First-person shooter (Fps) video games are a dime-a-dozen. Even today, "Call of Duty" dominates mainstream multiplayer gaming, while titles of a similar vein — à la "Apex Legends" or "Valorant" — help shape the genre's ever-evolving nature. However, the Fps genre hallmarks that are taken for granted today were painstakingly shaped by groundbreaking titles that consciously pushed the limits of a shoot-to-kill premise. Some endeavors, like the original "Doom," are still remembered with the nostalgic reverence it deserves (having even inspired an objectively terrible movie adaptation starring Dwayne Johnson). But others, like Steven Spielberg and Electronic Arts' (EA) "Medal of Honor" series, have sadly been relegated to the realm of forgotten Fps games that are no longer relevant.
If you're surprised to see a direct connection between Spielberg and a video game series, it is worth delving into how this came about. Long story short, the now-dissolved game studio DreamWorks Interactive worked...

Rupert Friend is heading into the Berlinale a little anxious.
The British actor, a veteran of the industry with major roles in Homeland, Pride & Prejudice and, most recently, Drew Hancock’s buzzy thriller Companion, was only a “whip of a thing” when Chéri premiered in competition at the 2009 Berlin Film Festival.
“I was 25 and it was probably my first big lead role,” the now-43-year-old tells The Hollywood Reporter. “From the first 20 seconds, you just felt the audience… lean back. The movie finished and it was the sound of one, slow clap. I just died.”
After this “bombing” of Stephen Frears’ Colette adaptation, Friend was a little wary of the spotlight. It impacted him for a long time after, he confesses, even though he landed the part of a key character in the wildly successful Showtime series Homeland shortly after.
It’s only right that Friend returns to Berlin with a vengeance: not one,...

There are numerous first time directors at this year’s Berlinale, but few come with the sort of indie film credits on Rebecca Lenkiewicz’s resume.
The British playwright and screenwriter had worked on the script for Pawel Pawlikowski’s Oscar-winning “Ida” alongside the director, on “Disobedience” with Sebastián Lelio and on “Colette” with Wash Westmoreland, before going it alone to turn Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey’s book about their industry-shaking Harvey Weinstein expose into the script that would become Maria Schrader’s “She Said” in 2022.
But with “Hot Milk,” which bowed at the Palaste on Friday, she moved closer to the camera and made it her directorial debut. Adapted (by Lenkiewicz) from Deborah Levy’s book and shot in Greece, the story is set under the hot Spanish summer and follows Sofia, a young woman (Emma Mackey) in a co-dependent relationship with her wheelchair-bound mother Rose (Fiona Shaw...

When Julianne Moore accepted her 2015 Oscar for Still Alice, she made a point of thanking me and my husband: “And finally, to the filmmakers, Wash Westmoreland and Richard Glatzer, who had hoped to be here tonight but can’t, because of Richard’s health. When Richard was diagnosed with Als, Wash asked him what he wanted to do. Did he want to travel? Did he want to see the world? And he said that he wanted to make movies.”
The declaration she referred to took place three years before. Richard had just been told it was highly likely he had Als. The weight of terms like total paralysis, locked-in, and no cure was beginning to settle, dramatically reshaping our sense of the future.

Keira Knightley explained why she has always enjoyed acting in period piece movies. Knightley became one of the most popular actors in the world after starring in the Pirates of the Caribbean films. However, she did not partake in any major franchises after playing a pirate for many years. Instead, Knightley has preferred to star in one-off films, and has specifically shown a special interest in period piece projects. Knightley has starred in popular period piece movies such as Pride & Prejudice, Atonement, and The Imitation Game.
In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Knightley revealed why she has starred in so many period piece movies. She left school at 16 years old to pursue a career in Hollywood, so Knightley claimed that starring in period pieces has always been a way for her to learn more about history. Shojo manga and anime offerings boast many strong series that are good for the soul, and with Colette Decides to Die, even the souls of the Underworld can benefit from the genre's healing influence. Hailing from the storied Hakusensha magazine Hana to Yume, home to Yona of the Dawn, Fruits Basket, and Kamisama Kiss, Colette Decides to Die follows a romantic fantasy twist with a Greek mythological twist. Despite the series debuting in 2013, it's finally getting an English print release thanks to Viz Media, with volume #1 holding a mighty 402 pages of Alto Yukimura's Greek myth romance manga.
Hana to Yume's manga series tend to receive wildly successful anime adaptations, with many of its iconic series often gracing best romance anime lists before mentioning its series' uplifting explorations of human connection. Even though many of these cases involve non-humans in the mixture, such as deities, the principle remains the same. Colette...

There are nine legendary stars who only need a Grammy to achieve the Egot grand slam of show business awards: Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony (see the gallery at the bottom of this post). None of them were on the list of 2025 Grammy nominees, though, when they were announced on Friday morning, but there is a nominee this year who could get three quarters of the way there if he wins: composer Kris Bowers.
Bowers is nominated for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media for his work on the movie musical adaptation of “The Color Purple.” It’s the third nomination for the composer, who previously contended for Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella for “Blue Skies” in 2020 and then in the score soundtrack race in 2022 for the Netflix series “Bridgerton.” A victory this year for “Color Purple” would put him just a Tony away from achieving Egot status.

According to Gold Derby’s current combined predictions, “The Wild Robot” is the frontrunner to win Best Animated Feature at the Oscars with 10/3 odds. If it prevails, it would be just the third film from DreamWorks Animation to do so. But the movie may prove to be an even stronger contender than many are expecting.
SEEExperts slugfest mailbag: ‘Gladiator II,’ ‘The Wild Robot’ in Best Picture, and is Saoirse Ronan due?
Adapted from Peter Brown’s 2016 children’s book of the same name, “The Wild Robot” follows an intelligent robot named Roz (Lupita Nyong’o) who is shipwrecked on an island, bonds with the animals there, and cares for an orphaned baby goose (Kit Connor). The movie currently holds an impressive 98% freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes and has so far made over $270 million at the worldwide box office.

After a busy August with the Season 2 premiere of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” which continues throughout September with new episodes through Oct. 3, “Batman: Caped Crusader,” and more, Amazon streaming services Prime Video and Freevee will have a comparably quiet September.
Most of the action for the month will come from Prime Video’s sports options. After the Sept. 5 Kickoff Game at Arrowhead Stadium with the defending Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs going up against the Baltimore Ravens, Prime Video’s third season of Thursday Night Football begins with AFC East champs Buffalo Bills taking on the Miami Dolphins in Miami. The WNBA and Nwsl also continue their seasons on Prime Video, with matches all month long from New York Liberty, Phoenix Mercury, Angel City Fc, and more top teams.

When Andrew Karpen wants to convince a filmmaker to let him release their movie, he doesn’t blow them away by offering more and more money. For one thing, Bleecker Street, the indie studio he founded in 2014, doesn’t have the financial firepower of an Apple or a Netflix.
“Our pitch is always centered around the kind of experience that they will have with us, knowing that we will be collaborative and transparent,” Karpen says. “I always say, ‘This is not a campaign where you will just be emailed the final poster and trailer and given two tickets to the premiere.’”
And over nearly 70 films, that openness has kept Karpen and his small but mighty staff in the game. While Bleecker is celebrating its 10th anniversary, many of its competitors haven’t managed to survive in a business that’s only become more treacherous to navigate. Several of Bleecker’s contemporaries,...

Keira Knightley was critical about wearing corsets for her role in Pirates of the Caribbean, despite admitting that it was an easy way to slip into the character of a royal woman. She believed that women should have burned these dresses centuries ago. While the actress’s view about the constricting garment remained the same even after all these years, she has come to accept the vitality of the costume for the character.
Pirates of the Caribbean actress Keira Knightley was vocal about her hate for corsets
Knightley was just 18 when she was cast in the role of Elizabeth Swann in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. Apart from the challenging costumes, she also revealed that she was forced to do some stunts that she wasn’t trained for in the movie.

This year, Gold Derby’s Oscar winners odds derived from the predictions of a record 11,034 users, constituting a 1.6% participation increase compared to 2023. Naturally, such a large group is prone to intense hive mentality, which can be a good or bad thing, often depending on the category. In this case, the crowd had a handle on most of the 23 races, but there were still quite a few that tripped them up, leading to our lowest rate of accuracy in five years.
By the end of the 96th Oscars, six of Gold Derby’s expected wins had failed to pan out, making for a final accuracy rate of 73.9%. Each subgroup whose predictions were used to calculate our combined odds – including 29 industry experts, 12 in-house editors, and thousands of regular users – collectively finished with the same percentage, although our editors stood alone in being right about Best Costume Design but wrong about Best Live Action Short.

With the annual ceremony of The Oscars comes the understandable hype and speculation of who will be winners on the night. Despite there not being a Video Game category in the awards ceremony, there are still links to the industry itself with none other than Steven Spielberg.
The titan of the film industry is no stranger to academic recognition and has seen various accolades over the years. However, some people may be surprised to learn that despite his distinguished career in the film industry, he has also had a well-recognized influence on the gaming industry and is responsible for some well-known classic titles.
Are the Oscars and video games, intertwined?

Everyone is aware of how talented director Steven Spielberg is, however, not many people know that the director is equally influential in the gaming industry. In 1999, the director created and served as a producer for a first-person shooter video game, Medal of Honor, which was developed by DreamWorks Interactive and published by Electronic Arts.
Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond
The Medal of Honor franchise was quite popular in the 2000s, however, the competition from franchises like Call of Duty and Battlefield slowed it down. In 2020, the franchise made a strong comeback with Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond. It was certainly a remarkable game as it became the only video game to win an Oscar. The game includes the short documentary Colette, which won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Subject at the 93rd Academy Awards.

Denise Gough and Keira Knightley in Colette Photo: Bleeker Street Colette, 11.15pm, BBC2, Monday, November 20
Wash Westmoreland's film about the Belle Époque writer follows her on her journey to liberation from her naive provincial upbringing. She begins to blossom as her books about saucy schoolgirl Claudine - sold under the name of her husband Willy (Dominic West) start to fly off the shelves. There's an engaging complexity to the relationship between Willy and Colette which twists as the film progresses. Denise Gough also puts in a scene-stealing supporting performance as Missy, with whom Colette engages in a same-sex relationship. Beyond the impressive performances, the period is beautifully rendered and despite the film's consideration of ownership, oppression and control ultimately plays like a celebration of freedom of thought. Read what Westmoreland had to say about the influence of Max Ophüls, La Belle Époque and on the relationships in Colette.

With the true crime TV movie “Boston Strangler,” Keira Knightley has made a welcome return to the genre she excels in — period dramas. The new Hulu telefilm chronicles the true story of Loretta McLaughlin, the reporter who connected the murders of the Boston Strangler and broke the story for Boston Record American.
The killer murdered 13 women in the 1960s and McLaughlin (Knightley) reported on the ongoing story alongside Jean Cole (Carrie Coon) while dealing with the sexism of the era at the same time. It’s her haunting facial expressions and dogged determinism as McLaughlin that propels the movie forward. The film opens in 2020. A woman paints her lips crimson while staring at her reflection in the mirror, studying the details of her wavy blonde wig and firetruck-red skirt. Satisfied with her examination, she relaxes her shoulders and turns to the other side of the room. The camera follows and lands on a child sleeping peacefully. The woman covers the slumbering body with a blanket, gingerly plants a kiss and leaves. Outside, in the dimly lit streets of Dakar, she is followed by a chorus of men wearing complementary red djellabas. “When a drop of water falls on Earth / it’s no longer Earth,” they sing as she walks down the street, “How life is full of surprises.”
The chorus, a staple in Moussa Sène Absa’s films, is particularly useful in Xalé, the director’s passionate thriller about gender violence and retribution. It’s the last installment in the...

Exclusive: Oscar-winning Up composer Michael Giacchino will make his big-screen directing debut with a reboot of the 1954 sci-fi man-eating monster movie Them! at Warner Bros.
Giacchino is meeting with writers in hopes of getting the production up quite soon.
In the Gordon Douglas-directed original film, which also was a Warner Bros. release, a huge nest of irradiated ants are discovered in the New Mexico desert and become a national threat when two young queen ants and their consorts escape to set up new nests. The national search that ensues culminates in a battle in spillways and storm drains of Los Angeles.

He adds: “What I love about Them! is exactly what it’s called: Them!
