Filmmakers, like humans, mellow with age; at least, that’s the refrain we usually hear. But this adage is arguably true in the case of filmmaker Julie Delpy, now 54. Her social and dark commentaries always had some terrific bite to them; her Woody Allen-esque romantic comedies “2 Days in Paris” and “2 Days In New York,” in particular, replete with hilarious observations on the peculiarities of neurotic people, but from a feminine perspective. She’s directed many features since, including the mild midlife crisis/pandemic-set Netflix series “On The Verge.” Still, her latest feature, the idealistic, lefty, feel-good immigration comedy “Meet The Barbarians,” is also fairly slight, without much of the amusing prickle of her earlier works.

French-American actor and director Julie Delpy has tackled culture clash in comedies before in ”Two Days in Paris” and “Two Days in New York,” but it’s never been as poignant as in “Meet the Barbarians,” where she explores the journey of a Syrian family who find refuge in a village in Northern France.

The movie, which marks Delpy’s feature comeback after helming the Netflix series “On the Verge,” is set in Paimpont, a small town in France’s Brittany region that is preparing to welcome Ukrainian refugees. But instead of Ukrainians, Syrian refugees settle in town, causing some tension among locals and testing their liberal beliefs.

Charades is at Venice selling the film, which will screen at the Toronto Film Festival, and also has “Vermiglio” and “Their Children After Them” on its sales slate.

The long-awaited sequel to the 2022 horror film M3GAN, M3GAN 2.0, has officially begun shooting. The screenwriting/directing duo formed by Akela Cooper and Gerard Johnstone will be back for the sequel, having worked on the 2022 film produced by Jason Blum through Blumhouse Productions. However, it is not all good news for fans of the franchise, as they will have just a little longer to wait than originally expected for the sequel to arrive.

Blum himself confirmed that things are now moving forward on the sequel, with filming underway in New Zealand on the return of the latest in a long line of iconic dolls-gone-bad.

Leading French producer Michael Gentile’s Paris-based outfit The Film is about to start shooting Julie Delpy’s next directorial outing, “The Barbarians,” and Laurence Arné’s “Les Hennedricks” starring Dany Boon.

Delpy’s comeback to French filmmaking since “Lolo,” “The Barbarians” is a satirical comedy unfolding in a small town in Brittany which is preparing to welcome Ukrainian refugees after voting unanimously to greet them in exchange for subsidies from the government. But instead of seeing Ukrainians come into town, they see Syrian refugees, causing some tensions among locals and testing their liberal beliefs. Delpy will star in the film opposite Sandrine Kiberlain (“Mademoiselle Chambon”), Laurent Lafitte (“Elle”) and Ziad Bakri (“The Weekend Away”), India Hair (“Angry Annie”), Mathieu Demy (“The Bureau”) and Delpy’s father Albert Delpy.

Netflix executive Peter Friedlander opens up about all the controversial cancelations in 2022. The past year has been one of turmoil for Netflix, which was once the undisputed king of streaming. With the pandemic increasing demand for content, Netflix has seen a lot more competition from Disney+, Prime Video, Hulu, and HBO Max. This has resulted in Netflix losing subscribers in Q1 of 2022 for the first time in the company's history, which caused their stock to drop and forced them to rethink their strategy, which includes axing any original content that isn't seeing large viewing numbers. “The Boys” is beefing up its squad with the addition of cast members Rosemarie DeWitt, Rob Benedict and Elliot Knight in Season 4. The Prime Video superhero spoof series will also see the return of Simon Pegg, who portrayed Hughie’s father in earlier seasons and who will be joined by DeWitt, taking on the role of the Jack Quaid character’s mom.

No character details were revealed for Benedict and Knight. The 2022 International Emmy Awards are underway.

23 countries are represented across 15 categories and 60 nominees at the 50th International Emmys, which was hosted by Penn & Teller’s Penn Jillette. The gala took place Monday at the New York Hilton Midtown Hotel.

During the show, South Korean actor Song Joong-ki will present the International Emmy Directorate Award to Miky Lee, vice chairwoman of Cj Group, while Ava DuVernay will receive the International Emmy Founders Award from Blair Underwood.

Before the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences hands out the winged statuettes for the 2022 International Emmy Awards, they should preface the event by saying: Mission accomplished.

When the Academy held the inaugural International Emmys in 1973, the interest in, and market for, non-u.S. television was close to zero. This was the pre-cable, three-network world, and foreign programming, or diversity of any sort, was hard to find on the primetime schedules.

A half-century later, international shows are all over the proverbial dial. Thanks to the number of streaming services now offering foreign programming, American audiences can watch just about every one of this year’s nominees. Figures from Whip Media, a U.S. company that runs a platform for worldwide content licensing, show that the share of non-u.S. titles viewed in the country has more than doubled, from slightly less than 8 percent...

Exclusive: Two-time Oscar nominee Julie Delpy has signed with Verve.

As an actress, Delpy broke out in the 1990 Oscar nominated title Europa Europa which received a nod in the Best Adapted Screenplay category.

The Paris-born multihyphenate made her debut as a filmmaker with the 1995 short film Blah Blah Blah which she also wrote and saw its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.

Since then, she has gone on to write, direct and star in a number of feature films including the indie success Two Days in Paris followed by Two Days in New York, Skylab, Lolo, The Countess and My Zoe.

She starred in Richard Linklater’s Before romance series opposite Ethan Hawke, kicking off with 1995’s Before Sunrise, then 2004’s Before Sunset and then 2013’s Before Midnight. She co-wrote Before Sunset with Linklater and Hawke, for which she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. She also...

Marrakech — Having written the script over the last five years, Julie will act in and direct feature film “The Barbarians,” she confirmed at the Marrakech Film Festival.

“‘It is about Syrian refugees in France. It has a unique flavor. It is funny and dark. A lot of people have tackled this subject but I think my take is unique,” she said.

The producer is Paris-based Michael Gentile (“Rosalie Blum”) who also produced Delpy’s recent Netflix/Canal+ show, “On The Verge.”

“It is an assembly of characters,” she adds. “I have just finished writing. I am writing, directing, and acting.”

It’s not unusual for some films to take decades to make in Hollywood. A second project that she hopes to finally do now is “A Dazzling Display of Splendor,” a project she’s been working on for a decade.

The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has announced its nominees for the 2022 International Emmy Awards, which will be presented Nov. 21 in New York City.

In the drama series competition, there are nominations for Netflix and Gaumont Television’s French mystery thriller Lupin and the American-Mexican crime series Narcos: Mexico, as they contend against nominees Reyka, a crime drama from M-Net and Fremantle, and World Productions’ Vigil series from the U.K.

And the comedy category will see Netflix and Eleven Film’s Sex Education out of the U.K., and HBO Latin America’s Bunker from Mexico contend against UK-based Big Deal Films’ Dreaming Whilst Black and the Canal+ original On The Verge series.

The “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” series at Disney+ is rounding out its cast with five new additions, Variety has learned exclusively.

Virginia Kull, Glynn Turman, Jason Mantzoukas, Megan Mullally, and Timm Sharp are all set to appear in recurring guest star roles in the small screen adaptation of the popular Rick Riordan book series. They join previously announced series lead Walker Scobell as well as recently announced co-stars Aryan Simhadri and Leah Sava Jeffries. News of the casting comes as the series kicks off production in Vancouver.

Bleecker Street has acquired the U.S. rights to Alice Troughton’s “The Tutor,” an upcoming drama and thriller that has Julie Delpy, Richard E. Grant and Daryl McCormack attached to star.

Troughton (“Baghdad Central”) will make her feature directorial debut on “The Tutor,” and the film plans to start shooting in Hamburg, Germany, on June 13, with Bleecker Street planning a 2023 theatrical release for the film.

“The Tutor” follows an aspiring young author, hungry for recognition and success, who takes a tutoring position at a legendary writer’s estate. Soon the young tutor realizes he is engulfed in his hero’s complicated family legacy which holds a deadly past and threatens his own future. The film is a high-class thriller, examining class, ambition and the lengths people will go to achieve – and cling to – social status.

Bleecker Street has acquired US rights to Alice Troughton’s feature directorial debut The Tutor to star Richard E. Grant, Julie Delpy and Daryl McCormack which Film Constellation represents for worldwide sales.

The company plans a 2023 theatrical release on the thriller about an ambitious young author who takes a tutoring position at a legendary writer’s estate and soon becomes engulfed in his hero’s complicated family legacy which holds a deadly past and threatens his own future.

On the Verge is not returning to Netflix or Canal+ for a second season. Starring Julie Delphy, Elisabeth Shue, Sarah Jones, and Alexia Landeau, On the Verge follows four Los Angeles friends in their late 40s as they try to recapture their zest for life, from a time before families, work, and other commitments took over. The first season of 12 episodes was released on Netflix on September 7th of last year.

In addition to being one of the show's stars, Delphy also created, wrote, and directed the series. When asked about the future of the comedy on Instagram, Delphy revealed the show had been cancelled, per Deadline. She also responded to young co-star Kai To's comment.

The comedy series On the Verge has been canceled by Netflix and Canal+ after one season, according to its creator and star, Julie Delpy.

Delpy broke the news today in the comments section of one of her recent Instagram posts. When a fan asked for an update on Season 2, Delpy said that the show has been “cancelled,” though its distributors “forgot to announce it was cancelled.”

On the Verge followed four female friends in their late 40s—played by Delpy, Elisabeth Shue, Sarah Jones and Alexia Landeau—who chose to use midlife not as a time of mourning their youth, but as an opportunity for personal reinvention, with the hope of finally living lives that embodied their beliefs and values.

The L.A.-set half-hour series was a co-production between Canal+ and Netflix, with the former releasing it in France, and Netflix distributing it in the rest of the world.

The Netflix dramedy On the Verge has been cancelled after just one season, according to star and creator Julie Delpy.

The news was quietly confirmed by Delpy — who also served as executive producer, writer and director — in an Instagram response to a follower seeking an update.

For Variety‘s Writers on Writers, Julie Delpy pens a tribute to “The Hand of God” (screenplay by Paolo Sorrentino).

What is truly brilliant about “The Hand of God” is that it is more than the linear memory of events that made Sorrentino the storyteller he is. The film includes stories he grew up with — all those myths and truths that create our personal history. By not exposing us to only “real” events, Sorrentino brings us deeper into his subconscious. As Fabietto says at one point, he doesn’t like reality; and the film respects what young Sorrentino felt then.

The film doesn’t give you all the keys, but like any work of art, gets to you on a subtler, deeper level. The film is pure, fragmented and honest. It employs no melodramatic tricks, yet what unfolds in front of our eyes is a tragedy — the tragedy that made Sorrentino a filmmaker.

Emmanuel Mouret’s “Love Affair(s),” Samir Guesmi’s “Ibrahim” and Elie Wajeman’s “Night Doctor” won top prizes at Colcoa, the French film and TV festival.

The festival, which marked its 25th edition, wrapped at the DGA on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles on Nov. 7. It was attended by 14,000 people.

The festival, programmed by Francois Truffart, is organized by the Franco-American Cultural Fund, a collaboration between the Directors Guild of America (DGA), the Motion Picture Association (MPA), The Writers Guild of America West (Wgaw) and France’s Society of Authors, Composers and Publishers of Music (Sacem).

Colcoa shifted its spring dates to the fall in 2019 as the DGA was being renovated and is now ideally positioned at the start of the awards season in the U.S. The awards ceremony took place at the Sacem headquarters near Paris in the presence of many honorees, notably Guesmi and “Love Affair(s)” producer Frédéric Niedermayer,...

Colcoa, the L.A.-based French film and series festival, has unveiled the television section of its upcoming 25th anniversary edition.

“In Treatment,” Eric Toledano and Olivier Nakache’s French adaptation of the original Israeli series “BeTipul”; Julie Delpy’s series debut “On The Verge”; and “Germinal,” the 19th century-set ambitious period series adapted from Emile Zola’s masterpiece created by Julien Lilti (“Hippocrate”) are among the nine TV titles set to have their North American premiere at Colcoa.

The other series set to compete at Colcoa include “High Intellectual Potential” starring Audrey Fleurot (“Spiral”) as an intractable cleaning lady-turned-ace detective and “Nona and her Daughters,” co-written and directed by Valerie Donzelli (“Declaration of War”).
