One Star Trek myth is not at all true, and another is as true as ever. Captain Kirk never actually uttered a phrase widely considered to be part and parcel of Star Trek lore: “Beam me up, Scotty.” However, Dr. McCoy did declare, “I’m a doctor, not a…” on multiple occasions. And by Dr. McCoy, we mean both the Og ship’s medic, DeForest Kelley, and the Kelvin timeline’s iteration, Karl Urban.
Here are three of our favorite instances of McCoy barking “I’m a doctor, not a…” Please note that we are not including variations of the line from The Original Series, like “What am I, a doctor or a moon shuttle conductor?” (from “The Corbomite Maneuver”) or “I’m not a magician, Spock, just an old country doctor” (from “The Deadly Years”).
McCoy, in “The Devil in the Dark,” expressed exasperation at being ordered to “Help it.

Klingons evolved from ruthless conquerors in Star Trek: The Original Series to honorable warriors in The Next Generation. Kor, Koloth, and Kang made their mark on Star Trek, returning in DS9 to show how Klingons changed. Classic Trek episodes highlighted Klingons as cunning, aggressive foes, showcasing their evolution.
The Klingons became one of Star Trek's most iconic and recognizable alien species after appearing in only seven episodes of Star Trek: The Original Series. The Klingons have changed more than any other species throughout Star Trek's long history, and many aspects of Klingon culture were not established until after Tos. Vasquez Rocks is located in the northern part of Los Angeles County about 25 minutes away from Downtown L.A. via the 14 freeway. It's close enough to the city to be easily accessed by car, but far away enough to look like a remote wilderness. The park's celebrated rock formations look eerie, ancient, and alien from certain angles, making it a popular place for film and TV productions going back to the 1930s.
Trekkies likely recognize Vasquez Rocks as an oft-reused filming location, serving as a variety of alien worlds for various "Star Trek" projects. The park was featured in the "Original Series" episodes "Shore Leave", "Arena", "The Alternative Factor", and "Friday's Child". Later, Vasquez Rocks would serve as Vulcan "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock" and "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home," released in 1983 and 1984 respectively.
Fans of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" would recognize Vasquez Rocks from the episode "Who Watches the Watchers?...

Age Out (A.J. Edwards)
The only thing worse than never getting your happy ending is having it within grasp and realizing you cannot accept it. To see salvation and turn around knowing it would be a lie is the type of heartbreaking choice we often have to make in order to keep on going. It’s the decision that separates man from monster: an admission of remorse, guilt, and regret. Our actions cause ripples that affect countless others we haven’t met yet or never will and while that truth allows some to sleep at night, the rest wonder what nightmares the collateral damage of their deeds endure as a result. You could say that the only thing separating those two groups is love.

After getting his start with Terrence Malick on the editing team for The New World, Knight of Cups, and Song to Song, A.J. Edwards has proven to be a formidable writer-director in his own right. Following The Better Angels and Age Out, his third feature, First Love, will now arrive in theaters and on VOD on June 17 and the first trailer has debuted. Starring Hero Fiennes Tiffin, Diane Kruger, Jeffrey Donovan, and Sydney Park, the film features new original music by Arcade Fire’s Richard Reed Parry.
The story follows Jim (Fiennes Tiffin), a senior in high school experiencing the highs and lows of his first love with Ann (Park) as they navigate their pending departure to college. At the same time, Jim’s parents (Kruger and Donovan) are dealing with the familial fallout of a financial crisis. Cinematography is courtesy of Jeff Bierman, who worked with Edwards on Age...

"After your first, live is never the same." Voltage Pictures has debuted an official trailer for First Love, a new romantic comedy from filmmaker A.J. Edwards, following his other two indies The Better Angels and Age Out. There have been way too many films named First Love, or about teenage first love recently, making everything a bit confusing as to what is what. This is described as a poignant look at a young man's difficult entry into adulthood. First Love follows Jim, played by Hero Fiennes Tiffin from the After franchise, a senior in high school who experiences the highs & lows of his first love with Ann, played by Sydney Park. At the same time, his parents are dealing with the familial fallout spurred by the financial crisis of 2008. Also starring Diane Kruger, Jeffrey Donovan, Diane Venora, and Nanrisa Lee. It looks like made-for-tv derivative cheesy junk, hitting all the...

Actor Tye Sheridan is wearing a different hat with his new media-tech startup — which he claims will let indie filmmakers deliver blockbuster-level VFX on a fraction of the budget.
Sheridan (above right) co-founded Wonder Dynamics with visual-effects artist Nikola Todorovic (above left). Over the last four years, the duo have been quietly experimenting with using artificial intelligence and machine learning to create interactive video applications. Now Wonder Dynamics is gearing up to introduce a new AI production tool that they promise will let independent artists produce dazzling VFX and CGI animations for far less than is required today.
“It breaks down the barriers to achieving your wildest vision,” Sheridan told Variety. “A lot of times people dream up this story but it’s not possible to make because it would cost $200 million. AI can democratize VFX.”

In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, let us raise a dirty glass to the spirit of Irish music, wherever in the world it shows up. And like the Irish people themselves, Irish music shows up everywhere, usually a few moments after the bottles get opened. There’s always been plenty of great music on the island, but the really staggering part (apart from all the staggering) is how far that music travels, following the immigrant experience.

An act of difficult transition not often captured in cinema is that of aging out, a term referring to when a teenager’s foster care term ends and they enter independent living. In his second feature, which draws its title from this term, writer-director A.J. Edwards captures this moment of isolation and loneliness with immediacy and gracefulness. Age Out tells the story of Richie (Tye Sheridan), a teenage drifter just out of foster care who finds a new love and trouble in Texas, with a cast also including Imogen Poots, Caleb Landry Jones, and Jeffrey Wright.

Who is Amanda Grayson? Everything you definitely don’t know about Spock and Michael Burnham’s mom in Star Trek.
Warning: This Star Trek: Discovery articles contains spoilers for Season 2, Episode 7: “Light and Shadows.”
In Star Trek: Discovery, we’ve gotten to know the character of Amanda Grayson a whole lot better than we ever did in either The Original Series or any of the films. Famously introduced in 1967 episode “Journey to Babel,” Amanda (as played by Jane Wyatt) was seemingly just as steady and smart as her husband Sarek and her son Spock.
In Discovery, we’re learning exactly why Amanda is so badass, and also, why she’s a great mom. Mia Kirshner’s version of Amanda is giving new dimension to the character, but to be, fair, the depth of Amanda has been there since the beginning, and, in some cases, lurking in...

"You know what we call it?" A teaser trailer has debuted online for a film titled Friday's Child, the latest feature from filmmaker A.J. Edwards, who worked for Terrence Malick as his editor before jumping into making his own films. Tye Sheridan stars as young drifter Richie, fresh out of foster care, trying to figure out what to do with himself. He ends up on the streets involved in petty crime and meets two other people: Joan, played by Imogen Poots, and Swim, played by Caleb Landry Jones. The film's cast also includes Jeffrey Wright and Brett Butler. This looks like a very artsy, powerfully intimate film with some very intense cinematography by Dp Jeff Bierman. The score in this trailer is superb, and the footage will pull you in - for whatever you may find in here. This is a good palette cleanser from all the recent Hollywood trailers.

Magnolia Pictures has released the first trailer for their upcoming indie thriller Detour, which is set to debut in theaters and on iTunes January 20. The film will have plenty of competition in theaters, going up against four films in wide release, The Weinstein Company's The Founder, Universal Pictures' Split, Paramount's XXX: The Return of Xander Cage and High Top Releasing's The Resurrection of Gavin Stone. It isn't clear how wide a release Detour will receive quite yet, but this indie thriller could make some waves at the box office, even in a limited release.

They grow up so fast *sniffle*. Tye Sheridan, the child actor revelation from Terence Malick's The Tree of Life (quite a debut) and Mud is already 19 years old and in major demand. What accounts for his mutant super power of aging rapidly is that Tree of Life actually began shooting when Tye was just 11. Malick takes forever in post production, don'cha know. Male stars don't tend to really come into their A list own until their late 20s or early 30s. DiCaprio is the grand exception to the rule but usually the ones that break out in their late teens or early 20s more commonly have career trajectories, like, oh, Chris O'Donnell. That's partially because the juicy roles for men tend to be the ones that require a 30 or 40something actor. So it's anyone's guess as to whether or not Sheridan can build on his rather solid first five years in the movies.
