Life has a habit of imitating art. It makes sense, at its core, that would be the case, because it's natural for humans to reinterpret their surroundings into something more fantastical. Or, there is also the desire for something familiar to bring a sense of comfort in a place or setting that can feel overwhelming or even off-putting. Anime, in particular, loves doing this. After all, part of the joy of anime as a medium is that it can take place anywhere and at any time — which means that many familiar locations can be reimagined for the purpose of the plot.
A lot of locations in anime can be visited in real life by brave anime fans who seek to make a pilgrimage to the places that have ignited their own sense of wonder and imagination. Manga and anime creators love to use real-life locations and throw in a lot...

From riveting detective series to stirring crime dramas to thrilling plots about unruly outlaws, the theme of crime in anime comes in many different forms and configurations. Nonetheless, it’s impossible to deny that, whether one wants to see lawbreakers wreak havoc or get punished for their wrongdoings, crime anime has a tantalizing appeal.
The crime anime subgenre is hardly homogenous — commonly, it goes hand-in-hand with mystery and suspense, yet just as frequently combines with other classic anime themes, like science fiction, fantasy, and action-adventure. What brings these multifaceted series together is the exhilaration of their enigmas and unpredictable plots that tackle the darkest, most conniving deeds unraveling on the wrong side of the law. These anime series approach the crime theme in a divergent plentitude of ways — yet all of them do so faultlessly.

A recent trend in anime has been a growing demand for darker, more mature storylines, even in genres that have previously been labeled lighthearted. Anime has featured plenty of grotesque stories throughout its long history, with some of the medium’s most influential works, such as Akira or Berserk, being extremely violent and gruesome. Yet, never before has the darkness been so sought-after in the mainstream.
The explosive popularity of gritty, fatalistic series like Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man, which, despite belonging to the shonen genre, take a lot of inspiration from seinen, signals that fans are done with bright and jolly anime clichés of the past. Today's audience is actually more interested in shows that dare to be violent and realistically macabre. And while not every series, or even every genre, needs this added layer of darkness to succeed, some modern shows would benefit from adopting the daring disquietude of their bleaker counterparts.

This post contains spoilers for "Bungo Stray Dogs."
Kafka Asagiri's "Bungo Stray Dogs" starts off with a note of pathos. An orphaned teenager named Atsushi keels over in hunger after being kicked out of his orphanage, lamenting that he can never belong. Just when these sentiments start to soar, though, the mood shifts as Atsushi accidentally saves an eccentric detective from drowning. This detective, Dazai Osamu (who made /Film's rundown of the strongest anime characters), acts as the conduit to an undiscovered world of special abilities and faction rivalries, exposing an invisible war being fought in the bustling city of Yokohama. However, Asagiri's evolving story about superpowered detectives and mafia bosses is not always about such deathly serious matters, as comedic levity is an integral part of a world plunged into chaos. This bittersweetness elevates "Bungo Stray Dogs" into an experience that one cannot get enough of.

If you’ve been a fan of Bungo Stray Dogs since the beginning, you might have noticed something feels off in the current storyline. The early seasons and manga chapters captured a grounded, almost methodical vibe, pulling us into a world where mysteries were solved with logic, realism, and clever detective work. However, somewhere along the way, it seems like things have drastically changed.

As the series delved deeper into the Decay of Angels arc, the focus shifted. And this shift wasn’t limited to the plot either; it seeped into the characters, the conflicts, and the tone of the series itself. Let’s explore why this change feels so profound and even if Kafka Asagiri decided to return to the original style of Bungo Stray Dogs, why the series might never recapture its old magic.

In a weird twist of events, Sony Group Corporation is reportedly interested in acquiring Kadokawa, a Japanese media conglomerate responsible for the distribution of several famous anime, movies, and games. If this comes true in the next few weeks, Sony will have a huge part in the anime industry and its distribution, along with the gaming and film industry. However, the company already has its hands on other anime companies, such as Crunchyroll, Funimation, and others. Fans are more concerned than excited at this point.

The main concern surrounding this possible acquisition is the responsibility of publishing anime titles falling on Western publishers. It’s something that has almost always guaranteed failure and nobody wants Sony to have this much control over the anime industry. The company already has a 2% stake in Kadokawa and owning them might be going too far for everyone’s comfort.

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Bungo Stray Dogs: Beast
Bungo Stray Dogs: Beast is an official alternate universe of the original Bungo Stray Dogs series, offering a much grimmer and darker take on the characters and events that unfold. Unlike the main storyline, Beast flips roles and explores how the characters fates could have dramatically changed under different circumstances. This alternate reality provides fans with a deeper understanding of the mysterious book in the original timeline and how it partially functions.
Bungo Stray Dogs: Beast doesnt shy away from making the storyline darker than it already was. The main protagonist, Atsushi, is plunged into a role that doesnt fit his kind personality, whereas Akutagawa is pulled into a role most foreign to him. Yet, the greatest and most shocking change comes from none other than Osamu Dazai, who is revealed to have an even greater understanding than anyone first assumed.

Bungo Stray Dogs has many characters who are more intelligent than the average person. In this anime, characters wield their own minds as weapons against enemies and sometimes each other. Major events in Bungo Stray Dogs come from the masterminds behind each ordeal, and the characters who deal with such matters dont do so purely through strength, but through intellect.
Characters in the anime are often defined by either their special ability, brilliant mind, or combination of both. Every key organization, from the Armed Detective Agency to the Port Mafia and the Guild, has uniquely rare minds working within their ranks. Some of these minds act individually or use others as pawns in their plans, creating a situation where only another brilliant mind can put the pieces together.

Dark comedy anime explores suicide themes with witty satire. Osamu Dazai inspired character lacks hero desire, faces irony. Sensei's honesty and lack of ambition inspire others positively.
Summer 2024s collection of anime has gifted anime fans with a slew of new series that are well worth the price of Crunchyroll's subscriptions, but one in particular stands out as a witty and satirical dark comedy about the isekai genre, whose main character is heavily inspired by the real-life historical figure, Osamu Dazai.
