France’s Canal+ has increased its stake in Viu to 36.8% as part of its $300M investment in the Southeast Asian streamer. This represents the last instalment of the cash injection and follows a strategic agreement Canal+ struck with Viu parent Pccw last year in June. The initial investment was $200M for a 26.1% stake, meaning it likely has paid $100M for the further 10.7%. Canal+ has the option to increase its stake in Viu to 51% in the future. Viu currently operates in 16 markets across Asia, the Middle East and South Africa and claimed to have over 62 million active monthly users, with 13 million paying subscribers, as of December 2023. It recorded revenues of $314M last year, which represented growth of 23% year over year. The creators and stars of upcoming Stephen Merchant-starring BBC1 factual drama Four Lives about serial killer Stephen Port’s crimes have slammed London’s Metropolitan Police and the UK justice system for “monumental failings” over the case. Merchant also teased his approach to playing the lead role of Port, describing him as “like the shark from Jaws in that the shark is unknowable.”

Steve Coogan (Philomena) has been cast as Jimmy Savile in BBC One drama The Reckoning.
Savile rose from working-class origins to become one of the biggest stars of British television, but faced rumors of misconduct during his career. After his death in 2011, the full extent of his crimes, which included sexually abusing hundreds of child victims, were revealed.
The controversial TV project, first revealed in October last year, comes from Neil McKay and executive producer Jeff Pope (The Moorside) and is produced by ITV Studios. It will be directed by Sandra Goldbacher (Ordeal by Innocence).
The team said they are working closely with people whose lives were impacted by Savile to ensure their stories are told with sensitivity and respect. It will look into the way Saville used his celebrity and powerful connections to conceal his wrongdoings and to hide in plain sight.

‘Hurry Up and Wait’ is an uncomfortable half-hour with a macabre conclusion, as befits the creators and director of Psychoville (which in Dawn French’s Joy, also featured a grown woman with a sinister attachment to a baby doll, that one following the death of her own son – the dead baby being the sine qua non of subversive comedy.) The episode is an emotionally cold grotesquerie driven by social awkwardness, cringe comedy, and light satire on the acting world.

The BBC has commissioned a UK version of Pooch Perfect, the competitive reality series based on the UK/Australian format.
English actress/singer Sheridan Smith will host the eight-part UK series, produced by Seven Studios UK.
The format was created by Seven Studios’ UK head of development Nikki Pinkus, creative director Damon Pattison and Sonya Wilkes, co-head of unscripted for Seven Studios Australia.
Rebel Wilson hosts the Aussie production, which premiered on February 27 on the Seven Network, winning its 7.30 pm slot in all people and key 25-54 demographic.
However the ratings for the second series in the mainland capitals averaged 441,000, down from the premiere’s 624,000, suggesting a short-lived novelty factor.
Seven Studios UK’s first original commission, the series will feature 10 pairs of professional dog stylists from around the country as they take part in themed challenges to transform pets as they vie for the title of the UK’s top dog stylist.

Exclusive: Hostile Planet producer Plimsoll Productions is moving into scripted. The natural history producer has hired Lisa Gilchrist, producer of Dominic West-fronted crime thriller Appropriate Adult, as Head of Drama.
This comes six months after the company, which also produces series such as Yellowstone Live and Netflix’s Night on Earth, has secured multi-million-dollar investment from private equity firm Ldc.
Gilchrist, who reports to Plimsoll CEO Grant Mansfield, has worked with Mrs Wilson producer Snowed-In Productions as well as ITV and the BBC. Other projects she has worked on include ITV’s See No Evil: The Moors Murders and This is Personal: The Hunt for the Yorkshire Ripper and BBC One’s The Moorside.
She has been tasked with developing original scripted series with an initial focus on factual drama for the UK and international marketplace.

“The Crown” won only one of its three races at the 2018 BAFTA TV Awards on May 13 when Vanessa Kirby claimed the supporting actress prize for her riveting portrayal of Princess Margaret. Sophie Rundle, Gemma Whelan, Timothy West and Gemma Jones have been tapped to co-star opposite Suranne Jones in Gentleman Jack (fka Shibden Hall), HBO and BBC One’s eight-episode drama series from BAFTA-winning writer Sally Wainwright. The historical drama “The Crown,” which chronicles the first years of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, led the BAFTA TV Awards nominations for the second year in a row, with three bids including Best Drama Series. SAG and Golden Globe winner Claire Foy reaped a Best Actress nomination for her sensitive portrayal of the young monarch. And Vanessa Kirby contends for her scene-stealing turn as younger sister Princess Margaret. However, Matt Smith was snubbed again for his subdued take on Prince Phillip.

A new Channel 4 series produced alongside streaming service Netflix, The End Of The F***ing World is set to launch as a complete box set on All 4 later in the month, and the first episode will premiere on the channel ahead of that.
Written by Charlie Covell (Humans) and based on the comics by Charles Forsman, the 8-episode series has been directed by talented up-and-comers Jonathan Entwistle and Lucy Tcherniak. It looks dark as hell and utterly intriguing, and now you can take a look at the first clips from the forthcoming show yourself, courtesy of Channel 4.
