The game is based on a series of four choose-your-own-adventure audio CD games released around 1995 by TSR. TSR was an American game publishing company best known for publishing Dungeons & Dragons, the classic fantasy tabletop role-playing game by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson. The four released audio CD games are Terror T.R.A.X. - Track of the Vampire, Terror T.R.A.X. - Track of the Werewolf, Terror T.R.A.X. - Track of the Creature and Terror T.R.A.X. - Track of the Mummy. All four games have the same gameplay. A strange 911 call is forwarded to T.R.A.X. agency and one or two agents proceed to investigate. The player can occasionally choose which action the protagonist should take. T.R.A.X. A.I. computer will then inform the player which audio track to play next in order to continue the story. Different choices take the player to different audio tracks and game story paths. The FMV game Terror T.R.A.X.: Track of the Vampire is an adaptation of the first T.R.A.X audio game of the same name. There were plans to adapt the others, but these plans were eventually scrapped. Wizards of the Coast, an American publishing company that primarily distributes games based on fantasy and science fiction themes, and formerly an operator of retail stores for games, bought the failing TSR in 1997 and re-released the first two Terror T.R.A.X. audio adventures with some minor enhancements like adding visual menus for the audio tracks to make things easier for the players who want to play the game on the computer.
