If you’ve been following what new original movies have recently dropped on various streaming services, you’ve likely noticed a wave of fresh releases tied into the arrival of the holiday season. Disney+ had Dashing Through the Snow, Peacock has dropped Genie, and Amazon is delivering Candy Cane Lane at the start of December 2023. These Yuletide features are meant to draw further attention to major streaming services, but they also reinforce how movie theaters in recent years have been totally devoid of new Christmas-themed titles. Early November used to be a go-to time to launch theatrical titles tied into the holiday season, but nowadays, it’s incredibly rare to see major studios launch such titles in theaters.

While you can always rely on Hallmark and other channels to provide a frankly overwhelming number of new Christmas movies each year, the streaming services have all been slower to crank out their own Yuletide romcoms and North Pole-centric misadventures. This year there are a solid half-dozen options among four streamers, starring plenty of familiar faces going through the usual holiday hijinks in suburbia: Christmas cards, delayed toy delivery, body swaps. If you’ve seen it before, you can expect it again with pretty paper and a bow!

Not only do Disney have a second season of The Santa Clauses being released this holiday season, they also have a handful of new festive movies coming too. The first of which is Dashing Through the Snow.
Ludacris plays a divorced social worker who despises Christmas after a painful childhood memory but has to spend Christmas Eve on a call with his daughter and a man who very much loves Christmas.
I think this movie’s biggest problem is that it seems to try to have several different stories run alongside each other, with the lead one just being ‘daughter tries to convince her Dad that Christmas is a happy time of year’. There are some weird subplots here that of course involve Santa and reindeer,...

Best. Christmas. Ever. receives widespread criticism and lacks holiday cheer. Many modern Christmas movies disappoint due to rehashed storylines. There are a few exceptions, such as Spirited and The Christmas Chronicles, that are well-received.
When it comes to Christmas movies, there are around 25 undeniable classics that will be welcomed home for the holidays every year. While many of these titles are from decades gone by, that hasn’t stopped each year delivering some new potential festive favorites, especially thanks to the increase in streaming services over the last few years. This year Netflix’s offering of the loftily titled Best. Christmas. Ever. has proven that you can’t judge a movie by its title, as the film has been roasted online like the turkey many viewers believe it to be.
Best. Christmas. Ever. is a romantic comedy from Mary Lambert, a veteran of the industry best known for directing the original version of Pet Sematary.

Eddie Garrick must confront his past traumas and rediscover his faith in Christmas to reunite his family in Dashing Through The Snow. The movie is a non-traditional version of a holiday film, with elements of a buddy cop movie and a touch of holiday magic. Director Tim Story's style, working with talented comedians like Lil Rel Howery and Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, allowed for improvisation and finding the right rhythm for each scene.
Eddie Garrick must face his past traumas surrounding Christmas if he has any chance of reuniting his family in Dashing Through The Snow. At his estranged wife's request, Eddie takes their nine-year-old daughter Charlotte with him to work on Christmas Eve, where they meet a man named Nick wearing a Santa suit. Convinced Nick is delusional, Eddie refuses to believe that this could in fact be Santa, but when he and Charlotte are pulled into a magical...

Dashing Through The Snow Interview: Chris "Ludacris" Bridges & Lil Rel Howery On A New Kind Of Santa
Dashing Through The Snow is a fun and original Christmas movie that combines elements of Miracle on 34th Street and Midnight Run. Lil Rel Howery brings a human and comedic touch to his version of Santa Claus, adding a new dimension to the mythology of the character.

His estranged wife asks him to take their nine-year-old daughter Charlotte with him to work on Christmas Eve when they meet a strange man named Nick wearing a Santa suit. Genies, at least in pop culture, have long been comic foils. Way back in 1940, in “The Thief of Bagdad,” Rex Ingram played Djinn, the movie’s larger-than-life genie — 100 feet tall in his ponytail and red diaper — as a sly, laughing soul man of lighthearted effrontery. The surrealist ’60s sitcom “I Dream of Jeannie” featured Barbara Eden, in diaphanous harem silks, as a magical servant/housewife, blinking her eyes to teleport her clueless “master” out of trouble. And Robin Williams’ vocal performance as the Genie in “Aladdin” may have come closer than any of his other film performances to channeling Williams the free-associational joke geyser.
So in “Genie,” when Melissa McCarthy pops out of a jewel box and reveals herself to be an ancient granter of wishes named Flora, it’s hardly a surprise that 1) the character is a complete lark, and 2) the whole joke is that Flora, though she hasn...

Some might say they don’t want a lot for Christmas, but who’s going to turn down a Christmas movie starring rapper-actor Chris “Ludacris” Bridges and comedian Lil Rel Howery?
Directed by Tim Story, and produced by Will Packer’s Will Packer Productions, comes the comedic fantasy film “Dashing Through the Snow,” which carries the title of the classic Christmas jingle “Dashing Through the Snow (Jingle Bells).”
In the lighthearted tale, Bridges stars as Eddie Garrick, a social worker who no longer believes in the magic of Christmas due to a traumatic childhood experience. But, with the help of his Christmas-loving daughter Charlotte (Madison Skye Validum) and good ol’ Saint Nick — who just goes by Nick (Lil Rel Howery) — the group is on a mission to restore Eddie’s faith in Christmas while evading wicked politician Conrad Harf (Oscar Nuñez).

Chris “Ludacris” Bridges never planned on being an actor when he started his rap career during the late ’90s. He attributes his successful transition from music to acting to late writer-director John Singleton, who gave him his breakout role as Tej Parker in the “The Fast and the Furious” (2001) sequel “2 Fast 2 Furious” (2003).
During a discussion about his new role as Eddie Garrick in Disney+’s new Christmas movie “Dashing Through the Snow,” Bridges discussed his more than 20-year career as an actor, and how acting initially was never “part of the plan.”
While his debut role was playing an unsatisfied customer in record producer and filmmaker DJ Pooh’s comedy “The Wash” (2001), it wasn’t until Singleton cast him as a former street racer and mechanic that his acting career went full speed ahead.

Try as we might, we withered gothic souls can only hold the line and extend October's scary vibes into November for so long. But with so few viewing options specific to the month (although horror fans now have a bountiful feast to indulge in around Turkey Day thanks to Eli Roth's satisfyingly sleazy slasher "Thanksgiving"), many people tend to spend this time of year diving head-first into Christmas entertainment. The streaming services of the world have sat up and taken notice, too, as evidenced by the endless ads for "Dashing Through the Snow" on Disney+ that popped up on my Roku menu over the past week.

Eddie's lack of belief in Santa Claus is significant because it renders Santa's powers impotent and prevents him from using his magic. Eddie's childhood trauma and his family's broken Christmas experience contribute to his disbelief in Santa and the holiday spirit. Eddie finally regains his belief in Santa when he is reminded of the innocence of childhood through a letter he wrote to Santa as a child, allowing him to recognize Santa's abilities and restore his faith in the Christmas spirit.
At the end of Dashing Through the Snow, Santa gets his power back because Eddy learns to believe, and a congressman's bribery scheme is thwarted. Dashing Through the Snow is a Disney original Christmas movie released on Disney+ directed by Tim Story featuring performances from Lil Rel Howery, Chris 'Ludacris' Bridges, Tyonah Parris, Oscar Nuñez, and more.

In “Dashing Through the Snow,” Lil Rel Howery has the off-the-cuff funk energy of a hustler who’s so quick that you believe his spiel before you’ve had the chance to outthink it. The whole issue of believing is key to the movie, since Howery plays Santa Claus — or, perhaps, a petty criminal who’s pretending to be Santa Claus. The character calls himself Nick, and he’s dressed as a variation on the old-school Victorian Santa: half-frame glasses, a coat festooned with gold buttons and paramilitary shoulder flaps, a vest of gold finery, along with a few token bits of street cool.
Howery’s line readings sound improvised, and that’s a good thing. He’s the ebullient, fast-talking spark plug of a formula comedy with a cheap engine, though one that putters along harmlessly enough. Not so long ago, there were maybe three or four Christmas movies per holiday season.

Given how he started his career, as a rapper and then as a star in the Fast and Furious franchise, it would have seemed unlikely to see Chris “Ludacris” Bridges starring in … a Christmas movie. Imagine being “impish” on Christmas day and getting smacked by Belsnickel with a broomstick! That’s how watching director Tim Story’s latest film, Dashing Through the Snow, feels. Every year, we have a slew of “Christmas-themed” movies around this time, and the majority of those range from mediocre to bad. In fact, the number of bad “Christmas movies” has grown significantly with the likes of Netflix and other Ott’s taking the reins of entertainment. Dashing Through the Snow is a Disney+ Hotstar product, and it’s not much different from the ones you see on Netflix, except there’s barely any romance here, and the target audience is most likely kids and young teens.
So what do we have here? A grown man who really hates Christmas is so original, right? Anyway, Eddie has his reasons for feeling the way he does about everyone’s favorite holiday. And yes,...

Santa season is in full swing. But with Dashing Through the Snow, audiences may relish the creative twists offered by stars Chris “Ludacris” Bridges (Fast X) and Lil Rel Howery. The performers elevate this seasonal comedy about a divorced social worker named Eddie (Ludacris) who has lost the Christmas spirit due to a traumatic childhood experience. Directed by Tim Story, who made a dent this year with The Blackening, the comedy is produced by Will Packer and written by Scott Rosenberg of TV’s High Fidelity, Cowboy Bebop, and From.
The heartwarming tale finds Eddie and his nine-year-old daughter Charlotte (Madison Skye Validum) meeting a mysterious fellow in a red suit named Nick (Howery). The guy thinks he’s Santa. Eddie wants to help. But there’s a twisted subplot here in the vein of Home Alone that sends the film soaring to comedic heights. Oscar Nuñez, Teyonah Parris, and...

Every time Lil Rel Howery watches his new Disney+ film “Dashing Through the Snow,” he gets “emotional” seeing a Black Santa.
“Because, it’s like, you see Black Santa – [Chris “Ludacris” Bridges” and I] were talking about this earlier – when you see the end of the movie, like, every time I see the end of it, and I’m like, ‘Is it weird because it’s me?’ But, I always get emotional,” Howery, who plays Santa “Nick” Claus in the film, told TheWrap. “Like, wow, just to see Santa fly through the air. That’s a Black Santa. He’s waving. It’s just a beautiful thing because we don’t see that often. I’m actually very honored and cannot wait to see how children react to this because I do think it’s so very special what we did with the representation.”

Dashing Through the Snow is a heartwarming Disney+ holiday comedy with a clever spin on the usual Christmas fare. Lil Rel Howery continues an incredible year (with Poker Face and The Mill). Chris ‘Ludacris’ Bridges and LIl Rel Howery try, and fail, to bring life to a shoddily assembled family movie incapable of delivering baseline cheer
For a child on Christmas morning, there’s no disappointment greater than ripping the paper off a present to find that Mom and Dad skimped on quality control – a wish for the latest MP3 player granted as a brandless kidney bean capable of holding a total of 16 songs, or a SpongeBob plushie labeled “Rectangle Friend” with one eye pointing the wrong way due to substandard Taiwanese assembly. It’s what the kid asked for, technically, and yet an essential quality of authenticity has been lost somewhere along the way. Something just ain’t right.
