A sad, subtle, resonant drama

A Canadian drama; A story about a woman struggling to cope with the onset of the neurodegenerative disorder Parkinson's, and how her son comes to terms with his own identity and sexuality. The film is about the acting, especially the soft-spoken Shirley Henderson who gave a delicate performance. The characters seem well observed - how they cope with grief, trauma and circumstance. The mutual appreciation for one another is touching - these are good people and it is pleasing the way the drama unfolds.

Shirley shines

Judy (Shirley Henderson) is struggling with Parkinson's disease which leaves her shaking constantly. She and her husband have their sensitive son Jamie (Théodore Pellerin) caring for them. Jamie gets a job in the oil & gas fields and moves away from home. Both mother and son struggle in their own isolation.

This is a tender, quiet film of internal personal drama. Shirley Henderson delivers a powerful performance. Pellerin has a troubled sensitive feel about him and he's very good in his half of the movie. New filmmaker Kathleen Hepburn is steady without anything flashy but it is Shirley who truly shines.
