Emmy-winning and Grammy-nominated filmmaker Jake Scott has signed with Range Media Partners.

Scott is a founder of music video and creative production company Black Dog Films, and is a director at the Ridley Scott Creative Group and Rsa Films. He is currently casting his next film First Ascent, which Scott Free and Sukee Chew are producing based on a script written by Colin Bannon and Mark Bomback.

Exclusive: Kwame Patterson is set to play the title role and Arlen Escarpeta (The Oath) also is set as a series regular in the second season of OWN’s acclaimed Peabody-winning drama series David Makes Man. The Oscar nominations for the 92nd Academy Awards were announced live on Monday by “Star Trek” actor John Cho and “Insecure” star Issa Rae.

The Academy this year produced nine nominees for Best Picture, those being “Ford v. Ferrari,” “The Irishman,” “Jojo Rabbit,” “Joker,” “Little Women,” “Marriage Story,” “1917,” “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood” and “Parasite.”

“Joker” led all films with 11 nominations, including for Best Actor Joaquin Phoenix and Best Director Todd Phillips. It was followed by “The Irishman,” “1917” and “Once Upon a Time…in Hollywoood.”

This year’s Oscars ceremony, which takes place the earliest ever in awards season, is on Sunday, Feb. 9. And for the second year in a row, the ceremony will have no host.

Oscar nominations for the 92nd annual Academy Awards were announced Monday morning from the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, Calif.

Martin Scorsese’s mob epic “The Irishman,” Quentin Tarantino’s ode to Los Angeles “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” and Noah Baumbach’s drama “Marriage Story” are expected to sweep nominations. Renee Zellweger is favored to land her fourth Oscar nod, this time for her turn as Judy Garland in the biopic “Judy.” Meanwhile, Joaquin Phoenix (“Joker”) and Adam Driver (“Marriage Story”) are the odds-on favorites among lead actors.

Other films that are anticipating recognition from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences include Sam Mendes’ WWI film “1917,” Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of “Little Women” and Bong Joon Ho’s social thriller “Parasite.

The Academy Awards will air live Feb. 6 on ABC.

Awards season has come early in 2020, thank goodness. As the 92nd Academy Awards is scheduled to air earlier than any of its predecessors at the beginning of February, the Oscar nominations arrived Fast and early this morning.

From surprises that include Todd Phillips getting a Best Director nomination for Joker, and Greta Gerwig and all other women being shut out of that category, and Jennifer Lopez being snubbed for Hustlers while Kathy Bates surprises in the Best Supporitng Actress category, below is the complete list of Osar nominees. Exclusive: UK genre sales firm Devilworks has added five titles to its Afm slate including FrightFest duo Criminal Audition and Are We Dead Yet?

Devilworks has world rights to the latter, a UK supernatural horror about a robbery that goes wrong leading to five young criminals having to take refuge from the police in an old castle. The movie was written and directed by Fredi Nwaka (Brotherhood) who co-stars alongside Tim Faraday, Jessica-Jane Stafford, Fabrizio Santino, Winston Ellis and UK rapper Stephen Manderson, aka Professor Green.

Fellow FrightFest title Criminal Audition is a thriller directed by Samuel Gridley, who co-wrote the script with Luke Kaile. Pic follows an ex-lawyer and his team who run a service providing fake criminals who take on other people’s crimes. Cast includes Noeleen Comiskey, Angela Peters, Rich Keeble, Scott Samain and Rebecca Calienda. Producers include Nathaniel Francis and Luke Mordue of Mordue Pictures and Luke Kaile and Samuel Gridley.

Jason Clarke is suiting up for the HBO drama pilot “Showtime.”

The one-hour series focuses on the professional and personal lives of the 1980s Los Angeles Lakers. Clarke has been cast as Jerry West.

West first joined the Lakers as a player in 1960, being named an All-Star in all of his 14 seasons with the team before retiring in 1974. He was then named head coach in 1976, a position he held for three seasons. He went on to become a scout and then general manager in 1982.

Clarke’s West is described as the cantankerous tortured genius of basketball. West ought to be the perfect man to build the Lakers into a dynasty, if only he can get past his own worst enemy: Jerry West.

Rob Brydon has squeezed into those budgie smugglers he has tucked at the back of his drawers to start filming on the upcoming British comedy Swimming with Men alongside a pretty decent cast which includes Charlotte Riley ad Daniel Mays.

The production which is underway today in pools across London, Hertfordshire and Essex, is said to be a heart-warming comedy about a man in the throes of a mid-life crisis who finds meaning in the most unlikely of places: an all-male, middle-aged, amateur synchronised swimming team.

At the heart of the story is Eric, a 40-something stuck in a rut. With his marriage in tatters and his life generally going to pieces, Eric finds unexpected refuge in the company of a motley crew of middle-aged, slightly saggy men, who meet up once a week at the local municipal pool literally and figuratively to tread water together.

Star Wars is not a British movie, says Lionsgate UK boss, who is concerned about Brexit impact and blockbuster saturation.

The British independent film sector needs more help from public and private investors, Lionsgate UK & Europe CEO Zygi Kamasa has said in an interview today [Mar 24].

Speaking on BBC radio, the La La Land distributor, known for backing successful UK films including Saoirse Ronan drama Brooklyn and Noel Clarke’s Brotherhood, renewed calls first made to Screen for adjustments to the UK tax credit and cinema ticket prices to favour British films.

“There are ways the government can look at improving and enhancing investment in British productions,” he said.

“I’m not sure the one size fits all tax credit is the best system. Culturally it is very important that British independent films are helped in a greater way. That extra revenue [from a revised tax credit] could help it.”

Currently in post-production, the film follows the lead singer of a 90s Britpop band whose star has fallen considerably since her glory days.

When on a drunken night out she accidentally enrolls at a university she is shocked to discover that her fellow students have no idea who she is and are far more into yoga and kale smoothies than wild parties.

Daniel O’Reilly, aka controversial comedy character Dapper Laughs, has wrapped shooting on his debut feature film as an actor, the vampire comedy Fanged Up.

Directed by Christian James (Stalled), the film’s cast also features Steven Berkoff (The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo), Lauren Socha (E4 series Misfits), Danielle Harold (Eastenders), former WWE wrestler Stu Bennett, and Joe Egan (Sherlock Holmes).

The film was shot entirely on location in Portsmouth. It follows a young rogue (O’Reilly) who is thrown into prison for the weekened, unaware that the guards are blood-sucking vampires and the inmates are their victims.

It follows former Hollywood siren Helen (Joan Collins) who, determined to gate-crash her ex-lover’s funeral, escapes her London retirement home with the help of repressed English housewife Priscilla (Pauline Collins). Toronto crime drama will screen to potential buyers at Afm following £3.7m UK run.

UK outfit Independent Film Sales has boarded Noel Clarke’s UK box office success Brotherhood for international sales

The Toronto title will screen to buyers during the American Film Market.

Brotherhood is the third film in multi-hyphenate Clarke’s urban crime series which began with 2006 title Kidulthood.

The movie, about a former gang member struggling to adapt to a new way of life, has grossed £3.7m in the UK following its late August release.

Clarke, the most prolific black actor in UK film, wrote, stars in and directed the movie. Under his Unstoppable Entertainment banner he produced the feature alongside Jason Maza and Gina Powell. Also producing were Maggie Monteith’s Dignity Films Finance.

Executive producers are Damian Jones, Zygi Kamasa, Nick Manzi, Nicola Pearcey, Chris Reed and Josephine Rose.

There's a scene early on in Brotherhood, the concluding chapter in Noel Clarke's British Hood trilogy, in which his Sam Peel checks himself out in a changing room mirror after a rigorous gym session. He ends up sadly patting his emerging belly and you realise that whatever his original intentions for this series, Sam has become his Rocky Balboa.

Tributes have been paid to the Brotherhood actor Aaron Eaton, who has died days after the film’s release.

The 29-year-old played the character Teardrop in the third instalment of actor-turned-director Noel Clarke’s trilogy of films about gang life in London.

From Doctor Who’s Mickey to a one-man film industry, and Brotherhood. So why doesn’t Noel Clarke get more respect?

Over the past weekend, the final part of Noel Clarke’s The Hood trilogy of movies, Brotherhood, hit big in the UK. The movie has earned £1.98m in its first seven days on release, on just 220 screens. It did so in spite of Clarke at one stage struggling to raise the finance for the film (only two companies ended up putting in tangible offers), and also in spite of it being eight years since the release of its predecessor, Adulthood.

In a summer of box office disappointments, Brotherhood has offered a very welcome contrast.

We're putting on a special screening of Brotherhood in London this Thursday - and Noel Clarke will be doing a Q&A in person!

Now playing in cinemas across the UK is the final part of Noel Clarke's The Hood trilogy, Brotherhood. The new film is written and directed by Clarke, who also co-stars, and the synopsis for the film reads thus:

BrOTHERHOOD follows Sam as he faces up to the new world after Adulthood and realizes it also comes with new problems and new challenges. Sam knows that to survive he must face his issues head on, and knows he will require old friends to help him survive new dangers. With its dramatic cliches and terrible acting, Noel Clarke’s ‘hood’ franchise is now utterly exhausted

Ten years ago, writer-star Noel Clarke delivered a blast of energy with Kidulthood, his west London urban crime-drama – it almost invented the genre in the eyes of many. He came back for more with Adulthood two years later. Now with this third film Brotherhood, the franchise is utterly exhausted. It’s a lame collection of cliches, clunkily unconvincing plot transitions, and frankly terrible acting.

The first film had something to say about the infantile nature of crime and the obsession with respect. But now the macho immaturity looks wrong: it’s a silly gangster-porn version of kids’ TV.

After Kidulthood and Adulthood, Noel Clarke ends his crime saga with Brotherhood, in which west London ex-con Sam (Clarke) attempts to breakaway from his criminal life, despite the attentions of rival gangsters bearing a grudge. In this clip, Sam is ridiculed by kids for being out of touch with the world in which he grew up. With news about Toronto International Film Festival’s rather exciting 2016 line-up breaking today, a collection of trailers have also been released for a handful of the selections. The first is Feng Ziaogang‘s I Am Not Madame Bovary, which largely features beautiful paintings before moving into even more gorgeous imagery in a peculiar circular aspect ratio.

There’s also the striking (and lengthy, potentially spoiler-filled) trailer for A Death in the Gunj, the directorial debut of Indian actress Konkona Sen Sharma. She looks to have a very strong grasp of a visual vocabulary, probably due to the 40-plus films she’s worked on in an acting capacity.

Lastly, there’s the first trailer, and new images, for Noel Clarke‘s British crime drama BrOTHERHOOD, which caps the trilogy that also includes KiDULTHOOD and AdULTHOOD. See all the trailers below, along with our coverage of Tiff here as it comes in.

The Toronto International Film Festival — aka Tiff — has announced its first round of picks for this year’s festival, including Galas and Special Presentations, along with the festival’s opening night selection, Antoine Fuqua’s “The Magnificent Seven,” and their closing night pick, Kelly Fremon Craig’s feature directorial debut “The Edge of Seventeen.” Filled with early awards contenders, returning filmmakers and favorites from other festivals from around the globe, it’s a meaty selection of offerings that firmly announces the imminent arrival of the cinematic bonanza otherwise known as the fall festival season.

This August, Noel Clarke completes the trilogy that he started with Kidulthood and continued with Adulthood.

Kidulthood director Noel Clarke, who has spoken to cinemas about a ‘British Film Friday’, will discuss the UK film sector at the forthcoming Media Production Show in June.

BAFTA-winning actor-director Noel Clarke (Kidulthood, Adulthood) has highlighted growing distribution challenges for independent films.

Speaking to Screen, Clarke, who has run UK production outfit Unstoppable Entertainment for nine years, said that over the last decade “it has become harder to find distribution, particularly to get seen in cinemas”.

The Star Trek Into Darkness actor also added that from a production viewpoint “it has become a lot harder to get things over the line” and that there is now “more of an emphasis to make films more commercial”, saying “you have to have the faces” to get backing.

To help a UK indie film get seen, particularly in cinemas, Clarke suggested that a bespoke promotion could be run to support independent films in the vein of 2-for-1 cinema ticket initiative...

Filming has started today on the BBC Three Doctor Who spin-off series Class, a Ya series set in contemporary London, which will shine a light on a whole new corner of the 'Whoniverse'.

Set in Coal Hill School, the series follows four sixth form students at the school who are facing their own fears, secrets and desires as well as navigating a life of friends, parents, school work, sex, sorrow - and possibly the end of existence.

Shoot is underway in London on writer-director Noel Clarke drama Brotherhood, the third film in the urban trilogy that includes Kidulthood (2006) and Adulthood (2008).

Clarke (Star Trek Into Darkness) will star alongside Adulthood collaborators Arnold Oceng (The Good Lie), Ashley Thomas (Cockneys Vs Zombies) and Red Madrell (We Still Kill The Old Way).

Jason Maza (The Hooligan Factory), Olivia Chenery (Legacy) and grime artist Stormzy – making his feature debut – also star.

The five-week shoot began Nov 23 in west London.

Unstoppable Entertainment and Maggie Monteith’s Carpalla Films produce the drama from BAFTA-winner Clarke, who has written the screenplay and will also direct.

Clarke will reprise his role as protagonist Sam in the continuation of the trilogy while Stormzy will portray new character Yardz. Further plot details are being kept under wraps.

Lionsgate is set to release in the UK in 2016.
