Backstage Battles & Atlanta Glamour: Why 'Daytime Divas' Delivers the Drama (Rating: 3.5/5 Stars)

Filmed in Atlanta, Georgia, a city increasingly known for its vibrant television production scene, 'Daytime Divas' plunges viewers into the chaotic backstage of 'The Lunch Hour,' a fictional daytime talk show. While the sunny on-air personas of hosts Maxine, Mo, Kibby, Nina, and Heather suggest effortless camaraderie, the reality is a battleground of clashing ambitions. Take, for instance, the episode where a leaked memo, revealing Maxine's plans to renegotiate contracts, ignites a full-blown war between her and Mo, each vying for control of the show's direction. Or when Kibby, desperate for more airtime, sabotages Nina's segment, sparking a public confrontation. These moments, filled with raw emotion and calculated manipulation, are the show's bread and butter.

Maxine Shaw, the show's creator, is a particularly compelling figure. Her "diva" persona isn't just a caricature; it masks a past where she had to fight tooth and nail to build her career, often at the expense of personal relationships. This is shown when Anna the former assistant turned journalist reveals events from Maxine's past, that show how she climbed to the top. This complexity elevates her beyond a simple stereotype.

While 'Daytime Divas' certainly delivers the 'guilty pleasure' drama many viewers crave, it's not without its flaws. Critics rightly pointed out the show's tendency to rely on familiar tropes, and the show at times sacrifices nuanced storytelling for heightened drama. However, the show does give a realistic depiction of the power struggle that can happen in the workplace, and the ways that some people will go to, to obtain power.

The Atlanta setting, with its burgeoning media industry, provides a fitting backdrop for the show's heightened reality. The atmosphere, while not explicitly highlighted, contributes to the show's overall sense of vibrant, high-stakes drama.

In short, 'Daytime Divas' delivers a potent dose of backstage drama and larger-than-life personalities. If you crave compelling conflict and don't mind a bit of over-the-top spectacle, this show is a must-watch.

I just finished Watching Every Episode

"Daytime Divas" is a show in search of an identity. The creators behind this show have made a mess of what "Could of been a great show".

As we all know this program is based on "Star Jones" book "Satan's Sisters". Now Star Jones was a "View" host for 9 years and had a notorious final year on that show. So I expected to be a behind the scenes drama of a daytime talk show. What this show ended up being was a "Desperate Housewives" wannabe. The results by the time the final episode ended were a show where everyone was over the top and nothing grounded the story. Here is the official breakdown of the show

The gossip-driven, "The Lunch Hour." It's a long-running, hit talk show for women, filled with conversations about life, love, politics and, of course, juicy gossip. But off-camera, a sinister side of the industry emerges -- a backstage world where power struggles, diva fits and steamy affairs are the norm. As the drama of "The Lunch Hour" makes news, everyone is talking about it, including the cast members of the actual hit talk show "The View," who guest star as themselves.

Now if the show had ONE likable cast member it would have something to anchor too. What we get is actress's going way over the top in every scene and just doesn't work.

The worse offender in this happens to be Fiona Gubelmann who plays a conservative woman. She plays this so broad that you hate her and not in a good way! This character is clearly modeled after Elisabeth Hasselbeck. Fiona Gubelmann however plays the part as Kristen Wiig imitating Elisabeth Hasselbeck.

If this show has a 2nd season it should just focus about the drama behind a daytime talk show and the backstabbing that happens on a show. "Daytime Divas" the first season went in too many directions Maybe next time they will have a map?!

    Nobody to Care About

Everyone here is over the top. What should be campy fun is just a messy show about screaming women fighting to get there own way!

Based on Star Jones book which is based on her 9 years on "The View" this show needs major work if its to survive for more than one season.

Now everybody on this show is hustling for something. Everybody wants "Bigger and Better Things". What the show should have done is start off with a new panelist on this show and we see the show through her eyes.

This show has major possibilities! However until the show runner pulls their head out of their butts that won't know that their "Stuff" stinks!

    Refreshing, Comical and Suspenseful!

I absolutely love this show I was a little worried being that it was on VH1 and sometimes the casting is hit or miss but honestly the casting and production is as close to perfection as you can get. I was a bit weary on the first episode because it was so fast paced it was a little difficult to keep up but I had to remember that this is a representation of Daytime TV and which is fast paced and then it became more intriguing because it put me in this kind of scripted reality TV mindset and I wasn't so overwhelmed after that. Episode 2 made it even better we're getting background info to keep up with the present yet there's still a lot of mystery behind Maxine played by Vanessa Williams who is phenomenal so happy to see that flawless woman back on my screen and it touches on the other characters as well. It's also extremely funny and it touches on important and personal issues that we face everyday with our family, friends and coworkers and is relatable regardless of your background I hope it continues to do well and gets picked up for another season. Not only is the writing grand but the actresses all hold their own and bring something unique to the table while it's clear that Vanessa Williams is the star of the show the burden of carrying the show doesn't fall solely on her shoulders all of these ladies do a great job of moving the show along and I am just as interested in the story lines of their characters as I am Vanessa's. Well done VH1, I'm thoroughly surprised that not only did you recognize a gem but that you also properly executed take notes TNTClaws this is everything that you tried to be but failed miserably! Congratulations Vanessa Williams, Tichina Arnold, Chloe Bridges, Camille Guaty and Fiona Gubelmann on the success of the show you're truly talented actresses and a true representation of a diverse cast, this show is comical yet suspenseful I can't wait to see more!

    Decent Watch

I actually really enjoy this show, it reminds me of Desperate Housewives and Devious Maids. Vanessa Williams kind of plays the same character she played on Ugly Betty and even Desperate Housewives, the rich powerful diva. But it doesn't matter because she plays that kind of character so well, it's hilarious. However she is really the only funny person in it. The other characters even though they are good actresses, don't really cut it for me. This show has the potential to be a lot funnier than it actually is, and it's a shame. The only other person I enjoy watching is Kristen Johnston. However I still like it, will continue to watch, and if it gets renewed for a season 2, hopefully they'll punch it up a bit.
