It’s been a long four years, but Michelle Zauner’s beloved indie pop act Japanese Breakfast is finally back with For Melancholy Brunettes (& Sad Women), the band’s fourth album, released Friday.

For Melancholy Brunettes follows the critically acclaimed Jubilee, which became Japanese Breakfast’s most successful project so far, earning Zauner Grammy nominations for best new artist and best alternative music album at the 64th Grammys back in 2022.

Zauner announced the new album back in January, sharing the album’s lead single “Orlando In Love” the same day. She released the follow-up single “Mega Circuit” a month later. Blake Mills, whose production credits include tracks for Fiona Apple, Perfume Genius, Dawes and Alabama Shakes among others, produced the project.

It’s taken over four years for Playboi Carti to produce the follow-up to his landscape-shifting album Whole Lotta Red. Titling its successor, Music, with devious opacity, the famously withholding rapper gives us something new for him: excess. Even though Whole Lotta Red and 2018’s Die Lit were both an hour long, they still felt focused and of a piece. Music is a good 15 minutes longer, offering 30 tracks that span myriad styles and producers. It’s messy and less cohesive than anything he’s released to date, but it also demonstrates the staggering range of mainstream rap’s most eccentric, experimental, and enigmatic auteur.

The vocal styles on display throughout are perhaps Music’s greatest asset. Carti’s vocal evolution has been the stuff of lore: He debuted a new voice on Travis Scott’s 2023 hit “Fe!n” that was shockingly deep and garbled, like he had bronchitis and was also drunk.

The project is executive produced by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson’s G-Unit Film & Television and Ashok Amritraj’s Hyde Park Entertainment Group.

The official music video for Selena Gomez and Gracie Abrams‘ new song “Call Me When You Break Up” has been released!

The two music stars made the song with Selena‘s fiance Benny Blanco and it will be featured on the engaged couple’s upcoming album I Said I Love You First, out March 21.

Selena sings on the first verse, “Call me when you break up / I wanna be the first one on your mind when you wake up / I miss the way we’d stay up / We’d talk about forever when I’m takin’ off my makeup.”

Selena debuted the song earlier in the week during a listening party she held in London for a select group of fans.

The music video is a self-shot video featuring Selena, Gracie, and Benny rolling around in a bed and singing to an iPhone camera.

Cynthia Erivo, fresh off the box office success of “Wicked,” will command center stage on Broadway’s biggest night as host of the 78th Tony Awards.

She takes over as emcee from Ariana DeBose, who hosted the past three shows. Erivo is a former Tony winner herself, having captured the best actress in a musical prize in 2016 for her turn in the Broadway revival of “The Color Purple.” She is currently nominated for an Oscar for her work as Elphaba in “Wicked.” Previously, she earned nods for her performance in 2019’s “Harriet,” as well as for co-writing “Stand Up,” a song that was featured in that film. Erivo has also won an Emmy for a televised performance of “The Color Purple,” plus a Grammy for the show’s cast recording, putting her tantalizingly close to Egot status.

“I am so proud and excited to take on this glorious honor,” Erivo said in a statement.

Cynthia Erivo will host the 78th annual Tony Awards this June.

This marks the first time hosting the ceremony for Erivo, who is a Tony Award winner for her starring role in the 2015 revival of The Color Purple, which also led to Emmy and Grammy Awards. Erivo is nominated for an Academy Award at this year’s Oscars ceremony for her role as Elphaba in Wicked.

“I am so proud and excited to take on this glorious honor,” Erivo said. “I am looking forward to ushering the theatre community at large through a night that celebrates the wonderful performances we have witnessed throughout the year. I hope I can rise to the occasion.”

The Tony Awards will be held on Sun. June 8 at Radio City Music Hall and broadcast live to both coasts on CBS and streaming on Paramount+ in the U.S.

When you have to live in solitary for a year, with next to no contact with the outside world, how do you pass the time? Well, music is probably going to play a big part.

And indeed it does in Apple TV+’s new film “The Gorge.” Now streaming, the movie centers on two assassins from different countries, hired to each operate a guard tower on either side of a massive gorge. Why? Well, there are creatures down there, and those creatures can never get out.

The two guards are forbidden from ever contacting each other, but they don’t exactly follow that rule, eventually falling in love. And, as we mentioned, music is a piece of their communication.

Cynthia Erivo is wicked good, and GLAAD knows it.

The advocacy group said Wednesday that the Wicked star will receive its Stephen F. Kolzak Award, which is presented to a LGBTQ media professional who has made a significant difference in raising visibility and promoting acceptance of LGBTQ people and issues. The singer, actor and force for equity and inclusion will be lauded at the 36th annual GLAAD Media Awards on March 27 in Los Angeles.

Erivo’s much-honored career includes a Tony, Grammy and Daytime Emmy for 2016’s The Color Purple to go with a Primetime Emmy nomination and three Oscar noms. She is vying again in this year’s stacked Best Actress Oscar race for Wicked, and reprises her Elphaba role in the upcoming bookender Wicked: For Good, which hits theaters November 21.

But less often highlighted is the 1968 appearance by Sly and the Family Stone, which saw its charismatic singer jump into the largely white, middle-aged male audience during a rousing medley of hits that included snippets of a song that would soon become “I Want to Take You Higher”.

With her Best Comedy/Music Actress Golden Globes nomination on Monday, “Wicked” star Cynthia Erivo is now a four-time Globes nominee. But as Erivo tells Gold Derby, the recognition feels different this time around because it’s happening with a group of close friends by her side.

“This time I get to do this with the people I love,” Erivo tells Gold Derby in an interview recorded Monday after the Golden Globes nominations. She was a previous film nominee as an actress and songwriter for “Harriet” and then an actress nominee for the television limited series “Genius: Aretha.”

“The last time I felt a little solo and though loads of people put the work in, at those awards ceremonies you’re sat by yourself,” she adds. “You don’t really have a lot of people around you and this time around I think we can go and have a good time together.

As expected, the blockbuster hit “Wicked” landed several 2025 Golden Globe Award nominations on Monday, including Best Comedy/Musical, Best Comedy/Musical Actress for Cynthia Erivo, Best Supporting Actress for Ariana Grande, and Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, the category which the Golden Globes award “to the year’s most acclaimed, highest-earning and/or most viewed films that have garnered extensive global audience support and attained cinematic excellence.”

Instead, the Golden Globes voters leaned more high-brow with directing nominations for Jacques Audiard (“Emilia Pérez”), Sean Baker (“Anora”), Brady Corbet (“The Brutalist”), Edward Berger (“Conclave”), and two surprises: Coralie Fargeat (“The Substance”) and Payal Kapadia (“All We Imagine as Light”).

Since its release in November, “Wicked” has become a true phenomenon with more than $400 million in ticket sales.

Haikyuu!! fans face an emotional serve in 2025. Two beloved films from the franchise, Haikyuu!! Movie 3: Genius and Sense and Haikyuu!! Movie 4: Battle of Concepts, were recently earmarked for a Dec. 31 removal from Netflix.

The departures, while bittersweet, might have one silver lining: the two films are both compilation entries, mostly just recapping moments from the anime’s third and fourth seasons, respectively. Aaron Pierre is putting in an “extensive” amount of homework to portray the beloved Green Lantern known as John Stewart in the upcoming HBO Original series, Lanterns. As it turns out, Pierre isn’t a stranger to the world of DC Comics either, as he portrayed a member of Kandor City's Sagitari, named Dev-Em, on Syfy’s Superman prequel show, Krypton. And the actor spoke about becoming one of Sector 2814’s protectors in the Dcu during a brand-new interview promoting his next film, Mufasa: The Lion King. Pierre said (per ComicBook.com):

The television nominations for the 2025 Critics Choice Awards have been unveiled!

The awards show celebrates both TV shows and movies, with the movie nominations expected to be unveiled one week from today on December 12. So stay tuned for those!

With the TV nominations unveiled today, it looks like FX’s Shogun has the most nominations this year with 6 total. Several shows came in second place with four nominations each including Hacks, Abbott Elementary, The Diplomat, and The Penguin.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians has found its new Zeus.

Emmy winner Courtney B. Vance has joined the Disney+ series as the king of the Greek gods. He’ll take over the role originated by the late Lance Reddick, who played the part in season one.

Exclusive: Jayme Lawson (The Batman) has been tapped for a key role in The Running Man, Edgar Wright’s adaptation of the novel by Stephen King for Paramount Pictures.

Serayah, Tyler Lepley and Phylicia Rashad are set to lead the ensemble cast of “R&b,” the first film out of the streaming giant’s creative partnership to produce faith-based films with DeVon Franklin and Tyler Perry Studios.

Alanna Brown will direct the modern-day retelling of the iconic biblical love story following Ruth and Boaz. Set in Tennessee, “R&b” is about a young woman who escapes the Atlanta music scene to care for an elderly widowed woman, and in the process finds the love of her life and gains the mother she never had.

Michael Elliot (“Brown Sugar”) and Cory Tynan (“Play’d”) penned the script for the project, which will be produced by Franklin and Perry. Angi Bones, Tony L. Strickland and Bart Lipton executive produce.

Walnette Santiago, Nijah Brenea, James Lee Thomas, Kenneth ‘Babyface’ Edmonds, Jermaine Dupri and Lecrae Moore round out the cast.

HBO announced today that Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler have officially joined the cast of the upcoming DC series Lanterns. Aaron Pierre will play John Stewart and Kyle Chandler has been cast as Hal Jordan.

The anticipated series follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

Lanterns is an HBO series in association with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios. Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King will co-write the series based on the DC comic Green Lantern.

James Hawes directs the first two episodes. The series is executive produced by Mundy, Lindelof, King, and Hawes.

Aaron Pierre currently stars as the lead in Jeremy Saulnier’s Rebel Ridge, which debuted on Netflix on September 6th and was the #1 title worldwide on the streaming service for three weeks in a row.

Exclusive: Anthony Hemingway has come aboard Ryan Murphy’s upcoming Hulu legal drama All’s Fair as director and executive producer. This marks the duo’s first collaboration since the Emmy-winning 2016 limited series People vs. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story. Just like they did back then, Murphy is directing the pilot for All’s Fair, with Hemingway directing multiple episodes.

In All’s Fair, Kim Kardashian stars as Los Angeles’ most successful divorce lawyer working at an all-female firm. The main cast includes Kardashian, Naomi Watts, Niecy Nash, Sarah Paulson and Glenn Close, who also executive produce, as well as Teyana Taylor and Matthew Noszka. Ed O’Neill is set to recur.

Murphy is writing and executive producing with Jon Robin Baitz, Joe Baken, Jamie Pachino, Lyn Greene and Richard Levine. Kris Jenner, Alexis Martin Woodall, Eric Kovtun and Scott Robertson also exec produce alongside Hemingway. 20th Television produces in association with Ryan Murphy Television.

DC Studios and HBO have announced today that Aaron Pierre will play John Stewart in Lanterns. Kyle Chandler was recently cast as Hal Jordan, though the expectation is that Pierre will eventually be the Dcu's main Green Lantern.

Nathan Fillion was previously cast as Guy Gardner in Superman.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the hunt for John came down to Pierre and Stephan James. They both took part in screen tests alongside Chandler on Thursday and Friday and while each "had their boosters," a final decision was made yesterday.

Pierre currently stars as the lead in Jeremy Saulnier's Rebel Ridge which debuted on Netflix on September 6 and was the #1 title worldwide on Netflix for three weeks in a row. In December, Aaron will take on the titular role of Mufasa in Barry Jenkins' animated Lion King prequel for Disney.

On Wednesday, HBO announced that the “Friday Night Lights” Emmy Award winner and the “Rebel Ridge” star will appear opposite each other in “Lanterns,” the cable network’s latest expansion of the DC Comics universe.

Pierre plays Stewart, while Chandler stars as Jordan. Chandler’s participation in the series had been widely reported previously, but HBO finally confirmed his involvement.

Aaron Pierre is officially joining the Green Lantern series at HBO, Variety has learned.

Pierre will star as John Stewart in the series, which is titled “Lanterns.” It was previously reported that Kyle Chandler was in talks for the role of Hal Jordan. According to sources, a number of actors were considered for the role of Stewart, including Stephan James and Damson Idris.

The show is produced by HBO in association with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios and is based on DC’s “Green Lantern” comics.

The show was picked up for eight episodes at HBO in June. Originally intended as a Max original, the show shifted to HBO as part of a new content delineation plan.
