In its move to be more transparent with its subscribers, Netflix has released the third edition of its engagement report called What We Watched. While some titles became the hits everyone expected, some movies and television shows beat expectations.
Fool Me Once is the biggest surprise hit, as the limited series was the biggest title on the platform, Netflix's What We Watched report reveals. The thriller series is based on popular thriller author Harlan Coben's novel of the same name from 2016, and it follows the death of Maya's husband. However, Maya is shocked when she sees footage of her husband, Joe, who is presumed dead on her nanny cam, returning to their house as an intruder. Not only that, but it looks like Joe might be connected to the death of her sister, Claire.

Exclusive: Harlan Coben and Nicola Shindler have flagged a “shared vision” and “hybrid British-American sensibilities” as leading to the success of Fool Me Once, Netflix’s most-watched show in the first half of this year.
The showrunner-producer pair chatted to Deadline in advance of the latest data dump, which saw their fourth Netflix UK Coben adaptation top the charts with more than 100 million views in the first half of this year. And it’s been a good day for the Brits, with Bridgerton, Baby Reindeer and The Gentlemen backing up Fool Me Once in the top four and One Day also making the top 10. Ted Sarandos was in London earlier this week trumpeting the Brits’ success.
With the show having launched nearly a year ago, Coben cited a “shared vision” between himself, Shindler, writer Danny Brocklehurst, producer Richard Fee and Netflix as contributing to its runaway success.

“The Grand Tour” producer Andy Wilman says the seeds for his success were sown at school — which he attended with Jeremy Clarkson.
“I went to school with him which is like, argh,” Wilman revealed. “But we didn’t plan any of this when we were at school, obviously not. We do have a synergy. Some of it did come from school… we never sat down and planned a hit because I don’t think we were clever enough to do that. ‘Top Gear’ became that big but it was by accident.”
Wilman co-created Jeremy Clarkson motoring show “Top Gear” before jumping ship with Clarkson when he was fired by the BBC, moving to Prime Video where they launched a new motoring show called “The Grand Tour.” Wilman also produces “Clarkson’s Farm” among other series.

If you’ve attended a mainstream country concert in the past decade, you’re probably familiar with the part of the set where the headliner sprinkles in a non-obvious cover from an adjacent genre like pop, R&b, or classic rock. It’s a move with any number of purposes: to show an artist’s range of influences, to reel in a drifting crowd with a massive hit, to appeal to a wider audience, or to highlight how fluid and arbitrary genre borders really are when you strip a song back to its essentials.

Editor's note: Some of the entries on this list may contain spoilers. If you’re a fan of the mystery-thriller genre, odds are you’ve heard of Harlan Coben. The American writer has penned over 33 novels and counting, but it doesn't stop there for the New York Times bestselling author. Since 2016, he has had seven stories turned into Netflix shows and has signed a deal to flip a total of 14 of his books into series for the streamer — with the latest, Fool Me Once, making it to the streaming service's Top 10 upon its release. Now, with the success of Fool Me Once, Coben made more deals with Amazon and Netflix for more movies. For Prime Video, he is working on a series titled Lazarus with screenwriter Danny Brockelhurst starring Sam Claflin, Bill Nighy, and Alexandra Roach. For Netflix, Coben is planning to bring Missing You and Run Away to the streaming screens as limited series.

Netflix's Fool Me Once has surpassed 3 billion minutes viewed on the Nielsen streaming chart. This makes it the first original streaming title to do so since the March 2023 release of Netflix's The Night Agent. The success of the show could lead to a potential continuation, but it seems unlikely due to the next two Coben adaptations already in development.
Fool Me Once has passed a major viewership milestone for Netflix. The British show is an eight-part limited series adapting the Harlan Coben novel of the same name, which follows a pair of intertwined murder cases in which at least one of the victims may not be as dead as they seemed. The show, which was adapted by Danny Brocklehurst, features an ensemble cast that includes Michelle Keegan, Dino Fetscher, Richard Armitage, Joanna Lumley, Adeel Akhtar, Emmett J. After the huge success of Fool Me Once, Netflix have commissioned two more Harlan Coben adaptations, here are the details.
The Harlan Coben thriller is quickly becoming its own subgenre. So far, ten of his high-octane, twisty novels have made their way to the screen. Amongst the highlights, Tell No One was adapted into a terrific French film of the same name in 2006, directed by Guillaume Canet and starring Francois Cluzet and Kristen Scott Thomas.
On television, The Five, Safe, Innocent, Just One Look, No Second Chance, The Stranger, The Woods, Gone For Good, Stay Close, Hold Me Tight and – most recently – Fool Me Once have all been adapted variously for Channel 5 and Netflix.
It’s thanks to the huge success of Fool Me Once, which landed on Netflix over Christmas and stars Michelle Keegan, that the streaming service are pressing ahead with two more Coben adaptations, Deadline has revealed.

Diddy may be well-known as an accomplished music executive, a gifted producer, and a billionaire mogul. However, the "Gotta Move On" artist seemingly made a bad business decision back in the '90s after he sampled a song from Sting without his permission.
In his 1997 hit "I'll Be Missing You" with Faith Evans - a tribute to the late The Notorious B.I.G. - Diddy famously sampled a track titled "Every Breath You Take," which was written by Sting and released by his band, The Police, in 1983. For years, it's been believed that Diddy is still paying for the unauthorized sample, especially after a 2018 interview with Sting on The Breakfast Club recently resurfaced.

Diddy actually isn’t really keeping Sting’s bills paid. After the rapper said he paid the former Police frontman $5,000 in royalties per day for the sample of “Every Breath You Take” on 1997’s “I’ll Be Missing You,” Diddy turned around and insisted it was all just a joke.
“I want y’all to understand I was joking!” Diddy wrote on Twitter Friday, April 7. “It’s called being Facetious! Me and @OfficialSting have been friends for a long time! He never charged me $3K or $5K a day for Missing You.

Starting from his first acting gig, as a car salesman in the feature “Our Town”, which he also scripted, Mo Hong-jin has shown time and time again his affinity for the thriller genre. Even though it has been one of the most popular genre in his home country, it would take him nine years until the first day of shooting began for “Missing You”. Besides offering the kind of entertainment that goes along with this kind of movie, as a writer he was interested in what turns a person into a “monster”, as Mo explains in interviews about his feature. Especially with regards to the character of Hee-jo, played by actress Shim Eun-kyung, he wanted to know whether she decided to go the same path as the killer she had been following or if she would remain human and a “girl”.
