In Hollywood, there’s no greater risk than mounting a vanity project. You know the type – when a director or star achieves superstar level, they can’t resist the temptation to turn their pet project into a film, no matter how poorly conceived or uncommercial it may be. When a star gets that big, chances are they’ll find someone to fund their movie, with notable examples being John Travolta’s Battlefield Earth, Chris Pine’s Poolman, or The Weeknd’s recent flop, Hurry Up Tomorrow.

Somewhat in that vein, but not as egregious, is the way that star Vin Diesel, whenever his stardom hits a peak as opposed to a valley, uses the opportunity to try to make his favourite character, Riddick, a household name. One can see why Diesel might hold the character in high regard, with the original Pitch Black arguably the first true Vin Diesel movie.

June is a big month for Peacock. Fans of dinosaurs and sharks have a lot to look forward to. All six Jurassic Park movies will be streaming in one place for the first time. This comes just in time before Jurassic World Rebirth hits theaters in July.

Irish filmmaker Brendan Canty’s debut feature Christy will open the 24th edition of the Transilvania International Film Festival (TIFF) in Romania’s Cluj-Napoca on June 13.

The coming-of-age-story had its world premiere in the Berlinale’s Generation 14plus section where it won the section’s Grand Prix for best film.

Exclusive: Bridesmaids and Pitch Perfect multihyphenate Rebel Wilson has inked with the United Talent Agency for representation.

The news comes in the wake of Wilson making her feature directorial debut, the musical, The Deb, at TIFF which garnered 80% fresh with critics on Rotten Tomatoes. The Deb, which Wilson also produced and provided additional writing, follows two teenage girls who attend a debutante ball in a small country town.

Other big movies from Wilson include Jojo Rabbit, Hustle, and Isn’t It Romantic. With films that have totaled nearly $3 billion at the global box office, Wilson is arguably Australia’s biggest female comedy export.

Wilson starred in the Netflix comedy Senior Year, which was the streamer’s 9th most watched film of 2022, as well as the most watched film among female-led originals. After kicking off February with Tom Ford’s Nocturnal Animals (listen), Trace and I celebrated Valentine’s Day with Mitchell Lichtenstein’s Teeth (listen). Now we’re ready to dive into our first Amityville film on the pod with a look at Tony Randel‘s Amityville: It’s About Time (1992).

In the film, after returning home from New York with an antique clock, family patriarch Jacob (Stephen Macht) is mauled in a horrific animal attack. His ex-girlfriend Andrea (Shawn Weatherly) is forced to stay in his house and look after him and his two teenage children: “juvenile delinquent” Rusty (Damon Martin) and virginal Lisa (Megan Ward). Sarah Shahi has been a big Dan Fogelman fan ever since This Is Us.

When Fogelman debuted his beloved NBC family drama back in 2016, he received an email from a fan. Shahi wrote the showrunner to say that she would do any role on the series, she’d even warm up coffee. She was later cast on his short-lived Fox baseball drama Pitch, but they never met. She would go on to other roles on Chicago Fire and The Rookie, lead Netflix’s Sex/Life, and star in films Black Adam and Red White & Royal Blue. It wasn’t until her audition for Paradise, Fogelman’s next mystery series, that they would finally meet.

“He took one look at me and he remembered. He said, ‘Sarah Shahi, you wrote me the kindest email and I’ve been wanting to meet you ever since,'” she recalls now to The Hollywood Reporter.

The divisive sci-fi movie that made Vin Diesel an action hero has now found a new streaming home. Released back in 2000, Pitch Black features a star-making turn from Diesel, and launched the now fan-favorite Riddick franchise, introducing Diesel as the mysterious Richard B. Riddick, a former soldier-turned-mercenary-turned-criminal who finds himself crash landing on an alien planet inhabited by monsters who thrive in the dark. Oh, and an eclipse is coming.

Directed by David Twohy and co-written by Twohy and brothers Ken and Jim Wheat, Pitch Black features Radha Mitchell, Cole Hauser, Claudia Black, and Keith David as some of the other crew members who come to rely on Diesel’s untrustworthy antihero to get them off the planet alive. Which he may just be able to do thanks to his “shine jobbed” eyes, which enable him to see in the dark. Pitch Black is now available to stream on Prime Video in the U.

Dan Fogelman is fast becoming known for delivering television shows that feature a compelling twist baked into their pilot episode. The most notable examples would be This is Us, which begins its pilot by focusing on four separate strangers...and then revealing that they're a family, and the Hulu thriller Paradise, which used its high concept pitch of "the President of the United States was killed, and nobody knows who did it" to cover the larger twist that the President — and seemingly the rest of the world — is living in a massive bunker under Colorado. But Fogelman helped create another twist-based television series, Pitch — which was cut down in its prime.

Dan Fogelman gave us one of the worst movies of the past decade with 2018's "Life Itself." At the same time, he's also responsible for some of the best TV shows to premiere since 2015, like the phenomenal fantasy musical "Galavant," the rather underrated "Pitch," and, of course, "This Is Us." 

Those last two series are significant because they debuted within a couple of days of each other and share one very big thing in common: their pilot episodes end with a pretty big plot twist that radically changes what you think the show you're watching is about. This article will not reveal what those twists are, but suffice it to say that Fogelman has a particular style and has continued this trend with his latest TV show, the Hulu political thriller "Paradise."

Hulu's new political thriller, Paradise, is an instant hit, debuting at number one on the streamer's Top 10 chart. The show stars Sterling K. Brown (This Is Us) as a Secret Service Agent tasked with guarding the President, played by James Mardsen (X-Men). It's from This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman, who knows how to produce an excellent drama.

Paradise has a sizzling 82% fresh rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and, so far, it holds a 7.8 / 10 rating on IMDb. MovieWeb's own Greg Archer enjoyed the debut, saying, "Paradise is an exceptional series that checks all the boxes viewers crave — great characters, high-stakes drama, plot twists — and gives Emmy winner Brown yet another chance to shine."

“Paradise” made a surprise early debut across Hulu and Disney+.

The first episode of Dan Fogelman’s new drama series starring Sterling K. Brown began streaming Sunday, Jan. 26 at 6 p.m. Pt across Hulu and Disney+ in the U.S. and on Disney+ internationally.

With the first three episodes initially scheduled to debut on Tuesday, Jan. 28, “Paradise” Episode 2 and 3 will now be available on Hulu beginning Tuesday on Hulu in the U.S. and Disney+ internationally. The show is also set to air its premiere on ABC and FX later this week in an unprecedented cross-platform push.

From there, new episodes of “Paradise,” which also stars James Marsden and Julianne Nicholson, will premiere Tuesdays, leading up to the finale on March 4. The show consists of eight episodes.

Japanese broadcasting powerhouse Nippon TV has elevated longtime exec Hiroyuki Fukuda to the top spot, naming him representative director, president and COO. The former rugby player, who joined the network in 1985, steps into the role as the broadcaster faces stiff competition in ratings despite maintaining its golden-time viewership crown in 2024, though tied with competitors.

Citing the Japanese character for “movement” as his 2025 principle, he plans to shift from traditional broadcasting revenue. The exec, who worked in programming and sales divisions, points to AI tech and the network’s Ad Reach Max platform for content creation and ad sales development.

The move comes as former president Akira Ishizawa transitions to lead the new Yomiuri Chukyo Fs Broadcasting Holdings Corporation. Horror, however, has versatility that is hard to come by. The genre plays with almost any theme it wants, as long as the result is terrifying. Horror is the perfect breeding ground for social commentary and dissection of real-world issues. The genre is also ideal for mixing into other genres as well.

Some of the best horror movies ever made aren't just horror. More often than not, horror melds brilliantly with other genres. Think of some of the most infamous horror films out there. Alien (1979) and The Thing (1982) are two titles every movie enjoyer knows, but they aren't just horror, they're also sci-fi. And Hulu is taking a novel approach by offering fans more than just the action on the field.

Deadline reported today that the streamer is developing a scripted series set in the world of professional football.

The project will be the third Hulu series with Dan Fogelman attached as executive producer.

The untitled show is described by Deadline as “a multi-generational family drama.”

Details are scarce at the moment, but it seems that the “sprawling” storyline will center primarily on the NFL.

Fogelman has reportedly worked out a deal to collaborate with the league.

Hulu has ordered a family drama series from Fogelman that will be set inside the NFL, TVLine has confirmed. Exact plot details for the as-yet-untitled series are being kept under wraps, but it is said to have a generational family component, per a source with knowledge on the project.

Dan Fogelman is adding another Hulu series to his portfolio, this one set in the high-stakes world in the NFL.

Hulu has given a series pickup to the untitled project, which is from 20th Television and Skydance Sports. Details are sparse, though it is said to involve a generational family dynamic, in addition to its setting in the NFL.

Skydance Sports, it is worth noting, is a joint venture between David Ellison’s Skydance and the NFL. The league is notoriously careful about its brand, but told The Hollywood Reporter last year that it wants to develop more scripted fare via the Skydance Jv.

Fogelman is serving as writer and executive producer alongside Jess Rosenthal with David Ellison, Jesse Sisgold, and Jason T. Reed serving as EPs for Skydance Sports.

The new show, which is currently untitled, has received a series order from Hulu, with the “This Is Us” creator serving as a writer and executive producer. Details about the plot are being kept under wraps, though the series will take place within the world of the NFL and will involve a generational family component, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.

Produced by 20th Television and Skydance Sports, the new series will be executive produced by Fogelman and Jess Rosenthal, as well as David Ellison, Jesse Sisgold and Jason T. Reed for Skydance Sports. Fogelman is currently under an overall deal at 20th Television.
