Yellow Veil Releases The Midnight Swim with Gorgeous Poster & Great Features
Image
If there is a Sarah Adina Smith fan club out there, I want to be a member. Her debut feature, The Midnight Swim, is a work of creeping strangeness, tenderness, sorrow, and fear. Her sophomore film, Buster's Mal Heart, starring a pre-Oscar™ Rami Malik, is even more strange and disturbing, in the best way possible. We announced last month that Yellow Veil had acquired The Midnight Swim for home and VOD release. The Midnight Swim is both an outlier as found footage horror (being focused more on home movie as the siblings mourn their lost mother) and a cabin-in-the-woods horror (the monster is definitely not what it seems). It is a film that I often return to, perfect for a rainy afternoon when the world...

‘Birds of Paradise’ Review: Amazon’s YA Take on ‘Black Swan’ Turns Kristine Froseth Into a Star
Image
It would be easy — and not especially inaccurate — to dismiss “Birds of Paradise” as a YA riff on “Black Swan,” but . Besides, the movie owes just as much to Luca Guadagnino’s recent “Suspiria” remake — if not for its supernatural menace, then at least for its witchy mood. Directed by Sarah Adina Smith (“Buster’s Mal Heart”), she brings texture to a conventional story about ultra-competitive teenage girls, turning it into something more like a crucible for the survival of their very souls.

Okay, so most YA adaptations are super derivative, but at least this one has style. And a real sense of danger. And Jacqueline Bisset as a French dance instructor who refers to her students as “rats,” and lets them call her “le Diable” in return.

“Birds of Paradise” begins as a fish-out-of-water story when a cash-strapped Virginia teen named Kate (“Booksmart” breakout Diana Silvers) tiptoes into an elite...

SXSW 2019: Watch Girl On The Third Floor Teaser
If you're going to be in Austin for SXSW, you're going to have an amazing time, because this year's program --- the Midnighters in particular --- looks awesome.  One of the films playing --- Girl on the Third Floor --- is the directing debut of prolific producer and ScreenAnarchy friend Travis Stevens, founder of Snowfort Pictures. He's produced a wealth of insane films that you've probably seen or at least heard of, including Starry Eyes, Cheap Thrills, Buster's Mal Heart, Teenage Cocktail, We Are Still Here, and 68 Kill.  Now, it's time for Stevens to slip into the director's chair with the tale of a man who's sprucing up a rundown mansion for his family --- only it appears that the house has other plans (as they sometimes do). Girl on the Third Floor stars WWE...

The Housemaid Could Have Used More Venom: A Film Review
*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by the film's United Kingdom distributor, Eureka Entertainment. Director/writer: Derek Nguyen. Cast: Kate Nhung, Jean-Michel Richaud, Kim Xuan, Rosie Fellner, Kien An and Svitlana Kovalenko. The Housemaid aka Cô Haû Gaí is another cross-cultural film. From director Derek Nguyen (Buster's Mal Heart), this film was shot in Vietnam. It hosts both English and Vietnamese languages as an orphan girl searches for her path. Very slowly paced, The Housemaid is not essentially a horror film as Linh (Kate Nhung) ingratiates herself on a French plantation. The Housemaid is a blend of genres. And, the use of so many genres here upsets the film's tone. It is from period piece, to drama, to romance and into the horror realm. The film bounces all over the place. Only foreign film fans or fans of Asian cinema will enjoy this outing. To get...

Buster's Mal Heart Review: A Dark And Surreal Psychological Journey
Each of us possesses a breaking point, an invisible threshold or limit to the amount of pain or anger or stress we can endure. No one really knows how they'll respond upon piercing this barrier until the moment it occurs. It's a line that no one should willingly cross, because how we act under such tremendous duress could cost our freedom, our sanity, or even our life -- or the life of another. For most people, the challenge of reaching their personal breaking point is recognizing the signs and avoiding the triggers. Unfortunately, sometimes life just deals you a series of slow, repeated blows that compounds until you're pushed over the edge (probably before you even realize it's happened).

Buster's Mal Heart, written and directed by Sarah Adina Smith, is a strange, independent film that's invested in exploring one man's breaking point. It's a psychological examination conducted from multiple angles: before,...

Interview: Writer/Director Sarah Adina Smith on Buster’S Mal Heart
For her latest film, Buster’s Mal Heart, filmmaker Sarah Smith infuses an existential thriller with a bit of dark humor and then throws an intriguing mystery into the mix for good measure. Starring Rami Malek (Mr. Robot), DJ Qualls (Z Nation, The Man in the High Castle), Kate Lyn Sheil (You’re Next, The Sacrament), and genre favorite Lin Shaye, Buster’s Mal Heart is quite simply one of the most thought-provoking films I’ve seen so far in 2017, and I implore anyone looking for a cinematic story that isn’t afraid to be both bold and audacious to check out the latest from Smith, which is currently playing in both New York and Los Angeles courtesy of Well Go USA.

Daily Dead recently had the chance to speak with Smith about the project, and she discussed her creative process and approach to the unorthodox story of Buster’s Mal Heart,...

Janet McTeer, Alia Shawkat, and Rhys Wakefield in Paint It Black (2016)
‘Paint It Black’ Clip: Alia Shawkat Gets Her Heart Broken in Amber Tamblyn’s Gutsy Directorial Debut — Watch
Janet McTeer, Alia Shawkat, and Rhys Wakefield in Paint It Black (2016)
First-time feature director Amber Tamblyn sparked to Janet Fitch’s big, bruising novel “Paint It Black” the very first time she read it. “I just had this very instantaneous, cinematic, visceral reaction to the language of the book. I really felt like, ‘Wow. Wouldn’t that make for a great movie, just about the tormented, grief-ridden, inside, interior minds of women?’” Tamblyn told us last year.

Read More: How Amber Tamblyn Stopped Asking For Permission From Men to Make Her Directorial Debut ‘Paint It Black’

But that didn’t mean she was ready to turn it into a film, much less her feature directorial debut. She sat on it for awhile, she sat with it. And when she was finally ready to take it the screen (first just as a screenwriter, much, much later as a director), she had an even harder road ahead of her. Fitch, who had been...

‘The Dinner’ Clip: Even Laura Linney Can’t Get Steve Coogan Interested In a Big Night Out in Oren Moverman’s Thriller — Watch
Richard Gere, Laura Linney, Steve Coogan, and Rebecca Hall in The Dinner (2017)
Based on Herman Koch’s international bestselling novel, Oren Moverman’s latest feature, “The Dinner,” is a twisted psychological thriller that unspools during the course of one particularly memorable meal. Packing an all-star cast, including Richard Gere, Laura Linney and Steve Coogan, the Berlin premiere is heavy on the talent — and the seriously screwed up family secrets. Bon appetit!

Centered around the fraught relationship between a pair of mismatched brothers — Gere as popular congressman Stan and Coogan as his seemingly troubled younger brother Paul — the film picks up once the long-estranged pair are forced together for a meal at a very fancy restaurant. Turns out, while Stan and Paul haven’t been close in years, their teen sons are tight, and the cousins have very recently committed a heinous crime together.

Fate of the Furious Wins 3rd Weekend at the Box Office with $18.3M
Tom Hanks and Emma Watson in The Circle (2017)
This weekend marked the final box office frame of the spring movie season, with Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 kicking off the summer movie season next weekend. While the first weekend in May traditionally marks the start of summer at the box office, the last weekend in April is generally a quiet run at theaters, and that tradition didn't change this year. Four newcomers hit theaters this past Friday, but none could come close to dethroning The Fate of the Furious, which took the top spot for a third weekend in a row with $18.3 million. Which will likely be its last frame at the top. Surprising newcomers Baahubali: The Conclusion and How to Be a Latin Lover both over-performed, while The Circle and Sleight underperformed.

Box Office Mojo reports that How To Be a Latin Lover took second place with an impressive $12 million, despite opening in just 1,118 theaters,...

Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Ludacris, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, and Nathalie Emmanuel in Fast & Furious 8 (2017)
While it's no small feat that The Fate of the Furious finished atop the box office for a third weekend in a row while crossing $1 billion worldwide, Pantelion's How to be a Latin Lover and Great India Films' Baahubali 2: The Conclusion are stealing some of the spotlight as the two films finished in second and third place at the domestic box office, despite the fact the two films played in just over 1,500 theaters combined. Additionally, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 got off to a healthy start overseas, one week ahead of its domestic debut. With an estimated $19.3 million, Fate of the Furious sees its domestic cume grow to $192.7 million, earning a third weekend atop the domestic box office. Of course, the bigger story is the film became Universal's fifth title to top $1 billion worldwide, joining the ranks of Jurassic World ($1.67 billion), Furious 7 ($1.52 billion), Minions ($1.16 billion) and Jurassic Park...

Sarah Adina Smith is a fucking brilliant madwoman. It hurt my brain talking with her. Honest to goodness, I am not being hyperbolic. She is so effortlessly purposeful and creative in her casual discussion of philosophy that it made me wish I was smarter...

Tom Hanks and Emma Watson in The Circle (2017)
Can The Circle Stop Fate of the Furious at the Box Office?
Tom Hanks and Emma Watson in The Circle (2017)
Even while facing a steep second-weekend decrease of 61.1%, The Fate of the Furious still managed to come away with an easy win, taking in $38.4 million against five new releases, two of which didn't even crack the top 10. This weekend it will only face one newcomer in a true wide release, Stx Entertainment's The Circle, with Pantelion's latest comedy How to Be a Latin Lover and Blumhouse Tilt's Sleight also opening in several national markets, but with a much lower theater count. While Fast 8 will likely suffer another sizable drop in its third frame, it should come out on top with a projected take of $18.2 million.

Last weekend, Fate of the Furious actually added 19 more theaters for a grand total of 4,329, which was still nearly twice the rollout of most of last weekend's newcomers. This weekend, Box Office Mojo reports that The Circle will arrive in more than 2,800 theaters, while How to Be a Latin Lover...

Charlie Hunnam in The Lost City of Z (2016)
Fate of the Furious Wins Second Lap at the Box Office with $38.6M
Charlie Hunnam in The Lost City of Z (2016)
After setting a worldwide box office record, Universal's blockbuster The Fate of the Furious was expected to suffer a rather big second weekend drop, but still come out on top. Both predictions did in fact come true, with this high-octane blockbuster dropping a whopping 60.8%. But it still came out on top with an estimated $38.6 million. While there were five new movies arriving in theaters, two didn't even crack the top 10, and the rest barely managed to underperform.

Box Office Mojo reports that Fate of the Furious even added 19 theaters this weekend for a total theater count of 4,329, earning a decent $8,936 per-screen average. This weekend's tally brings its total up to $163.5 million domestic and a whopping $744.8 million international for a worldwide tally of $908.3 million. It's possible that it could break Star Wars: The Force Awakens' record of the fastest movie to reach $1 billion, with the Disney blockbuster taking just 12 days to accomplish that feat.

Brie Larson, Cillian Murphy, Sharlto Copley, Armie Hammer, and Jack Reynor in Free Fire (2016)
Can Fate of the Furious Continue Its Box Office Winning Streak?
Brie Larson, Cillian Murphy, Sharlto Copley, Armie Hammer, and Jack Reynor in Free Fire (2016)
As expected, Universal's The Fate of the Furious debuted in grand fashion last weekend, setting a new box office record for a global opening weekend of $531.9 million, although its $98.7 million domestic debut was far from any sort of record. Over the past few years, the Fast & Furious franchise has established its dominance in the month of April, typically posting huge debuts and repeating atop the box office charts for several weeks in a row, before the summer movie season officially gets under way. The Fate of the Furious is expected to follow that pattern, repeating atop the box office with $49.2 million, easily beating out five new films arriving in nationwide release.

Box Office Mojo reports that, of the five new releases, most will debut in less than half the theaters that Fast & Furious 8 debuted in last weekend (4,310). Warner Bros.' Unforgettable will have the widest release of the bunch with roughly 2,350 theaters,...

Experience a Mind-Bending Night Shift in New Trailer for Buster’S Mal Heart
Blurred by fatigue, the line between reality and fantasy bends and maybe even breaks for a hotel concierge in the new trailer for Buster's Mal Heart, starring Rami Malek and DJ Qualls.

Well Go USA Entertainment will release Buster's Mal Heart in theaters on April 28th. Written and directed by Sarah Adina Smith, the film stars Rami Malek (Mr. Robot), Kate Lyn Sheil, DJ Qualls, Toby Huss, Lin Shaye, Mark Kelly, and Teresa Yenque.

Synopsis: "In this bold thriller peppered with dark humor and interlocking mystery, an eccentric mountain man is on the run from the authorities, surviving the winter by breaking into empty vacation homes in a remote community. Regularly calling into radio talk shows — where he has acquired the nickname "Buster" — to rant about the impending Inversion at the turn of the millennium, he is haunted by visions of being lost at sea, and memories of his former life as a family man.

One More Full-Length Trailer for 'Buster's Mal Heart' with Rami Malek
"It won't be long now. The inversion is coming." One more trailer to feature for this film, which is fine with us because the more attention we can bring to it, the better. Directed by Sarah Adina Smith, Buster's Mal Heart stars the very talented Rami Malek as a "troubled man on the run from fate" who suffers from a recurring dream. In the dream he's haunted by being lost at sea only to discover that the dream is real: He is one man in two bodies. The cast includes DJ Squalls, Kate Lyn Sheil, Lin Shaye, Toby Huss, Mark Kelly and Teresa Yenque. There have been two other trailers we've featured for this previously, but I'm still incredibly interested in it, and I plan on catching the film once it arrives in theaters. Take a look below. Here's the full-length trailer (+ poster) for Sarah Adina Smith's Buster's Mal Heart,...

New Trailer for Indie Drama 'Buster's Mal Heart' Starring Rami Malek
"Your version is coming." A new trailer has debuted for a film titled Buster's Mal Heart, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last year (we featured a festival teaser for this last year). Directed by Sarah Adina Smith, the film stars Rami Malek as a "troubled man on the run from fate" who suffers from a recurring dream. In the dream he's haunted by being lost at sea only to discover that the dream is real: He is one man in two bodies. The cast includes DJ Squalls, Kate Lyn Sheil, Lin Shaye, Toby Huss, Mark Kelly and Teresa Yenque. This sounds very intriguing, and it looks like it might be good, I'm definitely curious. I love the music in this trailer - odd but it works. Plus it's always nice to see Malek in more films. Check it out. Here's the newest trailer (+ poster) for Sarah Adina Smith's Buster's Mal Heart,...

A Tease of Strange Things to Come in Buster's Mal Heart [Trailer]
If there was an award for confusing a potential audience, the trailer for Buster's Mal Heart would win all the prizes. But then, reading a couple of different synopsis of the movie, I'm not sure any trailer could do this movie justice.

Rami Malek ("Mr. Robot") stars as the lead in a movie which, the trailer suggests, takes place both before and after an event called "the inversion." Before the event, Buster is living it up with his wife and daughter and working the night shift at a hotel but after the inversion, he's some sort of mountain man who breaks into vacation homes. Along with Malek, the movie also stars DJ Qualls and Kate Lyn Sheil.

Or at least I think that's what's going on. I've watched the trailer three times and I still don't really know what's going on.

Toronto 2016 Review: Buster's Mal Heart is Wonderfully Weird and Weirdly Wonderful
Rami Malek is having a moment. As the star of one of the most popular shows on television (Mr. Robot), Malek is likely getting big movie offers on a regular basis. So the choice to star as a bearded weirdo shitting in pots on kitchen counters might seem like an odd decision. Odd is indeed a good word to describe Sarah Adina Smith's latest feature Buster's Mal Heart. So are fantastic, thought-provoking, off-beat, and hilarious. This is a bizarre film – but one that weasels right into your heart and builds itself a ramshackle little weasel nest. While Malek's bearded character (aka Buster) is indeed seen early on taking part in the aforementioned kitchen counter business, it's not entirely clear who or when Buster really...

Festival Teaser Trailer for 'Buster's Mal Heart' Starring Rami Malek
"I've got the sinking sensation again..." With the Toronto Film Festival now underway, a teaser trailer has debuted for Buster's Mal Heart, one of the many indie films showing there over the next week and a half. Directed by Sarah Adina Smith, and starring Rami Malek as a "troubled man on the run from fate", this short teaser doesn't reveal much but it definitely is a very intriguing first look. The cast includes DJ Qualls, Kate Lyn Sheil, Lin Shaye, Toby Huss, Mark Kelly and Teresa Yenque. Malek (who is breaking out thanks to "Mr. Robot" though we love him in The Master, Ain't Them Bodies Saints and Short Term 12) looks great with a full beard and long hair in this, and I'm curious to see how it works into the story. Enjoy. Here's the festival teaser trailer for Sarah Adina Smith's Buster's Mal Heart, from YouTube (via...
