Why Carrie Coon’s Emmy chances for ‘The White Lotus’ will be helped by ‘The Gilded Age’
Image
Last year, HBO's The Gilded Age made a major breakthrough at the Emmys by scoring six nominations, including Best Drama Series, for its second season. The third season is currently airing and won't be eligible until next year's Emmys. However, its presence could still be helpful for star Carrie Coon as she contends for her supporting role in another prestige HBO drama, The White Lotus.

This marks Coon's third Emmy nomination, after Fargo in 2017 and The Gilded Age in 2024. On the third season of Mike White's anthology series, Coon plays Laurie Duffy, a recently divorced corporate lawyer from New York City, who, along with her two longtime friends (Leslie Bibb and Michelle Monaghan), reunite on a girls' trip to Thailand.

Based on the early predictions for Best Drama Supporting Actress, the third time will be the charm for Coon. And having a juicy, highly visible role in The Gilded Age will only help.

The Facts Of Life Cast: Where The Actors Are Now
Image
You take the good, you take the bad, and there you have... nine seasons and over 200 episodes of one of the most successful sitcoms of all time. Spun out of NBC's other wildly popular series "Diff'rent Strokes," "The Facts of Life" followed the goings-on at a girl's boarding school in upstate New York. The series became a fast hit, thanks to its chipper tone and uplifting sense of humor, as well as the performances from its cast of talented young actors -- many of whom went on to achieve major success in the film and television industry.

Whether they only stayed in the main cast during its experimental first season, joined as a replacement of sorts in the final installments, or played a part in all of its 200-plus episodes, the actors embarked on a range of professional journeys. Some retired immediately afterward, pursuing careers ranging from music and...

Image
Welcome to the Gold Ticket, your VIP guide to the best of pop culture for the weekend ahead, curated by the Gold Derby team of experts. (May 30-June 1)

The main stream

From a genre perspective, Scott Frank's latest project for Netflix has little in common with his previous two shows for the streaming service, the Emmy-winning limited series The Queen’s Gambit and Godless. But like them, Dept. Q is must-see TV.

Adapted from the best-selling Department Q crime novels by Danish author Jussi Adler-Olsen, the nine-episode series (now streaming) stars Matthew Goode as Dci Carl Morck, an acerbic detective returning to work months after a routine welfare check leaves a young cop dead, his best friend and partner paralyzed from the waist down, and him with a bullet wound to the neck and mandated therapy. When his embattled Edinburgh police station needs a PR win, Morck is assigned to...

Kaitlyn Dever out front in Drama Guest Actress Emmy odds for killer ‘The Last of Us’ role
Image
This year's Emmy race for Best Drama Guest Actress is shaping up to be a battle between The Last of Us and Severance.

Two guest stars from each show appear in Gold Derby's top four spots: Kaitlyn Dever and Catherine O'Hara for HBO's zombie apocalypse adaptation, and Gwendoline Christie and Merritt Wever for Apple TV+'s sci-fi workplace series. Our predicted lineup of six is rounded out by Cherry Jones for The Handmaid's Tale and Hilary Swank for Yellowjackets.

Dever appears in three episodes of The Last of Us Season 2 as Abby, a soldier who seeks revenge against Joel (Pedro Pascal) for murdering her father. When she finally locates him, Abby and her group of followers torture and beat Joel to death with a golf club, in front of his daughter figure, Ellie (Bella Ramsey). The cycle of revenge violence continues, as Ellie takes it upon herself to kill everyone...

Timothy Olyphant’s Forgotten Western Proves How Good Taylor Sheridan’s ‘Yellowstone’ Could’ve Been at HBO
Image
Before things went all crazy with bunkhouses and brutal ranch politics, there was a Western that quietly did what some of the newer hits are still trying to figure out. It starred a future cowboy icon and had all the chaos-fueled stuff you’d want in a show. It’s one of those blink-and-you-miss-it classics that proves the Western genre had legs even before streaming wars.

Frankly speaking, if this had landed on the right network with a certain big-name creator at the helm, it might’ve rewritten TV history before anyone even said “Dutton.”

Timothy Olyphant’s old western Deadwood walked so Yellowstone could run Wild Bill Hickok and Al Swearengen in a still from Deadwood | Credits: HBO

Before Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone turned ranch drama into a billion-dollar Western empire, HBO had already set the gold standard. Enter Deadwood, the foul-mouthed, character-packed Western that made Timothy Olyphant a...

Dept. Q TV Review: A solid crime procedural from the creator of The Queen’s Gambit
Image
Plot: Dci Carl Morck is a brilliant cop but a terrible colleague. His razor-sharp sarcasm has made him no friends in Edinburgh police. After a shooting that leaves a young pc dead, and his partner paralysed, he finds himself exiled to the basement and the sole member of Department Q; a newly formed cold case unit. The department is a PR stunt, there to distract the public from the failures of an under-resourced, failing police force that is glad to see the back of him. But more by accident than design, Carl starts to build a gang of waifs and strays who have everything to prove. So, when the stone-cold trail of a prominent civil servant who disappeared several years ago starts to heat up, Carl is back doing what he does best – rattling cages and refusing to take no for an answer.

‘Dept. Q’ Welcomes You to the Isle of Misfit Cops
Image
Nobody likes Carl Morck — mostly because he makes it clear early and often how little he likes them. Everything and everyone is an opportunity to complain. He’s an English cop stuck working in Scotland because of a marriage that’s long over. He’s much smarter than everyone else in his department, with the possible exception of his partner Hardy — and even thoughts of Hardy make him angry, because the series opens with both of them being shot by an unknown criminal, leaving Carl with a nasty scar on...

‘Dept. Q’ Review: Matthew Goode Excels in Netflix’s Satisfyingly Sturdy Crime Procedural
Image
Back in 2007, before he became TV’s go-to auteur for smart genre programming for grown-ups, Oscar nominated writer Scott Frank made a transition to directing with The Lookout, a twisty slab of neo-noir that features, among other things, my favorite performance from Matthew Goode, in a charmingly vicious turn.

It’s been 18 years, but Frank and Goode have finally reteamed for Netflix’s Dept. Q, a nine-episode adaptation of the first book in Jussi Adler-Olsen’s series of Danish crime novels — though I say “finally” as if there’s a there are zillions of us Lookout-istas clamoring for this reunion.

For the more casually fanatical, it’s probably more of a draw to say that after Godless, The Queen’s Gambit and Monsieur Spade, Dept. Q continues to confirm how good Frank is at well-crafted, complicated dramas that prove that you don’t need to do anything unprecedented to make a good TV show.

‘Dept. Q’ Boss Previews Matthew Goode’s Cold Case Mystery Series With Team of ‘Misfits’
Image
Among his many roles, Matthew Goode has played aristocrats’ husbands, a psychopathic killer, a code breaker, an ageless vampire, and a prosecutor. But he’s never before been a cop — although he did portray a detective’s sibling in a cozy mystery. That changes on Thursday, May 29, when the British actor will star in the new dark, but witty, noirish crime show as bitter and brilliant Dci (Detective Chief Inspector) Carl Morck. The Englishman, who is stuck in Edinburgh, Scotland, a city he doesn’t like because he agreed to care for the son of his Scottish ex-wife, is not a happy man. Scott Frank, who created, wrote, directed, and produced the quality TV series Godless, The Queen’s Gambit, and Monsieur Spade, is behind this new show based on the popular mystery novels written by Danish author Jussi Adler-Olsen. “He gave me the rights to the books, maybe a dozen years ago,...

Dept. Q crime series set to start resolving those unsolvable cold cases
Image
At the turn of this century, a crime series titled Cold Case was quite a rage among viewers. Starring Kathryn Morris, a Philadelphia detective with her problems, who went on solving a cold case after another, the series ran for seven years. Dept. Q, a new Netflix series with a similar concept that will open its cold case files on May 29, 2025, might repeat such a success.

The new series is based on the books by Danish author Jussi Adler-Olsen, and stars Matthew Goode as Edinburgh, Scotland, detective Carl Morck, who has quite a few personal demons to resolve.

During an attack, an officer was left dead, and his partner was paralyzed, and the guilt was pressing on Morck's shoulders. To regain his confidence, Morck is tasked with opening a cold case department - Dept. Q.

Scott Frank wrote and directed the series, insisting that Goode be cast in the main role.

Netflix continues to be a home for thrilling TV, with The Queen's Gambit hitting the streaming service in 2020. Creator Scott Frank has next set his sights on Dept. Dept. Q: Cast, Release Date, Photos, Plot of New Matthew Goode Series
Image
Detective Carl Morck of the new series Dept. Q isn’t particularly easy to get along with. It’s not his fault — well, maybe it’s his fault a little. Morck is a notorious figure in his adopted home of Edinburgh, Scotland, an English detective who gets under the skin of everyone around him. It may not sound like much of a compliment at first, but Dept. Q writer/director Scott Frank knew exactly which actor to call: Matthew Goode.

“I’ve been working with him since 2006,” Frank tells Tudum. “Matthew just felt like this guy. I was writing with him in mind. I knew that he could do this and that he would lend this undeniable intelligence with his flintiness, but that he could also be emotional without being sentimental.”

“This is the second time that he’s given me a role I don’t think anybody else would...

Dept. Q: Matthew Goode is a cantankerous detective in first look images from Scott Frank’s new Netflix series
Image
Between 2007 and 2021, Danish author Jussi Adler-Olsen wrote ten novels in his noir crime series Department Q. Those stories have served as the basis for multiple Danish thriller films over the years, with more to come – and now, Netflix has shared a batch of first look images that give a preview of their upcoming 9-episode series Dept. Q, which stars Matthew Goode and changes the setting from Copenhagen, Denmark to Edinburgh, Scotland. Along with the unveiling of the images comes the announcement that Dept. Q is scheduled to premiere on May 29th.

Written and directed by Scott Frank, who previously created The Queen’s Gambit and Godless for Netflix, Dept. Q has the following synopsis: Dci Carl Morck is a brilliant cop but a terrible colleague. His razor-sharp sarcasm has made him no friends in Edinburgh police. After a shooting that leaves a young pc dead, and his partner paralysed, he finds...

Jurassic Park Star Sam Neill Joins MonsterVerse; Set To Star In Godzilla x Kong 3
Image
Multiple sources are reporting that Sam Neill (Jurassic Park; Thor: Ragnarok; Peaky Blinders) has joined the cast of Legendary's next MonsterVerse installment, the tentatively titled Godzilla x Kong 3.

Plot details are being kept strictly under wraps for now, but the studio has teased that the new film, which is being helmed by Grant Sputore, will follow “several new human characters alongside the beloved and iconic Titans Godzilla and Kong as they face off against a cataclysmic world-ending threat.”

It's up for debate what that cataclysmic world-ending threat could be, but the previous film's director Adam Wingard teased last year that, if he were to direct the next film, Destoroyah might be in the cards. Speaking with Discussing Film, he said,

"I’ll say this, one of my top Godzilla movies is Godzilla vs. Destoroyah. The reason it’s one of my favorite films is I don’t think any other Godzilla movie,...

15 Best Netflix Limited Series, Ranked
Image
In addition to their acclaimed original movies and television shows, Netflix has also produced a growing number of popular limited series spanning virtually every genre. From period piece dramas to tautly paced scary stories, these limited series are perfect for viewers not looking for a multi-season commitment. There is something reassuring about going into a series knowing that a clear beginning, middle, and end have already been laid out. These limited series offer that complete sense of closure, with each episode perfectly paced to move towards that finish.

For the sake of clarification, a limited series here is a show limited to a single season, omitting shows running for a set of two or three planned seasons. Similarly, anthology shows, even if they tell a complete standalone story within a single season like Netflix's hilarious "Beef," are also omitted. The shows included here can be spinoffs or have spiritual successors,...

Steven Soderbergh movies: 11 greatest films ranked worst to best
Image
No one can say that Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh delivers the same movie time after time. In an eclectic three-decade career, he has directed crowd-pleasing all-star vehicles, action comedies, political dramas, micro-mini experimental works, true-life story ("Erin Brockovich") and even a film starring porn actress Sasha Grey ("The Girlfriend Experience").

In addition to his Oscar success, Soderbergh has also found success bringing his singular vision to the small screen, winning an Emmy for directing and editing the TV movie "Behind the Candelabra" (which isn't included on this list of big screen outings). He's also been nominated twice as a director on "The Knick," as a cinematographer on "Behind the Candelabra" and as a producer on "Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired," "His Way" and "Godless."

Take a tour of our photo gallery of Soderbergh's 11 greatest films, and see if your favorite topped the list.

I Can’t Stop Thinking About How Heartbreaking This ‘Severance’ Performance Is
Image
Emmy Award-winning actress Merritt Wever has a consistent talent for bringing a certain kind of esteem to her seemingly grounded roles, and for carrying her characters’ tragedies and yearnings in every minute of her performances. Although she is widely known for her portrayal of the lovably bumbling Zoey Barkow on Nurse Jackie, Wever has earned ample respect for a number of more graceful, forceful roles including those in Hulu’s emotional Tiny Beautiful Things, limited Netflix western Godless, and Apple TV+’s feminist anthologyRoar. She imbues her characters with a great sense of wisdom, patience, and maturity, which adds a layer of maternity to even her most youthful roles but never becomes condescending in the slightest.

A Sons of Anarchy Theory Turns Netflix’s Upcoming Western Into a Secret Samcro Prequel
Image
Kurt Sutter’s latest project, The Abandons, has already got fans buzzing with excitement and speculation. Since the success of Sons of Anarchy, Sutter has built a reputation for creating gritty worlds full of outcasts and violence, and his new Netflix Western appears no different. Set in 1850s Oregon, The Abandons might seem like a shift from his outlaw biker tales. However, there are several hints that the show could be more connected to Sutter’s previous work than initially thought. It could be a hidden prequel to Sons of Anarchy.

The Abandons follows a group of outcast families fighting against corrupt enemies in a lawless landscape. Sound familiar? While not much has been released about the show, that hasn’t stopped fans from speculating that The Abandons will offer a backstory to Samcro's origins and the Teller family at the center of it all. However, with the recent news...

Jeff Daniels To Star In ‘Dilettante’ NY Media Drama In Works At Apple From ‘Julia’ Creator & Berlanti Productions
Image
Exclusive: Apple TV+ has landed for development Dilettante, a series starring Jeff Daniels as a character that will likely get the New York media circles buzzing, Deadline has learned. The project, from Warner Bros. TV and studio-based Berlanti Productions, is inspired by Dana Brown’s memoir about working for former Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter.

Written by Brown and Julia creator Daniel Goldfarb, Dilettante is described as a fictionalized coming-of-age story set in the glamorous and cutthroat “Golden Age” of magazines in 1990s New York.

Daniels will play a fictional magazine editor that is certain to draw parallels to Carter the way another work of fiction about a young assistant to a powerful New York magazine editor, the movie The Devil Wears Prada, has been evoking Anna Wintour as a prototype for its editor character played by Meryl Streep.

Jeff Bridges previously played a magazine editor loosely based on Carter...

Don't Sleep on Netflix's 83% Rt Western Series 'Godless'
Image
Released on Netflix in November 2017, Godless is a Western drama comprised of seven episodes. Created, written, and directed by Scott Frank, the miniseries is set in 1884 and centers its story around a predominately female cast, which is unique given it takes place in the Wild West. That being said, such a component makes its narrative all the more interesting to watch. In a series that manages to stay true to what makes Westerns so compelling in the first place, it also successfully offers something new to the genre. Women were always a part of the Western narrative. Godless simply brings them center stage without making them mere prostitutes or damsels in distress.

Upon its debut, Godless was met with widely positive reviews from critics as well as audiences. With a Tomatometer score of 83% and a comparable Popcornmeter score of 85% on Rotten Tomatoes, the show is considerably well liked. It was...
