The following contains The Flash spoilers.
The Flash Season 9 Episode 1
The end of an era is upon us. After nine seasons, over 170 episodes and what feels like an endless assortment of speedsters, rogues, and various other metahumans, The Flash will end at the conclusion of its ninth season. And while the show is, thankfully, at least getting the chance to go out on its own terms, it’s still hard not to grieve its loss—particularly when both the genre and network it helped establish are in such a state of severe flux.
On the plus side, the season 9 premiere “Wednesday Ever After” is one of the series’ best episodes in ages, an hour that fully embraces the bright tone, genuine humor, and huge heart that have always been so key to this show’s identity. The episode deftly balances entertaining comedy with emotional heft, setting up themes and character...

Bono sang for his mother only once in public before her death in 1974. In an excerpt shared from his upcoming memoir Surrender, out Nov. 1, the musician, who has spent the past few decades of his life on stage, recalled how his mother’s death ultimately pushed him into becoming a rockstar.
In the chapter titled “Iris (Hold Me Close),” named after the U2 song inspired by his mother, Bono recalled the day his mother unexpectedly died of a brain aneurysm – the same cause of death shared by two of her...

Like some kind of cinematic equivalent of the vault in the Tower of London where the Crown jewels are stored, the stage-to-screen adaptation Allelujah piles a number of “national treasures” atop one another: a script based on a play from 2018 by national treasure Alan Bennett (The Madness of King George); a cast featuring such treasured national stars as Judi Dench, Derek Jacobi and Jennifer Saunders; direction from feted theater and film veteran Richard Eyre (Iris, Notes on a Scandal) and so on. It’s all rolled up in a story about the institution every Brit most loves to love and moan about in equal measure, the National Health Service. What could possibly go wrong?
At the risk of having my Leave to Remain resident status in the U.K. revoked, I am sad to report that Allelujah the film is something of a disappointment.

When the supporting acting Oscar categories were introduced in 1937, two films (“Dodsworth” and “Romeo and Juliet”) each received one lead and one supporting nomination. A third, “My Man Godfrey,” immediately made Oscar history by scoring a nomination in each of the four categories. In all three cases, the supporting nominees had less screen time than the corresponding leads, as was and continues to be expected.
The opposite did not occur until 1950, when John Ireland was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for a longer performance in “All the King’s Men” than the one given by his co-star, Best Actor-winner Broderick Crawford. Since then, 10 more supporting male nominees have boasted higher screen time totals than their lead-nominated co-stars. Here is a look at each instance, in order from lowest screen time difference to highest.
1997: William H. Macy (“Fargo”) – 27 minutes, 7 seconds

Phoebe Bridgers is ringing in the holiday season with a cover of Merle Haggard’s “If We Make It Thru December.”
Bridgers’ version of the 1973 track opens with a somber piano, as she sings about unemployment and isolation — particularly fitting for a year like 2020. “Got laid off down at the factory/And their timing’s not the greatest in the world,” she sings. “Heaven knows I’ve been working hard/Wanted Christmas to be right for my girl.”

They took very different paths getting there, but Kate Winslet and Glenn Close could both join the small club of eight-time Oscar nominees this season. Winslet is currently in fifth place in our Best Actress odds for “Ammonite,” while Close is predicted to win Best Supporting Actress for “Hillbilly Elegy.”
If they make the cut, they’d be the sixth and seventh actors to accrue eight bids. Only eight people have more, the most, of course, being 21, amassed by Meryl Streep. The first five eight-time nominees are Marlon Brando, Jack Lemmon, Peter O’Toole, Geraldine Page and Denzel Washington. All won at least once except for O’Toole, who is the most nominated performer without a victory, a title Close would share if she loses again. Winslet doesn’t have to worry about that since she won her Oscar for “The Reader” (2008) in Best Actress.

Phoebe Bridgers has a remarkable ability to invest seemingly banal scenes with profound emotion. On this year’s Punisher, she showed she could make a bored visit to an overseas 7/11 or an argument at a Whole Foods feel as deep and meaningful as the funeral on her first album. In moments like those, she lets the everyday settings heighten the feelings in her words by contrast, using that sense of familiarity to surprise you with how much you care about what she’s singing.
It turns out she can do...

On Election Day, Phoebe Bridgers promised to cover the Goo Goo Dolls’ “Iris” if Donald Trump lost. With Joe Biden as our President-elect, Bridgers has officially released the rendition — with Maggie Rogers lending a hand on vocals.
The duo harmonize on the chorus, with Bridgers taking the first verse and Rogers singing the second. When Bridgers initially teased the cover, Rogers responded, “U need some harmonies for that special tune?” To which Bridgers replied, “I’d give up forever to harmonize with you.”

Powerful, deeply affecting films, from Relic to Dick Johnson Is Dead, are dispensing with worthiness and restraint to present the illness in a more robust and truthful way
I’ve yet to see a film that sufficiently gets to the heart of what it means to watch a loved one lose their mind to dementia. Those that have garnered attention and awards over the years, while incredibly affecting, are suffused with a worthiness or restraint that somehow neglects the dementia that I have witnessed. There are some notable exceptions: Michael Haneke’s Amour and Tamara Jenkins’ The Savages do well to convey the more savage aspects of the disease. But, on the whole, films dealing in dementia – an umbrella term that relates to the decline of brain function, interfering with memory, mental acuity, movement, spatial awareness, language and everyday activities such as making a cup of tea or buttoning up a cardigan – have felt lacking.

Phoebe Bridgers, Paramore’s Hayley Williams, and Margo Price all performed songs during the Ruth Bader Ginsburg tribute, Honor Her Wish, on Monday, October 12th.
Snippets of each performance — and a few others — were posted on the Twitter account of Demand Justice, the group that organized the event. Bridgers delivered a simple but striking rendition of “Graceland Too” from her most recent album, Punisher, as a portrait of Rbg sat on a mantle in the background.

The Flash season 6 ended with the Mirror Mistress undefeated and the overarching plot still unresolved, as a consequence of production being shut down before it was supposed to. What this means is that we’ve got months to theorize about what could happen next in Team Flash’s ongoing battle with Eva McCulloch. For one, we know that Iris is still stuck in the Mirrorverse. But what if she’s not the only one? What if Barry is, too, and the one we’ve been watching is really a duplicate?
That’s the wild idea this theory suggested by ScreenRant runs with, but there is actually a fair amount of evidence to back it up in the last few episodes of season 6. To start with, episode 19 “Success is Assured” saw Barry confronted with Mirror Singh who, on behalf of Eva, offered to release Iris if Team Flash let her kill her husband,...

Our “In My Room” Igtv video series has had Brian Wilson, Lucinda Williams, Nick Lowe, and many others performing from their homes. The latest to participate: Johnny Rzeznik of the Goo Goo Dolls.
Before Covid-19 hit, the Goo Goo Dolls were on tour in the U.K., playing music off 2019’s Miracle Pill, their 12th album. Rzeznik has said he wrote it about “living in a state of this chronic, low-grade anxiety. And I think it’s really starting to wear people down.”

Viewers have been ahead of Barry Allen for the duration of The Flash season 6B as, while we all know the truth about Iris, the Scarlet Speedster is unaware that his wife is actually an evil duplicate and the real Iris is trapped in the mirrorverse. He’s bound to find out eventually, however, and star Grant Gustin has teased what the fallout will be for the West-Allens once he does.
The actor spoke to TV Line and hinted that, at some point soon, Barry will get “suspicious” of his spouse, which will cause him to realize that things haven’t been as they seemed for a long while.
“I think Barry has had enough distractions to not catch on as much as he should have sometimes,” Gustin said. “I’m sure viewers are screaming at Barry in certain moments, like, ‘How are you not realizing that something is off?...

Netflix giveth and Netflix taketh away. Everyone who uses streaming services will know that as rights deals expire, movies come and go from various platforms. However, May looks to be an especially tough month for Netflix, with a lot of amazing films departing. This includes classics like Goodfellas, The Dirty Dozen, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and Blade Runner: The Final Cut.
But surely the most missed will be Frank Darabont’s beloved The Shawshank Redemption. The pic is comfortably at the top of the IMDb Top 250 and its story of being confined and dreaming of escape has to appeal to viewers stuck inside due to Coronavirus lockdown.
Here’s the full list of what’s leaving:

This week on The Flash, Cisco and Cecile endeavored to exorcise Eobard from Nash, while Barry, Joe and Mirror-Iris encountered Black Hole’s sunny new assassin.

This week on The Flash, Wally West resurfaced to tell fellow speedster Barry a thing or two, while Mirror-Iris struggled to cover her tracks and Nash asked Cisco to help bust a “ghost.”
After making the grandest of entrances — saving the passengers of a sabotaged helicopter by “multiplying” himself, whisking them to safety, and then disassembling the aircraft mid-air — Wally West reunited with Team Flash. During the resulting “Welcome home” party, Mirror-Iris spilled a lotta wine (always a crime!) because Eva’s own hand had gotten shaky inside the mirror realm, after she overtaxed her powers.

Oscar voters have proven time and again that they love actors who portray historic people. Maybe it’s because they can make easy comparisons. Or maybe it’s because they are often heroic figures. Whatever the reason, it’s been happening since the introduction of supporting categories in the earliest days of the awards ceremony. Tour our photo gallery above of every single man who has won the Best Supporting Actor category at the Academy Awards for playing a true life character.
The very first person to win the illustrious prize for slipping into a real person’s shoes was Joseph Schildkraut, who portrayed the wrongfully imprisoned Captain Alfred Dreyfus in “The Life of Emile Zola” (1937). Since then, actors as diverse as Mark Rylance (“Bridge of Spies” in 2015), Christian Bale (“The Fighter” in 2010), Jim Broadbent (“Iris” in 2001), Martin Landau (“Ed Wood” in 1994) and Mahershala Ali (“Green Book”), have all triumphed...

After their wins at last Sunday’s Screen Actors Guild Awards, Joaquin Phoenix (“Joker”), Renee Zellweger (“Judy”), Brad Pitt (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”) and Laura Dern (“Marriage Story”) continue to stroll toward Oscar glory. The SAG Awards has one of the best track records with the academy: SAG has only missed five times in Best Actor, seven times in Best Actress, nine times in Best Supporting Actor and eight times in Best Supporting Actress. Not too shabby. But despite so much overlap in the categories individually, SAG and Oscar do not link up 4/4 as often as you might assume.
In its 25-year history, SAG has only had a direct match in all four Oscar acting races seven times, most recently two years ago when the foursome of Gary Oldman (“Darkest Hour”), Frances McDormand, Sam Rockwell, Allison Janney became the first set of acting winners to sweep the four...

A rich banker’s wife goes missing in pluvial Paris at the start of Iris, a sinuous and sensual thriller from French actor-director Jalil Lespert. Like Paul Verhoeven’s French-language Isabelle Huppert starrer Elle, Iris was supposed to be filmed in English but the combination of sex and ambiguity finally proved too risky or complex for the U.S. market and the project was made in the world’s most famous sanctuary of the sexy art film — that would be France, natch — instead.
