This YouTube video short caught the attention of Conan O'Brien, who employed his company Conaco to help creator Olan Rogers pitch it as a pilot for a full series. TBS, Comedy Central, Fox, FX, YouTube, and Fullscreen were all interested, with TBS winning the ensuing bidding war and producing the full show Final Space (2018), which started airing in 2018.
Based off an older hand-drawn animation series called 'Gary Space', made by Olan Rogers and released on his YouTube channel, telling the story of the stranded space explorer Gary Space, befriending a small green alien whom he names "Mooncake". Originally meant to be ten episodes, Rogers decided to stop after three episodes and reboot the series as a more professionally animated cartoon, renamed 'Final Space'. This resulted in Final Space (2016), a short video pitched as a pilot for a full series, which later became Final Space (2018).
