Touching, understated

A simple movie, but not necessarily predictable (the main twist in the plot I didn't see coming). This film deserves a high rating: it's not high drama, but instead is beautifully understated. I enjoyed the acting as none of the characters were incomprehensibly evil, overly emotional or crazy. They were just simple caring people in an unusual situation. Some aspects of the plot were a little unbelievable, but it didn't spoil the overall story which is a positive message of love for our fellow human, and compassion. So many films are about romantic love or defending the family or other selfish methods of preserving our own genes. This film reaches something about how it is to empathise with someone else, and how love doesn't have to be selfish or even logical, but is just how we are. Yep, can be considered a family movie, but I feel that denegrates what is actually a well filmed, nicely acted and simple but beautiful story. Yup, I cried. And as a late 40s ex military, it wasn't cos of something pathetic and superficial, but because of something touching and profound. I recommend this to everyone over 16 (younger people can watch and enjoy it but probably will find it difficult sympathising with a protagonist who is much older, dealing with meeting his daughter for the first time in 20 years).

underated

It is simple but complex at the same time. Wendell Pierce is great and brings sincerity to all his roles Jurnee Smollett-Bell brings a special touch to the movie as well It may have a few holes in it but its honest and for most part moving Its not a long film but that suits the story In the end some people wait to be kind just because they can! Have some tissues handy but for few different reasons

A lovely movie

From the start, I felt Dylan. His slow, lonely, methodical life was sad to see. Then, he was given the gift of relationships. Throughout the movie, we were reminded that we were created to touch and interact with others. In our social media-techno world, it is easy to forget the beauty of letters and dinners and boat rides and meaningful conversation while strolling.

Wendell, Jurnee and Joanne are fine actors and their talents were on display. At times, the dialogue was not the best. However, it worth sticking around until the end.

It was OK- no violence is always a good thing!

The lead was so lovable and the settings were too! Maybe a little predictable, but thats not always a bad thing. Maybe its just me- but I really dont have a problem w/the gay lifestyle, but why does Hollywood SEEM to be pushing the gay/mix race relationships on us? I could have been fine if it had been a straight group- not sure how this plays out to youth? Same with product advertisements- seems like they have an agenda?

Family

Wendell Pierce is a dentist in Florida who is an avid golfer. He has been looking for his daughter for 25 years. Finally the private detective tracks her down. It's Jurnee Smollet. She is a photographer who lives in Brooklyn. He flies to Brooklyn and trails her for a couple of days. He almost leaves, but finally speaks to her. She is skittish at first, but they finally establish a relationship. But there are other problems.

It's a story about the problems with any relationship, one that should take place over decades, but has to be compressed into a few months. This gives it an artificial feel. But the simplicity of the performances, the diffidence of the actors gives it a sense of reality that is compelling.

flip it and reverse it

Quiet Florida dentist Dylan Derringer (Wendell Pierce) spends his spare time perfecting his golf game. Jaime (Joanne Froggatt) is his assistant. He tracks down his daughter Lucy (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) in Brooklyn. She's a daughter that he didn't know he had for 25 years.

This doesn't have the loudest of dramas. It's very quiet. At first, I'm expecting Hallmark channel but this is trying to throwback to a quieter melodrama. I appreciate Wendell Pierce. For the drama, I would flip the characters and have Lucy search for her father. She could be searching for organ donors and that would give additional colors to their relationship. It would make another layer to everything and elevate this rather slow melodrama.

A family drama that will pull at your heart strings

I usually don't watch these kinds of movies but decided to give it a try. The acting was good and the story line was emotional. It was predictable where the story was going, but still managed to bring those heart felt moments.

Great for a family movie.

WHAT A CHARMING and DELIGHTFUL MOVIE

With all of the violence and excessive sex in today's movies, it was so wonderful to watch a movie that had none of that, but instead has depth and warmth. One Last Thing is one of the sweetest and tenderest movie I have seen in years. I wasn't expecting something so touching from a movie that wasn't highly rated. Big mistake by those that rated it. I don't even remember seeing it advertised at the movies. But I am glad that Netflix picked it up. Kudos to the writers and to the actors. Well done.

The Last Thing

Sometimes the writer should not be the director. I came away asking how did they get Wendell to play the role in this Hallmark-ish mock and predictable feel something, anything piece? Must less I asked how did they get Abby Downton's Froggatt to portray the role of his assistant? No other actors are worth mentioning because they were either awful or the writer/director just didn't do his job right. Could it have turned out better? I sure hope so but I don't feel that it even warrants mention among better movies. A director's skills can compliment what the writer wrote. A good director can almost draw blood from a rock. The script idea is nothing new but it could have earned maybe a high-five from me if it didn't seem like Wendell and Foggratt owed favors to be in this failed sophomoric attempt. I cried when it was over because I couldn't get my time back. Too bad.

Very Underrated!!!!

Though it has some plot holes and unanswered questions. The film express the meaning of what family love should be, no matter race or creed heartwarming with a bit of a twist....ps. have your tissue ready, and enjoy the beautiful story and acting.

Why was this movie rated for mature audiences

Why was it rated as mature? There were no gratuitous violence or sex scenes and hardly any profanity. I would have rated it PG at best.

A bit of a twist on father finding daughter,. Not the usual. Wendell Pierce is good. Kleenex required.

Complicated Beautifully

Beautifully scripted story. Everyone goes through life hoping to find what these people found. Being vulnerable is hard but the rewards can be dreadful or beautiful. Take the risk and watch this movie where you get to see two amazing performances.

Very good story

I'm a huge fan of Wendell Pierce for his acting and activism. Glad he got to play leading role for a change.

Very good and slightly sappy story of a man who has been searching for his daughter for 2 decades.

Sometimes we do get to choose our family!

Ok but....

It's add okay movie. Would have been better without all of the cursing and the same-sex relationship. Not necessary in a story like this. The ending ruined it for me.
