Game On: French TV Giant TF1 Breaks Down The Trend Defining Its Unscripted Plans
Image
Exclusive: TF1 is France’s largest commercial broadcaster with an unscripted output that includes the local versions of Survivor, The Masked Singer and Dancing With The Stars. Locally, it has formats including Star Academy, Master of the Game and The Parisian Agency, which is on Netflix globally.

The next turn of the wheel in unscripted is all about ‘gamification’, Julien Degroote, EVP and Head of Content Development at the broadcaster tells Deadline in an exclusive interview. That applies across any quiz, shiny floor and reality shows, and defines what TF1 wants in its unscripted fare, he goes on to explain.

“What feeds our thoughts is a big trend of what we call ‘gamification,'” Degroote says. “For us, that’s the trend that is driving the entire industry and fueling all our thinking.”

In an era of unlimited viewing choices and competition from deep-pocketed streamers, it is harder than ever to have big,...

Hulu New Releases: April 2024
Image
Women’s History Month may be over, but that doesn’t mean that women aren’t leading many of Hulu’s top picks for April. The month begins with the premiere of Vanderpump Villa, a Hulu Original reality series that follows Lisa Vanderpump and the hand-selected staff members employed at her lavish French estate, Chateau Rosabelle. This next chapter in the Vanderpump saga is sure to be full of drama, decadence, and debauchery as the staff caters to Vanderpump, her wealthy guests, and their own desires.

Hulu Original Under the Bridge, based on the 1997 true-crime novel of the same name, also premieres this month. This limited series follows the investigation of Reena Virk’s disappearance –the fourteen-year-old left to meet some friends and never returned home. Starring Riley Keough and Academy Award nominee Lily Gladstone, Under the Bridge has all the makings of a true-crime hit. Rounding out this month,...

Everything Coming to Hulu and Disney+ in April 2024
Image
If you haven’t taken the leap to bundle Disney+ and Hulu, it might be time. Streaming is only getting more expensive and competitive, and the enticing bundle (which also includes ESPN) might be a version of cable TV, but it’s also just cost efficient. Disney+ and Hulu are so intertwined that their monthly listing updates come in the same email — and as such, we decided to compile them here for you in the same list.

Whether you have Disney+ or Hulu, or both (and the IndieWire staff has weighed on our favorites), each has its benefits. Disney has the family-friendly titles, the Star Wars and Marvel (new episodes of “The Bad Batch” and “X-Men: 97” continue through April), while Hulu is the place to catch FX originals and network episodes. Both streamers have the rights to distribute National Geographic titles, which are well worth exploring along with the rest of the library.

Everything New On Netflix, Disney Plus, Prime, Hulu And HBO Max This Weekend
Image
The streaming services continue their ceaseless rollout of new content, and several fresh titles are debuting this weekend.

First up, arriving on HBO Max is The King of Staten Island, a semi-autobiographical comedy drama partly inspired by the life of its star, comedian and SNL alum Pete Davidson. A waster high school dropout still living with his mother dreams of becoming a tattoo artist, but is stifled by his medical and mental health issues, which are only compounded when his mom begins dating a new man who’s a firefighter like his deceased father.

Also on HBO Max is season 2 of The Alienist, subtitled Angel of Darkness after the novel on which it’s based, seeing the return of its ad hoc team of investigators, this time looking into the brutal deaths of young children that may be the work of a serial killer, while digging into familiar themes of societal status,...

‘Hunted’ Commissioner Dom Bird Leaves UK Broadcaster Channel 4 After Six Years
Dom Bird, who was responsible for commissioning some of Channel 4’s most recent hits including Hunted and Tattoo Fixers, is set to leave the British broadcaster.

Bird, who is Head of Formats at the broadcaster, is exiting later this summer and is thought to be considering a move into production. He has been at C4 for six years, having joined from the BBC, where he was Creative Director at the company’s entertainment production division, overseeing shows such as Dragon’s Den and Mastermind.

In addition to C4’s Hunted and E4’s Tattoo Fixers, which was one of the youth-skewing broadcasters biggest hits, he ordered the likes of Lego Masters and Celebs Go Dating and oversaw hit reality series Made In Chelsea.

His departure comes after Channel 4 installed former Electric Ray boss Karl Warner as boss of E4.

Bird said: “I feel incredibly privileged to have spent six...
