Barbie Movie Cast and Character Guide
Image
Margot Robbie leads the critically acclaimed Barbiemovie, and it features plenty of notable faces in the supporting cast as well. For the most part, the characters are directly inspired by toys that have been released over the years or are original Barbie movie characters. Of course, this means that the long-beloved Mattel toys Barbie and Ken are not just two people.

Instead, the Truman Show-esque Barbieland is populated with plenty of Barbies and Kens. Still, each character has its place in the story, and they all help make this version of Barbieland vibrant and memorable. Most of these characters are portrayed by familiar faces for fans to look for.

Updated by Jordan Iacobucci on March 7, 2025: Following the smash success of the first live-action Barbie movie in 2023, all eyes are on Greta Gerwig as she works toward making a sequel. While news on this front is still scarce, fans know...

These companies are behind some of the most popular British sitcoms of recent times, like Derry Girls, Two Doors Down, Friday Night Dinner, Stath Lets Flats, and Such Brave Girls, all of which have won BAFTAs.

While details are under wraps, it’s confirmed that these writers’ rooms are now open and assembling their teams. Each company is expected to develop a pilot script, episode outlines, and a full writing team. There’s potential for more than one new sitcom to hit our screens.

BBC Comedy Boss Tells Producers To Stop Pitching Dramedies & Locate Their “Funny Bones”
Image
Comedy producers have been told to locate their “funny bones” when pitching shows to the BBC by the most powerful person in British comedy commissioning.

Jon Petrie, who runs BBC comedy, set out his “firmly sitcoms first” stall in a speech this morning in Glasgow.

He urged producers to “send us less shows that are ‘an exploration’ of something and more that know where their funny bones are,” citing the likes of Ghosts, Motherland and Two Doors Down as examples of the “comedy first proposals” he is after.

Petrie has not held back on his desire for sitcoms since taking on the job a couple of years ago and announced a raft of new and returning shows this morning at the BBC Comedy Festival.

But he said his team is “not getting pitched enough of the comedy we need to keep people happy” and is instead over-stocked with dramedies, which...

Image
Simon Carlyle, the co-creator of hit BBC sitcom Two Doors Down, has died aged 48.

Carlyle’s manager Amanda Davis confirmed the news in a statement to Pa Media.

“I am immensely sorry to confirm that Simon Carlyle has died at the age of 48,” Davis said.

“Simon was a wonderful person and a major comedic talent. He was much respected across the industry both for the quality of his writing and for being a kind, funny, supportive and nurturing collaborator. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies go to his family, friends and colleagues.”

With Gregor Sharp, Carlyle was the co-creator of Scottish BBC sitcom Two Doors Down, which stars the likes of Arabella Weir and Alex Norton as neighbours in a suburban street in Scotland, who are “all a bit nuts,” according to an interview with Carlyle several years ago.

The show has been hugely popular, running for six seasons on BBC Two...

‘Prince Andrew: The Musical’: Emma Sidi Lands Emily Maitlis Role In Musical Comedy About Controversial Royal
Image
Emma Sidi has landed the role of broadcaster and MacTaggart Lecture giver Emily Maitlis in Channel 4’s upcoming satire Prince Andrew: The Musical.

Maitlis’ bombshell BBC interview on Newsnight with Prince Andrew, in which the royal denied a friendship with convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein and made several eyebrow-raising statements, led to cascade of events that saw him step back from royal duty.

Maitlis has since left the BBC and was credited for delivering a barnstorming MacTaggart at this year’s Edinburgh TV Festival. The musical special will feature a reimagining of her interview with Prince Andrew, with emerging British comedy star Sidi playing the journalist.

Kieran Hodgson (Two Doors Down), who has written the show to a musical score along with Freddie Tapner, plays the royal and will focus on events, relationships and controversies in his life.

Further central cast announced today are Munya Chawawa as Prince Charles and Jenny Bede as Prince Andrew’s former wife Sarah Ferguson.

Also cast are Joe Wilkinson as a newspaper vendor; Harry Enfield (Harry Enfield and Friends) as Prime Minister Tony Blair and Baga Chipz (RuPaul’s Drag Race UK) as Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

Hat Trick Productions is making Prince Andrew: The Musical, with Adam Reeve producing and Stu Mather and Jimmy Mulville the executive producers. Hodgson is an associate producer.

ITV Lines Up Autobiographical Alan Carr Comedy ‘Changing Ends’ With ‘Belfast’s Oliver Savile Playing Comedian’s Younger Self
Image
British network ITV has ordered Changing Ends, an autobiographical scripted comedy based on stand-up and presenter Alan Carr’s life.

Gavin & Stacey and Alan Partridge producer Baby Cow Productions is making the six-part comedy, which Carr is co-writing with Simon Carlyle (Two Doors Down). It will follow Carr’s life in Northampton, England in the 1980s, growing up as the son of a fourth division football manager.

Carr will star as himself in the present day, with Oliver Save (Belfast) taking on the role of a younger Alan. Further casting will follow closer to the show’s broadcast.

ITV said the series would be “told with warmth and wit” and would be more “than just a trip down memory lane, it’s a love letter to a time and a town where things weren’t always so inclusive.” Carr, who is known for his talk show Alan Carr: Chatty Man and his stand-up comedy,...

‘Still Working 9 to 5’ Review: Well-Crafted Doc Succeeds as Both ‘Making of’ Celebration and Cautionary Reminder
Image
Viewed with 20/20 hindsight, all of history appears inevitable simply because it went to the trouble of happening. More than four decades after it defied skeptics, entertained millions, and hit the No. 2 spot (just behind “The Empire Strikes Back”) on the list of top-grossing 1980 movies, green-lighting “9 to 5” might now appear to be one of those surefire, no-brainer decisions made by Hollywood brass with absolute certainty of striking box-office gold. It wasn’t, of course, and reminding us of just how dicey a proposition it really was back in the day is just one of the enlightening and amusing elements of “Still Working 9 to 5.”

Documentarians Camille Hardman and Gary Lane do a splendidly entertaining job of showing how the comedy came together, with Jane Fonda — then at the height of her star power with two Oscars under her belt — and producing partner Bruce Gilbert serving as the driving forces for...

GLAAD Honors ‘Pose,’ ‘Schitt’s Creek’ and ‘Booksmart’
Image
It’s no surprise that politics took center stage at this year’s GLAAD Media Awards.

While Rachel Maddow accepted her award for outstanding TV journalism segment for her interview with Pete Buttigeig on “The Rachel Maddow Show,“ she said, “We are at a point where an openly gay TV host can accept an award for an interview with an openly gay major presidential candidate. Progress in this country is very rarely linear, and it barely happens on its own. If you are at all inspired by the progress you see, please vote, organize, run for office, and if you’re enraged by the regression that you see, please vote, organize and run for office.”

Since 1990, GLAAD Media Awards has celebrated the visibility of LGBTQ experiences in media and honored accurate and inclusive representations of queer people or color. In lieu of its usual glamorous setup in New York City,...

Sam Haskell (‘Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings’ producer): Dolly is ‘beloved by the world because she loves the world back’ [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
“We should all walk humbly through this life, but if there’s ever been anyone who deserves a ‘thank you’ or pat-on-the-back, it’s Dolly Parton,” declares Sam Haskell, executive producer of the Netflix anthology series “Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings.” In our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video above), he adds, “She is an international icon beloved by the world because she loves the world back.”

Parton, Haskell and the producing team debuted the eight-part series last November. Each episode is based on a story from one of her songs, including “These Old Bones” starring Kathleen Turner and Ginnifer Goodwin, which is entered this summer on the Emmy ballot in the TV movie category. He says that Netflix jokingly refers to their movie as “Blonde Mirror” after successfully entering “Black Mirror” in this same category the past few years.

The last time legendary entertainer Dolly Parton had a project for television, she and her team were nominated at the Emmys for Best TV Movie. That bid in 2017 was for “Christmas of Many Colors: Circle of Love,” a story based on her early life in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee.

She has now returned to television with “Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings,” an eight-part anthology series based on stories from her songs, including “These Old Bones,” which is entered this summer on the Emmy ballot in the TV movie category. In our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video above), she reveals, “When we got Kathleen Turner, we were so lucky to get her. She did an incredible job of playing the character of Old Bones. ‘Heartstrings’ Review (Netflix)
Having been an (albeit relaxed) fan of Dolly Parton for some while, I was so excited to watch her new Netflix original series Heartstrings and the series gave me everything it needed to and more!

Heartstrings completely captures the essence of Dolly Parton through and through. This means that if you are a fan of hers then you Have To watch this series as it revolves around her career, songs and life. Each episode is based on important themes that I know Dolly personally feels passionate about such as religion, the supernatural, family and feminism. The latter being one of the key themes in this series, one very memorable scene on this idea is where an impassioned character gives a strong message about the ‘damsel in distress’ trope. All these themes are very on-brand for Dolly Parton and it was great to see a show that was so specific to...

Hear Dolly Parton’s New Strings-Only Version of ‘Jolene’
Dolly Parton
Dolly Parton’s iconic 1973 hit “Jolene” gets stripped of powder and paint in the Hall of Fame legend’s just-released “strings only” version from the soundtrack of the upcoming Netflix film Dumplin’. With strings backing her new, slowed-down vocal, Parton’s lyrics are rendered even more pleading, drenched in a greater sense of fear and sorrow.

“Jolene’s been on the prowl a long time,” Parton said in a Twitter post, “but she just got a makeover and I couldn’t be more excited to share the new string version with y’all!

Karen Gillan Directed and Starred in a Film Called The Party's Just Beginning and Here's The Trailer
Karen Gillan is best know for her roles in Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Who, and Jungle Book, but the actress has also just directed her first movie! It’s called The Party’s Just Beginning and the trailer for the movie has been released.

The movie is described as a “surreal coming of age story told from the perspective of a young Scottish woman (Karen Gillan) trying to cope with the suicide of her best friend and struggling to confront what's truly haunting her.” As a coping mechanism to deal with her life issues, she resorts to having sex and drinking alcohol.

I’ve been a fan of Gillan since her days on Doctor Who and it’s been great to see her film career thrive. Now, she’s getting behind the camera to tell stories and it will be interesting to see where this directing career path leads her.
