NBCUniversal-Backed TV Crime Drama ‘Rubber Faced Men’ Tops 2024 Brit List
Image
The 2024 lineup of the Brit List, the U.K.’s Black List-esque platform for unproduced scripts across film and TV, has been revealed, with a 1980s-set crime series from NBCUniversal topping the pile.

Now into its 16th edition, the list is compiled from recommendations by British production companies, talent agencies, sales companies, financiers, distributors and broadcasters. Since 2020, it has featured both film and TV scripts, while this year a minimum of 10 recommendations were needed for inclusion. A total of 13 made it onto the 2024 list.

“It’s been fantastic to see, over the last year, the great success of past Brit List alumni – from Chris Andrews’ recent BIFA nomination, for ‘Bring Them Down’ (which appeared on The Brit List in 2018 as ‘Shepherd’), to last year’s Brit List writer, Karla Marie Sweet’s work with our sponsor, Audible, on her book, ‘Another Life,’ which was released as an Audible Original in September,...

The 8 Bette Davis Movies That Defined Her Career
Image
Even those who have never seen a single Bette Davis film know her name and that her legacy represented movie stardom in its purest form. With eyes so striking there were songs written about them, Davis burst into Hollywood as an uncompromising actress, unafraid to look brash and aggressive in the name of playing compelling, sardonic, and occasionally unlikable characters. With an ability to capture the highs and lows of heartbreak and sorrow while having a nuanced understanding of when to play it big for the cameras and when to pull back, Davis was truly an icon of cinema.

While the best Bette Davis movies rank among the greatest films ever produced, her career also featured plenty of ups and downs as her relationship with stardom was complex and inconsistent. Davis achieved widespread recognition through Oscar-winning roles in the 1930s, had an all-time career high with All About Eve in...

‘Ned’s Declassified’ Stars Say They Were Not Referring to Drake Bell in TikTok Joke: “We F***ed Up”
Image
Ned’s Declassified School Survivor’s Guide stars Devon Werkheiser, Lindsey Shaw and Daniel Curtis Lee took to their podcast to express their regrets after a joke they seemingly made about Drake Bell received backlash earlier this week.

On Tuesday, the Nickelodeon child stars were on a TikTok Live during which they were receiving comments from fans asking what their thoughts were on the Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV docuseries, in which Bell came forward about his child sexual abuse.

While someone commented, asking about the docuseries, Werkheiser made a joke directed at Lee, saying, “Daniel, we told you never to speak about that. Get back in your hole, Daniel, and give me your holes!” Fans took that to mean they were mocking Bell following his claims.

Werkheiser attempted to correct himself in the video, noting, “Sorry, we shouldn’t joke about this. We really shouldn’t.

Bette Davis' First Film With Humphrey Bogart Was A Low Point For Both
Image
When you think of actors like Bette Davis and Humphrey Bogart, you think of their titanic starring roles that came at the peak of their powers. For Davis, it might well be something like the southern melodrama "Jezebel" or 1950's "All About Eve," the movie that revived her career by letting her embrace her age, her pettiness, and her acid tongue. For Bogart, it would be any of his many roles in film noir, a cinematic movement through the '40s and '50s of which he still registers as the face and the voice.

Digging through their respective careers, one can find early roles that show none of what would make the actors legendary. While technically impressive, these performances lack the vitality, electricity, and movie star charisma that both performers would come to master. And in the early '30s, with the industry in tumult and the Great Depression at its most suffocating,...

The Evolution of Humphrey Bogart, Directed by Michael Curtiz
Image
In 1946, when Humphrey Bogart signed an updated contract with Warner Bros., he was able to stipulate a list of directors preferred for future projects. John Huston and Howard Hawks were no surprise—having helmed some of Bogart’s most admired films, they were also good friends with the iconic star—and two more of his chosen directors, John Cromwell and Delmer Daves, were well-regarded for their efficiency and expertise (they each worked with Bogart the very next year). Then there was Michael Curtiz. While he had directed what was perhaps Bogart’s most venerated film, 1942’s Casablanca, in 1946 the director was hardly synonymous with Bogart’s body of work, or his temperament. And yet, it was Curtiz who had engaged Bogart prior to Hawks and Huston, the two directors widely credited with Bogart’s ascent to celebrity; it was Curtiz who was the last of the named directors to work...

Interview: Actress Catherine Delaloye on horror ‘Welcome to Essex’
Welcome to Essex is a new zombie horror film from writer-director Ryan J Fleming which will have its UK premier at The Romford Film Festival on Thursday 24th May. I got a chance to talk to ask lead actress Catherine Delaloye a few questions about; how she first got into acting, what it was like working on the film and her favourite moments during filming.

How did you first get into acting?

I grew up with a very creative mom who used to encourage my siblings and I to put together little family plays. We would write, act and perform on these little productions. So, I guess I’ve been performing in some way for most of my life. I decided I wanted to start acting in films when I was around 15 years old and living in San Diego. I took a couple of acting classes, but nothing really took...
