popular sci-fi fantasy sandbox by making actually real movies like the "'Romeo and Juliet,' but with pizza businesses" rom-com "Little Italy." Journeying to a galaxy far, far away can be a proper roll of the dice, in other words, so far as the impact it can have on your professional ambitions as a performer is concerned.
In the wake of the "Star Wars" sequel trilogy, its leads have all found themselves in dramatically different places. Admittedly, not much has changed for Oscar Isaac and Adam Driver, both of whom have continued to make fascinating career choices,...

William Shakespeare's classics like Romeo and Juliet are the best stories to receive the movie treatment, but a powerful tragedy that is difficult to illuminate is Hamlet. Shakespeare's definitive themes of revenge, love, and betrayal, as well as elegant and passionate dialogue, define Hamlet's epic tale. "To be or not to be" is Hamlet's iconic line that has been uttered by esteemed actors such as Kenneth Branagh and Laurence Olivier over the years. The words may seem simple, but there is deep meaning behind them as they convey Hamlet's inner thoughts as he comes to terms with his father's death.
Adapting Shakespeare's tragedy for the screen requires delicacy, not just with the Renaissance backdrop but the discourse and vernacular that impassion Hamlet to seek his arduous journey. The visual interpretation and character study may vary between filmmakers with some choosing a modernized approach or a changed framework that promotes...

Tom Felton addresses rumors that he was once in the running to play Han Solo in Solo: A Star Wars Story. Felton was a very young actor when he was cast as Slytherin bully Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter films. He would go on to portray the same character in all the subsequent Harry Potter movies, ending with 2011’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2.
Then after portraying bad guy Draco Malfoy for over a decade, Felton went on to star in a variety of different movies, including Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Megan Leavey and Ophelia. But according to one internet rumor, the actor was at one time up for a much bigger role in a much bigger movie franchise. The tragic origin story of DC Comics hero Batman has gotten a tragic new meaning in beautiful cover art inspired by William Shakespeare. The origin of the Caped Crusader is one of the most well-known beginnings for a comic book hero. In fact, the tale of Batman's childhood is so engrained in popular culture that even Harley Quinn has mocked DC for its constant retelling with the repetitive image of Martha Wayne's pearls hitting the floor whenever a new Batman movie hits the big-screen.
However, this doesn't necessarily mean that there's nothing new to learn from Batman's origin. It's just been looked at so often that now new angles need to be approached. For example, season 3 of HBO Max's Harley Quinn approached the death of the Waynes by having the villainess become his official grief counselor. This look at how Bruce Wayne became Batman put the character in a...

[Warning: The following contains spoilers for Fear The Walking Dead Season 7 Episode 11, “Ofelia.”] After seven seasons of playing Alicia Clark on Fear The Walking Dead, Alycia Debnam-Carey has stepped into a new role: director. Debnam-Carey talked to TV Insider about which scene she was most excited (and most nervous) to shoot, how she felt about putting Luciana (Danay Garcia) front and center in her episode, and — as a bonus! — we’ve included an excellent question that fellow Fear actor Omid Abtahi asked her during Fear’s preview junket. Lauren “Lo” Smith/AMC During the preview junket, you said you were excited to direct on Fear because you know the show like the back of your hand. How did your longevity on the series play into the choices you made behind the camera? Alycia Debnam-Carey: Because I’ve been on Fear for so long, it weaved its way into my choices without me knowing in so many ways.

Fear the Walking Dead has been straddling the fine line between good and bad throughout Fear the Walking Dead Season 7, but Fear the Walking Dead Season 7 Episode 11 was a step in the right direction.
If there's been one complaint about the series, it's that the characters who matter and deserve storylines are regularly sidelined or forgotten about entirely.
If you watch Fear the Walking Dead online, you know Daniel and Luciana are some of the longest-serving cast members, so their return to the forefront felt more like a way of appeasing the complaining fans.
Daniel's health has been declining for a while now, and titling the episode "Ofelia" reiterated that this outing would be a deep dive into some of the better characters.
The complicated dynamic between Daniel and Luciana has been exciting, to say the least, but it was obvious that, at times, he thought Luciana was his deceased daughter.

This hasn't played at any festivals, but will be debuting on Sky in the UK in November; no US date has been announced. The film is inspired by the life of history-making ceramicist Clarice Cliff. "Her pottery made history, her story broke every rule." This one stars Phoebe Dynevor (from "Bridgerton") as Clarice, "a working-class woman in the 1920s who bounces between jobs in different factories, constantly getting in trouble for not putting up with sexism and trying to push her creative ideas." She teams up with a factory, and then "fights to have her art recognised and for men to acknowledge that women can do whatever they put their minds to." Daisy Ridley opens up in the February 2021 edition of Tatler magazine (via Yahoo) about being labeled as “intimidating” and “quite aggressive” by crew members during different productions. Ridley’s career includes three “Star Wars” movies, “Murder on the Orient Express,” “Ophelia,” and the upcoming Doug Liman-directed action movie “Chaos Walking,” among other titles. It was on “Chaos Walking” where a crew member told the actress she’s intimidating.

Making the transition from being a complete unknown to playing a major role in a blockbuster franchise doesn’t always lead to a long and successful career as a top-tier Hollywood talent, and it seems especially true when it comes to Star Wars. His career breakthrough came last year as Lance Corporal Schofield in 1917. The riveting World War I epic was a box office hit and awards darling, winning the Golden Globe and BAFTA for Best Film. MacKay carried the film on his shoulders with a quiet, resolute performance.
His first foray as a leading man was shot right before 1917. True History of the Kelly Gang is a post-modern, punk rock retelling of Australia's most infamous outlaw and folk hero. Ned Kelly waged an insurrection against British Colonial rule in the 1870s. Director Justin Kurzel takes dramatic license and portrays Ned Kelly as a muscled, homoerotic firebrand forced into brutality. True History of the Kelly Gang foregoes a standard narrative with a highly stylized and segmented approach.

Close-Up is a feature that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. Albertina Carri's The Daughters of Fire is exclusively showing March 23 - April 21, 2020 in Mubi's Undiscovered series.Dating back to making shorts in the late 1990s, Albertina Carri has become a significant iconoclast in Argentine cinema in both realms of fiction and non-fiction films. Film and politics run in her blood and have long informed her confrontational and subversive sensibilities. As a queer woman, sex and gender amid homophobia, sexism, maschismo culture, and the male gaze also inform her work and career, which in addition to filmmaking also has her working within Argentine film culture as a major creative force behind Argentina’s Lgbtq film festival, Asterisco. Her most recent feature, The Daughters of Fire, is provocative in its explicit scenes among a group of queer women in which sex is presented in shockingly honest and upfront detail in fully pornographic splendor.

In 1968, the Band recorded “The Weight,” a song full of images and characters that Robbie Robertson said he had been storing in his imagination for years. Robertson admits in his autobiography, Testimony, that he struggled to articulate to producer John Simon what the song was even about, but it’s become the Band’s most well-known classic, and it still echoes loudly today. Playing for Change, a group dedicated to “opening up how people see the world through the lens of music and art,” recently spent two years filming artists around the world,...
