Ever since Dev Patel made his on-screen debut at the age of 17 on the E4 British teen drama "Skins," he's been a consistent presence in film and television. Born in the United Kingdom to Gujarati parents, Patel has consistently redefined what it means to be an Indian actor working in Hollywood, whether it involves championing the types of stories that rarely get told in American and British cinema, or expanding the breadth of roles that casting directors often put them in consideration for. Over the course of his career, he's earned an Academy Award nomination and took home a BAFTA, the highest film honor in his native England.
To be perfectly honest, Patel doesn't really have a lot of stinkers to his name (the dire live-action production of "The Last Airbender" from M. Night Shyamalan notwithstanding). So, when we look at his career highlights, we're looking at good-to-great films, unlike...

Former CIA officer John Kiriakou has given a high accuracy score to Dev Patel's true story movie about the 2008 Mumbai attacks, which came out in 2019. Patel's best movies see him in thrilling roles, portraying captivating characters that are highly unique depending on the story he's contributing to. This includes everything from his theatrical debut in 2008's Slumdog Millionaire, to his first directorial movie as the lead character in 2024's Monkey Man. His performances are often memorable thanks to the way he commands the screen whenever he's front-and-center.
Beyond original stories for the big screen, Patel has also starred in multiple adaptations of existing works. This includes 2019's The Personal History of David Copperfield, where he played the title character, and 2021's The Green Knight, where he was the Arthurian knight Gawain. Action cinema has had one of its best decades thanks to the incredible success of the John Wick franchise as well as quality continuations in the Mission: Impossible franchise and other individual hits. One of those individual hits came out in early 2024 and kind of flew under the radar until gathering a solid following of fans. When it comes to action cinema in the 2020s, most fans are waiting for the next John Wick chapter to release, and the fourth film released in 2023 in epic fashion. In 2024, there was no John Wick movie to look forward to, but fans ended up getting a solid replacement for one with Monkey Man. The Jordan Peele-produced flick is also the directorial debut of Dev Patel, who stars in the film.

Um, what? In a move we did not see coming, Bridge7, a production company founded by former Netflix executive Swati Shetty and former CAA agent Grant Kessman, has acquired the film sequel and TV rights to Slumdog Millionaire. I’m going to give you a moment to process this.
Are you good? Okay. If you remember, Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire hit the lottery in theaters in 2008. The film stars a young Dev Patel as the older version of Jamal, a young man from the slums of Mumbai who becomes a contestant on the show’ Kuan Banega Crorepati?’ When interrogated under suspicion of cheating, he revisits his past, revealing how he had all the answers. Based on the book Q&a by Vikas Swarup, Boyle’s film serves as Patel’s feature debut after an extended role on the TV series Skins.

Actor Brendan Fraser may be best known for his work in The Mummy franchise, or for Millennials, his memorable turn as Link in Encino Man (1992), but it was his performance in 2022s The Whale that earned him the Best Actor Oscar in 2023. Starting November 1, The Whale will stream on Netflix. In addition to Frasers Oscar-winning performance, the film also took home the Academy Award for Best Achievement in Makeup and Hairstyling in 2023.
In The Whale, Fraser is nearly unrecognizable as he is playing a morbidly obese, gay English professor named Charlie who tries to reconnect with his estranged daughter. The movie is based on a play of the same name by Samuel D. Hunter, and chronicles Charlie, whose health is on the decline, as he tries to get his daughter, Ellie, played by Sadie Sink (Stranger Things) to spend time with him by giving her money.

Dev Patel has been an interesting actor to watch as he always brings an earnestness to his performances that is hard to convey. Along with his breakout performance in Slumdog Millionaire, the actor received enormous praise and accolades for his dramatic range in films like Lion, Hotel Mumbai, The Green Knight, and in his recent directorial debut film Monkey Man.

Daisy Ridley, known best for her role as Rey in the "Star Wars" sequel trilogy, had a brand new, critically acclaimed movie in theaters this past weekend. One would be forgiven for not knowing that, though, as Disney didn't launch a huge campaign for the release of "Young Woman and the Sea." Be that as it may, the Mouse House believes they have a winner on their hands, which is why they put the movie in theaters in the first place. But it's not trying to rake in big bucks at the box office, that's for sure. In fact, the studio isn't even reporting box office numbers for the film at all.
Disney is not sharing official figures for "Young Woman and the Sea," which is odd for a company known for its dominance at the box office in the 2010s. Granted, Disney hasn't been nearly as dominant in the pandemic era,...

Indian actor Vipin Sharma is earning global acclaim for playing a trans character in Dev Patel’s feature directorial debut “Monkey Man.”
Sharma plays Alpha, the leader of a trans community known in India as hijras, who is instrumental in providing a new lease on life to Patel’s character when he’s down and out in “Monkey Man.”
Aamir Khan’s “Taare Zameen Par” (2007) was Sharma’s breakthrough role, and since then he has won plaudits for “Paan Singh Tomar,” “Gangs of Wasseypur” and “Shahid” (all 2012), “Raanjhanaa” (2013), “Raman Raghav 2.0” (2016), “Paatal Lok” (2020) and “Dear Jassi” (2023).
When director Anthony Maras offered Sharma a role in “Hotel Mumbai” (2018), starring Patel, the actor accepted. “He said, ‘It’s not a very big part, but it’s a very interesting part.’ I immediately took it because it was going to make me meet Dev who I really wanted to meet,” Sharma tells Variety.

Dev Patel's feature directorial debut "Monkey Man" hit the ground running with its world premiere at South By Southwest ... but before the movie about an underground brawler hell-bent on revenge became a reality, the actor-turned-filmmaker says it was an idea he was hesitant to bring to life himself. /Film's Ryan Scott is attending SXSW in Austin this week, where Patel spoke about how he went from an actor and co-writer on the project to the man behind the camera.
"I was just trying to find a way to tell this story," Patel explained. "I wanted it out there. Originally, I hired a friend to write it." Paul Angunawela ("Keith Lemon: The Film") and John Collee ("Hotel Mumbai") are both credited as co-writers on the final product, but initially, Patel says two of them worked on it during an intense year-long process. Did you know Dev Patel has had a black belt since he was 16 years old? You probably will now after watching the first trailer for Monkey Man, a new gritty action spectacle which also happens to mark The Green Knight star’s directorial debut.
Indeed, the British born actor has enjoyed a respected career since his teenage years, beginning with the one-two punch of the TV series Skins in 2007 and the Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire the year afterward. Both were impressive debuts that helped paved the way to an eclectic career which has included roles in movies like The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Hotel Mumbai, The Personal History of David Copperfield, and Lion, the last of which earned Patel an Oscar nomination.

Dev Patel's upcoming action film Monkey Man draws inspiration from the John Wick franchise, showcasing similar visual aesthetics, fighting styles, and filmmaking approach. Monkey Man has the potential to be a standout among the numerous John Wick copycats, thanks to its stylized action and the involvement of producer Jordan Peele. Patel's role in Monkey Man as a first-time director and unlikely action hero could establish him as a new talent in the genre, but the film still needs to prove itself as a worthy successor to the John Wick franchise.
An upcoming action movie starring Dev Patel looks to be the perfect replacement for the John Wick franchise. While John Wick 5 is reportedly in development, it's unclear how long the Keanu Reeves franchise will continue after its anticipated 2025 or 2026 release date. Since the breakout success of the first John Wick film back in 2014, the movie series has become...

James Hawes‘ Holocaust drama “One Life” will be the American Express Gala at the 67th BFI London Film Festival.
The film tells the true story of Nicholas ‘Nicky’ Winton, a young London broker who, in the months leading up to WWII, rescued 669 children from the Nazis. Fifty years later, in 1988, Winton is haunted by the fate of the children he wasn’t able to bring to safety in England. It’s not until a live television show “That’s Life” surprises him with the surviving children – now adults – seated all around him that he can finally make peace with the loss he had carried for five decades.
The cast includes Anthony Hopkins, Johnny Flynn, Lena Olin, Romola Garai, Alex Sharp, Marthe Keller, Jonathan Pryce and Helena Bonham-Carter.
Hawes said: “This film pretty much begins and ends in London and says so much about the people of this city, its heart and its history.

While the Cold War has long been over a second one brews between the USA and Russia inside “I.S.S.,” Gabriela Cowperthwaite’s frustratingly broad yet stylish space thriller that just premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival.
Considering the growing political tensions between the two countries today, this is a movie one might be tempted to adorn with adjectives such as “timely” and “urgent.” Except “I.S.S.”—a title inexplicably fashioned with three periods—is too generic a genre exercise to matter, one that vaguely orbits notions such as trust, selflessness, teamwork and the hazards of blind nationalism with the most simplistic messages to transmit about them.

Star Wars has always been a transmedia franchise, with many characters making the jump from animation to live-action - and some recast. In a transmedia franchise like Star Wars, it's quite common for characters to transition from one medium to another. This often requires recasting, usually for practical reasons; it would be too expensive for Lucasfilm to hire Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen for Star Wars: The Clone Wars, for example.
It can work the other way round, of course, especially now animated Star Wars shows are inspiring new live-action Star Wars Disney+ TV shows. Indeed, it's not unusual for voice actors to be recast when their characters transition into a live-action form; they may have no experience in front of the camera, look nothing like the character they've portrayed, or simply not fit a director or showrunner's vision. Fans of “The English Patient” will soon get their wish to see Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche reunite on screen for the first time in 25 years. The pair will star in a new take on Homer’s ancient classic “The Odyssey” called “The Return” as directed by Uberto Pasolini. Bleecker Street has acquired the rights to the film for a planned release in 2024.
“The Return” was first announced in April with both Fiennes and Binoche attached, but the details haven’t firmed up until now. Bleecker Street picked up the North American theatrical rights to the movie out of the European Film Market (EFM) going on now in Berlin. HanWay Films will maintain international rights, and has already locked deals in several territories.
Production on “The Return” will kick off in Greece this spring, filming in Corfu and the Peloponnese, before continuing in Italy.

Among the many Reed Richards fancasts brought up in recent years, rumors point towards an actor who could be a bold choice to play the McU's Mister Fantastic in the upcoming Fantastic Four movie. John Krasinski made his MCU debut as a multiversal variant of Reed Richards in 2022's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. However, his multiversal origin suggests that a different actor will become the McU's official Mister Fantastic in the near future.
While it's still possible for John Krasinski to return as Reed Richards, a wide variety of actors have been fancast as the McU's main Mister Fantastic. But according to a Reddit post by Marvel leaker MSSmods, Dev Patel is headlining Marvel Studios' shortlist for Reed Richards, allegedly after Andor star Diego Luna's departure from Marvel's consideration. MSSmods also claims that Adam Driver is not Marvel's first option — at least not for the Fantastic Four lead role.
