Both the Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z anime contain plenty of material not present in Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball manga. Often, this filler is derided as being of lesser quality by fans, and easily skippable as a result. While there are certainly filler episodes that have earned the series this reputation, there are others with as much value as any other episode in the "real" Dragon Ball franchise.
Filler may have a bad reputation among anime fans but, for a series like Dragon Ball, it can often elevate the canon material. Toriyama did not have much interest in portraying overt character development, downtime, or training, and the anime goes out of its way to fill in these gaps. The Dragon Ball anime also include entire filler arcs, some of which feature elements that fans longed to see canonized for decades.

If you've ever spent time at a hospital, you know how incredibly hard working and dedicated nurses are. And how essential they are to keeping a hospital functioning while taking care of all of the patients. This Swiss film premiering at the 2025 Berlin Film Festival is a tribute to nurses while also acting as an urgent call to the world to make sure there are enough nurses working to take care of everyone all over the world. Heldin (which translates to Heroine in German) is the latest feature film made by the exceptionally talented Swiss filmmaker Petra Volpe, her third feature film following Dreamland and The Divine Order (another one of my favorites from 2017 - I interviewed Volpe during the release back then). The film is an intimate, intense, riveting thriller following Floria, a dedicated & caring nurse, who works the late shift in the cancer ward at an overcrowded, understaffed hospital in Switzerland.

The 2024 Sffilm Rainin grant recipients have officially been unveiled.
IndieWire can announce that 17 feature films were awarded $425,000 in cash grants, benefitting 22 filmmakers. Two projects have especially buzzy producers: Joie Estrella Horwitz’s “Dreamland” is produced by recent “The Fire Inside” screenwriter and “Mufasa” director Barry Jenkins, while Lucy Liu is producing “Rosemead.”
The Sffilm Rainin grant is the largest granting body for the development and production of independent narrative feature films in the U.S. The flagship partnership with the Kenneth Rainin Foundation specifically supports films that address social justice issues — the distribution of wealth, opportunities, and privileges — in a positive and meaningful way through plot, character, theme, or setting.
Awards are made to multiple projects once a year, for screenwriting, development, and post-production. Recipients receive an unrestricted cash grant of up to $25,000 for screenwriting, development, or post-production, and a two-month residency at FilmHouse, Sffilm’s artist residency space.

Throughout her already prolific career, producer/actor Margot Robbie has proven herself to have a taste that's as discerning as it is eclectic. Most actors attempt to demonstrate their ability to take on as large of a range of projects as possible, yet the demands of the business and marketing sides of the film industry usually see them typecast in some form, usually in a genre if not a specific type of role. This is why Robbie's career is worth pointing out for how diverse it is; she's been able to find a niche for herself that has allowed her to easily move between action films, dramas, period pieces like "Mary Queen Of Scots," comedies, genre flicks, and prestige pics, all while growing her A-list status and not being relegated to either an awards-bait character actor or a paycheck-bait comic book movie star. As a producer, she's demonstrated a steady...

It was Martin Scorsese’s iconic The Wolf of Wall Street that gave Margot Robbie the recognition she deserved, and since then, the Australian actress has only been attracting major roles. Little did she know that starting a life in Hollywood would lead her to settle down and start a family as well.
In 2013, while the Birds of Prey actress basked in success following her big break, it was also the same year she met her eventual husband, Tom Ackerley, on the set of Suite Française, a World War II drama. Their lives would change forever a year later.

‘Bad Sisters’ has received rave reviews, and Apple TV+ subscribers won’t have to go far to find it.
On Wednesday, Oct. 9, “Slow Horses” will wrap up its fourth season on Apple TV+. The show has already been renewed for a fifth, but even so, it will be a while before fans see new episodes after Wednesday’s Season 4 finale. The dry British humor and taught, tense writing of “Slow Horses” make it a must-see for Apple TV+ subscribers, but once you’re finished you may be feeling a little left out in the cold.

The Futurama season 12 finale features a major Easter egg that references the Netflix series Disenchantment, and the connection between the two shows could have universe-altering implications. Matt Groening's three major TV shows, The Simpsons, Futurama, and Disenchantment, constantly reference each other despite the differing time periods, stories, and tones. While this is most commonly seen with Futurama and The Simpsons, Disenchantment has also had some tie-ins with the aforementioned shows, although Disenchantment's appearance in the Futurama season 12 finale is by far the show's biggest connection yet.
Futurama season 12, episode 10, "Otherwise" wraps up the second season of Hulu's Futurama revival, with it finally delving into a major sci-fi concept that has been teased for decades now: the multiverse. Although the multiverse has made appearances in previous Futurama episodes, "Otherwise" is the first one to fully explore it, with it following the Planet Express crew as they interact with a multiversal sea.

The following contains spoilers for Futurama season 12 episode 10, "Otherwise," now streaming on HuluFuturama's latest reference to Disenchantment quietly debunks a popular fan theory about the two shows. Both created by Matt Groening, Futurama and Disenchantment share a goofy tone but are set in radically different worlds where sci-fi and magic are common place. Futurama season 12 has been expanding the scope of the series. Episodes have revealed more about the backstories of its characters while bringing back supporting characters from early seasons of Futurama.
The season finale, "Otherwise," even expands the sci-fi scope of the universe by formally introducing the multiverse and sending the show's main characters directly through it. The fall market and festival season is traditionally a thrilling time for the French animation sector as companies prepare to unveil new projects, partnerships, and distribution deals at events such as the Unifrance Rendez-Vous, Cartoon Forum, Mipcom and MipJunior.
This year, however, French animation finds itself in a precarious spot, having been hard hit by a recent contraction among international distribution platforms that had, for several years now – especially during and post-pandemic, been investing heavily in the region.
Despite holding its spot as France’s No. 2 screen industry export medium, with a 25.2% market share, animation had a rough 2023. Foreign sales fell 11.2% to €51.2 million ($56.3 million), according to a Cnc report unveiled at the Unifrance Rendez-Vous on Tuesday. The overwhelming bulk of that drop can be attributed to American investors, who cut back by 69.7% to €4.3 million ($4.7 million). The rest of the world saw a less steep drop of just 6.6% to €12.9 million ($14.2 million), still significant.

“Elizabethtown. ““Dean.” “August: Osage County.” All somewhat recent cinematic efforts of the past several decades revolving around a person or two dealing with the passing of a family member, more often than not, accompanied by a return to their childhood home or small town that will itself become far more inevitably meaningful by film’s end. Directed by renaissance man Robert Schwartzman, having helmed such efforts as “Dreamland,” “The Unicorn,” and “The Argument” in addition to fronting indie group Rooney and appearing onscreen as the dreamboat love interest in “The Princess Diaries,” there’s a smattering of ambition present throughout his latest project “The Good Half, “one that can easily find itself in line with the contemporaries above but can’t help but repeatedly trip over its storytelling shoelaces in the process.

Post-2005 Doctor Who main TV-show companions. That’s the first qualifier to add to the following list. For now at least, we’re celebrating only the Nu-Who main companions who had their own proper stint travelling in the Tardis, or any of the many wonderful actors who preceded them in the classic era.

Flush with new cash thanks to The Walt Disney Company, Doctor Who is getting another spinoff.

Allen announced the page via an Instagram Story post on Tuesday (July 2nd) showing off a preview of the content. “La dolce feeta,” she wrote, linking to the OnlyFans account.
As pointed out by Billboard, the move comes just two weeks after Allen discussed her unusually beloved feet on her Miss Me? podcast. “I have a lady that comes and does my nails,” she told her co-host. “They informed me that I have five stars on WikiFeet, which is quite rare. My feet are rated quite highly on the internet.

“Oh, shit!” Dave Bayley exclaims. His blue eyes are wide as he holds his head with both hands. The Glass Animals frontman has just heard some great news from his publicist, who confirms that the U.K. band’s hit song, “Heat Waves,” is officially RIAA diamond certified, representing 10 million sales and streaming units. Bayley blinks rapidly and sputters in disbelief, trying to think of what to say next in his Zoom with Rolling Stone. “I don’t quite know what to make of it!” he adds.

“You blew me to stardust,” Glass Animals lead singer Dave Bayley sings on the U.K. band’s latest single “Tear in Space (Airlock).” The tantalizing track swirls with synths over a pulsating beat as Bayley’s falsetto compares an all-consuming love to being trapped in the pressurized, in-between area of a space shuttle. Trippy shit, right?
“Tear in Space (Airlock)” is the newest single from the band’s fourth studio album, I Love You So F***ing Much, out July 19. To accompany the track, Glass Animals also shared a...

Look around and you just may find yourself amid a Pet Shop Boys renaissance.
Of course, the English duo — consisting of Neil Tennant, 69, and Chris Lowe, 64 — never went anywhere. They have been steadily putting out music since their landmark 1984 debut, Please, which instantly established them with timeless songs like “West End Girls” and “Opportunities (Let’s Make Lots of Money).”
But Pet Shop Boys’ deep catalog has been plundered in recent years everywhere from Madison Avenue (“Opportunities” showed up in a Super Bowl ad for Allstate) to Hollywood (several classics were used to wonderful effect in two of last year’s zeitgeistiest movies, Saltburn and All of Us Strangers). Their signature sound is suddenly everywhere — wistful and longing, danceable and intellectually sophisticated synth-pop. Their 15th studio effort, Nonetheless, drops tomorrow and features more of that infectious trademark music.

English quartet Glass Animals are back to announce their fourth album, I Love You So F***ing Much, and shared the LP’s lead single, “Creatures in Heaven.” Update: Glass Animals have announced a 2024 world tour.
Due out July 19th, I Love You So F***ing Much is Glass Animals’ follow up to 2020’s Dreamland, which gave the band their first #1 hit in the US with “Heat Waves.” The new album, then, was born from the chaos of supporting a record during the pandemic and finding newfound success within the band. Frontman Dave Bayley claims that I Love You So F***ing Much came from an existential crisis: “Life can change dramatically, but sometimes you aren’t able to change as quickly on a personal level,” Bayley writes in a statement. “You end up feeling like a spectator. And then you are asked and expected to be a certain type of person,...

The BBC have unveiled a new slate of star-studded dramas including the TV adaptation of James Graham’s football play “Dear England” starring Joseph Fiennes, a new co-pro with “Euphoria” producer A24 and the screenwriting debut from “Sex Education” star Aimee Lou Wood.
Director of BBC Drama Lindsay Salt revealed the 12-strong slate – which adds up to 66 hours of top TV – at a press event in London, U.K. on Wednesday evening. It includes two more series of Belfast-based police drama “Blue Lights.”
“Inflation, content and platform saturation, streamer retrenchment, the writers’ strike… It’s all fed a serious slowdown,” Salt said as she unveiled the diverse slate. “Five years ago, everyone was willing to make brave choices, to experiment, to try something a little unorthodox. Exclusive: Tony winner Adrienne Warren is set to star in and executive produce Dreamland, a period drama series in development at Peacock from Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment and Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group.
Written and executive produced by Eric Haywood (Law & Order: Organized Crime), Dreamland explores the world of Black Wall Street, the legendary African-American business district in Tulsa, Oklahoma’s segregated Greenwood community. Set in 1915, the series avoids depicting the well-known deadly massacre that took place several years later. Instead, it explores the daily lives, interpersonal relationships, and class struggles of Greenwood’s residents — all taking place in the shadow of an oil boom that ignited long-standing tensions between the city’s white, African-American, and displaced Native American populations.

In a world that has gifted Greta Gerwig the possibility to focus all her creative skills and talents on Barbie, the film becomes the pink dream we all hoped it would be. After months and months of their marketing campaign, which often felt like seeing a sea of pink slowly wash towards us, the creators behind Barbie were right to put everything they had into getting people into the theatres to see this on the big screen. Not only does Barbie reach something on a creative and entertaining level, but it touches deeper and lingers on the mind longer than any movie about a doll has the right to.

Tom Ackerley has a knack for producing projects with dynamic and strong female characters, often working with his wife Margot Robbie, resulting in critical and financial successes. While some projects like Terminal and Dreamland fell short in terms of script and cinematic quality, others like Promising Young Woman and I, Tonya received critical acclaim and award nominations. Ackerley's latest project, Barbie, directed by Greta Gerwig, became a cultural phenomenon and broke box office records, delivering an entertaining film with a powerful message about sexism and the patriarchy.

The Simpsons and Futurama crossover episode establishes that both series exist within the same universe. Disenchantment also linked Bean's world and the one depicted within Futurama because of Professor Farnsworth and his time machine. Because of the connections between Futurama, The Simpsons and Disenchantment, the three series can be viewed as a working trilogy that examines and theorizes on the history of humanity.
Regarding cherished animated series, Matt Groening seems to have his fingers on the pulse concerning what audiences want to watch. After all, the cartoonist and animator has three distinct shows -- The Simpsons, Futurama and Disenchantment -- which have all done well over the years despite their ups and downs. Nevertheless, fans have always viewed each sitcom as a standalone piece regardless of crossovers or Easter eggs, which shouldn't be the case. Disenchantment is one of the better adult cartoon series available, but there are 10 similar shows to enjoy after finishing the show. Disenchantment, created by The Simpsons and Futurama's Matt Groening, has received widespread acclaim since its 2018 debut on Netflix. The series, which takes place in a medieval fantasy setting called Dreamland, is full of Groening's trademark wit and creative plot lines. Despite the show's success, its fifth season has officially been confirmed as the end of the series.
Luckily, there are plenty of other animated fantasy series for fans to sink their teeth into after finishing Disenchantment. Though Disenchantment's witty, satirical side is difficult to find in other entries in the fantasy genre, there are plenty of fantasy shows that contain some level of humor alongside their classic fantasy elements. There are also some animated fantasy series that may not contain much humor but are fantastic watches for any fan of fantasy cartoons.

Disenchantment season 4 ended with unanswered questions about Dagmar's plan and goals, leaving viewers eager for more answers in season 5. Freckles, the puppet character, may be secretly Yøg seeking revenge on King Zøg, hinted at by their similar appearance and shared voice actor. The show introduced intriguing plotlines surrounding Satan, including the debt Dagmar owes him and the mystery behind his changing appearance in mirrors, which will likely be explored in later seasons.
Matt Groening's Disenchantment season 4 recap ended with more questions than it did answers. There were several big subplots that got some form of resolution, answering some questions. However, the show's fifth season finale was consistent with its previous installments in the fact that it split up the main cast in various cliffhangers, and in the case of Queen Bean, literally tossed off of a cliff. The following contains spoilers for Disenchantment, now streaming on Netflix.
The fifth and final season of the animated fantasy series Disenchantment, created by the mind behind the Simpsons, was released on Netflix, marking the culmination of Queen Bean's and her friends Elfo and Luci's misadventures. This concluding season unfolds with an epic final battle, requiring Bean's confrontation with her mother, Queen Dagmar, who has taken over Dreamland. However, even though this trio of misfits has been the show's central focus, one character is finally getting the recognition she deserves: Mop Girl.
Disenchantment is just one of the projects that Matt Groening has co-created alongside David X. Cohen, which includes Futurama. Therefore, it isn't surprising that the two shows now seem to coexist in the same universe.
The latest season presents many challenges for Bean and her crew, which also involves Bean's departure for Steamland with her mermaid girlfriend, Mora,...

FX’s final season of Archer is bringing back high-adventure set pieces, international intrigue, and bawdy workplace comedy shenanigans for one last ride — and it’s easier than ever to watch Archer season 14 online.
Created by Adam Reed, the title namesake self-absorbed Sterling Archer (voiced by H. Jon Benjamin of Bob’s Burgers) and his fellow agents at the former International Secret Intelligence Service (Isis), now just “The Agency”, have been pushing the envelope of adult animated comedy since 2009. After a few “coma-seasons” of delightful departures (including the 1940s Dreamland, Archer...

Disenchantment season 5 serves as a satisfying conclusion to the story, with major storylines wrapped up and loose ends tied. The series was not canceled by Netflix; it was ordered and written as the show's final season, allowing the creators to end it on their own terms. Disenchantment ending at the same time as other major Netflix adult animated series may indicate a shift in the streaming platform's content plan, possibly producing fewer shows in this category.
Netflix's animated fantasy series Disenchantment has taken its final bow with season 5, wrapping its major storylines and raising questions about why it's not getting a season 6. Disenchantment premiered back in 2018, introducing the wayward Princess Bean and her eccentric but lovable companions. Animated in the same style as hits like The Simpsons and Futurama — and brought to life by both shows' creator, Matt Groening, and producer, Josh Weinstein — Disenchantment follows Bean on a journey to...

The following contains spoilers for Futurama Season 8, Episode 6, "I Know What You Did Next XMas," now streaming on Hulu.
Futurama has played with the apocalypse on multiple occasions. Thanks to its distant future setting, the show has hinted at multiple ways humanity could collapse and rebuild itself. The latest hint at this cyclical existence goes a step further and quietly cements another show as part of Futurama's lore.
"I Know What You Did Next XMas" -- Written by Ariel Ladensohn and Directed by Crystal Chesney-Thompson -- features a clever reference to one of Matt Groening's other animated properties, Netflix's Disenchantment. Notably, this direct reference suggests that the fantasy comedy is actually set in the distant future of Futurama's world. On top of seemingly confirming the shared universe between the two shows, it follows up a reoccurring element of Futurama's timeline.

“One of the mandates from [manga creator] Eiichiro Oda was against romance on the crew,” co-showrunner Steven Maeda tells TVLine. “That is a hard no, as far as the manga and the live-action show are concerned.”
