The 2000s were a peak time for shojo anime, and many of the demographic’s most iconic titles came from this decade. Beloved hits such as Fruits Basket, Nana, and Ouran High School Host Club dominated the scene and helped shape shojo into what it is today. However, with so many legendary 2000s series taking the spotlight, many lesser-known titles got overlooked.
From obscure magical girl anime like Princess Tutu to reboots of old-school shojo masterpieces, such as the 2005 Glass Mask series, 2000s shojo offers many hidden gems that never got the love and attention they deserve. Though they never reached the popularity of mainstream favorites, these classic shojo anime are just as amazing and worth watching.

The "mean girl" archetype is prominent throughout all media, including anime. In fact, anime is home to many iconic characters who fit this bill, from Fruits Basket's Motoko Minagawa to Sae Kashiwagi from Peach Girl. Mean girls add extra drama and excitement to their series, and despite their ill-tempered personalities, they're often fan favorites.
Anime mean girls come in all shapes and sizes. Each has their own unique reasons for their sassy attitude, be it love, jealousy, or personal gain. Sometimes these bullies turn a new leaf, but many never learn from their bad behavior. Either way, they're some of the most interesting characters around, and fans love their spunk.

Stereotyping has been a long-standing issue with Japanese anime, especially in shojo. Even when a series features a diversified character, they either have no value to offer to the plot or are extremely marginalized. For instance, most foreign characters in anime are blond and uncomfortably stand out even if they're of Japanese origin.
The racialization of beauty, especially the portrayal of white-skinned characters as "beautiful," hasn't been aging well with the fans. The audience can hardly find an anime where characters of other "colors" have been given the spotlight. Even though it was released way back in 2005, Peach Girl is one of those rare rom-coms that has addressed this unhealthy obsession with white skin through its lead.
