Following its recent digital and theatrical release, The Pale Door is headed to Blu-ray and DVD on October 6th:

"Los Angeles (Sept. 3, 2020) – Rlje Films, a business unit of AMC Networks, along with Shudder, AMC Networks’ premium service for horror, thriller and the supernatural, will release the horror/western film The Pale Door on October 6, 2020 on DVD and Blu-ray.

Directed by Aaron B. Koontz (Scare Package) who also co-wrote the script with Cameron Burns (Camera Obscura) and Keith Lansdale (“Creepshow”), The Pale Door stars Devin Druid (“13 Reasons Why”), Zachary Knighton (“Happy Endings”), Noah Segan (Knives Out), Stan Shaw (The Monster Squad), Pat Healy (Cheap Thrills), Bill Sage (We Are What We Are), Melora Walters (“PEN15”, Magnolia) and Natasha Bassett (Hail, Caesar!). Noah Segan may not be a name up there with the likes of Chris Hemsworth, Bradley Cooper or other A-listers in Hollywood, but Segan has been a big part of several major movies, such as Knives Out and Looper, as well as a genre mainstay who brings a welcome presence to whatever he is involved in. For his latest trick, Segan has suited up for a genre mash-up in the form of The Pale Door.

The latest from director Adam B. Koontz is a blend of western and horror the likes of which cinema just simply doesn't see that often, if ever. It focuses on the Dalton gang who make their way to a seemingly welcoming brothel in a ghost town after a train robbery goes south on them. One of my favorite horror anthologies to come out in some time is Scare Package, which was conceived by Aaron B. Koontz and Cameron Burns and features an array of filmmaking talent, including Emily Hagins, Chris McInroy, Noah Segan, Baron Vaughn, Anthony Cousins, and Courtney and Hillary Andujar. The film hits Shudder exclusively today, and to mark the occasion, Daily Dead recently spoke with Koontz about the project, and how it was a labor of love created between him and a group of friends.

Koontz also discussed why it was important to him that Scare Package became a showcase for those who had been cutting their teeth in the world of short films, celebrating what fans love about the horror genre, and how Aew wrestler Dustin Rhodes got involved with Scare Package to pull off a very special role in the film.

As a producer, Aaron B. Koontz has helped bring some of the most thought-provoking horror films to life in recent years. This past summer saw the release of Koontz's feature-length directorial debut, Camera Obscura, and Koontz and his Paper Street Pictures production company are wasting no time moving forward on their next project, Scare Package, a horror comedy anthology that he's overseeing with Cameron Burns. In addition to directing his own segment, Koontz is bringing together some of the most exciting independent filmmakers in horror for Scare Package, and we recently caught up with Koontz for our latest Q&A feature to discuss assembling the creative team and subverting subgenres in his new anthology.

Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Aaron. When and how did you and Cameron Burns come up with the idea for the new horror anthology Scare Package?

June ended up being a particularly busy month of releases, and here’s a look at three different indie films that I had the opportunity to check out over the last several weeks:

Camera Obscura: For his feature film directorial debut, co-writer/director Aaron B. Koontz concocts his own “weird episode of Goosebumps” (to borrow a phrase from the film) in Camera Obscura, which feels like a mash-up of Shutter (the original, not the remake) and Final Destination, with a bit of a slasher twist thrown in for good measure. Koontz deftly maneuvers through familiar genre tropes to create an unexpected horror treat, anchored by a strong performance from Christopher Denham (Shutter Island, The Bay).

In Camera Obscura, we meet photographer Jack Zeller (Denham), who has been struggling with Ptsd after returning from shooting photos in the Middle East. His supportive fiancée, Claire (Nadja Bobyleva), decides to pick him...

As a producer on projects like Starry Eyes and The Sacrament, Camera Obscura co-writer/director Aaron B. Koontz has been a fixture of the indie horror film community for some time now. Koontz recently celebrated the VOD and On Demand release of his debut feature, Camera Obscura, which ambitiously blends together the psychological horror/haunted camera/slasher genres for a truly unexpected cinematic treat.

Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to speak to Koontz about his experiences working on Camera Obscura, and he discussed how he approached both the story of the film as well as its conflicted protagonist, Jack Zeller (portrayed by Christopher Denham), how his earlier career helped prepare him to take the directorial reins, the joy of being able to collaborate with friends, and more.

Its title proves the most evocative element of Aaron B. Koontz’s horror thriller that fails to live up to its considerable ambitions. Concerning a Ptsd-afflicted war photographer who discovers that his antique camera delivers grisly predictions of future murders, Camera Obscura squanders its intriguing premise with a ham-fisted execution. Ultimately lapsing into a series of genre cliches, the film falls apart after a promising start.

Chiller Films is releasing Aaron B. Koontz's horror thriller Camera Obscura on VOD and Digital HD tomorrow. The film opened in U.S. cinemas on Friday. On Friday, June 9th, Aaron B. Koontz’s Camera Obscura hits theaters before making its way onto VOD platforms everywhere just a few days later on the 13th. The psychological horror film stars Christopher Denham (Money Monster, The Bay), Nadja Bobyleva (Bridge of Spies), Noah Segan (Looper, Starry Eyes, Brick), and also features some other stellar supporting talent that should be familiar to genre fans, including Chase Williamson (John Dies at the End, Beyond the Gates), Andrew Sensenig (We Are Still Here), and Gretchen Lodge (Lovely Molly).

In photography, camera obscura is an optical trick that occurs when images are projected through small holes in walls, boxes or other screens. The photographic illusion is more sinister in Aaron B. Koontz’s slow-burning horror film, but it proves less compelling than its centuries-old namesake. Though born of an inventive idea, “Camera Obscura” comes out underdeveloped.

“The nightmare is always the same,” Jack (Christopher Denham) says to his therapist in the film’s quiet opening minutes. What he tells her concerns an insect, a trail of blood and other signifiers that all is not well in his subconscious, where “death always wins” and the ghosts of his past refuse to stay there. A veteran war photographer, he’s so disturbed by memories of what he captured with his camera during his deployment that he’s sworn off his former hobby/profession altogether. The film is about a veteran war photographer who returns from Afghanistan with Ptsd. Saban Films has picked up North American rights to Shot Caller by Bold Films and Participant Media starring Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Lake Bell, and Jon Bernthal.

Ric Roman Waugh directed the crime drama about an ex-con forced by gang leaders to orchestrate a major crime with a rival gang in Southern California. Emory Cohen, Omari Hardwick and Benjamin Bratt round out the key cast.

Waugh produced through his Cadre Filmworks alongside Jonathan King of Participant Media, and Bold Films’ Michel Litvak and Gary Michael Walters.

Bold Films’ Jeffrey Stott and Lisa Zambri, Rhodes Entertainment’s Matthew Rhodes, and Participant Media’s Jeff Skol serve as executive producers.

Exclusive: Producer Andrew van den Houten’s fledgling New York-based finance, sales, distribution company has boarded world sales rights ahead of the film’s world premiere at Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal on July 21.

Music video director Michael Reich’s feature debut is based on his experiences as a dog groomer and follows a character with artistic ambitions who inhabits a lo-fi dreamscape that explodes when he meets a special woman.

Reich said She’s Allergic To Cats was funded entirely by savings accrued from his work as a body double for one of the Daft Punk robots, a role he has performed since 2005 when he starred in Electroma.
