Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival adds Merrin Dungey, Audrey Hsieh, and Audrey Grace Marshall to the cast
Sarah Michelle Gellar in Buffy contre les vampires (1997)
Almost seven years ago, it was announced that a reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer was in development with Monica Owusu-Breen, co-creator of the TV show Midnight, Texas, writing, executive producing, and serving as showrunner. It was said that the new show would be “contemporary, building on the mythology of the original.” That project never made it into production – and earlier this year, it was revealed that we’re going to be getting a Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival instead, with Sarah Michelle Gellar returning to the role of Buffy Summers and Chloé Zhao directing the first episode. Since then, teenage actress Ryan Kiera Armstrong (Firestarter) has been cast as a new slayer (an introverted high school student named Nova)… and now, filming is underway! With cameras rolling, Deadline has learned that Merrin Dungey (The Lincoln Lawyer), Audrey Hsieh (Found), and Audrey Grace Marshall (The Flight Attendant) have joined the cast.

Superman Was a YouTuber: David Corenswet Made Silly YouTube Videos With His Friend in College
Image
Long before he became Superman and Hollywood’s new leading man, David Corenswet was a college student making goofy YouTube sketches with his best friend. His early project, Moe & Jerryweather, is a charmingly low-budget web series that he co-wrote, co-created, and starred in with fellow actor Adam Langdon.

The series follows two offbeat roommates, Moe (played by Langdon) and Jerryweather (Corenswet), as they struggle through attempts to make their own comedy show.

It’s a weird, wonderful mix of oddball sketches. Corenswet plays Jerryweather as the well-meaning but slightly clueless half of the duo, and his comic timing is part of what gives the series its charm.

Moe & Jerryweather may not be polished, but that’s part of the appeal. It’s scrappy, smart, and full of personality. Corenswet’s creativity is all over it, from the writing and acting to the direction, and it offers an early glimpse...

Josh Kelly Drops To Recurring Status At ‘General Hospital’
Image
Earlier this month, it was revealed that actor Josh Kelly was off contract at “General Hospital.” Though his new status remained unclear at the time, we can now report that the actor has officially dropped to recurring at the daytime drama series.

While a reason for the change in status has yet to be announced, and ABC has a policy not to comment on actor contracts, as of the Friday, June 27 episode’s end credits, Kelly’s name appears under the recurring cast list after previously appearing between contract actors Tabyana Ali (Trina Robinson) and Jane Elliot (Tracy Quartermaine).

Sources indicate that Kelly remains a central part of the show’s cast, where he continues to play Cody Bell, the long-lost son of Mac Scorpio (John J. York) and Dominique Baldwin.

Josh Kelly Off Contract At ‘General Hospital’
Image
Although there are currently no indications that the actor is set to exit the daytime drama series, particularly as he continues to appear on the show in any capacity, a recent update to the “General Hospital” end credits indicates actor Josh Kelly (Cody Bell) is now off contract.

As of the Friday, June 20 episode, Kelly’s name no longer appears between contract actors Tabyana Ali (Trina Robinson) and Jane Elliot (Tracy Quartermaine).

Despite appearing in at least one episode last week, the actor did not appear in the recurring cast list, leaving one to wonder if this is a temporary shift for Kelly or an error on the show’s part.

In recent episodes, Cody has found himself entangled with Ava Jerome (Maura West), leaving fans to wonder if there is a brewing romance between the pair, despite Kristina Davis-Corinthos (Kate Mansi) being the initial instigator.

As per network policy,...

Broadcast Used to Be Weird, Fun, and Take Risks — What Happened?
Image
Netflix acquired Blindspot, and it’s been a fun series to revisit after it ended in 2010.

It was a classic case of NBC genre-bending, adapting a convoluted conspiracy thriller with sci-fi elements into a procedural format for general audience consumption.

Broadcast often knows the formula that works best. If you esconce some of the weirdest, most bizarre concepts within a procedural format, it may become a hit.

(Karen Kuehn/NBC)

If you want to explore supernatural and fantasy elements, just set it in a quaint town and make your lead character a detective, and next thing you know, Grimm is one of the most buzzworthy series on the air.

Hey, do you want to bring science-fiction elements to the general audience via creepy technology? No problem!

Dolly Parton
Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series reboot is still in the works, according to Dolly Parton
Dolly Parton
Legendary country star Dolly Parton was an uncredited executive producer on the Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series, as the show came from her production company Sandollar Productions, which she co-founded with her former manager, Sandy Gallin. So if there’s anyone who should have an idea of what’s going on with the Buffy reboot that was announced some years back, it’s Dolly – and she said it’s still in the works.

Five and a half years have gone by since it was announced that a reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer was in development with Monica Owusu-Breen, co-creator of the TV show Midnight, Texas, writing, executive producing, and serving as showrunner. It was said that the new show would be “contemporary, building on the mythology of the original”. Warner Bros. Exec Recalls Casting Chandler: “It Was Magic”
Image
Friends was and is a blessing to so many people around the world. And so was Matthew Perry.

The alchemy of brilliant writing, a stellar cast, voice-of-a-generation twentysomethings, and hilarity and emotionality in abundance, made it a wonderful series in 1994 — and unbeknown to all of us, were the ingredients to continue to impact generations almost 30 years after that. As the head of comedy development at Warner Bros. Television at that time, it’s definitely a shining star in my career.

Casting the six Friends, along with creators Marta Kauffman, David Crane and Kevin Bright, was challenging. They all had to be “stars.” The chemistry had to be believable. You just had to love them. And no one was more elusive than Chandler.

We had happily cast David Schwimmer (Ross), Lisa Kudrow (Phoebe), Courteney Cox (Monica) and Matt LeBlanc (Joey), and we had two roles to go just days before we started production on the pilot.

Blue Fox Entertainment Launches Sales On Sci-Fi Action Thriller ‘Site’
Image
Exclusive: Blue Fox Entertainment announced it has acquired worldwide rights and will be launching sales on the sci-fi thriller Site at the upcoming American Film Market in November. The gripping and thought-provoking film is written and directed by the award-winning Jason Eric Perlman, who was recently named #4 in LA Weekly’s “Top 10 Entertainment Professionals to Watch in 2023.” His debut feature Threshold was released by Sony Pictures after a decorated festival run in 2017.

Blue Fox Entertainment is handling worldwide sales and will preview first look footage of the film for buyers at the upcoming American Film Market (AFM). Blue Fox Entertainment’s US distribution division is planning a theatrical release for the film.

The film stars Jake McLaughlin, Arielle Kebbel, Theo Rossi, and Miki Ishikawa, and Yoson An.

In Site, Neil (Jake McLaughlin) experiences an inexplicable time distortion in an abandoned military test site while inspecting it with his business partner Garrison (Theo Rossi). Soon, Neil is having repeated traumatic flashes back to a WWII prison camp in China called Unit 731, which somehow holds the thread to his own unraveling present. Neil begins to realize that the past lives and events in this place of unspeakable brutality seem to mirror his own trauma with his son Wiley and his wife Elena (Arielle Kebbel). Desperate for answers, Neil enlists Naomi (Miki Ishikawa) to help him find the facility’s last surviving scientist. Ultimately, Neil awakens to a new redemptive responsibility, both within his own family and the greater society around him.

Site is produced by publicist and entrepreneur Benjamin Cooke, Sundance alum, Kelly Hayes, international businesswoman, Yvonne Supangkat, and Jason Eric Perlman.

Blue Fox Entertainment’s James Huntsman said, “Audiences are hungry for high quality science fiction thrillers, which have been scarce in the market recently. With Site, Jason and his talented cast and crew have created an exciting journey that has something relevant to say beneath the surface of the film.”

Director Jason Eric Perlman said, “We are thrilled to have this film beginning its journey in the viewing world. In this time of such unthinkable conflicts I believe it’s vital that creativity explores the interconnectedness of mankind, as well as the atrocities we are capable of inflicting upon one another. Site is intent upon doing both, but with the philosophical imperative that if we ignore history, or the darkness within each of us, we are doomed to repeat the same traumas over and over.

It has been an honor to work with our incredibly talented cast in bringing this story to life, and their commitment to the material elevates it to a remarkable plane. Our visionary crew is also to be credited with what I believe we’ve achieved. The cinematography of Eunah Lee and the brilliant production design of Gabor Norman were integral in the telling of this story to full potential. We are excited to team now with Blue Fox in launching this film into the world.”...

‘Quantum Leap’ Season 2 Premiere Sneak Peek Reveals Where Ben Is & Guest Stars
Image
NBC is going to have some original scripted series as part of its fall 2023 schedule (even with the ongoing writers and actors strikes), and among them is Quantum Leap, returning for its second season in October. The opening of Quantum Leap Season 2 shows what executive producer Martin Gero told TV Insider after the Season 1 finale in April: that Ben, while he does have his memories back, does not return home. Rather, his next leap takes him somewhere over Russia in 1978, on a plane, and the others on board are played by Melissa Roxburgh (Manifest), François Arnaud (Midnight Texas), Aaron Abrams (Blindspot), and P.J. Byrne (The Boys). The five of them are transporting some sort of artifact (shipped out of Germany...

Critically-Panned Fantasy Shows That Are Actually A Lot Of Fun
Image
Fantastical elements have been part of television since 1964's "Bewitched" and 1965's "I Dream of Jeannie. In the following decades, the genre's popularity has only grown, moving beyond family-friendly sitcoms. The '90s brought us "Hercules" and "Xena: Warrior Princess." The 2000s ushered in the massive cultural phenomenon of "Lost." The world of fantasy television is wonderfully expansive, featuring some of the most critically-acclaimed television -- from philosophical comedies like "The Good Place" to time travel romantic dramas like "Outlander," to high fantasy tales of intrigue and betrayal like "House of the Dragon." For every beloved series, there's a critically-panned fantasy flop. Every "Game of Thrones" season 1, there's a "Game of Thrones" season 8.

But the reviews are not the end all be all of a show's enjoyability. After all, art is subjective. Sometimes media that didn't work for critics can still be a great time. Even if a show was not well-received on its release,...

Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series reboot is on pause
Image
Four years have passed since it was announced that a reboot of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series was in the works with Monica Owusu-Breen, co-creator of the TV show Midnight, Texas, writing, executive producing, and serving as showrunner. And since four years have gone by without any further word on the reboot, a lot of fans have probably forgotten that announcement had even happened. (I sure did.) So it’s no surprise to hear from Owusu-Breen’s fellow executive producer Gail Berman (via TV Line) that the reboot is “on pause”.

After the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot was announced, Owusu-Breen sent out the following statement:

For some genre writers it’s Star Wars.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is my Star Wars.

Before I became a writer, I was a fan. For seven seasons, I watched Buffy Summers grow up, find love, kill that love. I watched her fight,...

Denis Leary at an event for Harry Potter et le Prince de sang-mêlé (2009)
Fox’s Denis Leary comedy “The Moodys” was initially designed as a holiday series, but when the show returns for Season 2 next month, don’t expect a Christmas tree.

“We wanted to be able to do episodes throughout the year, and we didn’t want to have to be creatively tied to Christmas every time,” co-showrunner Bob Fisher said at a Television Critics Association panel for Season 2 on Wednesday. “We’re not saying we’ll never do the holidays, but we wanted to be able to just do different kinds of stories throughout the year.”

The family comedy premiered in 2019 as a six-episode “event series” as part of Fox’s holiday slate. The series was an adaptation of the Australian series of the same name, which followed the Moody family across a series of Christmases before expanding to other holidays and important family events.
