It took six years for Andrei Tarkovsky’s somber epic Andrei Rublev to be publicly released in the former Ussr. By the time people flocked to sold-out Moscow theaters in 1971—nine years after Tarkovsky’s feature debut Ivan’s Childhood nabbed the Golden Lion at the 1962 Venice Festival, and six after Rublev’s production wrapped in 1965—the cultural Thaw granted under Khrushchev’s leadership had frozen over. Judged too controversial by Soviet authorities—all the more so as the Ussr braced for the 50th anniversary of the 1917 Revolution—the film was shelved after a single screening at Moscow’s Dom Kino, chopped from 205 to 186 minutes (a version Tarkovsky would later approve) and only sent abroad in 1969, when Cannes squeezed it in a 4:00 am out of competition screening that earned Tarkovsky the edition’s Fipresci award. For audiences nurtured on bombastic patriotic epics concerned primarily with the need to trace...

Stay in the loop on industry and casting news with our write-up on who’s been slated for recent film and television roles! “Rent”Fox has 525,600 reasons to take on another live musical: the success of “Grease Live!” and its Easter-themed musical “The Passion” has caused the network to eye potential follow-ups. “Rent” follows a group of bohemian New Yorkers living in Alphabet City and working to enact social and political change at the turn of the 1990s. Riddled with the realities of drugs, HIV and AIDS, homelessness, and love, the show earned four Tony Awards and a Pulitzer Prize for drama. The lauded production drew the attention of Hollywood and, in 2005, became a movie musical with much of the original Broadway cast. Fox, however, is unlikely to call up any of those cast members—Idina Menzel, Tracie Thoms, Jesse L. Martin, Rosario Dawson, Anthony Rapp, or Adam Pascal—for its live rendition.

If the high-profile releases of the summer have been bumming you out, fear not, a masterwork will arrive at the end of the season, albeit one half-a-century old. On the heels of recent theatrical releases and subsequent home releases of a pair of Andrei Tarkosvky restorations, Stalker and The Sacrifice, another masterpiece from the director will be getting the same treatment this summer.
His second feature Andrei Rublev, which follows the life of the iconic painter in medieval Russia, has been given a new high-definition restoration from Janus Films, and a new trailer has now arrived. The gorgeous-looking restoration of the black-and-white classic will exclusively open at NYC’s Film Society of Lincoln Center in late August (featuring Tarkovsky’s preferred 183-minute cut), then the following month, it will join The Criterion Collection in a disc that also includes the 205-minute version, The Passion According to Andrei, as well as many,...

Deadpool was one of the big box office stories of 2016. No one expected an R-rated superhero film to be such a massive hit (in February no less!) and instead the film opened to $132 million on its way to pulling in $783 million worldwide. It currently holds the record for an opening weekend for an R-rated film and is narrowly below The Passion of the Christ for highest-grossing R-rated film of all-time. While it’s unknown if it will take the title from The Passion, Deadpool 2 will almost certainly beat the first film …...

Updated: “Jesus Christ Superstar Live” carried NBC to a win in the Nielsen overnight ratings on Easter Sunday.
Airing from 8-10:23 p.m., “Jesus Christ Superstar Live” drew a 1.7 rating in adults 18-49 and 9.4 million viewers. NBC’s last live musical, “Hairspray Live,” drew a 2.3 rating in adults 18-49 and 9 million viewers back in December 2016. It is also up slightly over Fox’s live version of the religious-themed “The Passion” musical from March 2016, which drew a 1.6 and 6.6 million viewers. However, as “Jesus Christ Superstar” ended at 10:23 p.m., its initial numbers will be subject to adjustment later today.
Elsewhere on broadcast, a new episode of “American Idol” (1.6, 7.4 million) held steady with last week’s Sunday episode. “Deception” (0.8, 4.2 million) ticked up slightly in the demo.
For CBS, “60 Minutes” (0.7, 8.1 million) unsurprisingly fell from the massive ratings drawn by the Stormy Daniels interview the show aired last week. Freshman drama...

For weeks, Fox has been promoting their two-hour live musical event The Passion, but portions of the special telecast were indeed pre-recorded because of logistical reasons. Some of the set locations were too far apart for the actors to realistically make it to their next scene during the course of a commercial break. But the cross procession and stage performances of contemporary hits are performed live."Fox cast primarily singers with acting backgrounds and 98 percent of The Passion is sung," Jencarlos Canela - who plays Jesus Christ - tells People. Executive Producer Mark Bracco is passionate about “The Passion,” but even he knows something will probably go wrong during Fox’s ambitious live musical event. “You just never know,” he told TheWrap. “Are the odds that something is going to go wrong at some point? Yeah, pretty much.” While the odds are always against pulling off a perfect live broadcast, it seems extra likely that a hiccup could come from Bracco’s 20-foot, 284.87-pound cross and 1,000-person procession through the streets of New Orleans. After all, not every road will be closed this weekend, and the gang has only even practiced it once thus far,...
