A federal judge has paused a civil lawsuit brought by Dish Network against rival pay TV provider Vidgo over alleged infringements of streaming video patents.

The proceeding was paused after both companies filed a joint motion requesting the judge suspend further proceedings because of Vidgo’s “economic hardships.”

In court records reviewed by The Desk, an attorney for Dish said Vidgo ran out of cash and suspended operations last September. Dish’s lawsuit was filed around the same time.

The lawsuit claims Vidgo used certain adaptive bitrate technology that is patented by Dish, without first seeking permission or a license to use it. The function improves or reduces the quality of a video stream based on a number of factors, including a viewer’s Internet connection and speed.

Emmy nominee Jessica Biel (The Sinner) is confirmed to star in and executive produce The Good Daughter, a limited series set up at Peacock. The drama is based on Karin Slaughter’s bestseller, with Slaughter attached to write and executive produce.

“The Good Daughter is a suspenseful crime drama where sisters Charlotte (Biel) and Samantha Quinn have spent the last twenty-eight years trying to piece together the lives that were fractured by a single night of violence,” reads Peacock’s synopsis. “When another attack splinters the small town of Pikeville, Charlotte is the first witness on the scene. ‘The Repair Shop’ Outfit Ricochet Signs Damon Pattison

The Repair Shop outfit Ricochet has signed up British indie vet Damon Pattison as its Creative Director. Reporting to MD Joanna Ball, Pattison will be responsible for developing, pitching and securing new commissions across all genres for the Warner Bros. Discovery-backed outfit. Pattison, who replaces Katy Thorogood, most recently ran Banijay-backed Beyond’s UK production arm but it was shuttered last year. He previously worked for BBC Studios and Keo Films, and set up Lucky Day Productions in 2007, which was sold to Zodiak Media Group. Castle Rock Entertainment, Rob Reiner’s company that recently re-launched its film division after going somewhat dormant, is back and with a big new project to shop around the Cannes Film Festival: “Spinal Tap 2,” a sequel to 1984’s immortal comedy classic “This Is Spinal Tap.” And what’s more – everybody is back, including Reiner (as director and in the film as Marty Dibergi), Harry Shearer, Michael McKean and Christopher Guest, Castle Rock announced in a statement.

“When it was announced that Spinal Tap would reunite for one final concert, Marty DeBergi saw this as a chance to make things right with the band who viewed ‘This Is Spinal Tap’ as a hatchet job. So he left his position as visiting adjunct teacher’s assistant at the Ed Wood School of Cinematic Arts in pursuit of film history,” said Reiner in a statement.

Castle Rock Entertainment, the stalwart content label founded in 1987 by partners including Rob Reiner and Alan Horn, is reviving its film production unit with a $175 million cash infusion.

Reiner remains CEO of the outfit, with co-presidents Michele Reiner and Matthew George. The new fund will develop, produce and finance feature films, and is backed by blue chip investors and banks. David Oliver of Cit Bank, who structured the deal with Daisy Stall of California Bank & Trust, is running point.

Exclusive: Rob Reiner, Mira Sorvino and Michelle Krusiec are set for guest-starring roles in Ryan Murphy’s upcoming Netflix limited drama series Hollywood. They join previously announced leads Jeremy Pope, Darren Criss and David Corenswet.

Few details are known about the series, which Murphy calls “a love letter to the Golden Age of Tinseltown.” It is believed to be set in the 1940s and center on three lead characters — played by Pope, Criss and Corenswet.

Reiner will play Ace Amberg, Sorvino will portray Jeanne Crandall and Krusiec will play Anna May Wong, Hollywood’s first Chinese/American movie star. No other character details are being revealed.

The Men In Black actor, who won an best supporting Oscar for his role in The Fugitive, will play eccentric conspiracy theorist Jimmy Cleats in the feature, which was written by Tim Doiron.

Wander follows Arthur Bretnik (Eckhart), a mentally unstable private investigator, who, after being hired to probe a suspicious death in the town of Wander, becomes convinced the case is linked to the same ‘conspiracy cover up’ that caused the death of his daughter. Graham is set to play Shelley Luscomb, an attorney and close friend of Arthur. Shelley has known Arthur long before his world unraveled and acts a voice of reason in his life. Jones’ Cleats is confidant to Eckhart’s Bretnik. Winnick plays Elsa Viceroy, a mysterious authority figure who catches Bretnik’s attention as the investigation deepens.

Exclusive: A Private War producers Matthew George and Joe Gelchion and Law Abiding Citizen producer Robert Katz are joining the production team for Katie Holmes and Josh Lucas pic The Secret.

Gelchion’s Tri-g, George’s Savvy Media Holdings and Katz’s Shine Box will fully finance the previously announced film, which will begin shoot in New Orleans next month. Neil Sacker negotiated the deal and served as outside counsel through Skadden Arps. Covert Media handles international sales.

The love story drama, directed by Andy Tennant (Hitch) is based on the popular self-help book and film of the same name by Rhonda Byrne. Written by Bekah Brunstetter (This Is Us), producers also include Robert Cort (Robert Cort Productions), Byrne and Paul Hanson (Covert). Christopher H. Warner (Wind River) will serve as executive producer.

Blumhouse is going all in on its winning barebones production formula with the cheap-looking Thriller, which makes it extra scary by default. Its loose production values add a certain aura to this haunting tale that you would never get with a big budget horror project. Oh, and we should mention, since it's returning to theaters today, this has nothing to do with Michael Jackson's Thriller, which is playing in 3D alongside The House With a Clock in Its Walls.

Thriller is the latest low budget creeper from Blumhouse, who are gearing up to release the much more high profile Halloween sequel in theaters next month. Dallas Jackson directs Thriller, which tells of a childhood prank gone horribly wrong. You get to see that prank happen here, and the outcome will definitely turn your stomach. The dollar store production aesthetic adds a sense of realism that comes across like a snuff film.

Vertical Entertainment has set an Aug. 14 digital and VOD release for the pandemic thriller “Patient Zero,” starring Matt Smith, Natalie Dormer and Stanley Tucci.

The film, which was developed and produced at Sony’s Screen Gems, is also arriving in select theaters on Sept. 14.

The story takes place after a super-virus has turned humankind into highly intelligent, streamlined killers. Smith portrays an asymptomatic victim who can communicate with the infected and must lead the last survivors on a hunt for Patient Zero and a cure. Agyness Deyn and Clive Standen (“Vikings”) also star.

Directed by Stefan Ruzowitzky from a screenplay by Mike Le, “Patient Zero” was produced by Vincent Newman and executive produced by Glenn S. Gainor and Steve Norris. The film was shot in 2015 in London.

For about 35 years now, Rob Reiner has been a director. For the first decade and a half, he was among the best in the business. Recently? Not so much. That being said, we’re focusing on the good today. Since he’s releasing a new film in the next few days, it feels apt to look at his best work. So, that’s what I’m doing. Welcome to July! Now that we’ve full on entered the second half of the year, the films will again start to take two very distinct shapes. On one end of the spectrum will be the summer blockbusters, which have already been going on in earnest, while on the other side will be the smaller movies that are potentially looking to pick up some awards buzz. In fact, July usually is a perfect example of that. We have a Marvel movie hitting screens and some action flicks, along with at least one title that wants to try and contend for Oscars. The films overall are pretty solid, which I can vouch for, having seen a fair amount of them. Read on for some recommendations… Here now are what I think are the ten best bets for July: 10. James Marsden and “American Housewife” actress Julia Butters will join the cast of Quentin Tarantino’s film “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” sources tell Variety.

Insiders would not reveal what roles Marsden and Butters will be playing.

Damian Lewis, meanwhile, will portray acting icon Steve McQueen, Luke Perry is Scotty Lancer, Emile Hirsch is hairstylist Jay Sebring, Dakota Fanning is Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme — a member of the Manson family — Clifton Collins is Ernesto the Mexican Vaquero, Keith Jefferson is Land Pirate Keith, and Nicholas Hammond is director Sam Wanamaker.

The movie, which Tarantino is writing, directing, and producing, also stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Burt Reynolds, and Timothy Olyphant. Al Pacino just joined the cast as DiCaprio’s character’s agent.
