Back in January, Hollywood was rocked by the news that Jeff Baena had taken his own life.
Baena was a filmmaker and the husband of beloved actress Aubrey Plaza.
Known for his sense of humor and effervescent personality, Baena’s death came as a complete shock to those who knew him best.
But sadly, it seems that Jeff’s life was not as picture-perfect as it appeared on the outside.

Aubrey and Jeff closely guarded their privacy, and very little was known about their relationship.
In fact, no one even knew they’d tied the knot until several months later, when Aubrey let it slip in an Instagram post.

Aubrey Plaza and Jeff Baena were separated months before the indie film director and writer’s death in January, according to a new report from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner.
After separating in September 2024 when the actress moved to New York, Baena made “concerning remarks” to Plaza that “prompted her to call a friend to perform a welfare check on her husband” in October, the report obtained by The Hollywood Reporter stated.
Baena had reportedly started going to therapy after the couple had been “experiencing recent marital difficulties” in the months leading up to his death.
The coroner’s office’s report also stated that Plaza received a text message from her late husband on the day of his death at 10:36 a.m. Et. Baena’s body was later discovered inside his L.A. home by his dog walker.

Films about marriage have taken on many forms, but co-dependency within a relationship will have a sort of meta-body horror twist as real-life married couple Alison Brie and Dave Franco test the bounds of personal space in Together. A horror film that made a big splash at this year's Sundance Film Festival, Neon has released the first trailer for the film, and it looks like it could make audiences question their personal boundaries and interpersonal dynamics.
In what has become tradition for Neon when it comes to marketing their horror films, the trailer for Together doesn't give away too much, but it does provide just enough insight to give audiences a hint at what's to come. In the film, Brie and Franco portray Millie and Tim, a married couple who have spent years together. They are at a crossroads in their relationship when they make a move to the country...

Aubrey Plaza made an appearance on the special 50th anniversary episode of Saturday Night Live, introducing musical acts Miley Cyrus and Brittany Howard who sang "Nothing Compares 2 U." It's Plaza's first public appearance since the tragic death of her husband, Jeff Baena, who took his life on Jan. 3, 2025.
During the brief introduction of Miley and Brittany, Plaza wore black pants and jacket along with a tie-dye shirt. Fans of the star quickly recognized that she was honoring her late husband with the shirt. The couple had been together for 10 years when they married in 2021. In an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show in Dec. 2021 (via EW), Plaza discussed their wedding day and explained her husband's love of tie-dye:
"We got married on a whim, literally decided at like 5 p.m. and got married at like, 8:30. Jeff got really into tie-dyeing during the quarantine, so, I decided that Jeff...

Aubrey Plaza Honors Late Husband Jeff Baena on ‘SNL50’ in First Public Appearance at Since His Death
Aubrey Plaza made her first public appearance since the death of her husband Jeff Baena on Saturday Night Live‘s 50th anniversary special.
During the special, which aired Sunday night on NBC, Plaza, who was once an intern on SNL, briefly appeared to introduce musical guests Miley Cyrus and Brittany Howard. However, it was what Plaza was wearing that caught the attention of fans. Along with her dress pants and a blazer, Plaza wore a tie-dye shirt which served as a tribute to her late husband. The reason the tie-dye shirt was so notable was due to Plaza’s previous comments about how the couple wore tie-dye for their spontaneous nuptials.
During a 2021 interview on The Drew Barrymore Show, Plaza had said that the two “got married on a whim” and that tie-dyeing was a hobby Baena grew interested in during the pandemic.

Aubrey Plaza is one of the most sought-after actresses in Hollywood, known for her sharp comedic timing and unique on-screen presence. She has played many memorable roles in both television and movies, often bringing humor and unpredictability to her characters. But when she appeared on Criminal Minds, she completely changed expectations with a performance that was dark and truly chilling.

Real-life couple Alison Brie and Dave Franco are no strangers to collaborating on and off-screen. The actors first played opposite each other in a rom-com entitled The Little Hours, and then proceeded to partner in the making of films like The Rental and Somebody That I Used to Know. Although they've received offers to star in projects together, they've been selective on what to work on next. It was only when they read the script for Together, a body horror indie about a long-time pair whose codependency is put to the test, that the two were immediately onboard. As both the leads and the producers in Michael Shanks' feature directorial debut, the couple were fully invested in making the surreal story tick—even if it requires them to be intimate in ways they've never been before.

Acting couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie have produced a body horror hit. After the success of their new film at the Sundance Film Festival, it will be given a wider release in theaters courtesy of Neon.
Per Variety, Franco and Brie's Together has just been sold to Neon after the film's impressive debut at Sundance. With its early reviews after premiering at the prestigious film festival, Together has a perfect score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. This early praise, coupled with The Substance – another acclaimed body horror film – garnering major award nominations, may have helped seal the deal of Neon swooping in to acquire the distribution rights. Now, filmgoers will just need to wait for the wide release date to be announced. It's always exciting when a new horror film gets picked up, particularly by distributors like A24 or Neon. These companies have a keen eye for great horror content, and more often than not, the films they acquire are usually both unique and boundary-pushing. One of these indie powerhouses just snagged the worldwide rights to a new body horror, and based on what we know so far about this movie, it's something you're going to want to see.
We're talking about Neon, the studio that delivered what is arguably the best horror film of 2024, Longlegs. If you haven't seen Longlegs, maybe you're familiar with other Neon horror movies such as Immaculate, Cuckoo, Possessor and Infinity Pool. Now, the company has another horror flick to add to its lineup, and we're hoping it hits theaters this year.
The film is titled Together, and it stars real-life husband and wife Alison Brie and Dave Franco.

“Together,” a horror film with Dave Franco and Alison Brie, has sold to Neon after premiering at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival. Neon plans to release the movie in theaters on Aug. 1 amid the dog days of summer.
The feature, from first-time writer-director Michael Shanks, was one of the rare Sundance films to spark a bidding war. A24 was also in the running at other point, with other studios kicking the tires. It’s not clear what the final price tag is, but sources said the bidding was well over $10 million at one point. Another source said the final price reached $17 million, which makes it one of the richest deals in Sundance history.

Jeff Baena was an extremely talented writer and director with a unique ability to ground even the most absurd stories in emotional realism. Even though Baena’s films tackled such topics as religious isolation (The Little Hours), mental illness (Horse Girl), and familial trauma (Joshy), the stories he told had a universally relatable quality. Baena notably cast his wife, Aubrey Plaza, in several great roles in which she was given the freedom to be as eccentric as possible; although Plaza risked being typecast after her breakout role in Parks and Recreation, these films gave her the opportunity to take risks on projects that required a great deal of bravery. While they had many successful collaborations, Life After Beth was a surprisingly earnest horror comedy that addressed serious themes of loss, regret, and perseverance.

Director of enjoyably twisted films including Life After Beth, The Little Hours and Spin Me Round
One of the few actor/director couples in the US independent film scene, Aubrey Plaza and Jeff Baena were never keen to discuss their personal lives in detail, but their relationship informed the four enjoyably twisted movies they made together, beginning with the zombie comedy Life After Beth (2014).
Baena, who has taken his own life aged 47, was a shrewd and witty writer-director, while Plaza brought her witheringly sarcastic, cooler-than-thou persona, as well as jaded line readings and a heavy-lidded comic ennui, to the roles he wrote for her. Their films had an emotional depth beneath the deceptively arch or flippant surface.
