Short stories have always been prime real estate in the world of adaptations. Largely those are relegated to horror anthology TV shows like Twilight Zone, Outer Limits, Tales From the Darkside, or the new Creepshow revival but that doesn’t mean exclusively. You can have things like Lawnmower Man, Eight O’Clock in the Morning, or Children of the Corn that are anywhere from 8 to 18 pages and make a whole movie, or in case of Children of the Corn an entire franchise, out of those pages. Today is all about a short story that probably had more legs than you realized. The Fly, written by George Langelaan and published in 1957 would go on to be part of 5 movies. While 3 of those are cash in sequels, one of them is a somewhat slept on late 50s classic while the other is listed at or near the top of any list discussing remakes.

Original “Saturday Night Live” cast member Dan Aykroyd did not make an appearance on the series’ 50th anniversary special on Sunday, but he nonetheless enjoyed watching it from home.
“All Heads up toasting triumphant SNL 50th,” Aykroyd wrote in a post on X. “Advantage of not attending — got to see every second of concert and show on TV. Quote from my children: ‘Look at daddy’s smile!’ Had it from start to finish. Congratulations Lorne. Well done as usual.”
Aykroyd bowed out of the live broadcast due to “prior commitments,” his representative told Variety. He was the only surviving original cast member to miss out — Garrett Morris appeared on stage, Laraine Newman was in a pre-taped sketch, and Jane Curtin and Chevy Chase were in the building.
Still, Aykroyd posted that day on X: “Cracking a Head with pride at having been a co-founder of SNL along with everyone we...

(Updated with video) Saturday Night Live has had a lot of Potus mocking over the decades, but you wouldn’t have known it from Sunday’s SNL50: The Anniversary Special.
Tonight’s live show had Alec Baldwin, Will Ferrell, Jay Pharoah, Tina Fey, Jason Sudeikis, Maya Rudolph and Amy Poehler in attendance but there was nothing of the presidents and presidential candidates they’ve played and poked fun at over nearly 10 presidencies.
In an era where Donald Trump and the FCC are targeting the media and media owners, Baldwin’s acclaimed impression of the former Celebrity Apprentice and SNL host was noticeably absent. Whether or not it was the chill of further legal and regulatory action against NBC owners Comcast, with almost everything else and the kitchen sink from SNL‘s history on screen tonight, seeing no politics out of the Potus-mocking show’s long legacy was almost as rank...

We’re celebrating 50 years of “Saturday Night Live”! All this week, we’re digging into the late-night comedy institution with new stories, including lists, essays, interviews, and more.
When “The Blues Brothers” hit theaters in 1980, it opened a Pandora’s Box that would eventually gift Hollywood films like “Wayne’s World” and curse it with abominations like “It’s Pat” and “Coneheads.” John Landis’ ultra-cool film about two brothers on a mission from God to get the band back together was bursting with Chicago blues performances, epic car chases, and enough celebrity cameos to fill a season of “Saturday Night Live.” Grossing over $100 million on a $27 million budget, it proved to many that characters who originated on Lorne Michaels’ NBC variety show were more than capable of carrying their own feature film.
In theory, that was true. With “SNL” exploding in popularity and Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi wading into movie stardom,...

When Ben Stiller was 8, he visited his father, Jerry, on the set of the movie The Taking of Pelham One Two Three and experienced a kind of epiphany. In the 1974 thriller set in the New York City subway, Jerry, who would enjoy a late-career resurgence 20 years later as Seinfeld‘s Frank Costanza, was playing a transit cop alongside Walter Matthau, and Ben was visiting during a night shoot, as lights on giant cranes shone down on the slick city streets around the Triborough Bridge.
“It was so cool, so cool,” says Stiller, now 59, recalling the scene as he looks out from the offices of his Red Hour Productions in the West Village in mid-January, over a sweeping view of the Hudson River. It’s the same view he had as a child at his family’s apartment on Riverside Drive some 70 blocks north. Jerry and actress Anne Meara, Ben’s mother,...

Before he arrived at the Old Joliet Prison south of Chicago, now the Joliet Area Historical Museum, Erik Devereux made sure his ensemble was in appropriate Blues Brothers order. The basics weren’t a stretch: The 61-year-old teacher at the University of Illinois-Chicago already owns a black jacket and pants, a dark tie (a little wide for the occasion but workable), and white socks and sunglasses. The black fedora was another matter, so he hired a haberdasher in the city to make one for him.

Saturday Night is currently generating significant buzz with its theatrical release, and Dan Aykroyd, a major contributor to the NBC sketch comedy, has given his blessings to the movie by calling it a standalone masterpiece. The biographical comedy-drama captures the behind-the-scenes drama and creative process of airing the very first episode of Saturday Night Live on October 11, 1975, as Lorne Michaels and the rest of the cast and crew swam through the chaos of creating history.
On Friday, which was the 49th anniversary of Saturday Night Lives premiere, Aykroyd took to X to sing praise for the groundbreaking movie. He wrote:
Cracking a Head to applaud Jason Reitmans triumphant SNL film. Wow! What a propulsive, engaging, funny, beautifully cast and acted, suspenseful, adventurous, music-filled ride. A perfect window into the creative process at its highest level.

This past weekend saw the return of one of the most oddly-specific fan conventions in existence: Blues Brothers Con.
Fans of the classic 1980 comedy gathered at Chicago’s Old Joliet Prison, where Jake Blues was famously incarcerated, to watch Dan Aykroyd and Jim Belushi (or “Elwood” and “Brother Zee”) shambolically cover classic songs to a crowd of die-hard fans… who Aykroyd made sure to avoid eye contact with at all costs.
The second Blues Brothers Con will also reportedly be the last. Staging these events hasn’t exactly been a smooth process. The first concert was supposed to happen back in 2020, in order to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the film, but had to be delayed because of the pandemic. The follow-up was scheduled for 2023, but was ultimately pushed back due to the SAG-AFTRA strike.

Bob Tischler, the writer and producer known for his work on Saturday Night Live, has died. He was 78.
The former SNL head writer, who is largely credited with helping revive the NBC sketch comedy show after its infamously panned 1980-81 season, died on July 13 at his home in Bodega Bay, California.
His son Zeke told The New York Times that the cause of death was pancreatic cancer.
Born June 12, 1946 in Englewood, New Jersey, Tischler attended Ithaca and Franconia Colleges in the 1960s before working as a sound engineer in radio and television.
After working together on a radio ad, Christopher Guest recommended him to National Lampoon, for which he produced the albums Radio Dinner (1972), Gold Turkey (1975) and That’s Not Funny, That’s Sick (1977), as well as The National Lampoon Radio Hour in 1973.

It’s funny how an old TV catchphrase will just magically pop into your brain. While watching this new comedy action caper I recalled George Peppard as Hannibal Smith, leader of the NBC 80s ratings juggernaut, “The A-Team”. With a big cigar clenched between his pearly whites, he’d grin and exclaim, “I love it when a plan comes together” as the bad guys’ vehicles would flip over (though there had to be a shot of them climbing out of the windows unscathed for the censors). Well, the two main characters of this film might say, “I hate it when a plan falls apart”. And it does spectacularly for these luckless schmoes, actually played by members of the “Ocean’s Crew” (the 2000s reboot). And though they spend most of the story’s runtime trying to escape and survive, the title ironically labels them The Instigators.

Tom Hanks is one of the most celebrated and well-known celebrities in Hollywood today, but along the way, there were a few movies that shaped his career. Tom Hanks got his start in acting when he was in his early 20s after moving to New York to pursue a career in the industry. He got some early success after landing a few minor and other leading parts, as well as landing a role to play in a stage production of The Mandrake, directed by Daniel Southern alongside the Riverside Shakespeare Company.

Recently, I had the chance to sit down with Paul Rudd and Carrie Coon, who are out promoting Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. Both Rudd and Coon have been outspoken in their love of the original Ghostbusters, as well as the original cast, and I couldn’t help but put them both on the spot a little bit. Given that young audiences are discovering the original Ghostbusters thanks to these new movies, I wondered which classic comedy featuring some of the cast Rudd and Coon might suggest younger audiences check out next.

Steve Lawrence, a king among easy-listening crooners who rocketed to fame in the ’50s and ’60s as half of the duo Steve and Eydie, died Thursday at age 88. Lawrence died at home in Los Angeles, and the cause of death was complications from Alzheimer’s disease, according to a spokesperson for the family, Susan DuBow.
Lawrence’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis had finally put an end to his touring career in 2019, after a run in the public eye that spanned six and a half decades.
Lawrence was preceded in death in 2013 by his wife, Eydie Gormé, with whom he enjoyed nearly unparalleled success as a performing couple during their heyday as touring artists and TV stars in the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s. The couple had continued to tour together through 2009.

Steve Lawrence, the charismatic Grammy- and Emmy-winning crooner who delighted audiences for decades in nightclubs, on concert stages and in film and television appearances, died Thursday. He was 88.
Lawrence, who partnered in a popular act with his wife of 55 years, the late Eydie Gormé, died of complications from Alzheimer’s disease, a publicidst announced.
With his boyish good looks, silky voice and breezy personality, Lawrence broke into show business when he won a talent competition on Arthur Godfrey’s CBS show and signed with King Records as a teenager. The singer chose to stay old school and resist the allure of rock ‘n’ roll.
“It didn’t attract me as much,” Lawrence once said. “I grew up in a time period when music was written by Irving Berlin and Cole Porter and George and Ira Gershwin and Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein and Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart and Sammy Cahn and Julie Stein.

You may be unfamiliar with Please Don't Destroy, a comedy trio best known for their work in and within Saturday Night Live. Since 2021 they've contributed pre-recorded elements to the show. The Treasure Of Foggy Mountain therefore joins a long and august tradition of cast members making films. For every Wayne's World, Blues Brothers and without alliteration Ghostbusters, there's A Night At The Roxbury or a Coneheads. The Treasure Of Foggy Mountain is far more of the latter than the former, and it's vanishingly unlikely that anyone not already familiar with Please Don't Destroy will be minded to become so, especially after having seen it.
Saturday Night Live's influence on American comedy is as pernicious and pervasive as that of Cambridge Footlights on British humour. There are further connections with The National Lampoon growing out of Harvard, though their sophomoric tendencies were most visible in Animal House. There's...

Making a top ten list of your favourite movies can be difficult, but is it any easier when you narrow that list down to a single decade? IndieWire asked dozens of filmmakers to put together a list of their favourite 80s movies, and the results are as widely varied as the decade itself. Which 80s movies does Bill Hader hold dear to his heart? What are some of Nia DaCosta’s favourites? Can Edgar Wright actually contain himself to just ten movies? What horror movies of the 80s top Eli Roth’s list?
Bill Hader’s (Barry) Favourite 80s Movies:

If you were a kid in the early 1990s, you were probably a fan of Mike Myers and Dana Carvey in the "Saturday Night Live" sketch "Wayne's World." Myers played Wayne Campbell, a metal fan who shot a cable access show in his mom's basement with his buddy Garth Algar (Dana Carvey). The bit spawned a whole lot of catchphrases like the self-explanatory "schwing" when they saw a pic of a beautiful woman. Not every "SNL" sketch can support an entire movie, but "Wayne's World" not only managed one but two. In fact, it was the second "SNL" sketch to become a film after "Blues Brothers" and the first to get a sequel.
"Wayne's World," directed by Penelope Spheeris, infamously gave rise to a lot of rumors about Myers being difficult to work with during filming. In an episode of The Hollywood Reporter's "It Happened in Hollywood" podcast, Spheeris spoke about the experience,...

Hollywood loves nothing more than movie sequels, because they come with ready-made audiences, but they aren't always as popular as the original movie or even remembered at all. If the first installment was widely successful, that can create some very high expectations to live up to, and not every sequel manages it.
Still, many movie studios will choose to make a sequel - even without the original actors or director - in an attempt to cash in on the success of their predecessors. It's a huge risk, and these ventures can end up crashing and burning, creating movie sequels that become critical and financial flops that fall quickly into obscurity.

Universal has moved “Strays” from June 9 to August 18, placing the R-rated talking-animal comedy in the same general release slot where the likes of “Good Boys” and “We’re The Millers” found fortune and glory in years prior. Now, instead of opening against “Transformers: Rise of the Beast,” itself something of a talking-animal tentpole, it’ll square off against DC’s “Blue Beetle.”
It will replace the untitled comedy from the Please Don’t Destroy comedy group. That film, starring “Saturday Night Live” vets Ben Marshall, John Higgins and Martin Herlihy, will now go straight to Peacock on Nov. 17. If you thought the original The Blues Brothers didn’t warrant a sequel–especially after John Belushi’s death–then you undoubtedly don’t think 1998’s illogically titled Blues Brothers 2000 does. Still, that hasn’t stopped ideas for another Blues Brothers sequel from popping into star Dan Aykroyd’s head, something he has pestered Belushi’s younger brother, Jim, about for some time now.
In a new interview, Jim Belushi revealed that Dan Aykroyd has several ideas as to how to turn The Blues Brothers into a full-blown trilogy. “[Dan Aykroyd] actually, you know, he’s always got ideas. I mean, he’s got this whole thing about, you know, ‘I find Jake’s brother in Albania, you know. I find out there was another brother, a Blues Brother. And I go to Albania and I find him and I bring him out. He doesn’t speak English.’” This additional brother...

Since 1980, the weekly sketch show "Saturday Night Live" has produced eleven feature films based on its characters. "The Blues Brothers" was released in 1980 and remains one of our favorite "SNL" movies (though it's debatable how much of an "SNL" movie it is with no Lorne Michaels attached). It was another 12 years before another "SNL" movie came out, and it was worth the wait. The 1990s were the heyday for a proliferation "SNL" movies, beginning in 1992 with the beloved "Wayne's World."
The rest of the decade was hit or miss for "SNL" movies in terms of quality. We saw the return of Dan Aykroyd and Jane Curtain in the heartwarming "Coneheads." Will Ferrell got his first leading role with "A Night at the Roxbury." There was an awful "Blues Brothers" sequel for some reason. And does anyone even remember they made an entire movie with Julia Sweeney's androgynous character, "It's...

The Fast and Furious movies aren't the only ones with great car chases. Join us as we take a look at the 50 best car chase scenes in film. This week, we're counting down from #25 to #1!
Like peanut butter and jelly, car chases and movies are two things that just go together perfectly. A chase is inherently interesting to watch - someone is trying their best to get away by any means possible, while the other party is trying to stop them from doing so. The danger involved, the threat of violence, and even the thrill of the hunt are all part of why we often can’t look away. A car chase is the next level of chase. They are fast - an embodiment of man and machine together. They are also dangerous - the stakes are incredibly high, and not just for the people involved in the chase.

Dan Aykroyd was one of the speakers at Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds's public memorial at Forest Lawn Cemetery in La on Saturday. The former Saturday Night Live cast member paid tribute to ex-fiancée Carrie by taking a walk down memory lane and recalling a time when Carrie choked on a brussel sprout and he performed the Heimlich maneuver on her. "If I'd been with our beloved showboat, I might have been able to save her again," he told the audience. Dan and Carrie met on the set of Saturday Night Live and fell in love while filming Blues Brothers in 1980. Their relationship quickly became serious as they "obtained blood tests for compatibility from an East Indian female doctor" before getting engaged, though they eventually called it quits and Carrie went on to marry Paul Simon. During a recent interview with Empire magazine, Dan referred to Carrie as "one...

Tomorrow marks the one-month anniversary of the tragic death of beloved actress Carrie Fisher, who passed after suffering a heart attack at the age of 60. To honor the late actress, Empire has brought in a number of the actress' closest friends as part of a 24-page farewell in their March 2017 issue, which goes on sale today. The publication released an excerpt from this touching tribute, written by the late actress' former fiancee, comedy legend Dan Aykroyd.
Empire released this excerpt before the issue went on sale, where Dan Aykroyd opened up about his relationship with Carrie Fisher, revealing how it was a "privelege and honour" to even know Carrie Fisher, having grown up "a simple Catholic kid from a government family in Hull, Quebec." Here's what he had to say about this "one-off, broke-the-mould woman," and how they first met and fell in love.

Some of the best remembrances are nothing more than a collection of disjointed memories. That’s what this essay from Dan Aykroyd is. Aykroyd and the late Carrie Fisher were engaged to be married at one time, and in this memoriam he focuses not on the bigger picture of their courtship but the smaller moments that still resonate many years later. It’s nearly impossible to encapsulate a person’s soul or influence in words, after all, and Aykroyd’s collection of words, jokes, and recollections provides a uniquely moving look at the actress.
In the essay, he notes how they fell in love on the set of Blues Brothers before touching on his relationship with her family, a romantic Lake Tahoe getaway, and a few small details about their last night together. It’s a passage like the following, however, that hits the hardest:
While in Chicago we obtained...

Los Angeles – The force was always with Carrie Fisher to the day she passed away…Tuesday, December 27th, 2016. The actress and writer died of the heart attack she suffered on a flight from London to Los Angeles four days ago. Best known for her role as Princess Leia in the first “Star Wars” trilogy, she was 60 years old.

The unexpected breakthrough hit launched a new era of blockbuster movies and a religious devotion from audiences to the series, and Fisher even revisited the role – as General Leia Organa – in 2015’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens. She also wrote seven books, the latest being a memoir of her initial “Star Wars” days,...
